Jacky Cheung’s mainland China concert tour commemorates half a century

Jacky Cheung will kick off his concert at the end of the year with a 50 city tour in mainland China. Jacky named the concert "Jacky Cheung Half Century Concert" to commemorate having lived half a century. Yesterday, Jacky and his manager Florence Chan held a press conference in Beijing to officially announce that the Beijing leg of the tour will commence on January 21st through 23rd at the Wukesong Arena. [TN: Jacky’s World Tour concert will officially start on New Year’s Eve (12/31/10) in Shanghai].

Jacky indicated that next year, he will turn 50 years old and since 50 years is half a century, he decided to name his concert using this to commemorate his 50th birthday as well as the many years of beautiful memories he’s had in the music industry. Jacky expressed: “I will be 50 next year! When I was young, I looked down upon 50 year olds and felt that age was far away from me – now I regret using that type of attitude to view 50 year olds. I hope that today’s younger generation won’t look down upon people who are 50 – 60 years old.”

For his upcoming concert, Jacky expressed that he will be travelling to cities that he has never been to before – such as the city Ordos located in Inner Mongolia. Smiling, he states: “I’ve only heard of the city’s name while on an airplane, I’m not even sure which province it’s in! My geography is not very good, but I will make the effort to study about it to increase my knowledge of our mother country.” Jacky also indicated that he wants to hold a concert in his homeland of Tianjin so that he can see what types of changes the city has gone through these past couple years. Asked if he would ‘return the favor’ and ask Jay Chou to be a musical guest at his concert, Jacky said that he has not thought about a guest list yet.

Jay Chou admits to ‘almost’ stealing Jacky Cheung’s album

Taiwan artist Jay Chou launched his concert "Jay Chou 2010 Cross-Era Concert" at the Hong Kong Coliseum day before yesterday – the climax of the concert occurred when special guest performer Jacky Cheung appeared, drawing wild cheers from the audience. Jay took the opportunity to tell Jacky some words from his heart: apparently, back in the day, after Jay listened to Jacky’s famous hit song "Goodbye Kiss", he began to admire and worship him – at one point, he had even thought about stealing Jacky’s "Goodbye Kiss" album from the record store. He also indicated that he was able to meet a lot of girls by listening to Jacky’s songs.

Jay indicated that the day of the concert was his mother’s birthday, so he asked the audience to wish his mother a Happy Birthday – then he immediately launched into the song "Listen to Mom’s Words". Then, after Jay sang one line from Jacky’s "Goodbye Kiss" as a means of introduction, the God of Songs himself appeared on the stage, eliciting screams from the audience. Jay laughed and stated: “Everyone is speechless, huh? Has everyone gone crazy with surprise yet?” Jay told Jacky that all these years, he’s had some words from the heart that he has always wanted to tell his idol face to face – that he fell in love with singing after listening to Jacky’s songs. He indicated that during his school days, all the girls loved listening to Jacky’s songs, therefore he learned to sing the songs so he could woo them. After hearing this, Jacky smiled and said: “A lot of artists have told me already that they grew up listening to my songs, so tonight you don’t have to say much about it.” [TN: haha -- typical Jacky humor: Jacky is indirectly telling Jay to stop reminding him of his age – lol]

Jacky said as long as the driver is OK, it doesn't matter that the covers were ruined. He is hoping his fans will be patient and wait for the CD. It will take the company another three weeks to make the crystal CD cover. The fans can collect their order in three weeks time. The estimated loss of the accident is a 5 figure sum.

Local Hong Kong artists got together for the Qinghai Earthquake Fund Raising Campaign. In the short period, over 300 artists were able to gather together and participate in a charity performance. "Music God" Jacky Cheung revealed his righteousness at the interview, he urged everyone not to look at how much is donated and compare how much each artist donated.

Jacky Cheung, Eason Chan and other great voices sing HK's Expo theme song

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo), Hong Kong Ambassador, Jacky Cheung, has led a group of well-known singing talents to record the Cantonese version of a new song that will become the musical theme of Hong Kong's participation in Shanghai Expo. Jacky Cheung, Eric Suen, Kay Tse, Hins Cheung, Keeva Mak and band Mr. have already recorded the song. A short promotional video will be broadcast on local TV channels from this week. RTHK was responsible for overall co-ordination of the production of the theme song including the short promotional videos. The song echoes the theme of the Hong Kong Pavilion at Shanghai Expo and pays tribute to the core values and attributes of Hong Kong as Asia's world city. Jacky Cheung said he was delighted to play a part in promoting Hong Kong's participation in Shanghai Expo, and was looking forward to visiting the Hong Kong Pavilion and Hong Kong's Urban Best Practices Area Exhibition during the six-month Expo period.

After 25 years in the industry, God of Song Jacky Cheung talks about his ups and downs

Recently, Jacky has been preparing for his world tour concert at the end of the year. Coincidentally, this year is also Jacky’s 25th anniversary in the music industry. Jacky’s music career was at its peak back in the mid-1990s, however in the past 10 years, with the many changes in the music industry, Jacky honestly feels that his ‘best years’ have already passed. Beginning in the year 2000, Jacky started to change direction – he started to become more involved with stage musicals as well as movies, which allowed him to ‘perform’ in a completely different realm and expand his experiences.

Jacky Cheung -- one of Hong Kong’s 4 Kings of Canto-pop and dubbed “God of Songs’ – has been in the industry 25 years! <<Goodbye Kiss>>, <<Love Web>>, <<With You All My Life>>, <<Blessings>> -- each one of Jacky’s songs is known and universally appreciated, however do you know how many albums Jacky has released? The answer: 96 albums, 1,524 songs.

Jacky’s words: “I personally feel that my influence was greatest back during the time period of 1990 to 2000 because I was very active in the music industry at the time. In addition, at that time, the music industry (market) was flourishing – this is one area where I got lucky.”

Jacky’s new album makes money

With sales for Jacky Cheung’s new album "Private Corner" reaching 200,000 copies in Asia alone, a celebration gathering was held yesterday. At the gathering, Jacky also debuted his new MV for the song "Double Trouble", which he invested HKD$500,000 of his own money to make. The MV was directed by Xia Yong Kang and features mainland China model Du Juan.

Given the extremely high production costs of Jacky’s new album and the disadvantage of not having TVB as a promotional stage, the fact that the album is able to avoid loss and actually make money is amazing. To this, Jacky commented: “I still hope that the royalties issue will be resolved soon so that the MV for "Double Trouble" can air on TVB.”

Aaron Kwok and Zhang Ziyi in 'The Era of Magic' ; Jacky Cheung and Tang Wei in "Crossing Hennessy"

Aaron Kwok and Zhang Ziyi to Play Aids Couple in 'The Era of Magic'

Zhang Ziyi and Hong Kong actor Aaron Kwok will play a couple suffering from AIDS in director Gu Changwei's first-ever feature film tackling the issue, entitled "The Era of Magic."

Aaron Kwok was spotted on the set in Beijing Tuesday with a bearded and weary look, the Beijing News reports.

The film, adapted from a novel, tells a tragic love story between two AIDS-afflicted lovers. Kwok plays a primary school teacher who is sent from the city to teach in the countryside, but contracts AIDS and develops a crush on Zhang Ziyi's character, also an AIDS patient.

Director Gu Changwei insists Zhang Ziyi as the right actress for the lead, despite her recent embroilment in a slew of scandals about her personal life and alleged donation fraud.

Jacky Cheung closes fraud case with press conference

Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung and his manager Florence Chan, founder and CEO of Cheung's management company, Fun Entertainment Ltd, have addressed the press about an alleged fraud involving the star's upcoming concert tour, reported Chinese media.

At a press conference on Monday, Chan responded to recent reports that said a group of Chinese concert promoters paid a woman named Shen Shi Yi, who claimed to be the head of Fun Entertainment's Chinese branch, about 17 million yuan (S$3.4 million) in down payments to co-organise Cheung's concert tour.

In reality, Shen was not authorised to collect any money by Fun Entertainment, and her company was not related to the Hong Kong firm.

Jacky learns to use the internet from his daughter so he can promote his songs on-line

Yesterday, Jacky Cheung attended a charity cookie selling event as the ambassador for the Helping Hand organization. During the event, he indicated that recently, his focus has been on promoting his new album. As for the recent ‘shakeups’ at ATV that have even resulted in a legal battle, Jacky says that he is aware of the situation, but feels that since it is an internal matter at ATV, he does not have the right to comment on it and also that there is nothing to worry about. (Are you worried that in addition to not being able to ‘appear’ on TVB, now you won’t be able to go on ATV either?) Jacky replied: “If there are problems at ATV and I am not able to go on anymore, I can always go on i-cable or other radio stations, so I’m not worried!” Asked whether he would consider arranging his own album-promoting events instead of relying on the various TV and radio stations, Jacky was in agreement and confirmed that he will be holding a ‘mini-concert’ in the near future. With regard to artists nowadays utilizing the internet to interact with their fans, Jacky said: “My knowledge of computers is very poor, however I do believe that soon I will probably need to rely on the internet to promote my songs, so I will need to ask my daughter to help me enhance my computer and internet knowledge.”

Jacky appears on ATV and talks about each of his new songs

Earlier, Jacky Cheung took the lead in breaking TVB’s ‘monopoly’ on singers and accepted an interview with ATV. Yesterday, he took it one step further by filming a TV special for ATV entitled <<Jacky Cheung: Private Corner>> and accepting an interview with ATV host Jerry Lam Hiu Fung.

In the interview, which was conducted at a musical equipment company, Jacky not only walks the audience through the entire process of how his album was formed – from early planning stages to selection of songs to actual production – he also goes in depth and talks about the content as well as musical style of each song. In addition to incorporating behind-the-scenes footage of the album’s production and various MVs, the musical special will also interview the creative musical crew involved with the production of the album in efforts to familiarize the audience with the unique qualities and techniques of the album from a professional perspective. The program is scheduled to air on ATV on February 14th.

Jacky Cheung is willing to participate in one combined music award ceremony

Jacky Cheung has been the first artist to break TVB’s “monopoly” on exclusivity with HK’s singers. Not only did he accept an interview with ATV last month, he will also be making a musical special for ATV this week that will air on Chinese New Year / Valentine’s Day. At the same time, Jacky continues to reprimand TVB for not having any respect for music in Hong Kong, which contributes to the general public’s lack of respect for copyrights in music.

Jacky has indicated that he agrees with having 1 combined music award ceremony (as opposed to the 4 that HK currently has). Though Jacky has expressed long ago that he will no longer compete for awards in the music industry or “participate” in music awards ceremonies, he said that if the one ceremony concept does take place, he is definitely interested in participating to show his support.

Yesterday, Jacky accepted an interview with Metro Radio station. He admitted that this week, he will be filming an interview-style musical special for ATV. In terms of RTHK (government radio station) suggesting that next year’s music awards shows be combined into one, Jacky highly agreed: “The fact that RTHK is willing to consider this is a good thing. There are a lot of organizations out there that are unwilling to talk about it, mention it, or even think about it – so RTHK is very brave and respectable for suggesting it.” Actually, more than 10 years ago, Jacky had already made the suggestion of combining the music awards ceremonies into one, but at that time, it did not materialize. Jacky feels that back then, the timing wasn’t right, but now, the situation with the music industry has changed drastically – albums no longer earn money, so perhaps various organizations would be more willing now to combine one award ceremony, since there would be less conflict of interest in terms of money. Even if it ends up taking several years (for this to happen), it would still be worth it.

Jacky Cheung Breaks the Barriers and Appears on ATV

Due to the royalty dispute between TVB and the big 4 record companies, both sides have participated in “boycott” activities, with the big 4 companies now allowing their artists to accept interviews with ATV and i-Cable in Cantonese.

Yesterday, God of Song Jacky Cheung held a press conference for his new Cantonese album << Private Corner>>; not only did ATV send a whole production crew and reporters from their regular news department to attend the press conference, they also arranged for Jacky’s interview with them to air during the regular nightly news hour – demonstrating how important the interview is for ATV. As a result, Jacky became the first artist from the Big 4 record companies to “appear” on ATV since the royalty dispute erupted – it also marked the second time in 19 years that Jacky has appeared on ATV. For today’s artists to be able to appear on other TV stations and not just be limited to TVB, Jacky expressed that this is definitely a healthy sign.

As an artist under the Universal recording label, Jacky once expressed that TVB was being too unreasonably restrictive, indicating that TVB does not provide a lot of support to its contracted singers, yet are quick to “freeze” (suspend) them on any little thing. In addition to over 100 reporters from various media outlets in Hong Kong and Asia attending yesterday’s press conference for Jacky’s new album << Private Corner>> being released today, top management from ATV (Yip Jia Bao) and i-Cable (Wu Rong Xing) were also invited to attend. TVB management Virginia Lok was also in attendance, however the station did not send any reporters or crew to the event.

In post-production, the album was first sent to the U.S. for sound-mixing, then sent to Germany for disc printing, so that his fans – who have waited a long time for this album – can enjoy the highest quality recording.

Jacky Cheung bursts at TVB, award ceremonies are unfair

Jacky Cheung had not release a Cantonese album in 5 years, his latest one will finally release next month. However because of the HKRIA ("Big 4") having copyright disputes with TVB, Jacky will lose another source of promotion. Jacky said that his company has told him TVB is standing firm on this issue, the situation is up to the level where "discussed until there is nothing to discuss anymore".

Break TVB's Monopoly
Yesterday Jacky attended RTHK's new program <A World Without Walls 沒有牆的世界>, speaking of the Big 4 and TVB copyright issues, Jacky expressed that there is no choice, he cannot control anything, only able to do well on his own part. Jacky said that his company has told him about the issue with TVB and that he knows his company had meetings with both i-Cable and ATV. He believes that his company can find a way out of this issue, but for the mean time he has not been notified of anything new. Although Jacky had not attended the award ceremonies for several years, but does he feel that its unfair to those singers who should get awards? He said that television stations do not focus too much on music, at most would be broadcasting MVs here and there, if those MV could be aired on different stations, then it is a benefit to the singers.

Jacky said that he is part of the older generation, where <JSG> had more resources, but now they have less, at most singers are allowed to sing for 3 minutes, he only experienced singing for a minute before having to leave the stage. He said: "I don't know what the world has come to, how big of an impact it is I do not dare to say. How much support does television stations really give the music world? How much are they going to demand in the end? Rights and obligations should be deducted, that is what's relative. Even if there wasn't this incident, in the future something still will happen." Jacky said that award ceremonies is not about fair or unfair, it is about mutual beneficial collaboration, singers need television stations to help them promote, but the TV Station only has little resources to work with, but ask for so much back, this is unfair.

Don't always talk about blocking off
When asked if it was his generation that award ceremonies started becoming unfair? Jacky said: "award ceremonies are not fair, I already said it so many times! Once it is game over, on the basis singers who signed a contract should get support, don't always talk about blocking off. First, the speech needs to change." As for the record companies finding other ways out, is it breaking TVB's monopoly? Jacky said that it is not definite, but it is a good start. He smiled: "There is already nothing else to discuss about, this is pretty funny, what to do?! It is only one station broadcasting? There are many more people out there that listens to music." He felt that music should get more support and not get blocked off.

Regarding Eric Tsang not liking TVB's actions and exposed that the guest stars in their new film <72 Tenant Prosperity> not receiving any pay for their participation. Asked the lead actor if his salary was reduced too? He said that he received the full amount, no less no more. As for TVB artistes not getting anything? Jacky said: "I don't have a contract with TVB, so I don't get any money from them. I heard Eric say that each participating guest will get paid, but if it is fair, I don't know. That you will have to ask TVB artistes to know."
