Notion Ink Tegra Android smartpad uses Pixel Qi display

CES 2010 is likely to see a fair few internet tablets being announced, but SlashGear has heard about one particular model that has more than a little promise. Notion Ink’s as-yet unnamed Android “smartpad” is based on an unnanounced NVIDIA Tegra T20 chipset supporting 1080p Full HD video playback, has integrated WiFi, Bluetooth and UMTS/HSDPA, and – perhaps most interestingly – is the first confirmed device to use the Pixel Qi transflective display. Notion Ink are saving the live hardware shots for CES – hence the renders – but they did send us some photos of the 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 Pixel Qi panel in action, which you can see after the cut along with the full specifications.

The Notion Ink smartpad measures 6.3 x 9.8 x 0.6 inches and weighs 1.7lbs; as well as the triband (850/1900/2100) UMTS/HSDPA, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR it also squeezes in A-GPS, a digital compass, accelerometer and proximity, ambient light and water sensors. Connectivity includes USB, HDMI, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microphone input, and there’s also a 3-megapixel autofocus camera with video recording support. Onboard storage is either 16GB or 32GB of SSD, and there’s an SD slot for augmenting that.

Initially – at least as it’s to be shown at CES – the smartpad will use the regular Android UI, with full gesture support. Navigation is either via the touchscreen or a trackpad, and Notion Ink have added a matte-finish anti-glare, oleophobic and scratch-resistant coating to the Pixel Qi display. Of course, the panel itself can be viewed indoors as a regular LCD, or outdoors in either transflective mode with reduced color vibrancy or fully reflective 64-level grayscale mode. Notion Ink say they’ve been developing a number of applications that should be added sometime after CES, including Office-style software, Flash-based titles and some graphics apps that include physics-based functionality. Ebook reading is also another possibility, and the company are in talks with several (unnamed) content providers.

Perhaps most importantly for a web-browsing tablet, battery life estimates are impressive. Notion Ink reckon the smartpad will be good for up to 48hrs standby on its integrated rechargeable Li-Ion battery, 8hrs of HD video playback and 16hrs of internet surfing over WiFi. It seems it’s the eight-core Tegra T20 chipset that’s primarily responsible for such longevity, though Notion Ink can’t share any more details on that SoC itself. Meanwhile media playback isn’t sacrificed, and Notion Ink have apparently played three 1080p HD videos simultaneously with only a small loss in frames. The company is still working on optimizing the hardware, so we might see even greater runtimes and performance by the time the smartpad launches.

The big issue remaining is price, and so far we’re not sure exactly what sort of MRSP Notion Ink expect their Android Tegra tablet to command. The general consensus seems to be that a $300 price point is roughly what the market expects; however we’re not sure everything on the smartpad’s spec-sheet could be brought in for that price, at least not without carrier subsidies. We’ll update with more information when we have it, together with video.

Robert Pattinson Smooched By Swine Flu Sufferer

Twilight star Robert Pattinson blew a gasket on a female fan after the teen jumped out of a stalled vehicle and planted a wet one right on Pattz smacks after telling him she was getting over swine flu.

A National Enquirer snitch claims The Twilight Saga: New Moon hunk lashed out the beauty, who planted a smooch on his lips: “My mom wouldn’t pull the car over to let me out because I’m just getting over the swine flu… so I jumped out at the red light just to see you.”

Rob went bonkers, shoving the girl away and bellowing: “You have the SWINE FLU?!… What the hell are you doing kissing anyone?” Rob then told his bodyguards, “You guys have got to keep these crazies away from me!”

The actor reportedly made a beeline for the nearest drugstore, where he loaded up on Listerine — which he hopes will help kill any potential H1N1 germs.

“Avatar” $100 Million Opening Weekend Expected

Christmas has come early for legendary lensman James Cameron – his first big-budget blockbuster since 1997’s Titanic is on course to be another massive hit. Film industry analysts expect Avatar, which opens Friday, to be one of the year’s biggest debuts, pulling in almost $100 million when it opens in 3,453 theaters in North America over the weekend.

“For a lot of older people, it’s going to be the first film that they see in 3D,” said Jeff Bock, box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations Co. “Don’t be surprised if it hits that billion dollar mark (worldwide during its entire run) if it really takes off and becomes the event film of the season,” he said

Cameron broke box office records back in 1997 when his film Titanic became the most successful movie of all time. He developed his own camera from the film’s production and will be a breakthrough in terms of filmmaking technology.

The $100 million opening would put the the computer-animated, sci-fi film halfway towards making up its $200 million budget.

Avatar — which stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana — received four Golden Globe Award nominations including best drama film as nominations were announced in Beverly Hills on Monday.

Xiao Gui Looks Down on Rainie/Show's Relationship. The Forced Kiss Didn't Have Real Emotion

Show Luo Zhi Xiang (Xiao Zhu) and Rainie Yang Cheng Lin rumored to be in love, good friend Alien Huang looks down on ZhuCheng relationship, directly states that if the two dated, they would absolutely break up even if it wasn't being destroyed by outsiders because Rainie is too tricky and smart, and she's not the gentle type of girl that Show loves.

Album Release Conference became a conference to clarify Show and Rainie's rumored acting turned real relationship from <Hi My Sweetheart>, Rainie once visited Show during a late night and they went out on a date, the topic of ZhuCheng Love is a hot rumor, Alien is stuck between ex-high school girlfriend and best friend. Alien's Album Release Conference on the 17th turned into a ZhuCheng Love clarification conference, he doesn't mind the two dating, but will not agree to the love rumors.

He analyzed that Rainie and Show's kiss scenes had no "pheromones", doesn't seem like they put real emotions into it; so if ZhuCheng Love was real then <Hi My Sweetheart> was filmed too fake, it doesn't meet the requirements to be nominated for the Golden Bell Awards. Alien and Show once elaborated that if they fell in love with the same girl, they would still put their brotherly love in first place.

Knowing each other for 10 years, Alien and Rainie, whose about to release her new album, are as close as family, Rainie has turned into a French Doll, not being able to make it to the actual conference, she gave her blessings to him over VCR (pre-recorded video) saying: "I want to be the woman standing behind a successful Xiao Gui", this surprised everyone but afterwards she said that she's known Alien for 10 years, they've gone through many years of experience together, their relationship has long been like family, that's why she uses the term "woman standing behind him" to describe herself. The day that Alien gets a new girlfriend, then she will give that new person the spot that she has. Towards Rainie's support, Alien says that he's really happy.

Once when filming "Entertainment 100%" Rainie suspected that Alien had done botox, Alien tried to clarify the matter but Rainie wouldn't believe it, thinking that he was too girly, because of this the two of them were angry at each other, Rainie then said that when she saw how skinny Alien was she was shocked, that's why she suspected him, men should be more natural.

Christmas and New Years is coming closer, Rainie said that she's too busy and has no time to date, she's really anticipating receiving blessings from the one she fancies, she wouldn't say who the opposing party was and ambiguously stated that they were still only in the friendship stage, this lead to people guess that it was Show.

Song Yoon Ah is pregnant

Having gotten married earlier, celebrity couple Seol Kyeong Gu and Song Yoon Ah will soon become parents.

The low-profile couple had no intentions of revealing about this, and even Song Yoon Ah herself kept quiet when asked, when she attended a press conference for her movie, Wedding Dress on 8th December.

But rumors were rife recently that Song Yoon Ah had been pregnant for 3 months although it was revealed as being false. Song Yoon Ah's representative revealed, "Rumors of Song Yoon Ah being pregnant for 3 months are not true. But we are pleased to announce that Song Yoon Ah is currently 5 weeks pregnant."

Congratulations to them!

Google Nexus One T-Mobile 3G confirmed; EDGE only on AT&T ; lacks multitouch

The Google Nexus One hands-on reports continue to trickle in, and after Peek CEO Amol Sarva’s reasonably glowing feedback earlier in the week, now it’s tnkgrl who has spent some time playing with the Android 2.1 smartphone. No photos – they weren’t allowed – but plenty of interesting news, including confirmation that the Nexus One only supports T-Mobile USA 3G; you’ll be limited to EDGE on AT&T. Contrasting with earlier speculation that Google might be looking to bypass carrier-voice altogether and instead use VoIP over data, tnkgrl found that voice calls are routed in the regular way.

Elsewhere there’s both a microUSB port and a number of gold connections on the bottom of the handset, which are presumably for docking with Google Nexus One accessories like a car kit.

The unit tnkgrl played with had a 4GB microSD card preinstalled – it’s unclear if that’ll be standard or not – together with a 1,400mAh battery and an 854 x 480 touchscreen which “appears to be OLED”.

The whole thing is described as “super snappy” and faster, in her opinion, than the DROID, as well as extremely thin and “nicer looking in person than in pictures”. Multitouch fans will be disappointed to hear that there’s no support for multi-finger gestures in either the browser or Google Maps, though.'

Google's Nexus One lacks multitouch

Our buddy Tnkgrl just had a sit down with Google and HTC's lovedroid, the Nexus One. She "wasn't allowed" to take pictures or video but she came away with plenty of detail. The biggest point of clarification might not be what's included in the handset, but what's missing: multitouch. She confirms, "no multitouch support in the browser or in Google Maps," just like Verizon's Droid (but available on its European Milestone brother). The unit she tested included a 4GB microSD card, 1400mAh battery, worked on T-Mobile's 3G only (AT&T is limited to EDGE data), and was "super snappy! Faster than the Droid." She also noted "gold contacts" along the bottom edge presumably for a docking port thus jibing with whispers of a Nexus One Car Dock accessory. Now hit the read link for all the details if you still have the strength.

P.S. We should probably clarify that while the Google Apps tested don't respond to multitouch, the OS and hardware are presumably multitouch capable. See our previous exhaustive analysis of this topic if you're wondering why.

Mozilla: Firefox Mobile could be demise of Apple’s App Store, Huh?

We’re not sure if the good people at Mozilla have been drinking the same Kool-Aid® as the folks developing Chrome OS or if they are just out of their blessed minds. Mozilla is touting that its mobile version of Firefox, currently codenamed Fennec, could be the beginning of the end for mobile app stores like Apple’s App Store and Android’s Market. Mozilla VP of mobile Jay Sullivan told PC Pro, “Anyone who knows JavaScript and HTML can develop a great app without having to learn a specific mobile platform.” Now, our memories aren’t that great, but didn’t Apple already try this when the iPhone first came out? Isn’t this what Palm’s entire SDK is made of? Didn’t one Steve Jobs upon launching the first iPhone proclaim, that we don’t need native applications, web apps will do everything we want? So as it turns out, he did, and they didn’t. Sullivan continues, “in the interim period, apps will be very successful. Over time, the web will win because it always does.” Are they visionaries or is it a pipe dream from a company whose bread and butter revolves around the browser? We will see.

Google In Discussions To Acquire Yelp For A Half Billion Dollars Or More

Google and Yelp are in advanced acquisition negotiations, we’ve confirmed from multiple sources. And while the deal isn’t done, we’ve heard that it’s very likely to close. The price is supposedly at least $500 million.

Yelp was founded in 2004 as a way to let users leave reviews on local businesses. Comscore puts worldwide traffic at nearly 9 million monthly unique visitors, and it has been growing fast – the company says it’s real numbers are more like 25 million monthly uniques.

Yelp has whispered that 2009 revenues will be around $30 million and are expecting $50 million or so in 2010.

Yelp last raised venture capital in early 2008 from DAG at a $200 million pre-money valuation, we’ve heard. They’ve raised a total of $31 million over four venture rounds.

On the odds of the deal happening – one source says its 80% likely. Not signed, sealed and delivered, but past the term sheet stage.

Google is building out their own directory of local businesses with its Place Pages, which can be accessed via Google Maps and local search. They are encouraging local businesses to put Google-branded stickers in store windows and recently added their own ratings summaries to business profiles. Yelp, of course, already has all of this data, along with a growing and active audience of consumers who are used to finding (and rating) businesses on Yelp.

For their part, Google is clearly on a shopping spree. They recently acquired AdMob for $750 million, and were in the running on the LaLa acquisition. Expect lots of deals to be announced by them over the next three months.

Robsten Sneak Beach Date Before Public Partying!

Undercover lovers Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were spotted out together in Venice Beach yesterday, escaping the shutterbugs and enjoying a private date night. Take that, all you Robsten haters!

While everyone seems so hell-bent on having Rob hook up with the likes of Katy Perry (just because they're photographed at an event, please), a source spills to us that Robsten was dining at Gjelina restaurant on Abbot Kinney before scoping out the fab A. Kinney Court opening next door.

Says our insider who attended the party:

"Robert and Kristen were eating next door and peaked in the window after their dinner as the party was wrapping up."

We all know that Robsten likes to keep a low profile, so showing up to an event opening together where Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Olivia Wilde also were in attendance totally isn't their scene.

But the concept fashion boutique and eyewear store totally suits Kristen's chiller style, so we know why they would take a pause to check it out. Atta girl, you tell your man to make some time for window shopping!

"Kristen was wearing an old white T-shirt with her hair in a ponytail," our eyes tell us. "Rob was wearing jeans, a tee and a dark coat.

"It looked like they were on a nice stroll through the neighborhood. They seemed really just into hanging together."

So did R & K opt for some PDA since not too many people were looking?

"They weren't holding hands, but were really sweet with each other."

We all know that R.Pattz's night didn't end there. He went out to celebrate his friend Shannon Woodward's birthday at Dimples karaoke bar alongside Katy Perry.

Rob showed up around 11:15, plenty of time to drop K.Stew off where she needed to be. The A. Kinney opening ended around 10. Sweet that R.Pattz wanted to spare his truer emotions from the waiting paps he knew would be documenting his every move later on.

A spokesperson for Gjelina declined to comment about Robsten's romantic meal saying, "We wouldn't be able to tell you about that."

A rep for Kristen also kept mum saying, "We don't have a comment, but thank you."

We're just glad the couple got in some quality relaysh time! Love it, or love it?

It's utterly and truly Robsten-style amour at work, every angle you look at it, as we trust you will.

It's A Very Gaga Christmas! Enjoy Lady Gaga's Hits As Christmas Songs

Lady Gaga is way too busy to make a holiday record. She's already got her scandalous Christmas song, "Christmas Tree." She's got a smash album (The Fame: Monster) on the charts, she released a groundbreaking video ("Bad Romance"), she participated in a musical art installation and, to top it all off, she performed for the friggin' Queen. So, no, she does not have time to belt out "Silent Night" (though that would be awesome).

Luckily, the folks at Landline TV have filled the void, albeit in a parody/satire fashion. The New York comedy troupe's latest video is a pretty funny rendering of what a Lady Gaga Christmas album would look and sound like. You get non-existent classics like "Bad Snowmans," "Love Sleigh" and "Snow Pants." Well done, guys. Check out the video (with some extra Taylor-Swift-parody added) below.
