Howard Stern Is the Only Choice To Replace Simon Cowell?

It has been a week dominated by the buzz of Howard Stern potentially making the jump from satellite radio to Fox to replace Simon Cowell on 'American Idol.' Entertainment newscasts proclaim just how much money Stern could be offered ($100 million! More!), speculation of Stern coming to 'A.I.' cast a bizarre shadow over Ellen DeGeneres' debut on the show and Stern himself has spent hours upon hours on his Sirius/XM show laughing about the opportunity and having seven months off a year to count his 'A.I.' money.

The topic has divided our readers. We asked you on Wednesday whether you approved of the potential move. 80,000 people voted and 68 percent said "thumbs down" to Stern in place of Cowell. Our Facebook fans battled back and forth: Some would never watch the show again! Some would start watching only if Stern joined. Our own Girls on Pop editors questioned the move, saying that Stern does not bring enough musical experience to the show (they also state Ellen doesn't have any either). Many of our readers in their comments have stated that Stern would bring nothing but a potty mouth and stripper skits to a popular and family-friendly franchise.

As a devoted listener of Stern's for 16 years, it's time to speak up. The hiring of Stern to replace Cowell is a game-changing, series-saving move and there is no one on the planet more qualified to take Simon's seat.

Tina Fey Goes Rogue in Vogue; Talks of Palin Backlash

It's Tina Fey's world and we only live in it. In a previous PopEater article, we compared the post-'Saturday Night Live' trajectories of previous stars of the show, and Fey was, for anyone who doesn't live in a cave, super-hot. She came off a career-best year in 2008: The game-changing Sarah Palin impressions on 'SNL' and writing and acting on her creation, the Emmy Award-winning '30 Rock.'

However, as anyone who follows the pop cultural firmament knows, there is one abiding rule: What goes up must come down. But Fey has defied that fundamental law of entertainment physics. '30 Rock' is still a TV juggernaut. 'Date Night' with Steve Carell is coming out in April. And perhaps most tellingly, she has the endorsement of 'Vogue' editor Anna Wintour, not known for giving out praise lightly. In the March edition of the magazine, Wintour glows about Fey in her editor's letter: "There is nothing ordinary about her brilliance, her perceptiveness, or her beauty."

Samsung Wave Bada phone spotted already

If you want to keep your upcoming cellphone quiet until its triumphant MWC 2010 debut, it’s probably a bad idea to put up a huge banner showing it in all its glory. Unfortunately Samsung didn’t appear to get that memo, and so we have the first official shots of the Samsung Wave, running their new Bada platform.

the:unwired’s Arne Hess is already on the ground at MWC and the above photo showed up in his photo stream. Of course beyond the name and what we can glean from the images there’s no telling what the Wave’s full specifications might be; it’s obviously a full touchscreen device with a camera (and what looks like an LED flash) on the back, but we’ll have to wait until Samsung’s press conference to find out exact functionality.

Nokia Feel Symbian app suggests activities based on what you feel

Ready for a new experimental app from Nokia Beta Labs? Meet Nokia Feel, an application that lets you tell your phone how you feel, and then suggests things that you could do.

The app includes a list of feelings that you can choose: Happy, Lucky, Lonely, Hungry, Energetic, Bored, Creative, Caring and so on. After you tell the application how you feel, it will suggest specific activities for each feeling.

For example, if you’re feeling creative, the app can suggest things like: write a story, “draw a nice picture”, or contribute to Wikipedia.

It’s not clear yet if Nokia Feel is compatible with all Symbian phones (probably not), but it should work with all the touch-enabled ones.

Here's What Final Fantasy For iPhone Will Look Like

I'm more excited about Final Fantasy 1 + 2 coming to the iPhone than just about any upcoming iPhone game. It's Final Fantasy! For iPhone!

This is what it looks like in motion. You still have to use the traditional iPhone control scheme of putting your left thumb over 1/6 of the screen, and your right thumb over another 1/6. But still, it's not like this is an action game where you need to see everything on the screen at once. And that's why it'll theoretically transition well to the iPhone, letting you pick up the action whenever you've got a free second, but being able to save/pause when it's your turn at the post office.

Opera Mini reaches 50 million monthly unique users

Today, Opera Software announced that the Opera Mini mobile browser passed the 50 million unique monthly users mark last month (January).

This represents a 150% increase compared to January last year, when about 20 million users used Opera Mini to browser the Web on their phones and smartphones.

Opera says that, according to Gartner, “mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access device worldwide” by 2013 – which means that the adoption of Opera Mini will grow even more.

App Store Now Has 150,000 Apps. Great News For The iPad: Paid Books Rule.

During Apple’s iPad event in January, CEO Steve Jobs announced that Apple now had over 140,000 apps in the App Store (along with over 3 billion downloads). If the numbers by app analytics company Distimo are correct, that number is now past 150,000.

But the App Store is growing so big, so quickly that these milestones alone are hardly noteworthy anymore. But Distimo also offers up some nice data along with the milestone number. For example, of the 150,000 apps, some 75% are paid applications while only 25% are free. This is in stark contrast to the second largest app store, Android Market, where recent data suggests that over 60% of the app there are free.
