American Idol Lowers Its Age Limit

Has Bieber-fever invaded American Idol?

On the heels of Justin Bieber‘s massive success, the talent show announced it will lower its eligibility age to 15 for season 10, reports USA Today.

“A lot of young, talented people are now seeking careers and representation before they turn 16,” Idol executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz says. “Lowering the age limit allows us to tap into this talent pool.”

The show’s age limit was previously 16 to 28.

FOX also recently announced Idol will begin accepting online auditions via MySpace. Does that mean the show is looking for the next Greyson Chance, the 12-year-old whose video version of Lady Gaga‘s “Paparazzi” went viral?

Auditions for the next season of American Idol begin July 17 in Nashville.

Xbox Live family subscription plan available starting in November for $99

Microsoft's just dropped details on its new Xbox Live family subscription plan. Starting in November, it will offer the Gold Family Pack, enabling up to four users to have Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, for $99.99 a year. It'll also debut the Family Center, a new menu accessible from the dashboard for customizing account settings. We've certainly wished for something like this in the past, and the pricing sounds like a pretty good deal to us -- we'll be able to afford a new cap for our avatar, afterall!

A Million Users Strong, Google Voice Opens To All

When Google launches new services, they often gets a lot of hype (see: Wave, Buzz). Unfortunately, they don’t always live up to that hype (see: Wave, Buzz). But one service that Google launched last year definitely has: Google Voice. Sadly, it has only been open to those with invites. But starting today, it is open to all.


Google Voice started as GrandCentral, a startup launched in 2006 to revolutionize phone management on the web. Google quickly snapped it up in 2007 for over $50 million. For the next two years, it went through a metamorphosis. During that time, some wondered if it was yet another service that Google bought and let die. But in 2009, it emerged as the Google Voice butterfly.

The “early preview” of Google Voice that Google unveiled last year has since undergone a number of changes. Notably, SMS now works better, a Chrome extension makes it simple to keep on top of everything, and there’s a great mobile web app. Most importantly though, Google Voice now works seamlessly with all Android-based mobile phones. The solution is brilliant — and was the central figure in Google’s falling out with Apple (after they rejected the native Google Voice app).

Verizon DROID X dropping July 2nd?

Ah, yes. The creepy nerd-centric DROID X commercial Verizon users have come to know and love. Well, maybe not love, but it is memorable. BriefMobile is reporting that if you slow down the teaser-video towards the end, it appears as though the 07.2010 actually turns into 07.2.2010. Now, this could just be some video artifact from the flickering, morphing transition on that particular clip…but conspiracy theories are way more fun. One thing is certain: Verizon is holding a media event this Wednesday in NYC, and the DROID X is most certainly going to be there. To us, a June 23rd unveiling (one day before the iPhone 4 goes live) and a July 2nd release doesn’t seem out of the question. What do you think?

Raymond Lam clarifies did not get 'jumpy' when holding Tavia Yeung's hand

Yesterday afternoon, Raymond Lam attended a Office Windows 2010 promotional event in West Kowloon. The temperature yesterday hit 34 degrees C, under the hot weather, he went on a helicopter and then held the ceremony at an open area. Raymond appeared to be sweating heavily on his back. Asked if his pay for this event is very high? Raymond did not answer directly, he only expressed that he's afraid of heights. He said: "I just looked at the scenery up in the air constantly. Usually at shopping mall events, I can't even look down the glass window on the 2nd or 3rd floor. But when shooting for costume series, I would get so into my heroic character that I'm not afraid anymore. One time when I was filming a modern series, I had to stick out half of my body of a 30+ floor building to save someone, I was really scared that time because it was modern, can't fly."

In Raymond's series (The Mysteries of Love), there was one part where he grabbed Tavia Yeung's hand and appeared 'jumpy' (TN: The Cantonese slang: "Dung L"). However yesterday at the event, flying up so high, he did not have that kind of reaction. He said: "That is absolutely not the case. Just that day during filming, the pants the crew gave me to wear was too tight, it was so tight that I couldn't buckle it together. Also, I believe it's a camera angle issue."

4minute’s HyunA defends her stage outfit choices

4minute’s HyunA has become a hot issue regarding her outfit, with photos of her taken at a recent World Cup open concert in Seoul making its’ way online.


The 4minute girls had attended a recent street cheering concert in order to show their support for Korea by performing their recent hit songs on the 17th before the Korea Republic vs Argentina game.

Some fans who attended the concert later commented about her clothing attire online, by saying that she was showing excessive amounts of skin.

T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S T959) shows up

Last week, the FCC has confirmed the Samsung Galaxy S T959 for T-Mobile, and today we even get to see the smartphone, with T-Mo branding and all, although it’s this not officially announced.


CellPhoneSignal has it that T-Mobile’s Galaxy S will be officially called Samsung Vibrant. Naturally, there’s no way to confirm this at the moment. However, since AT&T’s Galaxy S is called Captivate, it makes sense for the T-Mobile version to have a different name, too.

Unlike the Captivate, the Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile looks almost exactly like the Galaxy S i9000 that some European and Asian customers can already buy. The smartphone features a 4 inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, 1GHz processor, Android 2.1, 5MP camera, and HD video recording.

Acer Aspire Timeline X laptops arrive stateside sans ULV processors

Acer's Timeline X laptops have been popping up around the world for over three months now, but the thin and light machines are finally making their way to this side of the globe, and we can only hope they're as excited as we are. The machines all shun ULV processors for standard voltage Core i3 or i5 CPUs, yet each of the models still ring up at under a grand. They also span the entire size spectrum -- there's an 11.6-inch 1830T, 13.3-inch 3820T, 14-inch 4820T and lastly the 15.6-inch 5820T. However, despite their full-power CPUs and ATI Mobiltiy Radeon HD 5650 graphics options, all the models continue to measure less than an inch thick -- yep, even the Aspire 5820T and the Aspire 4820T with onboard optical drives maintain rather trim measurements. While there are plenty of deals to be had, the $800 Aspire 4820TG with its Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 320GB hard drive sounds mighty tempting. Yet, there's also the $600 1830T with a Core i3 processor, 3GB of memory and 320GB of storage. We told you we were excited. Google working on news, music services

Google Inc. is developing services to let consumers pay for access to news articles and songs through individual purchases and subscriptions, according to various news reports.

The system to access fee-based news articles is called Newspass and would give people a single log-in and payment account to access the "paywalls" of multiple publications, according to the reports, which were triggered by an article last week in Italy's La Repubblica newspaper.

The move is seen as an olive branch for the publishing industry from Google, which many news organizations blame for the revenue crisis their publications have faced in recent years. Google has been accused of using third-party news content to build traffic for its search engines, specifically its Google News service. Google counters that it only serves up headlines, short text blurbs and thumbnail pictures on its pages, and that it always links them to articles in the original publishers' Web sites.

Swift is looking super sleek!

On Saturday, Taylor Swift hit the beach at Atlantis in the Bahamas. The 20-year-old singer showed some skin -- but not too much -- in a high-waisted, polka dot bikini as she dipped her toes in the surf.

The tall, naturally svelte star's beach day was her way to relax before a show at the nearby Paradise Island resort. Swift has said that she keeps in shape through jogs outside or on the treadmill inside her tour bus.

"Basically, if I'm indulging too much and not exercising enough, I can feel that," she told Allure magazine last year.

"I can feel a change before I see it. For me, working out is not so I can get skinny. It's so that I can keep up my endurance so I'm not panting on stage. Heavy breathing is the worst when you’re in concert. You don’t want to see that if you’re going to see a show."
