Scarlett Johansson gets 'Under the Skin'

Today, Scarlett Johansson’s rep confirmed with EW that the actress had been cast as the star of Under the Skin, in which Johansson will play a sexy space alien who kidnaps human hitchhikers and sends them back to her home world to be served as exotic hor d’oeuvres. It sounds like a direct-to-video plot more suited for Species star Natasha Henstridge, except the director is none other than Jonathan Glazer, the hipster auteur behind 2000′s stylish British gangster movie Sexy Beast, as well as 2004′s Birth, the creepy drama that had Nicole Kidman falling in love with a 10-year-old boy. Apparently, this dark sci-fi comedy has been on the English director’s to-do list for years, but now, with a genuine starlet attached, it actually looks like it’s going to happen sometime in 2011.

Personally, I’m interested in whatever sort of weird movie Glazer decides to make, but I can’t help but wonder if, after the critical disappointment of Iron Man 2, Johansson should be avoiding skin-tight outfits and superhuman powers for a while. But what do you think, PopWatchers? Is this a good career move for Scarlett or not?

God help us: Internet Explorer 6 Lives On

Please, please, just let Internet Explorer 6 die. It was an awful browser even in its day, 2001. The only reason it became popular was that Microsoft got away with illegally beating Netscape into the ground. Unfortunately, many corporate developers created crude, IE 6-specific Web applications that we’re stuck with to this very day. And, now thanks to Browsium’s UniBrows, we may be stuck with for many more years to come.

UniBrows will let users run IE6 within IE8. Yes, that’s right; people will be able to keep running IE 6 for years to come.

Shoot me now.

I gave up on IE6 as a set of security holes pretending to be a Web browser back in 2004. Since then, lots of other people have joined me in fleeing from IE6 to other Web browsers such as Firefox, Safari, Opera, and my new favorite, Chrome.

Heck, even Microsoft wants you to stop using IE6. While I think you’d be better off with an open-source Web browser, I also think that moving to any of the later versions of Internet Explorer would be a smart move.

If you’re still on XP, and you want to stay true to Microsoft, go with Internet Explorer 8. If you’re running Windows 7, you should be looking forward to IE9.

Despite all these alternatives and IE6’s security problems, according to site analytics vendor Net Applications, the decrepit Web browser still has almost 15% of the world market. If you look at how individual browsers rank that makes its the world’s third most popular Web browser behind IE8, with 29.04% and Firefox 3.6x with 17.63%. What’s really amazing though is that Gartner research shows that an amazing 20% of businesses are still stuck on IE6-specific programs.

In other words, it’s not idiot end-users running unpatched copies of XP that’s keeping IE 6 alive, its businesses. You’d think their IT departments would know better.

Samsung Galaxy S first smartphone to be Wi-Fi Direct certified

Samsung has generally been on the cutting edge when it comes to giving its smartphones the latest and greatest in terms of compatibility, with the Omnia being the first DivX certified handset in America this month two years ago. Now, it's looking to wrangle yet another first, with this one having the potential to be far more important. The outfit's hot-selling Galaxy S smartphone (GT-I9000) is now listed on the Wi-Fi Alliance's Wi-Fi Direct certification docket, and while we knew that a handful of Wi-Fi modules and chipsets were about to get green-lit, this marks the first actual device to join that crowd. As we mentioned before, any modern-era WiFi device is capable of becoming Direct certified (via a firmware update given that there's no hardware change in the protocol), but it seems as if Sammy is being Johnny-on-the-spot. We'll keep an ear to the ground regarding an actual update that brings this functionality to life, but for now, let's all cross our fingers and hope those other phone makers get their handsets in line, too.

Android Continues To Close In On Apple, RIM

comScore has released its monthly smartphone mobile report today and like last month’s data, Android is continuing its assault on Apple and RIM’s share of users. The data, which measured smartphone usage from June until September of this year, showed that 58.7 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during period, up 15 percent from the preceding three month period ending in June. comScore says that the Android platform now reaches more than 1 in 5 U.S. smartphone subscribers.

RIM was the leading mobile smartphone platform in the U.S. with 37.3 percent share of U.S. smartphone subscribers (down 2.6 percent from the previous period), followed by Apple with 24.3 percent share (which didn’t rise or fall from the previous period). But Google continued to gain ground rising 6.5 percentage points to capture 21.4 percent of smartphone subscribers. Microsoft accounted for 10.0 percent of smartphone subscribers, while Palm rounded out the top five with 4.2 percent.

In terms of device manufacturers, Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 23.5 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, up 0.7 percentage points from the three month period ending in June. Katy Perry on Russell Brand: I Found My "Great Man of God"

What exactly is it that newlywed Katy Perry sees in her new husband, British comic Russell Brand?

Harper’s Bazaar Magazine investigates just that in a chat with the card-carrying “California Gurl” that will appear between the covers of the mag’s December issue, available Nov. 16.

We never would have taken Russ for the biblical type — given all the sex addiction and potty-minded sense of humor and all — but for Katy, Brand’s spiritual quest was a bigger turn-on than bulked-up arms and a sizable bank account.

2010 MacBook Air owners reporting logic board and display issues

Early adopters typically run into weird issues when putting their first generation gadgetry to use, and owners of the new MacBook Air models are no exception. Indeed, on the day of its release Apple had to push out a software update to stop the system from locking up while in iMovie -- but that wasn't the end of the woes. Thanks to a YouTube video, we've seen for ourselves evidence of a display flickering in a most unappealing manner, and we're hearing tales of other display issues, kernel errors that occur when the machines are trying to come out of sleep mode, and more. There's not been an official response from Apple yet, we're not sure how widespread the problems are, and we haven't experienced these issues first hand on our devices -- but we'll let you know as soon as we hear something. Promise. In the meantime, it looks like some of you might have a date with the Genius Bar. Video after the break.

Selina Jen's music label demands explanation for accident

Taiwan trio S.H.E's music label HiM International Music has issued a formal request Tuesday for Hunan Television to release results of their investigation on the filming accident which left band member Selina Jen with serious burns, reported Taiwan media.

"Ten days after the incident, we would like Hunan Television, who invited us to participate in this drama ("I Have A Date With Spring") to quickly release the results of their investigation as they have promised, by this week," said a statement from HiM.

"[This is] to clarify the cause of this accident and where the responsibility lies as well as protect the interests of the two injured artistes and compensate them."

A spokesperson for the production crew working on "I Have A Date With Spring" told reporters she had already "verbally explained" the details to HiM representatives on Sunday, but a written report on the accident can only be release "once it has been studied by Hunan Television and its partner".

While the media companies play the blame game, Jen, 29, is out of danger and recovering at the hospital.

Meanwhile, her S.H.E group mate Hebe Tien has gone on tour to promote her new solo album and Ella Chen revealed on her micro-blog account that she will be heading to the United States to study.

"I will be going to the US to become a student. Selina, please don't worry and recuperate. I will return safely," wrote Chen, who also posted a photo of herself smiling and surrounded by luggage.

Chen had apparently been rather morose after Jen's filming accident. Her lighthearted tone also suggested that all was well with Jen and that she is recovering nicely.

Life Unexpected Canceled? What About Parenthood?

Sources confirm that the CW has decided not to pick up any more episodes of sophomore drama Life Unexpected.

So does this mean it's totally over? And what's the bad news on NBC's Parenthood?

Though there's been no official cancellation announcement by the CW, sadly, I'm told by insiders that the sweet little show (loved by many fans) just didn't pull in high enough ratings to warrant the back-nine order. Suffice to say, it would take a ratings-rebound miracle in order for LUX to come back next fall.

The official decision about a third season will be handed down in May, when the CW announces its new fall schedule.

Life Unexpected boss Liz Tigelaar took to her Facebook page with this message: "It's real, it's true, no back nine. But stranger things have happened when people are invested so keep watching. We have a GREAT season to show you and who knows!!!"

Star Emma Caulfield wrote via Twitter: "Yes kids, it's true. Thank you for all your support. It meant a lot to the entire cast and crew."

And as further proof that these people legitimately like each other, the LUX cast got together to group-blog this adorable entry last night for us. We're also expecting to talk to Liz this morning, so if you have any questions or messages for her or the cast, please post in our comments section or tweet me @kristindsantos.
