Update on “4 Stations Joint Media Award”: Joey Yung doesn’t have a chance to repeat her win this year
With the various music awards shows gearing up to start handing out this year’s results, there were reports out today that the highly contentious “4 Stations Joint Media Award” will be cancelled. According to a source, the 4 stations (RTHK, Commercial Radio, Metro Radio, and TVB) held a meeting the day before yesterday and with a vote of 2 to 1, decided to cancel the award this year. If true, then it means that last year’s winner – EEG’s Joey Yung – will not have an opportunity to win the award again this year. In addition, after the meeting, TVB decided to play hardball by delaying the official joint announcement of the award’s cancellation.Due to the ongoing dispute between TVB and the big 4 record companies, last year’s JSG Awards Ceremony (TVB’s music awards show) did not give out any awards to the big 4 artists, causing artists such as Eason Chan, Kay Tse, Hacken Lee, etc. to become ‘sacrificial lambs’ of the dispute. The results of the JSG awards last year were highly contentious and sparked much debate from all sides. A few days ago, our paper was the first to reveal that the 4 stations held their first meeting back at the end of October to discuss whether the Media award should be cancelled this year. At that time, the organizer of the meeting – government station RTHK – suggested casting votes to decide the outcome. [TN: The results of that meeting were inconclusive.]
