Gibraltar wins Miss World 2009

Gibraltar's Kaiane Aldorino claimed the title of Miss World 2009 on Saturday, defeating 111 other hopefuls at a glittering ceremony in South Africa.

"Thank you South Africa, this is the most wonderful moment of my life," said a tearful Aldorino, whose website describes her as a 22-year-old human resources clerk who loves dancing and spending time with loved ones.

Confetti rained down the stage as Aldorino, representing a British territory at the western end of the Mediterranean Sea with a population of less than 30,000, accepted the crown.

Mexico's Perla Beltran came second, with South African entry Tatum Keshwar taking third place.

The African-themed gala event at a Johannesburg convention centre attracted a multi-national crowd, waving country flags and cheering wildly for their favourite contestants.

Miss India, Pooja Chopra, a hot favourite with the crowd, got eliminated in the top 16, after winning the "beauty with a purpose" title for her charity work.

"The build up to this event has been phenomenal, the girls have had a time of their lives in South Africa," said Chinese television presenter Angela Chow, who hosted the show.

Smoker-face: Lady Gaga faces potential fine after smoking onstage in Canada

She's known for pushing the boundaries on what people expect of a popstar, but this time Lady Gaga may have gone to far.

For performing in Canada, the 23-year-old shocked attendees by lighting up a cigarette and inhaling deeply - despite the fact smoking indoors is illegal in British Columbia.

Wearing a structured gold, bejewelled leotard, black leather gloves and fishnet tights, the Poker Face singer obviously couldn't wait until she finished the sold out gig in Vancouver to indulge.

This comes just days after the New York native met Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II when she performed at the Royal Variety show.

The star went for a much less revealing look and thankfully the only smoke onstage during that set came from automated machines.

According to British Columbia law, smoking in all public spaces such as restaurants, pubs and private clubs, offices, malls, conference centres, arenas, community halls, government buildings and schools is banned.

Those found guilty of breaking this law may be liable to a fine.

However, as the singer clearly enjoyed the cigarette on stage last night, the potential consequences seemed to be the last thing on her mind.

Miley Cyrus songwriter Jessi Alexander: 'The Climb' being pulled from Grammy noms is 'devastating'

Songwriter Jessi Alexander and her co-writer Jon Mabe may be two of the briefest Grammy nominees in history: “The Climb” got pulled from the Best Song Written for a Motion Picture race yesterday, after Disney determined that it hadn’t been written specifically for the Miley Cyrus vehicle Hannah Montana: The Movie (as Grammy rules for soundtrack songs require), and withdrew it from the category. Naturally, this came as quite the shock to Alexander, who has been under contract as a Disney songwriter for, as she puts it, “three and a half years that have been really good to me.” We are still awaiting comment from a Disney rep, but in the meantime, we spoke to Alexander about the “gray areas” of the songwriting process, and her questions regarding the technicality that got “The Climb” disqualified.

EW: I’m assuming you found out earlier than the rest of us that this was happening. Did Disney tell you? Or did the Grammys tell you?

Jessi Alexander: Some of the Disney brand staff members congratulated me about the nomination. So I spent one night on a high. And then the following morning was a new low, when I was told it was gonna be pulled by Disney.

Did they talk to you before they pulled it?
They were in the process of pulling it. And of course, my take was, I understand that there are rules — although I knew nothing about the rules when I found out about the nomination — but let’s at least just tell NARAS where the gray areas are and let them make the decision. But Disney made the decision, and I was just told.

So was the song written specifically for the Hannah Montana movie?
This is the gray area. The story is, originally, me and Jon Mabe sat down as songwriters, like we do every day, and I had this melody that came to me on the way to work that morning. I knew that it was special. I knew it was pop. And I knew it was Disney. We started a song. It was actually called “It’s the Climb,” and it was a more spiritual song, sung in third person. And it was really about my woes, and Jon’s woes in the music business. But when I write songs, being at Disney, I turn them in and of course think they all should be submitted to film and television. That was one of the reasons I signed at Disney, was to hopefully get placements at film and television. So before filming, Peter Chelsom, the director of Hannah Montana: The Movie, actually came to Nashville and heard my music, and wanted me to submit songs for the movie. I put the song “It’s the Climb” on a CD, and he called back within weeks and said the song was gonna be an integral part of the movie, and the only thing he needed was for me to change what I would consider to be a substantial amount of the song. And that’s where the gray area is. For me, when you change something from third person to first person, it can change the whole meaning of a line. And I remember Jon and I wrestling over taking words out—there was a line about prayer. Like I said, it was a more spiritual song. And we had to think about, you know, how much can we change to keep the integrity of the song. But after many back and forth drafts, we all came to a great place, and it felt like it was perfect for the movie, and they told me, you know, “This is perfect for Miley, it’s gonna change her life, gonna change your life.” As a songwriter, my job is just to follow these wonderful little pieces of music and lyrics that I get. And so many don’t find homes. It’s one in a million that you get this kind of placement. It’s hard to say when a song is finished. And it’s hard to say what you’re writing a song for. And that’s not my job. That’s why I have a publisher. And that’s why I feel like NARAS needs to reassess the eligibility requirements for this particular category. Because I think I’m not the first, and I won’t be the last.

Are you upset with Disney that they did this without consulting you and giving you a chance to plead your case?
I did get to plead my case with NARAS. But yeah, you should talk to them. Disney pulled the song. So. Yeah. It sucks. I’ve got flowers and champagne showing up and people constantly congratulating me, and now I don’t know how to respond.

Do you want to try and regain your eligibility?
I don’t even know if that’s possible. I know that there’s been big, big people out there fighting for me, and being my advocate. This has been a huge debate within NARAS. Because it’s a hard call. Disney’s standpoint, and you should get this from them, is that the song has to be commissioned. But that’s another hard part. I am in some ways commissioned, being a Disney writer. I get paid to write songs for them. And then also, you know, “It’s the Climb” was a different song than the one that found its way into the film. You can look at it a million ways. And I’m sure they wouldn’t do this if there wasn’t a true belief that it wasn’t eligible. To be honest, it’s devastating. I’ve had such a roller coaster ride in this business — I’ve lost record deals, I’ve had big songs get kicked off big records, I’ve gone through a lot. But this is a new low. Just to have NARAS grant me a nomination and then take it away has been tough. And humiliating, really. It makes it look like I tried to submit it, or I’m covering up. We all know how difficult it is to get a Grammy, especially as a songwriter. There’s only two categories for us, and those are so sought after and hard to get to. And the other thing that’s sad for me is that this song has just been such a blessing to so many people, to Miley’s fans, for me and my family. I hate for it to be tainted at all with politics. When I got that melody, I couldn’t have said, “This is for Hannah Montana: The Movie!” I have to just write songs. And I send them to my publisher and they go out and find a home. That’s the process. The real question is, Who submitted it? And don’t they have a screening process? Why put an artist or songwriter through this? By taking this song out, how does that alter the voting? People who voted for me could have voted for something else. There’s a lot of weird parts to this. But like I said, I really want to do whatever to make sure this doesn’t happen to another songwriter. If nothing else, the good that can come is that hopefully this particular category will be reassessed to make sure that the eligibility is black and white.

The Google Phone, Unlocked (Confirmed And More Details)

Last Time, we started seeing some Tweets from Google employees and others about a new Android-powered Google phone that was apparently handed out at an “all hands” meeting. Now Google is confirming that it is indeed “dogfood” testing a new Android device with employees around the world.

But this isn’t just another Android phone. Very trustworthy sources who have seen the phone say that it is the Google Phone we first wrote about last month (despite the uninformed saying we were dreaming). It will be branded Google and sold by Google as an unlocked phone, which could change everything. As we wrote in our original post:

Here’s what we know: we’ve been told the Google Nexus 1 (yes, the Google phone Arrington nailed) will be sold directly by Google online directly. But that’s also the “first retail channel” and it will be sold by a carrier/s. Apparently the Wall Street Journal is running a story tomorrow saying what we just told you. And heck, we don’t charge subscription fees…

Google is building their own branded phone that they’ll sell directly and through retailers. They were long planning to have the phone be available by the holidays, but it has now slipped to early 2010. The phone will be produced by a major phone manufacturer but will only have Google branding (Microsoft did the same thing with their first Zunes, which were built by Toshiba).

There won’t be any negotiation or compromise over the phone’s design of features – Google is dictating every last piece of it. No splintering of the Android OS that makes some applications unusable. Like the iPhone for Apple, this phone will be Google’s pure vision of what a phone should be.

An image on the Android Dveloper site (click on "Dev Phones") is apparently the HTC-made successor to the Android Dev Phone 1, and is already in the hands of select Google employees.

The phone itself is being built by HTC, with a lot of input from Google. It seems to be a tailored version of the HTC Passion or the related HD2 (Unlocker scored some leaked pictures back in October which are of the same phone).

Here are the details we know so far about the phone: It will be called the Google Phone and will launch in early January, 2010. It won’t be sold by any one carrier, but instead will be an unlocked GSM phone. In the U.S., that means T-Mobile and possibly AT&T, whose exclusivity deal with the iPhone is about to run out. It will be running Android 2.1

The phone is “really, really fast,” says someone who has seen one in action. It runs on a Snapdragon chip, has a super high-resolution OLED touchscreen, is thinner than the iPhone, has no keyboard, and two mics. The mic on the back of the phone helps eliminate background noise, and it also has a “weirdly” large camera for a phone. And if you don’t like the touchscreen keyboard, a voice-to-text feature is supposed to let you dictate emails and notes by speaking directly into the phone.

Jolin Tsai avoids ex-lover, tops 2009 album sales chart

With fewer rivals including rumored ex-boyfriend Jay Chou, Jolin Tsai claims first place on 2009 album sales charts. Her album “Flower Butterfly” sold 130,000 copies and was the only album this year that broke the 100,000 mark. Following in second place, Fahrenheit’s “Love You More and More” sold 60,000 copies. Show Luo’s “Trendy Man” and Wang Lee Hom “Heart Beat” tied for 3rd place, each selling 50,000 albums. Fish Leong closed out the top 5 with “Fall in Love & Songs”, selling 45,000 copies.

Taiwan’s Apple Daily newspaper made these conclusions based on the business reports released by the record companies. They started to count record sales for albums released this year. Wang Lee Hom and Show Luo, who both released their albums in December of last year, were included. Jolin Tsai’s “Flower Butterfly” was confirmed to be this year’s champion in record sales. But when she received the news overseas, Jolin exclaimed: “Really? First place? Thank you everyone, next year I will challenge the stage again.”

Compared to Jolin’s 2003 hit album “Magic” sales of 350,000, her CD sales have decreased by 220,000 copies. This shows that the public’s way of purchasing music has changed drastically. Fahrenheit’s second place sales of 60,000 copies shows that the music industry is shrinking. Yesterday, Fahrenheit commented: “Good results are an encouragement, we will continue to work hard.”

As for Show Luo, his popularity has continued to grow year by year. His new albums bring better sales than the previous ones. Last year, Show’s album placed 9th. This year, Show has risen to 3rd place. So he said with confidence regarding the music industry: “Even though it is a little depressing, we’ll still find a chance to start anew.”

TVXQ KO’s Big Bang on Martzzang.com battle

Back on December 9th, the retail website martzzang.com pitted TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki's 3rd Asia Tour Concert album (the Red Team) versus Big Bang 2009 Live Concert album (the Bule Team should be Blue but its in Engrish).

The battle was on who would have more album sales on the website until December 11th. Well, it seems TVXQ has overwhelmingly given Big Bang a knockout by having 95% of the total sales.

This was a smart move on martzzang.com's part, because ever since the battle was put up, fan girls of both groups immediately went to the site and started buying albums in bulk to support their favorite group. So much so that the servers crashed because it couldn't handle the volume of traffic. Because of this huge success, martzzang plans to have more battles between idols in the near future.

Unfortunately, the sales were heavily one sided. I was surprised of the huge margin in which Big Bang lost by, I thought they would've put up a better fight. There's no shame in losing though, they're still very talented with dedicated fans. As for TVXQ, even despite their current turmoil, the fans are still rabid as ever.

Thanks to joe and big55555bang for the tips, also thanks to sharingyoochun for sharing the information. The supposed original article is on newsen but I cant seem to place it. However, you can see the results on martzzang's website.

Matt Damon's Good Will Hunting 2?

Ready for a sequel to Good Will Hunting?

Yeah, neither are we.

But Matt Damon is revisiting a tiny moment from his Oscar-winning film in The People Speak, a documentary premiering Sunday on the History Channel.

As Will Hunting, the actor tells Robin Williams' character that if he really wants to study history, he should read Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. As Matt Damon, the actor has turned the author's follow-up, Voices of a People's History of the United States, into a star-studded history lesson/television event.

Damon gathered Josh Brolin to coproduce, as well as Viggo Mortenson, Morgan Freeman, Bob Dylan, Kerry Washington, Pink, Bruce Springsteen, Marisa Tomei and a slew of other A-listers to participate in the passion project.

And, not unlike Hunting, this concept began in Matt's head more than a decade ago.

Actually, the 29-year-old's involvement in The People Speak began several decades ago, when he and his mother moved into the house next door to Zinn's. Matt was 5 years old at the time, and A People's History was far from finished.

"When I was 10, I had one of the first copies of that book, and I took it to school on Columbus Day to read about Columbus to a shocked group of kids," the star told E! News. "The book's been a part of my life since then."

Of course, Matt realizes that a history lesson isn't everyone's idea of entertainment, but promises that this is "electric."

"If I were studying history now, I would've love to have had Frederick Douglass read by Morgan Freeman! It's a way to really connect to these words and these peoples' experiences that's a little harder when you're reading," he says. "It's just electric when you hear the words spoken by someone."

"It was clear in what this was about and what we were trying to do," Brolin explained to us. "It's not a vanity thing."

Everyone involved in this project clearly hopes it will inspire people to be leaders and incite change.

"You start asking yourself some of those questions today, like, 'What am I doing? Am I an active citizen here?' " Matt says.

All those great intentions aside, we won't tell anyone if you tune in just to see these hot actors. We can't say that isn't playing a role in our DVR setting.

Windows Mobile 7 delayed until the end of 2010?

Remember the good old days when Windows Mobile was at the top of its game? When the Windows Mobile-powered Dell Axim went head to head with the Palm Tungsten T or when Palm shook up its Treo line by releasing the Windows Mobile-driven Treo 700WX? That was then and this is now, however, and the now is not looking so good for Windows Mobile. Phil Moore, head of Microsoft’s mobility division in the UK, admitted that Windows Mobile 7 is being delayed until late 2010. With iPhone OS 4.0 and a sure-to-be-newer version of Android on the horizon, could a delay until the end of be close to a death sentence for Windows Mobile?

So Ji Sub & Han Ji Min to get married?

A rumor regarding actor So Ji Sup, actress Han Ji Min and future wedding bells has been floating around amongst fans.

Many fans are abuzz, speculating that the two lovebirds will be announcing their wedding plans to the public on the 12th. But this is just a rumor that supposedly started on the 11th, from a couple people related to the entertainment industry.

The two played the main leads in SBS's drama Cain and Abel, and it is easy to suspect a possible offset relationship, because they played lovers onset. Many rumors regarding the two having a off-set relationship were generated back in August during the drama's filming.

In response, So Ji Sup had stated, "We talk on the phone every now and then to see how we're doing. When I get to work with a female celebrity, it's true that I ask for her number first, but I never get around to calling her."

Regarding the wedding rumor, a representative of Han Ji Min's entertainment company stated, "We heard about the rumor. A lot of people asked us about this matter already. We are quite shocked, and the rumor is not true. If it were true, why wouldn't we have already revealed this?"

So, to clear things up to the fans: According to company representatives, these two are neither dating nor tying the knot... although it would be nice if they did, because they would make one FINE looking baby!
