Hope For Haiti Now Tops Billboard Albums Chart

Susan Boyle slips to #2, Spoon see their strongest Billboard debut on next week's chart.

When the 20-track Hope for Haiti Now debuts at #1 on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart, it will be the first time in the 54-year history of the chart that a digital-only release has hit the top spot.

All proceeds from the $7.99 Hope for Haiti album — which was available for pre-order through iTunes before Friday's all-star telethon and is now also available through Amazon's MP3 service and Rhapsody — will be donated to the Haiti relief funds. Thanks to sales of 171,000, Haiti Now easily beat out Susan Boyle's I Dreamed a Dream, which holds steady at #2 on sales of 86,000, for a nine-week total just shy of 3.4 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan

Kristen Stewart Turned Away From Utah Bar

Kristen Stewart — perhaps best known Twilight heroine Bella– was denied entry into a Utah bar last weekend after security staff discovered the starlet was underage. The 19-year-old actress was harshly rebuffed by bouncers after she attempted to get into Ed Hardy Shoes Happy Hour at Park City hotspot Tao — an event exclusively for Grown & Sexy Sophisticates 21 & over.

“As they started walking in, the bouncer stopped them and asked for their IDs. When he informed Kirsten that she couldn’t enter because she was underage, she and her friends seemed pretty surprised,” chuckles an onlooker, who witnessed the Jan. 23 incident.

“Her friends tried to reason with the bouncer and told them that they just wanted to sit down and relax for 30 minutes but the bouncer still declined them. They huddled up for a few minutes, discussing what to do next and eventually left,” the spy squealed.

The actress is currently in Park City for the Sundance Film Festival, where she is promoting her upcoming musical biopic The Runaways.

Kristen is no stranger to controversy; the starlet was famously photographed smoking a marijuana joint and also came under fire after she was accused of underage drinking.

Why Apple will sell millions of iPads in 2010

Yesterday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the iPad, a slate tablet-style computer that bridges the gap between a MacBook and an iPod touch.



After letting the announcement sink in, I believe Apple will sell millions of them before 2010 draws to a close.

I admit, I didn’t want to give Apple any praise. I recognize the enthusiasm with which the press cover the company, and I didn’t want to give in to the hype. For months leading up to the announcement of the device, I’ve been skeptical of a tablet’s purpose and fit into the daily life of the average user — whether folks need another device, whether it will be too pricey, whether they’ll pay for a data plan, and so forth.

Is the Apple iPad OS just unfinished? & User Interface in Pictures

Bear with me on this one, alright? It’s a long shot, but part of me thinks this is a set up. Apple hasn’t gone over things like how notifications work, they didn’t address multitasking, and in some places, it felt like Steve & Co. purposely rushed over certain areas in the announcement.



What if there is going to be an iPhone SDK event/announcement before the Apple iPad actually hits stores? Apple said “late March” for the non-3G unit to be available and that’s curiously right when Apple usually holds its iPhone/iPod OS SDK events and where we’d most likely see iPhone OS 4.0 appear. Is it possible this is just to get the ball moving and Apple has some bigger stuff up its sleeve already? Multitasking, redone notifications, and a whole lot more, coming to both the iPhone platform as well as the iPad? Now, why release an SDK based on iPhone OS 3.2 and have devs code for that and then have to redo it, you might be asking, but iPhone 4.0, if it was announced in March would probably be a beta and not released to the public until June/July. That would give developers time to redo any applications for full 4.0 compatibility. Plus, the general public would get iPhone OS 3.2 while developers concurrently used iPhone OS 4.0 and developed for both that and the iPad. Maybe just wishful thinking, but heck, it would make sense.

Confirmed – iPad to ship in Europe in March

Apple’s European PR team have confirmed the impending arrival, inside two months, of the Apple iPad to European shores.

“The Wi-Fi version will ship worldwide in March,” said a spokesperson, but she added, “Watch this space for Wi-Fi plus 3G.”

In other words it’s clear Apple is still in negotiations with mobile carriers over which will stock the new device.

Unfortunately there is no word yet on international pricing.

However, normally Apple devices are more expensive than a straight dollar to Euro conversion would suggest, so the base Wi-Fi-only model is quite likely to come in at over €400.

Meanwhile, tell us what you think of the iPad. Love it? Hate it? Will Europeans like lugging this device around or will your stick to “normal” laptops, netbooks, whatever.

Techcrunch: The iPad Is Like Holding The Future. But Only Because I Graduated From iPhone School.

When the iPhone first launched in 2007 I was sure I wasn’t going to buy one. Then I played with one. 15 minutes later I was $600 poorer. It was arguably the best tech purchase I’ve ever made. After the Apple event today, I got a chance to play with the new iPad for quite a bit of time. My takeaway? The thing is beautiful and fast. Really fast. If you’ll excuse my hyperbole, it felt like I was holding the future. But is it a must-have? That’s a complicated question.

The quick and dirty answer is: for many people, right now, no. Unlike the iPhone, which filled an already well-established need (cellular telephone usage), there is no existing need the iPad fills. That is, unless you’re an iPhone or iPod touch user. If that’s the case, the iPad does fill a couple of needs — it’s the best way to use apps, and more importantly, the best way to browse the web in a style that is likely your preferred method: by touching it.

That’s the key that Apple only hinted at today. When it launches, the iPad’s initial target audience is iPhone and iPod touch users. Why? Because they are already very comfortable with the way you need to interact with this device. The moment I picked up the iPad today I knew exactly what to do with it. It was second-nature. It was the iPhone, only larger — and that felt good. Meanwhile, I watched some other people who said they didn’t use an iPhone regularly interact with the iPad for the first time and it was not nearly as seamless.

ANGELINA Jolie has infuriated partner Brad Pitt — by telling the actor she wants custody of their six children!

The Tomb Raider star apparently shocked Brad when she said that whatever happens in their relationship, she’ll be the one bringing up the kids.

“They were disagreeing on how best to discipline them,” one loose-lipped insider told American tabloid the National Enquirer. “Angie just lost it and Brad that the kids were hers, so he should just but out.

“The kids have been acting out since Angie and Brad started fighting so much. Things would only get worse if they were living full-time with just one parent. Angelina just couldn’t handle it, even though she thinks she’d be a great single mom.

“Brad doesn’t want to lose his deep connection with the kids. He believes he deserves to be a part of their lives just as much as she does.”
