Miley Cyrus: A Colossal Disappointment

Over the past couple weeks, THG has been harsher than usual when it comes to Miley Cyrus. We've referred to her scantily-clad European performances as pathetic and desperate.

To their credit, Miley fans have stuck up for their gal. They've argued that she isn't acting any differently than past artists who have wanted to reach an older audience by shedding their clothing or grinding with girls.

So, why has THG singled out Cyrus in such a manner? Simply put: because she's wasted an opportunity to be a different kind of role model to young women around the world.

The second we met Britney Spears as a professional singer, she was wearing a Catholic schoolgirl's outfit and singing about sex. She made it clear from day one that she was a provocative artist, one whose lack of true singing ability meant she'd be relying on raunchy acts to remain relevant.

Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’ video is a sad misstep

“Don’t ask, don’t tell” doesn’t pass muster in the army Lady Gaga assembled for her “Alejandro” video.

Her new video, which debuted online yesterday afternoon, is an orgy of German military imagery featuring a platoon of buff, shirtless soldiers goose-stepping and grinding against the nearly-nude Gaga. No need to ask, you can tell: as far as sex and art, fashion and ripping off Madonna’s “Express Yourself” video, anything goes in Gaga land.

The only thing prohibited is fun.

Gaga’s last video, “Telephone” with Beyonce, pimped the star’s whacked-out vision: prison girl fights, bikinis constructed from Fourth of July bunting, a pair of sunglasses made from burning cigarettes. It was a mess, with plot twists and violence Quentin Tarantino would find silly and cartoonish. But it had a sense of humor

Not “Alejandro.” Directed by Madonna-collaborator and fashion photographer Steven Klein, it presents a dark, somber and sad Lady Gaga; when she’s not sandwiched between writhing, rippled torsos, she’s brooding. The plot is hard to decipher, but it’s clearly not a story that ends happily ever after.

IE9 Responds To Safari 5 With A Side-By-Side Hardware Acceleration Video

Yesterday, Apple released the latest version of its web browser, Safari 5. In their release notes, they highlight not only new features, but also the fact that it’s faster than the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox. One competitor they didn’t mention was the most-used web browser in the world: Internet Explorer. Today, Microsoft has responded to that.

In a post on their Blogging Windows blog, the IE team has posted a video showing the latest version of IE, IE9 (still in beta testing), running against Safari 5. The result? IE smokes Safari. It’s not even close.

iOS 4 gold works with any compatible iPhone / iPod touch via iTunes 9.2, jailbreak also updated

Want to get your hands on an iOS 4-equipped device now without being a registered Apple developer? As a number of readers have pointed out, it seems yesterday's gold build release works on any applicable iPhone / iPod touch whether or not its UDID has been sent to the dev center. Now that the previous restraint has been lifted, the only requirement now is a copy of iTunes 9.2 -- currently for Macs only and still blocked by the developer gate, but once you manage to obtain the appropriate files, the only thing in your path is time itself. Sure enough, we just got through installing the build on an unregistered iPhone without a hitch. Details available via Gumball Tech, and please, don't forget to back up your data ahead of time.

In less rule-abiding news, the not-quite-surgical hand of the jailbreak community has taken a gander at the gold. A developer known as msft.guy, whose previous credentials includes recently-released binary "which enabled blacksn0w unlock port for iPhone 3GS on iOS 4 Beta 4" according to Redmond Pie, has updated PwnageTool for yesterday's update. As always, proceed with that one at your own risk, and if you're curious but hesitant, the ever-reliable iPhone Dev Team promise a full jailbreak / unlock suite later this month. Either way, video proof is available after the break.

Goo Hye Sun wants Big Bang’s T.O.P for her next movie

Ming Dao takes 80% pay cut to film new SETTV idol drama

As we previously reported, Eddie Peng was rumored to be potentially casted in SETTV’s new drama, “鍾無艷” (Wu Yen). But news just came out today that it will be Ming Dao to play the role. Furthermore, he is willing to take an 80% pay cut for it! Yesterday, Ming Dao had already arrived at SETTV to try out the different image styles for the new role.

Three years ago, after finishing the drama, Ying Ye 3 Jia 1 (櫻野3加1), Ming Dao left SETTV and ventured to the Mainland because he felt the pay at SETTV was too low. As the top Taiwanese idol drama lead, his pay rose up to a hundred fifty thousand RMB per episode (~ NT$710,000). Although he has starred in other dramas in the last few years like Knock Knock Loving You and Always Smile!, the ratings to these dramas were unable to break his previous records at SETTV. In order to maintain his top status as an idol drama actor, he is willing to give up his high pay in Mainland to take on a new project in Taiwan.

HTC EVO 4G sold out across the country

You snooze, you lose. That’s exactly what thousands of EVO 4G hopefuls are learning today as the smartphone that smashed Sprint sales records has gone out of stock across the country. So what can we learn from all of this? While sitting outside a retailer in a lawn chair the night before sale looks absolutely ridiculous, at least it pretty much guarantees that you won’t have to deal with the heartbreak of it being out of stock after 200,000 of them are snapped up.

Where's the Mac? Apple's WWDC an iPhone world

At WWDC Monday there was something amiss besides the overloaded demo-disrupting public Wi-Fi. At the conference for Apple developers, there was not a single mention of the company's core desktop operating system, Mac OS X, nor any hint of when the next version would be coming.

It's very possible the closed-door sessions this week will include a lot of Mac OS talk. It's also possible Apple could give those developers a preview this week or next. Or that Apple could be waiting to host an entirely separate event for the Mac, as it does for the iPod, iOS, and more recently, the iPad. But in light of the pattern of the last few years, and the company's growing mobile device and mobile platform businesses, Mac OS X's absence Monday is still curious.

By this time last year, we had seen at least two previews of OS X 10.6, starting with WWDC 2008. Developers got an even more detailed peek at WWDC 2009, and by September 2009 it was ready for customers. That pattern has been true of the last several desktop OS releases from Apple: a preview a year or so ahead of the actual release. It's helpful because it gives developers time to work with it as well as a chance to show the public, even briefly, that Apple is constantly thinking and moving its technology forward.

Lindsay Lohan Avoids Jail for Second Time in Two Weeks

Lindsay Lohan has narrowly avoided time behind bars -- again.

On Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel issued a bench warrant, claiming the actress, 23, was "in violation for conditions on bail" because her SCRAM bracelet went off at an MTV Movie Awards after-party. (Lohan was ordered to wear the alcohol-monitoring bracelet last month following a failed court appearance in connection to her two DUI convictions.)

A short time later, Lohan's bondsman delivered the $20,000 BAIL -- 10% of the $200,000 bail -- saving the actress from spending any immediate time behind bars.

Lohan is due in court July 6 for a hearing.

Lohan's latest drama began Tuesday afternoon when District Attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison announced that the actress' SCRAM device was set off by "an alcohol-related violation" at the MTV bash. But in a series of Twitter messages, Lohan denied it, writing: "I did not violate anything ... at all ... My scram wasn't set off Its physically impossible ... I've been more than I'm compliance [sic] & feeling great."

Glee's Lea Michele "Acts Like She's Better Than the Cast"

Art imitates life for Glee star Lea Michele.

A source tells Us Weekly the actress (who plays uptight show standout Rachel Berry), 23, is a diva on the set of the Fox show, which airs its season finale Tuesday night.

"Lea acts like she's better than the rest of the cast," says the insider. "But the thing is, she legitimately is."

Another set source says, "She's sweet, but she has her moments."

Apt to boss around makeup artists and other crew members, "She has very clear ideas about what she wants to do and how she wants to look. I think she's just Type-A, like her character."

A second pal points out that Lea has "always wanted to be a star," and, in a classic Hollywood move, "she has become super-strict about her diet. She is a vegan now and says she hasn't eaten cheese in a year!"'
