Elin Nordegren Woods: The Cost of Silence

They say silence is golden. In this case, think Fort Knox golden.

We reported yesterday evening that the Tiger Woods divorce is final, or nearly final, and that his estranged wife Elin could receive a $750 million settlement.

Today, additional sources say that while nothing has been officially filed, lawyers for both sides are close to reaching an agreement for "about $700 million."

That mammoth sum, which entails Elin Woods keep all details of Tiger's life and cheating scandal confidential, has grown as negotiations have progressed.

Elin has balked at the confidentiality clause, and thus driven up the price, not because she has a strong desire to tell all, but because it's a bargaining chip.

Smart woman.

Andrew Garfield cast as the new Spider-Man

A virtual unknown has landed the coveted lead role in the upcoming resurrection of the "Spider-Man" movie franchise, ending an intense search that attracted virtually every eligible actor in the business.

Andrew Garfield, 26, will take over the Peter Parker/Spider-Man role played by Tobey Maguire in a trilogy that generated more than $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office, distributor Columbia Pictures said on Thursday.

The Sony Corp unit will release the film in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Garfield, who was born in Los Angeles and raised in Britain, has headlined only one movie, the little-seen UK crime drama "Boy A," for which he won a Bafta award in 2008.

His upcoming releases include the thriller "Never Let Me Go," in which he co-stars with Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, and the Facebook movie "The Social Network."

Garfield also had small roles in such box office weaklings as "The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus" and "Lions for Lambs." Much of his resume boasts British stage and TV work.

Expert Says iPhone 4 Has the Best Smartphone Display

The article by PJ Jacobowitz "Is the iPhone's LCD the Best?" on PCMag.com with lab measurements comparing four high-end smartphone displays is especially interesting because it has the first published lab results for the iPhone 4 Retina display. Below are my own comments for some of the PCMag article results.

The iPhone 4 is 25 percent brighter than the iPhone 3GS, which was the previous record holder, so the iPhone 4 is now the brightness king for smartphones.

Steve Jobs promised a Retina display Contrast Ratio of 800 and PCMag measured 1097, 37 percent more than the Apple advertised spec. That's very impressive because you seldom ever see manufacturers conservatively understate their specs to that degree - but then see my widely reported (and often misquoted) comments on the iPhone 4 Retina Display, where it falls short on that spec. The iPhone 4 is a tremendous improvement over the iPhone 3GS, which only had a measured Contrast Ratio of 138. But note that the Motorola Droid remains the Contrast Ratio king of mobile LCDs with 1436, which I measured in our own DisplayMate Lab tests.

Toshiba Libretto W100 preview

The Toshiba Libretto W100 made a guest appearance on the Engadget Show last week, and since we got to spend a bit more time with the dualscreen laptop we thought it was only right to release some more impressions into the ether. We also got confirmation from Toshiba that the somewhat-of-a-concept-PC will be hitting retail channels in August, including Amazon, and will cost $1,100. It may be one of the only dualscreen tablets on the market, but no matter how you break it down that price seems a little outrageous. But you wouldn't make up your mind before reading some further impressions and watching a close up video of the screens working in tandem, would you? Well then, we'll see you after the break.

Angelina Jolie: Shiloh "Wanted Me to Get My Hair Cut Short"

Like daughter, like mother?

When Shiloh Jolie-Pitt saw her mom Angelina Jolie in the trailer for Salt, the tot with the pixie-cut had some pointers.

"Shiloh wanted me to get my hair cut short," Jolie told reporters Wednesday at a press conference in Cancun, Mexico for the action flick.

Jolie, 35, is in Mexico for film promotional duties with her four eldest: Maddox, 8, Pax, 6, Zahara, 5, and Shiloh, 4. The tykes saw the film's trailer for the first time in their hotel, Jolie explained.

"Half of them were uninterested," the actress said. Her second eldest was concerned when he saw Jolie get roughed up in one shot.

"Pax got upset because someone was trying to hurt his mom. He saw [my] feet wrapped and he got mad. But then I explained to him that I'm fine."

She added: "They're very confused, to be honest. I think they don't quite know what to think. Even the change of hair color is confusing for them," she said of her blonde locks in the flick. Where were the kids during her meet and greet with the press? "They're in the pool," Jolie explained.

The star also dished on love Brad Pitt, who stayed behind in L.A. with twins Vivienne and Knox, nearly 2. Pitt, 46, was "very supportive" of her taking on the role after taking a year off to have the twins.

Kristen Stewart to Twihards: Don't Murder Me!

We mean this with all due respect, but perhaps Kristen Stewart should quit acting. She really doesn't seem to enjoy the spotlight, does she?

Aside from making inappropriate comments (such as comparing the paparazzi to rapists, which she quickly apologized for), the actress comes across as painfully awkward in interviews. It's refreshing, but it's also just strange.

Now, in an interview with British magazine Hello!, Stewart admits that she has serious fear of fame. Especially fame at the level she's achieved.

"I don't feel very comfortable on the red carpet," she said. "I look out there at a thousand people and I realize they could rush me and assassinate me. No security could protect me. Ostensibly they're fans, but I think about them turning on me."

Kristen says she "struggles to keep myself from crying" during public appearances and shows many signs of social anxiety disorder, a legitimate phobia that is triggered by perceived scrutiny from those around you.

There is good news for Stewart: at least she can go home and have Robert Pattinson hold her tightly every evening.

Rumor: Apple has a CDMA iPhone, just needs Verizon to ink a deal

Today, The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple wrote an interesting article that should give a lot of confused people some perspective on this whole Verizon iPhone business. Not surprisingly, Dalrymple reports that Apple already has a fully functional CDMA iPhones, lurking in the shadows of 1 Infinite Loop, that is ready to go into production at a moment’s notice. The problem, according Dalrymple, is that Apple and Verizon have yet to finalize a deal. Having the iPhone hardware lying on a shelf waiting to be mass produced is beneficial for both companies; as it won’t have to scramble to make up for lost time once the deal is struck. Apple also has a long history of developing products well in advance — a good example of this was its Intel-compatible version of OS X. So why then did Bloomberg so confidently report that Verizon will have the iPhone in January? That could simply be a negotiating tactic, something which would not at all be out of the ordinary.

Microsoft tech lets batteries load in either direction

Microsoft has started licensing a technology that could come in handy for anyone who as ever tried to put new batteries in a flashlight in the middle of the night.

The company said Thursday it has a patent for designing devices so that batteries can be inserted either way, regardless of polarity. Dubbed InstaLoad, Microsoft said, the technology is now available for license to other companies.

Further, the company said it will offer the license royalty-free to companies making products for people with hearing, vision, or learning disabilities.

Battery maker Duracell and flashlight manufacturer AE Light are among the first companies to license the technology, Microsoft said.

The technology appears to work simply enough, including both positive and negative contacts at both ends. A center contact at the top supports a positive charge, while the wider bottom contact supports negative polarity.
