Why an iPod Touch With Cameras Would Be a Serial Killer

A new iPod touch with the iPhone 4's dual cameras—specifically its awesome 5-megapixel shooter—is more than just another iPod touch. It's a true killer gadget.

A friend of mine is moving to France for a year. Her contract with Verizon is up for renewal. She's not a super dweeb, but she was considering getting a decent Android phone—the Incredible, or Droid X—and simply running it on Wi-Fi, using it as her ultra pocketable computer for music, web browsing, Facebook, email and importantly, an internet-connected camera alongside a cheap pay-as-you-go phone for basic service over there. The Verizon salesperson inexplicably told that wouldn't work at all. I told her it simply wouldn't be very good. What she needs, really, is an iPod touch with the iPhone 4's retina display and dual cameras.

Inexplicably, there's never been a credible iPod touch competitor. The Zune HD doesn't run apps (the handful it's got don't count), so it's limited in what it can do—it's simply a very good music player. Android is still a miserable place to be when it comes to media, and on top of that, all of the Android "tablets" have been thoroughly mediocre. There's nothing out there that's remotely like the iPod touch. And obviously, there's a demand for it, since it's the only iPod whose sales are still growing.

An iPod touch with the iPhone 4's remarkable-for-a-phone camera would be the gadget that's effectively a ninja assassin squad against a whole range of other middling gadgets. A 32GB model would be $300, assuming Apple keeps the same pricing scheme as always. (They will.) A FlipHD is bulkier, shoots the same 720p video, and it's about $150. The average cheapish point-and-shoot is around $150 too, and doesn't shoot photos that are much better in the hands of a normie. An iPod touch with the iPhone 4's excellent camera would replace both of them—with some superior capabilities, like easy uploading to Flickr or Facebook—while doing all of the other things an iPod touch is awesome at for a minimal amount of extra scratch.

The camera app is less flexible than a dedicated camera, this is true. There's no white balance control, or exposure compensation, or other advanced controls you'd find on even middling point-and-shoots. But the people who could replace their point-and-shoot with an iPod touch are the kind of people who didn't mess with that stuff anyway: They point. They shoot. And excellent imaging apps like Hipstamatic and Pano deliver the kinds of effects and fireworks the average person is looking for in their photos. Even I've semi-replaced my S90 with my iPhone 4, for 90 percent of the quick photos I take.

An iPod touch with a camera. It's a powerful proposition. The fact that it can replace a camera makes it that much more powerful of a gadget, that much more of a threat to everything else—because that means it really can replace everything in a manbag or purse but the phone—iPod, camera, notepad, gaming device, the list goes on. And it's everything that's great about the iPhone 4, but without the technological venereal disease that is a two-year AT&T contract. It's approachable, even to people who aren't super tech savvy—they can keep their simple, reliable phone on any carrier and use the iPod touch right along with it. That's a killer gadget.

Motorola DEFY is rugged Android candybar

Remeber the Motorola i1? Moto has just added its second rugged(ish) Android handset in the 3.7-inch Gorilla Glass-fronted Defy. It's dust-, scratch-, impact-, and water-resistant. Matching up to the IP67 durability spec means it's expected to resist being submersed in up to a meter of water for up to half an hour -- making it a pretty awesome option for taking your Android to the beach, 854 x 480 is your screen resolution, backed up by an OMAP 3610 chip running at 800MHz (there had to be some tradeoffs, right?). Android 2.1 is another slight disappointment, we're not clear on why Froyo had to be left off the table, but at least Motorola has bundled Swype as the default input mechanism. Should be a boon for some, we suppose. The Defy is expected to launch across Europe in Q4 2010.

Orange HD Voice service and handsets go live in the UK, we go ears-on (video)

Good news for UK mobile addicts: Orange's long-anticipated HD Voice service has officially made it to the Land of Hope and Glory. Starting today, British customers can pick up a HD Voice-enabled handset -- including the Nokia 5230, X6, E5 and Samsung Omnia Pro at launch -- from Orange, and start buttering their ears with "crystal clear" phone calls while within the carrier's 3G coverage. Prior to the launch, we were fortunate enough to try out the new service on a couple of Nokia E5 prototypes, and boy, that was some pretty impressive stuff there -- the wider speech bandwidth really added a lot of clarity to the caller's voice, and additionally, the noisy traffic from the caller's end was well suppressed at where it'd otherwise crackle over a normal call. Perhaps the easiest way to put it is that this is much like jumping from a bad FM radio broadcast to some sweet CD audio, thus making conversations a lot easier to interpret, even if the recipient is in a noisy environment or has hearing problem (as proven by Orange's public trial). As always, hearing is believing, so do check out our sample audio clips after the break.

While Orange remains a dominant driving force behind this mobile revolution, the carrier assured us that it expects other companies to pick up this open standard. That said, it's rather disappointing that current owners of the aforementioned handsets won't be getitng a software patch for the HD upgrade (we were told that no extra hardware is involved), but we can understand -- the manufacturers do need to sell new phones to stay alive in this rapidly changing market. Anyhow, here's hoping that the forthcoming flagship Android and Windows Phone 7 devices will also get a taste of this crystal clear call quality.

Motorola Milestone 2 arrives, 720p HD video, Android 2.2, and Motoblur Enhanced in tow

Even without yesterday's premature video promo, you had to know Motorola wouldn't leave its international audience without a successor to the Milestone, so today -- surprise, surprise -- we're being treated to the Milestone 2's launch. The first thing to be said here is that if you've handled a Droid 2, you've also handled a Milestone 2 -- the new phone follows Moto's tradition of being a simple rebadge away from the Verizon-friendly Droid naming scheme, which means it retains the same 1GHz OMAP SOC, 512MB of RAM, 5 megapixel camera, 8GB of integrated storage, and Android 2.2 as the default, albeit Motoblured, OS. Also, we got this straight from the Motohorse's mouth: Motoblur's not going anywhere, it's the company's "Android solution" and is here to stay.

One advantage over the Droid 2 here is the addition of 720p video recording. It's still the exact same imager as on the back of the first Milestone, but now you can catch moving visuals in HD resolution. Moto were keen to point out the 5-device hotspot capabilities (courtesy of Froyo) on the Milestone 2, but they showed it off using a wired connection since the demo handset's O2 SIM card wouldn't permit wireless tethering. Well, that was a grand demonstration of how vulnerable our Android 2.2 goodness will be to the whims of mobile carriers. The Milestone 2's expected to launch around Europe in Q4, with carrier-dependent pricing as per usual.

Linda Chung: “I Am the Lucky One”

Born in a middle-class family and loved by her parents and older siblings, Linda Chung Ka Yan grew up in a “greenhouse” and was especially protected by God. Due to her good grades during her school years, Linda was favored by her teachers. When Linda turned eighteen years-old, she entered the Miss Vancouver and Miss Chinese International Pageants with a care-free attitude. Signing with TVB, Linda was heavily promoted and did not experience any hiccups in her career. At twenty years-old, she became a lead actress in series. Quickly gaining popularity, she entered the music and film industries four years later. Linda’s ventures in television, music and film have all been successful.

Linda said gratefully, “Since childhood, everything in my life has gone smoothly. There has not been any tumult or great challenges. The biggest frustration was experienced at the start of my career, when I was living alone, without the care of my family. I was lonely due to the new, unfamiliar environment. Compared to other people’s situations, my experiences were not very frustrating in retrospect.”
Although Linda’s career has been smooth and she was quickly elevated to leading actress, she did not initially envision a long-term career in the entertainment industry. Linda’s original intention was to quickly earn enough money to allow her to retire early in Canada . Did Linda’s goal remain unchanged? “Haha! Several years ago, I thought this way. I wanted to only stay in the industry for two to three years. Gradually, I realized it was very difficult to withdraw from the industry. I grew to love this industry and the people I work with. Now, I can not give up my acting career without care. The good actresses in the field, such as Charmaine Sheh Si Man, Jessica Hsuan, Tavia Yang Yi, and Maggie Cheung Ho Yee invested over ten years to refine their skills, gain a strong footing, and establish their fadan status. This can not be accomplished within a short time. I need to invest a long time in order to acquire their acting achievements. Until then, I will not have the courage to refer to myself as a ‘fadan.’ A leading actress is not an automatic fadan. Currently, I am just a little, little, little fadan.”

Rumors Frightened Away Pursuers

Although Linda’s work schedule was busy and colorful, her love life was boring. Since her debut, Linda had romantic rumors with Raymond Lam Fung, Philip Ng Yun Long, Ekin Cheng, Steven Ma Chun Wai, and Johnny Tang Siu Chuen. Denying these rumors, what was Linda truly looking for in a partner? “My parents have urged me to date, but love can not be forced and worry about. The time will come when God is ready to grant you a boyfriend.”
Linda’s rumors with Raymond were the most persistent. Puzzled, Linda said, “I possess a quiet personality and do not understand why these type of rumors arise so frequently. Each time I film a series, I will be linked with my male co-stars. Since I will be filming with Ron Ng Cheuk Hei shortly, perhaps I will have rumors with him next! Although rumors can be used for promotion, they often frighten away genuine pursuers. Many people thought that my rumors with Raymond were real.”

Although her love life is currently empty, Linda’s ultimate goal is to get married and have a family. “For a woman, the most satisfying thing in life is to get married and have children. I am afraid of loneliness, so I will definitely get married and have children. When I grow old, there will be family to take care of me. In the past, I wanted to get married before turning thirty years-old. Now, I will let God make the arrangements.”

Shia LaBeouf tops Forbes list of Hollywood stars who give most bang for their buck

He may be a relative rookie when it comes to making movies, but Shia LaBeouf is clearly proving his worth to Hollywood.

The 24-year-old actor topped Forbes magazine's list of Hollywood's Best Actors For The Buck for the second year running.

Thanks to the success of movies like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($836 million worldwide box office) and the fourth Indiana Jones film ($787 million) LaBeouf is the star who brings in the most profit, based on the salary he is paid.

According to the magazine's own calculations, for every $1 the studios spent on the actor, his films return around $81 in profit.

The magazine speculates that LaBeouf is still not earning $20 million a picture unlike other top leading men in Tinseltown.

Hollywood women claimed five of the top ten spots this year with Anne Hathaway highest at number two.

She earned the studios around $64 per dollar, due to hits such as Alice in Wonderland, ($1 billion global box office) and low budget romantic comedy Bride Wars.

Third place went to Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, moving up one spot from last year, while Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr nabbed fourth.

Downey's new take on Sherlock Holmes brought in $517 million last Christmas, while Iron Man 2 has earned $622 million at the global box office.

Behind them, Cate Blanchett came in fifth, and Meryl Streep and Jennifer Aniston were tied in sixth place.

Johnny Depp was seventh, Nicolas Cage, eighth and Sarah Jessica Parker tenth.

The website calculated the results by looking at the 36 top earners in Hollywood.

Kim Kardashian Explains Why She's Not in Trouble Like Lindsay

Kim Kardashian is no wallflower, but she's not out there getting repeatedly arrested or anything, either.

When asked during her appearance on The Tonight Show Tuesday how she avoids trouble like, er, some other young celebrities out there, the E! star credited her lack of taste for alcohol and, of course, her fellow Kardashians.

Even if she did kinda throw Kourtney under the bus...

"Well, I've never really been a drinker," the multitasking celeb explained. "I've never gotten really—well, not really—I've never gotten into drugs. You know, I think I have such a close family..."

The audience finished her sentence for her with a round of applause.

"At a young age, you know, I think my sisters did enough drinking to kind of fill up the whole family," Kim added, "so I think from a young age, my dad made it very clear that, 'OK, you're the responsible one, you have to watch your sister.' (We're assuming she means Kourtney, considering Khloé would have been about 10.)

"And he taught me how to drive when I was 14 in case my sister or her friends were going to be drinking, and I had always had permission to drive, or else I had to call him from the destination to the final place...So I always felt this sense of pride that he had in me as the responsible one, so I've always wanted to make him proud.

"And," Kim added, "I hate the taste of alcohol."

"I did say that, at 30, I'm going to have a drink to lighten up because my sisters say I'm so boring," she continued. "So I tried a White Russian a few months ago...It tastes like chocolate milk, and it's kind of amazing."

HP unleashes Envy 17 3D, HP Envy 14 Beats edition and specially-cooled Pavilion dm3

We know, it feels like it was just a few months ago that the new Envy 14 and 17 hit the market, but HP isn't quite finished tinkering with its aluminum laptops. First up is the new Envy 14 Beats edition, which just like the previous Envy 15 Beats has a totally different black and red design than the rest of the Envy line along with a a pretty awesome red backlit keyboard. Apart from the different aesthetics and bundled Beats headphones, it's essentially the same as the regular Envy 14, although the $1249 starting price is for big fans of beats or Dr. Dre only. The Envy 17 gets the most interesting update, though: it'll be available sometimes this holiday season with a 17.3-inch 3D Ultra BrightView display and active shutter glasses. Powered by AMD's 3D technology, the Envy 17 will also support 3D Blu-ray discs, and by that we mean Avatar when it finally hits in November. We got a chance to check it out a few weeks ago and the 3D content looked pretty, well... three-dimensional. HP says the rig will be priced south of $2,000 and claims it's been working very hard on improving viewing angles.

On the much-more-thin-and-light end of the spectrum, HP's also unveiling the improved Pavilion dm3. Starting at $549, the 13.3-inch dm3 will be available with Intel Core i3 and i5 processors and boasts HP's new CoolSense technology, which the company says combines hardware and software to keep the entire chassis cool. Beyond all that, the laptop is less than an inch thick and has been given a major makeover -- it has a very soft-to-the-touch lid and the same chiclet keyboard and ClickPad as the Pavilion dm4. We're planning to review a few of these, but until then head below to check out some hands-on shots

Playful Kiss teases with a kissing scene photo

The first episode is literally around the corner as Playful Kiss will be airing in Korea tonight.

Before the first episode airs, the drama decided to do really last minute teasing. It looks like Kim Hyun Joong’s character and Jung So Min’s character have a kiss scene in the first episode. The two characters spend a night together after meeting for the first time on the show.

There is also some ballet dancing on the show which will be entertaining since we don’t get to see Kim Hyun Joong doing those type of moves on stage.

I must say, the kiss scene looks so lame.
