Brits 2010: Girl power as Lily Allen, Pixie Lott, Florence and the Machine and Lady Gaga go head to head

They are so often dominated by macho rock ’n’ roll stars. But the Brit Awards this year promise to be a much more girlie affair.

In the nominations, announced on Monday, Lily Allen, Pixie Lott, Florence and the Machine and America’s Lady Gaga are leading the way with three nods each.

Miss Allen is nominated for Best British Female Solo Artist, Best British Single for The Fear and Best British Album for It’s Not Me, It’s You.

The 24-year-old has already announced her plans to retreat from the industry and set up home in the Cotswolds with building manager Sam Cooper.

She appears to be passing the pop princess mantle on to Miss Lott – real name Victoria – who has become a big star in the past 12 months.

The 19-year-old blonde, from Brentwood, Essex, has already scored two No1 singles with Mama Do and Boys and Girls.

She is nominated for Best British Female, Best British Breakthrough Act and Best British Single for Mama Do.

Florence and the Machine is Florence Welch from London and her backing band.

She released her debut album Lungs last summer but it is No 1 in the charts this week, having never left the Top 40.

Miss Welch, 23, will do battle with both Miss Allen and Miss Lott in the Best British Female category and will also vie with Miss Lott to be Best British Breakthrough Act. She is also nominated alongside Miss Allen for Best British Album.

In this category, they are up against rapper Dizzee Rascal, rockers Kasabian and Scottish singer Paolo Nutini.

The quartet of girl stars is rounded off with Lady Gaga, 23, who is short-listed for Best International Female Solo Artist, Best International Breakthrough Act and Best International Album.

One lady who did miss out is Susan Boyle. As revealed by the Daily Mail, the Britain’s Got Talent runner-up failed to score a nomination despite having the biggest-selling album of 2009 with I Dreamed A Dream.

X Factor stars JLS also proved that they are pop favourites being nominated for Best British Breakthrough Act, Best British Group and Best British Single for their catchy Beat Again.

It was also tonight announced that Lady Gaga is one of the acts due to perform at the awards on February 16.

Other acts confirmed to perform include Robbie Williams – who will receive the Outstanding Contribution To Music gong – rock act Kasabian, JLS and Dizzee Rascal, who will perform a duet with Florence and the Machine.
