American Idol: Inside the Top 9’s Rehearsals

After a solid week of tunes from the songbook of Lennon/McCartney, American Idol’s top 9 got a chance to work with Idol alum Adam Lambert for a fresh series of performances this week. Without revealing song or theme, here is a tease as to what to expect when the contestants hit the stage Tuesday night. –- Cynthia Wang

CASEY JAMES: Don’t be fooled by the acoustic guitar — James has a rollicking number planned. He practices positioned on an isolated round platform that will be surrounded by standing, swaying audience members during the show.

SIOBHAN MAGNUS: Her rehearsal attire stands in contrast to her performance frocks –- she is rocking an Eraserhead T-shirt and ripped jeans. Her second run-through finds her with dead-on vocals but will the judges say the arrangement is contemporary or cabaret? She rehearses at center stage for the first two times and then in her third run-through, she sings while walking down the center stairs on the stage. In the fourth go, she is back center stage and seems a lot more comfortable.

ANDREW GARCIA: He has no instrument! Garcia tries several possible plans of attack, from singing center stage to moving behind the judges’ seats once more. He then practices the sing-and-walk, the knee bend, and other modest dance steps.

CRYSTAL BOWERSOX: Her instrument of choice this week is the electric guitar and she’s singing an up-tempo, holy roller number. Among all the contestants, she is the most vocal at the band performing above her, trying different ways to pace or end the song.

LEE DEWYZE has opted to forgo the bagpipes. He hopes not to forgo the lyrics of his song, either — DeWyze stops and starts when he messes up on the words and spins around with a smirk. As he does take after take, the song seems to get heavier and grungier.

TIM URBAN noodles on the guitar for a while before rehearsing, yet when he begins his mostly acoustic number, he seems to turn in a sweet, low-key performance. He eventually winds up sitting behind the judges’ table with a cello accompaniment.

MICHAEL LYNCHE: Also with an acoustic guitar, he performs an altered arrangement of a song and treats it as a folk ballad while sitting at the edge of the center stage.

AARON KELLY: He’s decided he has had enough of mild and somber and rocks out in his rehearsal, coming down from the stage to the judge’s table. He does a bit of dance and shuffle and really moves around the studio. And Kelly shows off some grit in his voice!

KATIE STEVENS: Appearing like a reincarnation of Katharine McPhee in rehearsal, Stevens belts out an upbeat, big number which, dare we say, sounds country-bluesy? Oh, that doesn’t help the Simon/Kara debate one bit!
