'Halo: Reach' Hits Stores Sept. 14

"Halo: Reach" for the Xbox 360 will be released on September 14 worldwide, except for users in Japan, who will have to wait one more day for a September 15 release, Microsoft said Monday.

The news comes after a successful two-week beta testing period that saw 2.7 million "Halo" fans sign up to play. Players logged more than 16 million hours of online gameplay, which equals 1,826 years, and played more than 13 million online games.

The "Halo: Reach" beta, whick kicked off on May 3, was open to Xbox Live Gold account members who had the "Halo 3: ODST" campaign disc, and 1.2 G-bytes of free hard drive space.

Data and user feedback collected from the beta will be used by Microsoft and game developer Bungie to refine the game before its September release, Microsoft said.

"'Halo: Reach' is the culmination of a decade of 'Halo,' a franchise that has become a global entertainment and pop-culture touchstone," Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, said in a statement. "Just as 'Halo: Combat Evolved' catalyzed the success of the original Xbox to define a decade of entertainment, 'Halo: Reach' will push the boundaries for what's possible in video games and help make 2010 the biggest year in Xbox history."

Bob McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop, said pre-orders for the game "have been off the charts."

The standard edition of "Halo: Reach" will retail for $59.99, while limited and legendary editions will sell for $79.99 and $149.99, respectively. The legendary version includes a 10-inch, hand-painted statue of the Noble Team, the Spartan soldiers featured in the game.

North American fans who purchase the game in-store on launch day will receive a token that unlocks an exclusive in-game Spartan Recon helmet. Those outside North America can make a pre-order reservation at participating stores.
