'Iron Man 2' solid on Friday with $51 Mil

It’s not looking like a record-breaker but Iron Man 2 is still destined for a pretty fantastic weekend. Early reports indicate the Robert Downey Jr.-starrer pulled in over $51 million Friday in its 4,380 locations. (That includes the $7.5 million earned from its midnight shows.) The number far surpasses the $38 million earned on Iron Man’s opening day two years ago, but falls beneath The Dark Knight which opened to $67 million, also in 2008. Even though Paramount Pictures released the movie, Iron Man 2 marks the first film to be released from Marvel Entertainment since Disney purchased the comic book company at the beginning of the year. And audiences love it: The movie has so far earned an A from Cinemascore, meaning it should hold in well for some time.

As for the rest of the top five, the steep drops we predicted are coming true. Nightmare on Elm Street fell a staggering 79% since last Friday night with an over $3 million day, which puts it in place for a weekend take of under $10 million. How to Train Your Dragon is likely to take its greatest fall since opening seven weeks ago. Earning less around $1.5 million on Friday, the movie is likely to fall around 40% for the weekend to something around $6.5 million but will still crack $200 million. Date Night is still holding in decently, grossing an estimated $1.5 million Friday, the film should fall another 31% for the weekend, putting its total gross over $80 million. The fifth spot will go to The Back-Up Plan which is likely to fall another 37% for the weekend. The film earned an estimated $1.4 million on Friday and should near $30 million by the end of the weekend.
