The nominees for the 21st Golden Melody Awards will be revealed on May 14th. From information released from news archives, there were a total of 359 albums that applied. In all, there was 10,468 music pieces in consideration. Compared to past years, this year’s applicants reached a record high.In the previous weeks before nominees are announced, Taiwan’s acclaimed music website PMW held online polls to predict this year’s nominees. At one point, the website was overrun with fans and had to shut down. Currently, the total amount of votes is around 200,000. This number shows that many fans are looking forward to this year’s GMAs.
This year, the most competitive category would be [Best Mandarin Male Singer]. Male singers garnered the largest amount of total votes. Jam Hsiao was in the lead with more than 20,000 votes compared to the other male choices. The top 10 male singers include Wilber Pan, Yoga Lin, JJ Lin, Eason Chan, Khalil Fong, TANK, Shin and Crowd Lu.
As for the female singers who released their albums this year, all have proven their capabilities. The top 10 female singers that netizens chose include Valen Hsu, Coco Lee, Jolin Tsai, Angela Zhang, Elva Hsiao, A-mei, Fish Leong, Evonne Hsu, and Ding Dang.
A-mei has confidently emerged from her newest album as a newcomer: AMIT. The two long-time-no-see “Heavenly Queens” of Mandopop Coco Lee and Valen Hsu also seem to be going strong. Popular artistes Jolin Tsai, Elva Hsiao, Fish Leong, and Angela Zhang look to be the “dark horses” of 2010.
The [Best Newcomer] category is also a category that many fans are excited for. The top 10 vote-getters include already well-known artistes such as One Million Star’s Peter Pan and Lala Hsu, Super Idol’s Jing Chang, songwriters Blue Ji, Jeremy Liu etc.
Poll results show that Jing Chang was ahead by 10,000 votes compared to the rest of the newcomers. The Top 10 newcomers include Jing Chang, Peter Pan, Blue Ji, Lala Hsu, Jeremy Liu, Shadya Lan, COLOR, R.Chord, Nylon Chen and Cindy Yen.
Once the nominees for the 21st Golden Melody Awards are revealed on 5/14, the awards ceremony will be held at Taipei Arena on 6/26. The hosts will be Xiao S and Harlem Yu.
