HTC EVO 4G loaded with Froyo; shows up at HTC’s USA online store

Although Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G will run Android 2.1 at launch, an Android 2.2 Froyo update is certainly coming later this year.

Google has made the Froyo SDK available, and also provided free EVOs to all attendees of its I/O conference – this explains why a user over at the XDA forums has already managed to root his HTC EVO 4G, which now runs Android 2.2. Unfortunately, the root has not been provided as a download yet (there’s still work to make it stable), but you can follow this thread (via Engadget) to see when you can get it.

Meanwhile, a video showing the EVO 4G running Froyo can be watched below:

The HTC EVO 4G will be available for purchase starting June 4 (this Friday). Following Sprint and other retailers, HTC has now added the smartphone to its USA online store, too.

Customers will be able to buy the EVO directly from HTC for: $199.99 with a new 2-yr Sprint contract agreement (no mail-in rebate); $299.99 with an existing contract extension; $549.99 free of contract. Happy pre-ordering!
