HTC hopes to be done with Android 2.2 Froyo updates before Christmas

We all know that HTC will update its 2010 smartphones to Android 2.2 Froyo, but “when exactly?” is a question that still has no answer.

We’ve heard that the HTC Desire could get Froyo in August, but other smartphones (like the Legend, Wildfire, Incredible and Evo 4G) might not be that lucky.

Eric Lin, global PR and online community manager at HTC, told Pocket-lint that he believes the company “would be done with Froyo updates before Christmas.”

That’s not really good news, and I’m already thinking that owners of the Legend or the Wildfire (which are not high-end devices) might have to wait for Froyo the longest (i.e. until the last month of the year).

Lin explains why updates take so long, and its explanation is reasonable:

“It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it’s running on our hardware as well as we expect”.

The HTC official also said that Android Gingerbread could come out in the first quarter of 2011. He might know more than we know, so let’s assume he’s right. If so, we’ll probably see new handsets running Gingerbread sometime in the second quarter of next year, while older handsets (that currently wait for Froyo) will probably get the new version of Android even later. That’s the price to pay when you have lots of (very different) manufacturers that build hardware for a single platform – the sad thing is that this price is not paid by Google, but by users, who sometimes (or most of the time?) have to wait for updates more than they’d want.
