T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S to be launched on July 15? & more

When T-Mobile USA announced the Samsung Vibrant (its own version of the Galaxy S), it said that the smartphone would be available starting July 21.

However, the carrier might have changed its mind since then, and now it appears it wants to launch the Vibrant earlier, on July 15 – that’s the same day when Verizon will start selling the Motorola Droid X.

This image below seems to confirm the July 15 launch date, although we can’t be sure of its authenticity yet.

The Samsung Vibrant will cost $199.99 on contract. T-Mobile’s users should hope the handset will indeed be launched earlier than promised, because this is likely the best smartphone they’ve ever had the chance to get.

Sprint’s Samsung Intercept to launch July 11, $99 on contract

The rumored Samsung Intercept for Sprint is now official. It will launch on July 11, will cost you $99 after a $100 mail-in rebate for new 2-year contracts or eligible upgrades.

Sprint didn’t bother to attach a full spec sheet to the press release, so here’s a list of the specs we know of right now:
  • Android 2.1
  • 3.2″ touchscreen
  • slide-out QWERTY keyboard
  • 3.2 Megapixel camera
  • 3G (EVDO Rev.0)
  • WiFi
  • stereo Bluetooth
  • accelerometer
  • GPS
  • microSD card slot
  • available in two colors: Gray Steel and Satin Pink

This is the Samsung Moment‘s successor, though you’d be hard pressed to find any major difference in specs between the two, at least at this point. We’ll have to wait on a more complete spec list and see. You’ve got a few more days to get ready to buy this thing, and at that price it’s one of the more interesting midrange Android-based offerings for sure.

Vodafone clears up the specs of the Samsung 360 H2

The LiMo-based Samsung 360 H2 is exclusively created for Vodafone and integrates their ’360 experience’. It has been known to be in development for quite a while, and many different supposed specs have been leaked or rumored during the past few months.

Vodafone finally decided to step in and make some things clear about this upcoming successor to the H1.

It will have:
  • 3.7″ multi-touch Super AMOLED WVGA (800 x 480) screen
  • 8 Megapixel camera with image stabilizer (I can’t see how it’s going to be optical in a phone’s size, so digital it is!), LED flash and 720p video recording
  • the same processor found in the Samsung Galaxy S (Samsung’s very own S5PC111), clocked at 1GHz
  • Qualcomm MSM6290 baseband, enabling HSDPA at 7.2 Mb/s and HSUPA at 5.76 Mb/s and quadband GSM
  • WiFi 802.11 n
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 16 GB internal memory, expandable via microSD card slot
  • Sensors: Geo-magnetic, accelerometer, proximity, light
  • H.263, H.264, MPEG4, DivX, WMV and AC3 support
  • Opera 10 browser with Flash, Webkit Widget Engine and Java
  • Multitasking support
  • Dimensions: 125 x 60.8 x 11.7 mm
  • Weight: 137g

A Linux3 Developer SDK is also available for creating native LiMo apps, if any developers are up for that.

And it looks nice enough. Here’s a brief demo video:

It seems to be a bit of an improvement compared to its soon-to-be predecessor, but what will no doubt make or break this phone is the software. Whether or not the 360 user experience based on LiMo has grown up enough and how people will react to it and interact with it remains to be seen. I wouldn’t necessarily do any sort of comparison between this and the iPhones and Androids of the world, but it may make for a very good device for someone coming from a featurephone.

Time (and Vodafone’s pricing, for sure) will tell.

Samsung Galaxy Naos and Galaxy Teos: Android 2.1 successors to the i5700 Galaxy Spica in France

Two identically-specced but differently styled versions of the Samsung i5800 just popped up in France.

They both feature:
  • Android 2.1 with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface
  • a 667 MHz processor
  • 3.2″ WQVGA 240 x 400 capacitive touchscreen
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • HSDPA
  • microSD card slot
  • 3 Megapixel camera
  • aGPS
  • 1500 mAh battery

The Galaxy Naos is headed to Orange France in black or white and it can be yours for just 1 euro on selected contracts.

Its dimensions are 113.5 x 55 x 12.4 mm and it weighs 105g.

The Galaxy Teos is headed to other operators and looks exactly like a Samsung i5800. Hence, its dimensions should be a bit different from those of the Naos, namely 113.5 x 55 x 12.8 and its weight 109.7g. As you can see, this is also a “with Google” phone:

A quick scan of the features reveals, as with the original i5800, that while being touted by Samsung as successors to the i5700 Galaxy Spica/Portal/Lite, these phones feature some spec downgrades compared to it.

The display’s resolution is 240 x 400, compared to the Spica’s 320 x 480. It is true though that this new resolution makes these phones less wide than the Spica, and this might translate into easier one-handed use.

Also, the processor is just 667 MHz compared to the Spica’s 800 MHz. Which may not matter at all, given what poor performing drivers Samsung had for the i5700.

Anyway, the i5800 family has now added two more members to its existing two (the i5800 and i5801 Galaxy Apollo for Orange UK), and all of these should be best sellers, judging from the amount of features offered for their prices.
