'Social Network': Friday audiences Like it enough to make it No. 1 at box office

With more than $8 million earnings on Friday night, The Social Network is destined for a first place finish at the weekend box office. How much it earns by Sunday night is still an open question, with estimates ranging from $21 million to $27 million. Even if the result is at the low end of that spread, Social Network will win the weekend easily. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, The Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga’Hoole, and The Town all have a shot at $10 million for the weekend, with each earning around $3 million on Friday night.Easy A is likely to grab the last spot in the top five in its third weekend, taking in more than $2 million on Friday night; its three-day take should be around $8 million. The weekend’s two new horror releases, Let Me In and Case 39, are not likely to generate much income. Both grossed less than $2 million Friday night, and are unlikely to earn much more than $5 million for the weekend. Come back tomorrow for a full report.
