'Call of Duty: Black Ops' rakes in $360M on first day

We have a new "biggest entertainment launch in history," according to Activision.

The video game publisher estimates the first-person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops pulled in $360 million on its opening day in North America and the U.K.

Activision says 5.6 million copies of the highly-anticipated action game were sold. By comparison, last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 -- the previous "biggest entertainment launch in history" -- pulled in $310 million on launch day and sold 4.7 million copies.

"There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year's five-day global sales record of $550 million," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement.

And get ready for a lot more Call of Duty in the future. Another title is in the works for 2011, and there are reports Activision is considering a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on the universe.
