Steve Jobs: No Upgrade for iPhone 2G

Now that the iPad is out and iPhone OS 4 has been announced, it looks like Steve Jobs is taking a little time to catch up on his email -- in addition to taking up the new SDK rules, it appears he's very tersely confirmed what we sadly suspected all along: the first-gen iPhone won't get an upgrade to iPhone OS 4. That makes a certain amount of sense, given that Apple's subscription accounting model for the original iPhone only booked free upgrades for 24 months, but really, that's just paperwork -- we don't see why Cupertino couldn't at least allow for an iPod touch-style paid upgrade, especially since the upgradeable iPhone 3G runs essentially the same hardware. And let's not forget that first-gen iPhone owners paid more or less full price for their devices, so if this is true, Apple's summarily dead-ended a $400 phone just under three years after it launched. Of course, none of this is officially confirmed yet, so anything can change -- we've pinged Apple for comment and they haven't responded yet, but we'll let you know what we find out.

WePad Android tablet detailed: €449 from July

Remember the WePad? Another Android-based assault on the iPad, the touchscreen slate is getting its official launch today in Germany, including hardware specs [pdf link] and pricing. Kicking off at €449 ($611), the WePad has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor paired with 16GB of flash storage, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 and a 1.3-megapixel camera; a €569 ($774) version will add in 3G and have 32GB of storage.

Both models pack an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 touchscreen, two USB 2.0 ports, Flash and Adobe AIR support and a LiIon battery good for up to 6hrs. There’s also optional GPS, a memory card reader, ambient light sensor, accelerometer and stereo speakers, plus an audio output. The project is a collaboration between 4titoo and Neofonie, with Siemens, Intel and Adobe as partners, and the WePad is apparently capable of Full HD 1080p playback (likely with some sort of integral Broadcom HD decoder).

Jay Chou to surpass 4D in next concert

Coming back into the music scene, Jay Chou will be performing at the Taipei Arena on July 11th and 12th. To him, being able to create music with multiple types of instruments isn't a rarity, it's the package of the whole stage that makes it cool. Many singers have called upon 3D special effects for their stage, to this, Jay says, "(I) have already played with 4D at the press conference, certainly this time has be even more special." Therefore, he will be utilizing the newly introduced "360 degrees 3D suspension in air" that costs more than NT$40,000,000. The high production costs for this concert are reflected on the ticket prices that will be ranging from NT$800 to NT$5500. But fans will be able to experience a mind-blowing effect.

All the visuals are designed with a science and technology style -- a completely futuristic feel. The audience will see a stage that has the appearance of a spaceship, which will blend with the elements of "decadent rock and roll" and "Chinese medieval century" to come together to form an intense contrast. In May, he will be releasing his 10th album. With the accumulation of so many years of creations, even Director Chou openly said, "There are too many songs. When (I) choose songs, it's very troublesome. However, (I) guarantee that they will all be songs that everyone likes."

Opera Got 100 Million Users (Half On Mobile)

Browser maker Opera Software is announcing a milestone today: 100 million people are now using Opera’s browsers. Interestingly, half of the audience are using the mobile version of Opera’s Browser, Opera Mini. As of March 2010, 50 million unique active users were browsing on Opera’s desktop offering on Windows, Mac and Linux computers and 50 million people were using Opera’s mobile browser. And out of the 100 million users, there’s not a single user that uses both desktop and mobile browser from Opera.

While user growth of Opera’s desktop offering has increased over 30 percent from last year, Opera Mini is growing much faster in terms of usage. In February, Opera Mini saw a 145 percent increase in users from the previous year. And Opera Mini’s growth is steady. Each month, the conclusion is always the same: mobile web usage around the world keeps on growing and growing. Clearly, the most significant growth is taking place in Opera’s mobile offering.

But it’s always a positive sign when a browser company is seeing an increase of usage in both of its products. Earlier this year, Opera saw a spike in downloads of its latest desktop browser (10.5) after Microsoft started offering Windows users in Europe a choice in browser with a so-called ballot screen. And Opera just submitted an application for an Opera Mini app for the iPhone, which it claims is up to 6 times faster than the native browser thanks to its compression and server-side rendering technology. It’s unclear if the app will be approved.

Meizu Mbook 1080p-capable iPad rival detailed

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Meizu but it seems the company has been watching Apple’s iPad and planning their alternative. The Meizu Mbook is an 8.4-inch touchscreen slate running at 1024 x 768, with an unnamed 1.5GHz processor capable of 1080p output via an HDMI port.

There’s also integrated WiFi, 3G and GPS, and the touchscreen uses – like the iPad – a capacitive layer rather than resistive. The whole thing is expected to measure 210 x 140 x 14 mm, and the battery tipped to last for up to 12 hours use.

TEGW3000 borrows Nexus One style & iPhone UI

Gasp at the unrelenting beauty of a knock-off Nexus One cellphone with a carefully cloned iPhone UI: yes, friends, as though Apple and Google had got up close and personal on Spring Break, it’s the TEGW3000. The Nexus One inspired casing is actually a little more pocketable than the original, thanks to it using a smaller 3.2-inch 320 x 480 touchscreen, though you’ll also have to make do without 3G.

Still, there are still dual SIM card slots, along with WiFi and both front & rear cameras (though the main one is just 2-megapixels), plus an analog TV tuner. While there’s no talk of what chipset the phone is based on, we’re guessing it’s not using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon.

TVXQ is Platinum once again

Last Month, the RIAJ (Recording Industry Association of Japan) awarded the boys with Double Platinum for their Best Selection 2010 album. Now the boys have achieved Platinum once again with their newest single Toki Wo Tomete which was released on March 24.

Steve Carell, Tina Fey Star in Smash of the Titans

That was one mighty Date Night.

The Steve Carell-Tina Fey comedy rose up against Clash of the Titans to open No. 1 at the weekend box office, per estimates, with $27.1 million.

As things stand now, Titans is an extremely close second, with $26.9 million. But even if Monday's final numbers show the 3D epic on top, it's unlikely they'll show the film doing anything but dropping like a rock in just its second weekend.

Elsewhere, Miley Cyrus is looking more and more money, while Kristen Stewart's The Runaways is looking more and more like it'll have to wait 'til Netflix to find an audience. More results:
