HP Windows 7 Slate Lives?

HP is continuing to promote a Windows 7-based slate PC on its Web site, raising questions about the accuracy of reports that the project's been shelved.

Promotional videos featuring the tablet in action still appear on Hewlett-Packard's Web site.

"A big bonus for the slate product is that, being based off Windows 7, it offers full Adobe support," said Phil McKinney, VP and chief technology officer for HP's Personal Systems Group, in a blog post touting the device.

The post, dated March 8, is admittedly almost two months old. But it's questionable whether HP would leave the blog entry, which includes an accompanying video showing the device in action, online if a final decision had been made to kill the slate.

Citing an anonymous source, bloggers at TechCrunch last week reported that HP has decided to strip Windows 7 from its slate product—possibly due to concerns over battery life. Other observers have noted that HP's plan to buyout Palm for $1.2 billion means the company may look to Palm's WebOS as a platform for mobile computing.

But an HP spokesperson on Monday dismissed the reports as "rumors and speculation."

An HP move away from Windows 7 for its slate could also leave it without the Adobe Flash support McKinney boasted about in his blog post. Flash, which is used by the majority of Web sites for graphics and animation, is not fully supported on Android or WebOS, though Adobe has said it plans to have that support in place this year.

McKinney's video of the HP tablet in action shows a user navigating his way around the device through a series of simple hand gestures that presumably leverage Windows 7's built-in support for touch screens.

It also shows it being used as a video player, an e-reader, and as a navigational tool.

Reports have suggested that HP originally intended to ship the product in early- or mid-September, during the back to school season, at a price between $500 and $600.
