Glee stars get glamorous makeover for the cover of Emmy magazine as series one comes to an emotional end

They may be waiting with baited breath for that all-important Emmy nod but this might be the biggest clue yet that Glee is set to sweep the board.

The main cast members of the all-singing, all-dancing show have been honoured with gracing the cover of the award's official magazine this month.

And being the largest issue in the publication’s 31-year history, it could be a sure-fire sign that Glee's trophy cabinet is about to get bigger.

It is also the magazine's most coveted issue of the year as it precedes those all-important Emmy nominations, which will be announced on July 8.

Early predictions suggest Glee is a shoo-in to not only be nominated for but to also walk away with the gong for Outstanding Comedy Series, among others.

The show's stars such as Jane Lynch, Lea Michele and Matthew Morrisson, ditched the rehearsal room for the photographic studio and were given a glamorous make-over for the cover.

And inside, on the many pages dedicated to the stars of the fictional William McKinley High School, the actors share their thoughts about their characters, their meteoric rise to fame and how the show has changed their lives.

Jane Lynch plays Sue Sylvester, the misanthropist, bitter and angry leader of the Cheerios cheerleaders, whose killer one-liners and put-downs have made her one of the show's most popular characters.

And she said she based Sue on one of her acting teachers at university.

She said: 'There’s a real person beneath the bravado who wants to be accepted and loved although she would never show that. In her narcissistic view of the world, everything’s about one-upping and victory.

'I had an acting teacher in college we called the Dragon Lady. She taught through shame and humiliation, and when she walked down the hall, people would part like the Red Sea.'

Lea Michele, who stars as the highly-ambitious and utterly annoying Rachel Berry, the star of the Glee club, said she knew that she wanted the role because of the instant connection to the character.

Michele, who made Fox executives cry when she auditioned, said: 'The minute I read Rachel Berry, I felt such a connection to her.

'Her drive and passion for singing and performing – that’s my therapy in life. It helps me learn who I am. Rachel’s on that same journey.'

Corey Montieth, who plays Finn Hudson, the school's quaterback, Glee's leading male and Rachel's on-off love-interest, said being in Glee is a far cry from his previous job as a secret shopper in Vancouver in his home country of Canada.

He said: 'I’d drive around in my Honda Civic visiting 7-Elevens. I’d pretend I was looking for a certain product, quiz the clerks and, depending on their performance, reward them with cash prizes. It wasn’t a bad way to earn a paycheck.'

His castmate Chris Colfer, who stars as flamboyant gay Glee member Kurt Hummel, said his biggest achievement in the show so far was taking off Beyonce and the dance routine for Single Ladies.

He said: 'Being told to dance one of the most iconic dances in pop-culture when you can barely tap your shoes? Yes I was proud of myself.'

But fame almost wasn't meant to be for Amber Riley who plays Mercedes Jones, after she was turned away from American Idol.

But she holds no bitterness towards Simon Cowell and the other judges and said: 'I don’t have anything to say to the judges. I let my work speak for itself.'

The show's creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy said he thinks Glee is a success because it is a celebration of the underdog in us all.

He added: 'The message is about inclusion. The show’s about having a voice, and singing loud and proud. It’s about the power of possibility.'

The first season finale aired in the US on Tuesday night, and will be broadcast on E4 next Monday at 9pm.
