Motorola Droid sales still strong; 4 video-calling capable phones may come this year

Launched by Verizon in November last year, the Motorola Droid is still one of the carrier’s best-selling smartphones, even though the newer HTC Droid Incredible has also been launched not long ago.

According to Reuters, Motorola’s CEO Sanjay Jha recently declared that “Droid sales are going extremely well.” However, it seems that Motorola can’t produce as many Droids as it would want, because it’s facing component shortages – just like HTC with its Droid Incredible.

Discussing about what’s next in Moto’s phone line-up, Sanjay Jha said that two to four new phones with front-facing cameras for video calling will be out this year. Two of these phones might be the Motorola Shadow / Xtreme and the Motorola Droid 2 – although the leaked photos showing the handsets don’t confirm the existence of video-calling cameras.

Video-calling is not exactly popular in the US, but with the iPhone 4 and HTC EVO 4G supporting the feature, it might become a standard for all future smartphones.

Verizon currently sells the Motorola Droid for $199.99 on contract. The upcoming Droids will likely have similar prices.
