Ahoy me hearties! Pirates of the Caribbean crew swap the high seas for the River Thames as Johnny Depp films in London

The presence of a Hollywood heartthrob on home turf is always going to be cause for excitement.

But even more so when dear old England is going to play a major role in his next movie.

Johnny Depp, reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, is currently filming scenes for Pirates Of The Carribean: On Stranger Tides in Greenwich's Old Royal Naval College.

The area surrounding the college has undergone a transformation to create a realistic backdrop of London as it was 350 years ago.

Streets have been covered with gravel and sand, and modern buildings have either been covered with blue screens - to overlay special effects on to later - or had wooden structures built around them.

In new action scenes, Depp, 47, is seen leaping from a third floor building to try and escape the English Guard.

And during a shooting break the A-lister was seen mingling with extras trussed up in costume, as well as crew members in contemporary dress.

The fourth installment of the Pirates series is due for release next May.

Castmates have already shot scenes in Los Angeles, Hawaii and Puerto Rico and will be filming in London for six weeks.

Penelope Cruz has joined the cast, but Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and Mackenzie Crook will not reprise their roles from earlier movies.

On Tuesday Depp emerged from the make up trailer sporting tight braids.

His naturally longer hair was plaited in this way so his Captain Sparrow wig - which consists of thick matted dreadlocks - will fit securely and flush against his scalp without having to cut off his own hair.
