'I don't like being the centre of attention,' says shy girl Jessica Alba as she poses for stunning photoshoot

For someone who's been a successful actress since her teens, Jessica Alba isn't the type of person you'd describe as shy and retiring.

But the actress insists she hates being the centre of attention as she poses in a stunning new photoshoot.

More happy to leave the leading roles to her contemporaries, the 29-year-old is hoping to prove her comedy chops in the latest Meet The Parents sequel Little Fockers.

She tells the new issue of America's Elle magazine: 'I'm shy. I don't like being the centre of attention. But when I do comedy, I lose all inhibition and introspection. I no longer care.'

Over the past two years, a majority of Alba's film roles have been supporting.

Although she filmed the lead in An Invisible Sign Of My Own two years ago - which is yet to secure a release date - she has also had supporting roles in Machete, The Killer Inside Me and Valentine's Day.

She cited becoming a mother to two-year-old Honor of influencing her choice of roles.

She said: 'The time I'm not spending with my kid has to be worth it, so when I sat down with my agents after I was ready to go back to work, I told them: It's all about the directors.

'Now I prefer I'm not the lead. it's a totally different approach - way better.'

Alba acknowledged that some of her films haven't always been good following roles in flops Good Luck Chuck and The Love Guru and receiving three Worst Actress nominations at the Razzies (the anti-Oscars).

She explained: 'I know I haven't been swimming in the deep end with some of the movies I've done. I wasn't trying to. I knew what they were.

The Sin City star has also become more laid back with her attitude to criticism after taking it very personally earlier on in her career.

She said: 'I'd been so afraid of criticism ever since I was young. Every time I'd get a critique or some redirection, I'd always just take it very personally, but now I have no problem with it. It's just a chance to try things a different way.'

Meanwhile, Alba has revealed she didn't go nude in her latest film Machete after her underwear was digitally removed during a shower scene.

Fans were initially surprised because Alba has always insisted her Catholic upbringing meant she would never bare all on screen.

However, her spokesman said: 'Jessica has been steadfast in her resolve not to appear nude in films from the beginning of her career.

'The decision to digitally remove the underwear from the shower scene in Machete was one she and Robert Rodriguez (director) made together, which would serve his vision for the film, as well as honour her personal convictions regarding nudity.'
