iPad Got 0.03 Percent of All Web Traffic

The iPad's presence on the Web—or at least certain parts of it—is already rivaling that of much more prevalent devices. According to initial data from Web metrics firm NetApplications (via IDG), Apple's tablet device has averaged about 0.03 percent of all Web traffic per day in the first 10 days after launch, nearly matching the March numbers for the BlackBerry and catching up quickly to other mobile devices.

The iPad's Web share grew steadily from April 3 until the weekend following the launch, April 10 and 11. At that time, the number peaked at 0.04 percent both days before settling back down as users went back to work. Comparatively, NetApplications recorded an average of 0.04 percent for BlackBerry devices over the month of March, while all versions of Android together came in at 0.07 percent, as did Windows Mobile.

NetApplications does not necessarily give numbers that represent the entire Web—instead, the company measures its data by analyzing logs on its member sites, only taking a snapshot of certain parts of the Internet. Still, the percentages themselves matter less than how they compare to one another. The iPad is distinctively less mobile than a smartphone like the BlackBerry thanks to size, and does not currently have 3G wireless capabilities—that the two are neck-and-neck in Web share speaks to the iPad's appeal as a casual Web browsing machine. The massive number of BlackBerry users out there aren't doing much surfing, relatively speaking.

Other iPhone OS devices came in even higher during March—iPhone at 0.51 percent and iPod touch at 0.11 percent, respectively. It may be a while before the iPad reaches such high Web traffic, but it's not outside of the realm of possibility. The iPad's initial numbers could be credited to launch excitement, but the 3G version will launch later this month and the device will go international in May.
