Welcome Xmas: Weekend Box Office For Jim Carrey

Holiday movie season and high Oscar season have kicked off. But only one is kicking mistletoe.

While Jim Carrey's A Christmas Carol led a bah-humbug weekend with an underwhelming $31 million, per estimates, the Oprah Winfrey- and Tyler Perry-backed award-show contender Precious grossed a stunning $1.8 million at only 18 theaters.

Elsewhere, Michael Jackson's This Is It did its thing (solid $14 million here, bigger $29 million overseas), George Clooney's The Men Who Stare at Goats ($13.3 million) did better than expected for a movie with goats and George Clooney in it, and Cameron Diaz's The Box ($7.9 million) just didn't really open.

A look inside the numbers:

• It's not that it's bad to make $31 million in 72 hours, as A Christmas Carol is expected to do. It's just that it's not good to not make something closer to your $175 million-ish budget (especially when you're charging 3D-ticket prices).

• This time last year, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa started off the holiday season with a $63.1 million bang.

• Here's the good news for A Christmas Carol: One, holiday movies tend to keep well during holiday season; and, two, director Robert Zemeckis has experience at turning a sluggish start into a success story. In 2004, his pricey The Polar Express impressed nobody with a $23.3 million opening; the Tom Hanks film ended up avoiding disaster, and, given reissues and overseas receipts, grossing $305 million.

• Precious is not messing around. Not since Dreamgirls has a movie averaged at least $100,000 per theater (by comparison, A Christmas Carol averaged $8,417), and not since ever, Exhibitor Relations says, has a movie playing at more than 10 theaters averaged six figures.

• To put it another way, Precious grossed about as much at 18 theaters as The Stepfather ($1.9 million) did at 1,400-plus.

• For those keeping score, Jackson's concert film held up better in its second weekend than Miley Cyrus' did. Cyrus' Best of Both Worlds, however, remains the genre champ (for now) with a $65.3 million overall gross. This Is It currently stands at $57.9 million.

• Jackson continues to dominate Cyrus globally. Overall, Best of Both Worlds "only" made $5.4 million overseas; This Is It broke the $100 million mark on Thursday.

• George Clooney is a bona-fide movie star, but, outside of the Ocean's Eleven franchise, he's not exactly a box-office star. As modest as its debut was, the quirky The Men Who Stare at Goats opened bigger than all but seven of Clooney's 20-plus movies.

• With a reputed budget of $25 million, The Box isn't a bomb. But the thriller is Diaz's lowest-grossing wide-release opener since the prophetically titled Very Bad Things back in 1998.

• For one weekend, at least, Milla Jovovich's The Fourth Kind ($12.5 million) scared up more money than Paranormal Activity ($8.6 million; $97.4 million overall).

• Jigsaw has been cut down. Saw VI ($2 million) dropped out of the Top 10 after just two weekends. To date, the horror sequel has grossed $26.2 million. The previous "lowest"-grossing Saw, the 2004 original, took in $55.2 million.

• Missing again: Hilary Swank's $40 million Amelia ($1.8 million; $11.3 million overall, per Box Office Mojo) disappeared from the Top 10 after a one-weekend stay.

Here's a look at the weekend's top-grossing films based on Friday-Sunday estimates as compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

1. Disney's A Christmas Carol, $31 million
2. Michael Jackson's This Is It, $14 million
3. The Men Who Stare at Goats, $13.3 million
4. The Fourth Kind, $12.5 million
5. Paranormal Activity, $8.6 million
6. The Box, $7.9 million
7. Couples Retreat, $6.4 million
8. Law Abiding Citizen, $6.2 million
9. Where the Wild Things Are, $4.2 million
10. Astro Boy, $2.6 million

Indonesian media reported that Jay Chou had died from drugs overdose

Yesterday, Indonesian media reported that Jay Chou had died from drugs overdose, and this shocking news quickly spread fast. This isn't the first time Jay has been rumoured to have died. In early 2004, a large Chinese website allegedly reported that Jay had died from a car accident. The report was even very emphatic in describing how Jay was on his way back to his management company when a large truck suddenly collided with his car. Furthermore they reported that the driver of Jay's car had immediately died at the scene, and Jay and staff members were rushed to hospital, but it was already too late, and he was pronounced dead.

Yesterday, many people on Facebook were intensely discussing about how Indonesian meda reported that Jay had died from drugs overdose in a remote place, and this shocking news quickly spread fast. Reporters immediately contacted Jay's management company JVR and they expressed that this news is ridiculous. Jay is fine and is currently in America filming 'The Green Hornet', and warned the public not to believe these rumours.

A tearful Lindsay Lohan breaks down, as bitter family feud continues

Considering her latest drama, it's little wonder Lindsay Lohan looks emotional.

As her bitter family row was raging, she was pictured in an alley behind LA's fashionable Crow Bar on Friday night, talking on her mobile and crying.

The Mean Girls star - who looked super slender in leggings, a white dotted blouse, strappy stilettos, and a black jacket - still seemed on the verge of tears as she went back into the club.

But then, it's hardly surprising. Last week, she used networking site Twitter to claim her estranged father Michael Senior had threatened to kill her mother Deanna if she ever left him.

'She blames herself for staying with him for so long, I'd beg her not to leave because he always threatened to kill her if she did.

It's so sad that I even have to share this with everyone, but I haven't had a real relationship with Michael Senior in years. That is the truth.

'Disappearing, then coming home after being gone for several days while cheating on my mother and abusing substances,' she said.

However, Michael Senior denied the allegation.

'That's a lie,' he told the New York Post. 'I guess Lindsay is on more drugs than I thought to say something like that.

'No wonder why God is taking her entire career away from her. Because she's forsaken everything He's given her and she's done nothing but misuse all the gifts she's given.'

He also released audio recordings - one of Lindsay sobbing to him about the breakdown of her relationship with Sam Ronson, and another of Dina talking about their daughter's alleged drug abuse.

'You don't even know what I'd go through trying to get her into, like, rehab and stuff. She'd like, punch me in the face, kick me out of the car.

'Like you don't know the **** I went through trying to get her an intervention by myself. It was very difficult.

'I told her not to go to L.A. at 18. She did. I couldn't leave these other three [Lindsay's siblings] to go get her and it was, like, a mess.'

Lindsay's response, via Twitter, was swift. 'He’s a deadbeat dad. He’s disgusting to do this…he needs help,' she wrote.

Michael, 49, said he had released the recordings to shame his daughter into getting treatment for her alleged drug addiction, and to disprove her claim that they had no real relationship.

But Lindsay's lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, has said that they are exploring civil and criminal charges against her father.

Windows 7 Planning Tools Ease the Upgrade Process

Businesses planning a move to Windows 7 need a more rigorous planning and assessment tool than the consumer-grade Upgrade Advisor.

Businesses planning a move to Windows 7 need a more rigorous planning and assessment tool than the consumer-grade Upgrade Advisor. The early success of the operating system notwithstanding, you need to do some due diligence up front to determine if the existing hardware and software you rely on will work with the new operating system. If you only have a handful of systems to assess the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor should do the trick. For larger deployments, the more appropriate tool is the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 4.0--or MAP.

MAP is a Solution Accelerator from Microsoft that allows you to inventory and analyze the systems in your organization without requiring any sort of agent software to be installed on the endpoints. MAP leverages existing Microsoft technologies such as Active Directory Domain Services, the Remote Registry Service, and the Computer Browser Service to gather information and produce informative reports to help guide your IT planning.

MAP analysis and reports can help with a variety of IT planning scenarios. MAP can help inventory servers and clients on the network, identify physical servers that are not being utilized effectively, and make recommendations for consolidating servers and virtualizing roles using Hyper-V. In this case though, we're mainly interested in the ability of MAP to determine hardware compatibility and readiness for upgrading to Windows 7.

MAP identifies systems running earlier versions of Windows like Windows XP and Windows Vista, then compares the MAP scan results against Windows 7 minimum and recommended system requirements. Systems that do not meet the needs of Windows 7 for things like memory, free disk space, or processor speed are identified, and MAP makes specific recommendations for actions to take to make the system ready for Windows 7.

The resulting Windows 7 Readiness Summary report provides a simple overview of the number of systems that are ready for Windows 7, the number that are not ready, and the number that will never be ready. The MAP results deliver the information you need to get your hardware up to speed for Windows 7.

MAP is great, but it actually only tells half of the story compared with the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. You also have to consider the software you rely on and whether those applications will work in Windows 7. Microsoft has another Solution Accelerator to fill that need--Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT).http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=24DA89E9-B581-47B0-B45E-492DD6DA2971&displaylang=en

Similar to MAP, ACT will scan the systems on your network and identify any software that is incompatible with Windows 7. Most applications should be able to run under Windows 7. For those critical applications that don't work in Windows 7, Microsoft provides XP Mode to bridge the gap and let you continue to run them in a virtual Windows XP system within Windows 7.

Armed with MAP and ACT results, you can plan your upgrade to Windows 7 to make it as efficient and hiccup-free as possible. A little due diligence and planning goes a long way to ensuring a smooth migration experience for your organization.

Next, determine which version of Windows 7 is right for you, and start planning your upgrade.

Unfair Contract Dispute, SM has Changed its Stand?

SM Entertainment CEO’s Kim Young Min, who is involved in the ‘unfair contract’ dispute with his artistes, has recently announced a new contract policy, and that it will be put into action once it gets approved by the related authorities.

SM Entertainment Representative, Kim Young Min, who attended the press conference which was held on the 2nd of November 2009 at 63 Tower, has expressed, “We would collect all comments from music and entertainment industries, related government departments, cultural and tourism board, fair trade departments, educational circles and legislative bodies, based on the law to adjudicate a new contract policy. After the approval from the respective authorities, we would then put it into action. Then follow it (new contract policy) enthusiastically.”

Kim agreed, “If we are able to come out with a new exclusive contract policy based on the law, SM would like to re-contract with all current artistes based on it.”

Kim also expressed, “Under the new exclusive contract, the moment it’s signed it would be protected till the contract ended, if not the current situation would repeat over and over again in the future.”

“In order to prove that what have just I said is nothing but the truth, we would first like to take the advice from the impartial committee,” he said.

But, everyone was not able to fully believe this announcement by SM Entertainment. Professor Lee from Korea Art University stated, “If SM do not wish to have what they have just said to turned into nothing, then they should assure them.” He continued, “Based on what SM have said, they do not wish to fully take on the advice from the impartial committee, but to forcefully come out with a new contract policy, which was questionable (their announcement).” Professor Lee ended, “If SM was really sincere about this, they should work on the new contract based on the advice and not vice versa, and then to get it approved by the representative authorities.”

Don't Call Robert Pattinson a Loverboy

Robert Pattinson may be a global heartthrob, but when it comes to his own romantic exploits, the Twilight star admits he can be a bit wimpy. "I can't think of a single romantic thing that I've ever done," Pattinson said while promoting the latest installment of the vampire series, New Moon, in Los Angeles Nov. 6.

"I would never serenade someone to be romantic – you have to have so much balls to do that. I put a flower in someone's locker when I was 15 years old, this girl called Maria. She thought that it was someone else and the other guy claimed it as well, which is great."

Despite his claims, Pattinson, 23, says he is a big believer in onscreen romance and balks at the common notion that it's for ladies only. "It's like saying guys can't appreciate romance," he says. "I've watched Titanic and I didn't think, 'Oh, this is a girl's film.'" Similarly, he says, "I felt like the storyline in New Moon is very heartbreaking and true. I didn't think I was doing something just for the sake of romance."

That said, are there any real similarities between Pattinson – rumored to be dating costar Kristin Stewart – and his tortured alter ego, Edward?

"I get quite obsessive about things, and possessive as well," says the star. "I have very, very specific ideas about how I want to do my work and how I want to be perceived, to the point of ridiculousness sometimes."

"I don't listen to anyone else," he says. "That's why I don't have a publicist – I can't stand it if someone's trying to tell me to do something which might be a mistake."

Mike He Admits that Tough Guys Don’t Want Tame Girls

Charlene as an Ideal Female Best Friend

Mike He and Charlene Choi are getting along very well with their collaboration in the Taiwanese idol drama “Calling for Love”. When the both of them interviewed for “Beauty” magazine several days ago, Mike made the claim that Charlene was the most ideal female best friend.

Since that interview, Mike hadn’t spread the scandal, and admitted that he had his mind on work and was not currently seeking romance. Regarding what he sees in a girl, Mike said that he values a girl’s personality the most, and that although he likes the attractive-type like Vivian Chow or Gigi Lai, he expressed that he would not fall in love with a beautiful girl.

Mike went on to say, “I’m a tough guy that is controlling and wishes to be strong. As long as my girlfriend doesn’t leave me, then I’ll think like that. I’m scared that things might go badly, and also scared that I might chase her out."

"I can only stand going places with my girlfriend and female friends. If I’m with guys, it’ll turn ugly. Nothing like that will happen with my girlfriend! With clothing, my girlfriend can only wear short skirts when she’s together with me.”

Refusing to Fall in Love with Someone in his Circle of Friends

Of all the female stars he has worked with, Mike claimed that Charlene and Rainie Yang (of "Devil Beside You" fame) were the most ideal female best friends, because with those two, their looks match their personality.

But he says that he can’t become more than friends with someone in his circle, because he can’t accept his girlfriend doing a kissing scene, and also can’t bear with the complicated various male-female relationships.

Mentioning Joe Cheng (of "It Started with a Kiss" fame) and how he released an album, Mike laughed and said, “I also like to sing. Compared to him, I sing and dance better.”

Mike also said that his younger days were idiotic, where he often did things out of control, but stopped short by saying that he didn't break any laws.

Charlene Loves a Boyfriend with a Sense of Humor

Charlene admitted that the things a guy has to be to date her are pretty strict. In addition with understanding how to be independent, he must also be brilliant and have a sense of humor.

Regarding skin care, she said she eats more soups and puts on a clay facial mask. Charlene also said, “Girls worry most about getting fat, but I don’t have that problem. It’s hard for me to get fat, and I’m only worried about my face. So when I was young, I would always press down on my cheeks."

She also said that Twins didn’t break up, and that they’re only doing their own thing temporarily. Charlene also stated that wants to become a great actress whom seems innocent, but is actually quite deceptive.

First iPhone, now Droid. Who needs Windows?

If the iPhone didn't finish off Windows Mobile in the smartphone market, the Motorola Droid may.

Windows Mobile is losing the last vestiges of its mojo--if it really had any to begin with--as the Droid and other phones based on the Android 2.0 operating system push the buzz meter needle into the red zone. Many in the media--which can play a big role in steering users to one technology platform or another--sense that Windows Mobile has now been relegated resolutely to has-been status.

Let's do a quick canvas of what some in the press are saying now that we're at the start of the Droid era. A post on SFGate.com (the Web site of the San Francisco Chronicle) is, like other commentary out there, clearly dismissive of Windows Mobile. "Curiously, Microsoft is nowhere to be seen in this battle royal," the author states, referring to the iPhone and Android.

And there's this more damning comment from a blog at SeattlePI.com. "Rarely mentioned, however, is another player in the mobile OS market--Microsoft. Why not? Because not many people in the smartphone world seem to really give a hoot about Windows Mobile anymore."

The litany of like articles is long. This post on PC World asks: "Has Microsoft Placed Its Last Mobile Bet?" The article cites research from Canalys showing Windows Mobile slipping from 13.9 percent of the worldwide smartphone market in 2002 to 9 percent in the second quarter of 2009.

The numbers are even less favorable in an accounting by ad service Admob, which compiles data on which operating systems are in use on mobile devices that access online ads. In August, according to AdMob, Windows Mobile had only a 4 percent share of the mobile OS market worldwide, down from 7 percent in February.

But getting back to my original premise of no mobile mojo for Windows. The fact is that consumers don't care about Windows on smartphones. In other words, while Windows seems to be a prerequisite for many consumers when buying a PC, it just doesn't come into play in a big way in a smartphone purchase.

This will have ramifications beyond Microsoft of course. Companies like Toshiba (and its attractive TG01 smartphone) will probably not be as successful on Windows Mobile as they would (will) be on Android 2.0. Or, at the very least, will not get the necessary buzz.

Then there's the Intel factor. Intel also wants to be a player, eventually, in the smartphone space. If it is indeed able to beat back Texas Instruments (whose chip is used in the Droid), Samsung (iPhone), Qualcomm (Blackberry), and Marvell, it probably won't do it by sticking to the tried-and-true "WinTel" combination that's been so outrageously successful in the PC space.

And Intel is chasing a fast-moving target. TI, and all the other ARM-based chip suppliers cited above, are slated to bring out dual-core designs that can hit speeds as high as 2GHz (think next-generation tablets and media pads). In other words, they'll also be able claim the coveted speed mantle on phones, such as the Droid, where Windows Mobile is no where in sight.

So the Droid may not be the iPhone killer but rather the Windows Mobile slayer. Microsoft, of course, will always have the unassailable PC franchise. But, wait, isn't Android coming to Netbooks next year? Maybe the real battle royal for Microsoft is yet to come.

Rain’s body before and after Ninja Assassin

Rain revealed some pictures of his abs before and after getting ripped for Ninja Assassin, his upcoming Hollywood movie, and the difference is pretty significant.

In the before picture, the singer-actor's well-known six pack is nowhere to be seen. Then there's a picture of him after working out for some time and his muscles seem to be developing. The final picture blew me away; all I could see were his intense guns and visible six pack abs!

I always thought Rain was one of those ridiculously muscular guys but this just shows how hard he worked for his movie.

His strong will has definitely got him far in his career. Who's excited for Ninja Assassin?

Sex tape shame of dethroned Miss California, the top pin-up for American conservatism

Her opposition to gay marriage and strong ties to religion made her an overnight celebrity and a top pin-up for American conservatism.

However, it's a controversial view of a different type that has pushed Carrie Prejean back into the spotlight.

The former Miss California now stands accused of a great act of hypocrisy after starring in what is being described as a 'solo sex tape'.

According to tabloid website TMZ.com, which obtained the video, the 'X-rated version of Home Alone' is 'too racy' to be published online.

The tape has reportedly been used in a legal battle between Prejean, 22, and Miss California USA, who are both suing each other.

Prejean was demanding more than $1million (£600,000) in damages from the company for allegedly firing her because of her beliefs and disclosing confidential information – including about her breast implants.

However, the Pageant was counter-suing, claiming Prejean had violated the terms of being Miss California.

According to beauty pageant contracts, contestants must assure they have not appeared in nude videos or pictures in their past.

At a legal meeting this week, lawyers for Miss California reportedly played the alleged sex tape to Prejean and her representatives - to illustrate how she had brought the pageant into disrepute.

'When the video started playing, Carrie's first reaction was "that's disgusting",' TMZ.com, which claims to have spoken to lawyers present at meeting, reported.

'Carrie denied it was her. Then, the camera angle changed ... and panned up to her face.

'She was caught red-handed, so to speak. Carrie was rendered speechless and immediately began talking with her lawyer.

'We're told it took about 15 seconds for Carrie to drop her $1million demand.'

Platinum-blonde Prejean is said to have received just $100,000 to cover legal costs.

Both sides said they 'wish each other well in future endeavours,' in a joint statement.

The dethroned beauty queen was this year crowned runner-up of Miss USA - missing out on the title after answering a question on gay marriage from blogger Perez Hilton.

During the competition in April, Prejean said: 'I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other ... same sex marriage or opposite marriage.

'I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman ... that's how I was raised.'

Being interviewed afterwards, Prejean said had she been asked another question, 'I know I would have won', but added: 'It wasn't what God wanted for my life that night.'

In the weeks and ensuring controversy that followed, Prejean was fired as Miss California after falling out with the pageant's organisers.

It came just a month after Donald Trump, who owns the production company that holds the Miss California pageant, told Prejean she could keep the crown.

On Friday, after the discovery of the sex tape was made public, Prejean was ditched as a celebrity guest at a fundraiser being held by right-wing group Defenders Of The Family.

The company is refusing to say whether she declined to appear or whether she was asked not to.

Prejean's lawyer, Charles LiMandri, has not commented on the tape, but claims to be upset that 'inaccurate and misleading' rumours about the legal settlement had been leaked.

Vanness Wu plays a patient in new drama; runs barefoot on the street

Vanness Wu plays a patient suffering from brain cancer in new drama 'Autumn's Concerto'. Earlier, he filmed a scene where he wears a hospital garment and runs barefoot on the road to chase after Ady An's car. As filming took place at noon, the ground was very hot, and Vanness joked: "It feels like I'm dancing on a hot iron plate!" Vanness expressed that, in order to highlight his anxious feelings, he had a discussion with the director and decided to run barefoot. In this scene, Vanness tries to run very fast, but he is unable to catch up to the car, and falls on the streets. Besides being busy with filming, and memorising scripts, Vanness has also been busy recording, to prepare for his new album.

Rumors of a $99 8GB iPhone 3G S Alight on Droid's Big Launch Day

Are Apple and AT&T planning to launch a $99 8GB iPhone 3G S in time for the holidays? This rumor was offered by a popular source. True or not, what does it say about the Motorola Droid — and the growing crop of Apple look-alikes?

On the day Verizon Wireless launched the Motorola Droid, its best shot at an iPhone killer, rumors emerged of plans between Apple and AT&T to launch a $99 iPhone 3G S in time for the holidays.

The source of the rumors was the Boy Genius Report, which said it heard the news, which was “definitely not confirmed,” from two sources.

“I could potentially see a scenario in which AT&T does reduce the pricing on the iPhone 3G S to $99 as a response to the Droid and other handset offerings from Verizon and others,” said Ken Hyers, an analyst with Technology Business Research, in response to the rumor.

The Droid, which BillShrink.com showed to be priced identically to the iPhone, may be the most direct about wanting to entice away potential Apple customers, but Sprint and T-Mobile have additionally launched new touch-screen-based smartphones this holiday season and have hopes of attracting customers to sign two-year contracts with them—instead of with AT&T. Among these devices are the Motorola Cliq, the Samsung Behold II, the T-Mobile Tap and myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition, all from T-Mobile, as well as the Samsung Moment from Sprint. In addition to the Droid, Verizon has armed itself with the HTC Droid Eris and the BlackBerry Storm 2.

“Another driver for price reductions would be anticipation of an end to AT&T’s exclusive iPhone relationship, likely in 2010,” said Hyers.

“Since the [fourth-quarter] holiday shopping season is traditionally the busiest quarter for adding new subscribers, AT&T might see this as their last chance to get a substantial number of new iPhone customers and lock them into two-year contracts, and so would push it aggressively.” he said. “If they do drop the price of the iPhone to $99, that would certainly lend credence to the idea that the exclusive relationship would be ending soon.”

Apple currently offers its 8GB iPhone 3G for $99, and so offering a $99 8GB iPhone 3G S would allow it to stop manufacturing the earlier version—in addition to mucking up what was surely Verizon’s very intentionally aligned pricing plan: its 16GB, $199 Droid vs. Apple’s 16GB, $199 iPhone 3G S.

“I can't comment on rumors—and I should remind you that the bulk of Apple rumors are usually wrong,” said Avi Greengart, an analyst with Strategy Analytics.

However, he added, “With that said, no one buying a $99 iPhone 3G is going to turn down a faster $99 iPhone 3G S, but the existing [Apple] lineup at $99/$199/$299 is already competitive.”

Whether or not the Apple rumor proves true, with it comes the idea that, iPhone killer or not, the Droid, and similar offerings, may finally be innovative and compelling enough to truly give consumers pause before signing a contract this holiday season.

“By the way,” TBR’s Hyers told in an e-mail, “I’ve been using the Droid for a while now—it’s a really sweet device and I think that it and the Android platform is a formidable threat to the iPhone and other smartphone [operating systems].”

Not good news for Cupertino—even through the grapevine.
