Nolan won't replace Ledger as Joker in 'Batman 3'

Batman is returning, but he won't have the Joker to contend with next time.

Director Christopher Nolan says he will not bring back the Joker, the villain played so maniacally in "The Dark Knight" by the late Heath Ledger that the role earned him an Academy Award a year after his death.

Nolan would not disclose what villain or villains might take on Batman in the next film, due out July 20, 2012, the same weekend that brought the record-breaking $158.4 million debut of "The Dark Knight" in 2008.

"For me, Heath was the definitive Joker," Nolan said in an interview to promote "Inception," his sci-fi thriller opening Friday. "It wouldn't feel appropriate to readdress that character."

Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in January 2008. His death stoked fan interest in "The Dark Knight," which topped $1 billion at the box office worldwide.

With his supporting-actor win, Ledger became only the second performer ever to earn an Oscar posthumously.

The next "Batman" film will be the third in the current Warner Bros. incarnation of the franchise, which stars Christian Bale as the vigilante superhero.

Lindsay Lohan's Plan to Stay Out of Jail

Lindsay Lohan might have been sentenced to 90 days in the slammer last week by an angry judge, but that doesn't mean the troubled young actress is going down without a fight.

"Lindsay has no intention of going to jail," a friend of Lohan's tells me. "The only thing that Lindsay did wrong was hire the wrong attorney and now she has fixed that."

Lindsay now has a new attorney, Stuart V. Goldberg, who has arrived in Los Angeles from Chicago claiming, "We're going after them."

Lindsay is supposed to surrender to the court by July 20, but now that her new lawyer is in place, sources tell me Lindsay is confident she won't have to spend a minute in jail.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Would Get Married – If the Kids Asked Them To

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have never made marriage a priority. But that could change with a request from a few special people.

"I think it would be hard to say no to the kids," Jolie, 35, said Monday morning on ABC's Good Morning America in an excerpt of an interview airing Monday night on Nightline.

But so far, it hasn't been an issue, as none of their six children seem to think it's a priority, either. "They're not asking," Jolie says. "They are very aware that nothing's missing."

Jolie, who stars in the new spy thriller Salt, touches on other aspects of her family in the interview, including whether it will get any larger. She and Pitt, 46, are torn about the issue – drawn to the idea of it, yet dreading how it would stretch them even thinner.

"We always have this thing, first thing in the morning, where we're really, really tired, and we look at each other and we wonder, Are we ever going to get sleep?" the actress says. "And yet we still love the idea of having more children."

On Testing, Consumer Reports Retracts Its iPhone 4 Recommendation

After initially saying that the iPhone 4's reception issues were no big deal, Consumer Reports has changed its tune, recognizing that the software fix won't help things, and retracting their recommendation. They just got around to testing it, you see.

Their engineers have apparently just completed testing of the phone and have discovered it has the reception issues everyone else has known about for weeks:

When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side-an easy thing, especially for lefties-the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can't recommend the iPhone 4.

Jay Chou to turn talk show host?

Asian superstar Jay Chou has revealed that he hopes to try his hand at hosting a television talk show host and would invite Jolin Tsai as a guest.

"I feel that hosting is something I haven't tried before, so I would like to take up this challenge this year if I have the time and host an interesting talk show" he told a Shanghai newspaper.

"I would invite all my friends, the make-up artist, choreographer and of course Jolin Tsai," said Chou.

Speculation had been rife about their relationship since Tsai, who broke up with Chou in 2005, appeared as a guest during his concert in June and danced intimately before all present.

As Chou was tight-lipped as before on his Tsai, letting him have his own show and inviting Tsai as a guest, will definitely be one talk-show to watch.

RIM releases second BlackBerry 6 video sneak peek

RIM has just released another “sneak peek” video for its yet-to-be-released BlackBerry 6. The video demos the OS floating in space, rather than on a device, but hey…it’s better than nothing. We’re interested to know what you think. So on the double; hit the jump, watch the video, and sound off.

Ballmer: ASUS, Dell, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony Windows 7 tablets are coming

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has confirmed that ASUS, Dell, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony will all be launching Windows 7 based slate form-factor tablets this year. Speaking at the Worldwide Partner Conference today, Ballmer declined to mention specific models or specifications, but did say that various form-factors and functionality would be on offer, including slates with keyboards, touchscreen-only models, some dockable and others able to handle digital ink.

While Ballmer didn’t mention the iPad by name, it takes no small stretch of the imagination to assume that’s the key rival Microsoft has in mind. Some of the firms listed have already tipped their tablet hand, at least partially: ASUS revealed its Eee Pad models at Computex, while Toshiba has shown the unusual dual-display Libretto W100. Still, we’re yet to see Sony, Samsung or Dell’s attempts.

Charlene Choi admits she has a new pursuer

Already several months of being single again, Charlene Choi (Ah Sa) has been busy promoting for her album. It was rumored that she has a new pursuer, but yesterday at her autograph session, she refused to say who her pursuer is. She strongly stressed that she doesn't want to be photographed and get into trouble, so she won't start a new relationship.

Yesterday Ah Sa held an autograph session for her Mandarin album <AS A SA>. Just returned to Hong Kong from filming a movie, she said that the temperatures at the location was 40 degrees C, it was so hot she can get a heat stroke. Due to the hot weather, she was not able to fully recover from her flu: "Coming back to Hong Kong, I had a fever. I took medicine, but then I had diarrhea. Maybe I ate a poisonous pill!" Ah Sa is currently busy recording for her new Cantonese album, and will soon fly to Shandong, Guangdong to film a new drama. It is estimated that she'll be done with her jobs by October.

Recently, Ah Sa has a new pursuer, she was unwilling to reveal anything: "Huh? Whatever! Worry about it later! I have to be away from Hong Kong for a long time!" The pursuer is in Hong Kong? "Worry about it later! I have to leave again, don't bother with it or else I'll get photographed and cause trouble for myself. Leave it to fate!" She's not afraid that her pursuer won't be able to wait and give up on her? Ah Sa helplessly said: "Well I can't help it." She used "don't want to talk about it" as her reason, refusing to say if her pursuer is someone from the industry. She added: "I didn't say anything does not mean it's true, nor does it mean it's not true."

Actress Park Shin Hye has ruled herself out of upcoming drama Playful Kiss (or It Started With a Kiss) which has already confirmed the lead male role to be SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong, leaving many fans disappointed.

Park Shin Hye stated, “Even though I haven’t seen the script yet, I really wanted to participate in this drama. But I felt that I wasn’t ready to work on this though, especially because I have many other activities to attend to, I’m sorry.”

Other nominees for the role include Park Bo Young who is currently dealing with legal issues, and f(x)’s cutie Sulli. Seungyeon had to drop out due to KARA’s upcoming promotional activities in Japan. Will there be a surprise?

Android App Inventor lets you be the developer (video)

Google is following in Nokia's footsteps today by offering its users a simple-to-use DIY app maker. Employing a design scheme that relies on visual blocks rather than oodles of arcane code, the App Inventor -- still in Beta, of course -- has functions for "just about anything" you can do with an Android handset, including access to GPS and phone functionality. All that's really missing is the raw creative talent, which we're sure you'll be happy to provide. Hit the source link to get involved or skip past the break for an educational video.

HTC 1 concept takes Android minimal

We’re suckers for a good concept design here, and so we’re hoping HTC are paying attention to Andrew Kim. His concept for the so-called HTC 1 is a premium Android phone that would be clearly differentiated from the company’s mainstream models and better harmonize physical and software design. To that end, he’s come up with a slick slab of minimalist machined brass with a rather striking interpretation of HTC Sense.

That breaks down the artificial division of homescreen and widget, and instead gives you full-screen widgets for things like news, social networking and more. There’s also a new media player and cross-platform instant messaging/communications app.

Sprint launches 4G in new markets. White HTC EVO 4G now available

Today, Sprint announced it has expanded its 4G coverage in seven new metropolitan markets: Rochester (N.Y.), Syracuse (N.Y.), Merced (California), Visalia (California), Eugene (Oregon), Tri-Cities (Washington), and Yakima (Washington).

Speaking of 4G, Sprint’s first 4G smartphone, the HTC EVO 4G, is now available in white at Best Buy (for $199.99 on contract) – you can buy it online here. That’s really good news for those in need of an EVO, since the black version is still sold out, both at Sprint and Best Buy.

Edison Chen steps out as film producer

Hong Kong actor-singer Edison Chen revealed his plans to start his own film company and work on a film next year, during a book signing event in Shanghai on Sunday, said Chinese media.

The 29-year-old, who had spent most of his time in the United States since his sex photo scandal hit headlines in 2008, said he will neither star nor direct the film, but will instead be the film’s producer.

Chen explained that he decided to be the producer as he was not sure what his comeback acting role should be, and did not have what it takes to direct a film yet.

“I am still not prepared to be a director, so if I directed a film now, it would definitely turn out to be a bad film. That is why I am studying under an accomplished film producer and working with (Hong Kong film veteran) Eric Tseng’s film company.

In this 14th edition of the Grand Prix, Jaejoong has won in the category of Best Supporting Actor with 7018 votes. A Despicable Thing Happens to Eclipse

Eclipse didn't collapse. Despicable Me just plain towered over it.

The Steve Carell CGI toon ruled the weekend box office with an estimated $60.1 million Friday-Sunday debut.

Eclipse slipped to second ($33.4 million)—and, at the same time, rose to first.

The sequel is now the top-grossing member of the Twilight Saga, having passed New Moon. The race is still close, but at the same point in their releases, Eclipse has the lead: $237 million domestically to $235 million.

Other box-office doings:

• Predators, the weekend's other major new release, had a nifty debut. The $40 million action-sci-fi legacy act bowed with $25.3 million. Among Predator movies—and there are five of them now—that's the second-highest opening.

• Toy Story 3 ($22 million; $340.2 million overall domestic) stands poised today to become the highest-grossing Disney/Pixar movie ever—a that's-saying-a-lot category if ever there was one. (The previous No. 1? Finding Nemo.)

Incredible But True: Edward Norton Booted From The Avengers

Looks like Edward Norton isn't so incredible after all.

Marvel Studios confirms that it's searching for a new actor to play Dr. Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk in Joss Whedon's highly-anticipated summer 2012 blockbuster The Avengers. Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth have already joined the cast.

Norton starred as the hot-headed Hulk in the studio's 2008 hit The Incredible Hulk and was expected to reprise the role for the star-studded superhero flick.

What's most incredible, perhaps, is the studio's reason for giving Norton the boot.

What Lindsay Lohan Can Expect in Jail

Lindsay Lohan will soon be trading in her designer duds for a stiff cotton Los Angeles County Jail jumpsuit come her three-month sentence, likely to be served at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, Calif.

Legal experts say she'll likely serve between two weeks to a month due to the sheriff's long-standing policy of releasing nonviolent offenders early due to overcrowding, presuming she'll also get time off for good behavior. She is due to surrender to the court and begin her sentence on July 20.

Paris Hilton served 23 days of a 45-day sentence at the same jail for violating her probation in a DUI case and was sprung early for good behavior.

"I was basically in the fetal position, basically in hysterics," Hilton told PEOPLE at the time of her first sleepless nights in jail. As for her fellow inmates, she said, "All of the inmates were very supportive. There were girls next to me. We could talk through the vents and they were just really sweet."

Apple Rolls Out Four More iPhone 4 Ads — Each About FaceTime

Yesterday, I broke down Apple’s minute-long FaceTime commercial for iPhone 4, noting how it seemed almost as if Don Draper from the hit AMC show Mad Men had created it. Now Apple has four other 30-second spots for the iPhone 4 that it has just put into rotation on national television. And yes, they’re all about FaceTime too.

The four spots are titled, “Smile,” “Meet Her,” “Haircut,” and “Big News.” Each revolve around situations where FaceTime can dramatically improve what would normally be more traditional phone calls. They’re not quite as dramatic as the overall package of the longer original commercial (nor are they as good). But two of them still go straight for the heart strings. While the other two are more everyday conversations made better by video.
“Smile” finds a girl talking to her father on the iPhone 4, but she refuses to smile. He finally stats singing, which makes her smile, and it reveals her new braces.
“Meet Her” involves a son showing his father his new granddaughter for the first time. The grandfather gets choked up.
“Haircut” has a girlfriend calling a boyfriend to show off her new short haircut. Rather than having to describe it, she can actually show it. The boyfriend agrees it is short, but loves it.
“Big News” is the closest to the original one. In it, a wife calls a husband to give him some big news: she’s pregnant.

T-Mobile slashes $70 off the price of the Garminfone, now available for $129

T-Mobile has cut the price of the Garminfone by $70, lowering the handset to $129.99 with a two year agreement. This price cut comes hot on the heels of a series of contradictory rumors regarding the demand for the GPS-centric device. Earlier this week, analyst Yair Reiner calculated that T-Mobile has sold a paltry 20,000 Garminfones since the phone launched in June. Asustek refuted that number with a claim that the handset was shipping as expected and consumer demand was positive. Until actual sales figures are released, we will be left to speculate whether this price drop is part of a natural cycle of retail markdowns or the early signs of an impending fire sale.

Leehom brings you simple happiness with new album and MV

Back in 2008, Leehom Wang brought us his innermost thoughts through his "Heart Beat" album. At the end of this month, on the 30th, Leehom will be returning to his musical roots with a brand new album, "十八般武艺" (Roughly translates to: Eighteen Types of Martial Arts). However, before that, he will be releasing the MV of the album's title song, "柴米油鹽醬醋茶," (Idiom roughly meaning: Daily Necessities) for broadcast onto 12 online sites, including Youtube and Facebook, on the 12th. For this song, he collaborated with Vivian Hsu to paint a picture of simple and ordinary happiness.

Having dabbled as a movie director, Leehom placed even higher demands on the quality of the MV. Besides spending NT$2,000,000, hiring 30 staff members, renting professional movie cameras, and using 35mm film for shooting, he also personally demonstrated how to walk into place and speak the lines. In one kitchen scene, "Director Wang" personally went into battle and picked up the knife and saucepan, bringing out the rare sight of him at home.

Barbie appears at Peter's signing event and compliments his "big eagle"

Yesterday, Peter Ho held an autographing event for his latest album, "Remember Loved," attracting over a hundred fans. Not only his family came to show their support, even Barbie Hsu made an appearance. Being touched by all the affection from his friends and family, he couldn’t help but shed some manly tears.

It’s been three years since Peter has held such an event. Thus, his older sister specially flew back from Canada in secret to surprise Peter. The brother-sister pair sang a duet together on stage, and Peter commented, “She must be a ninja! She stayed home for a night and I didn’t even notice.”

Katy Perry suffers a bad skin day with a big breakout of spots as she heads to the gym

With the amount of make-up pop stars have to wear, they're all bound to succumb to a spot or two every now and then.

And Katy Perry is no exception, as these pictures of her bad skin day show.

The pop star suffered a nasty breakout of spots yesterday around her mouth and chin as she headed to the gym in Los Angeles.

And even though she pulled her baseball cap down low over her aviator sunglasses and kept her head down, the acne was all too clear to see.

Katy, 25, was snapped in her workout gear heading into a private gym in Hollywood, looking trim in her lycra cycling shorts and vest top.

Clutching a vitamin drink and her car keys, she left the gym in the blazing sunshine and headed to her car.

Mel Gibson's Long, Hateful History

Mel Gibson has had more comebacks than Jesus.

While the critics are probably right in saying he's going to have a hard time restoring the public's affection after his most recent tirade--shocking recordings of verbal and implied physical abuse against his girlfriend--he's been in similar situations before, many times.

A look at his public record isn't pretty.

As web sites such as Gawker.com have pointed out, his trail of ugly rhetoric stretches back to 1991, when he angered the gay community with remarks made to the Spanish newspaper El Pais and reported in the U.S. by columnist Liz Smith.

"They take it up the a**..this is only for taking a s***," he told the newspaper. "With this look, who's going to think I'm gay? I don't lend myself to that type of confusion. Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?"

When asked about the comments by Good Morning America, he replied: "I don't think there's an apology necessary, and I'm certainly not giving one. [Those remarks were a response] to a direct question. If someone wants my opinion, I'll give it. What, am I supposed to lie to them?"

When asked about the incident again by Playboy in 1995, he responded: "I'll apologize when hell freezes over. They can f*** off." (He later agreed to peace talks with the gay group GLAAD, brokered by its then-media director, Chaz Bono.)

iPhone lawsuit wins class action status

A lawsuit against Apple and AT&T over their exclusivity contract has been granted class action status, meaning it now includes anyone who bought an iPhone between June 29, 2007, and present day and signed up for AT&T service.

The heart of the class action suit, which was originally filed in October 2007, is whether consumers who entered the two-year contract with AT&T did so knowing that they were actually entering a de-facto five-year contract because that's what the AT&T-Apple exclusivity agreement has been reported to be.

Apple has never publicly stated how long its exclusivity contract with AT&T is, though a five year time period--first reported by USA Today back in 2007--was recently confirmed through court documents related to this case.

HTC Sync lets tethered AT&T Aria sideload apps

Looks like more than HTC's description was erroneous yesterday afternoon -- we've just confirmed that the HTC Sync desktop client for the AT&T Aria allows users to install third-party apps on non-rooted devices, just as promised. We ran some quick tests, and while it doesn't actually enable anything on the handset end, it most certainly does allow those of you with Windows PCs (or VMware) to sideload APKs like Swype over USB with a simple drag-and-drop maneuver. Given how quickly the company sought to correct our original post on the subject, we'd expect HTC will be issuing a rather different version of the software soon, so hit up that source link, pound in your serial number, grab the EXE, and get while the getting's good.

Netizens are disappointed with Son Dambi’s live singing

To really hear her live singing voice, netizens removed the MR of Son Dambi’s Queen comeback stage on Music Bank.

After taking a listen, netizens were very disappointed with what they heard. They commented,

“I’m getting sick of the auto tune.”
“Son Dambi GG (give up game)”
“Did she even practice?”
“She’s just pretty and that’s it.”
“Aren’t all singers like this now?”

It seems like Son Dambi is not off to a great start. First, her music video gets hit with plagiarism accusations and now this.

Pixie Lott is a beautiful ballerina bridesmaid at her cousin's wedding

Not many people can boast a celebrity as one of their bridesmaids.

But a young lady in Essex certainly can after her cousin Pixie Lott helped her celebrate her big day.

The pop star was a bridesmaid at her cousin Lauren's wedding in Essex yesterday and looked like any other bridesmaid as she arrived at the church.

Dressed in a ballerina-style short strapless dress, she clutched a pretty posy of flowers as she and the other three bridesmaid posed for pictures in the sunshine.

The corseted, tutu dress showed off her shapely figure and her heels made her tower over the other girls.

But despite the camera's attention on her, Pixie made sure that everyone knew it was her cousin's big day and tried to stay in the background as much as possible.

Jessica Simpson Shares Sexy Birthday Kiss with New Man

Jessica Simpson jumped at the chance to lock lips with what looked to be her rumored boyfriend Eric Johnson over the weekend, and ET has the pic.

Simpson celebrated her 30th birthday by reportedly partying on the Italian island of Capri with Johnson, a former pro footballer. In the photo above, she is seen on a yacht with her legs wrapped around a young man, kissing him.

In April, Simpson chatted with Ellen DeGeneres about dating again following her public break up with NFL star Tony Romo. She told the talk show host, "I'm single but mingling around. ... I mingle around very privately." Simpson added, "I'm still out there dating."

Angelina Jolie: Shiloh, 4, Is "Fascinating"

Angelina Jolie defends her 4-year-old daughter Shiloh's masculine clothing choices and quirky personality in a new interview to promote Salt (out July 23).

"I think she [Shiloh] is fascinating, the choices she is making. And I would never be the kind of parent to force somebody to be something they are not. I think that is just bad parenting," she told Reuters.

Earlier, she called the tot's look "Montenegro style" -- a term several well-known stylists said she made up -- and said she "wants to be a boy."

Continued Jolie, who is also raising Maddox, 8, Pax, 6, Zahara, 5, and twins Knox and Viv, 2, with partner Brad Pitt, "Children should be allowed to express themselves in whatever way they wish without anybody judging them because it is an important part of their growth."

"Society always has something to learn when it comes to the way we judge each other, label each other. We have far to go," added Jolie, who has often made her own actions into social statements, including declaring that she would never wed Pitt until it was legal for everyone to do so.

Like Shiloh's tomboy style, Jolie disguised herself as a man to play a rogue CIA officer in her spy thriller.

"It was fascinating," she said. "The stunt guys I usually hung out talking to, didn't want to hang out with me. The girls didn't know how to respond... there was something about him that kind of freaked the whole crew out."

"Despicable Me" Leads North American Box Office

"Despicable Me," a new family cartoon featuring the voice of Steve Carell, easily took the top spot at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday, virtually assuring Universal Pictures of a lucrative franchise with its first foray into 3D animation.

The film earned an estimated $60.1 million across the United States and Canada during the three days beginning Friday, the General Electric Co. unit said, doubling pre-opening forecasts.

It was produced for about $69 million by former 20th Century Fox animation chief Chris Meledandri's new company, Illumination Entertainment, which has an exclusive financing and distribution deal with Universal.
