iPhone OS 4.0 imminent tips App developer

The iPhone has gone without a significant OS update for some months now, and according to rumors earlier this week that’s all the fault of the Apple iSlate tablet. A “close Apple” insider suggested that the Cupertino company had been forced to hold off on releasing updated software for their smartphone as it would contain too many references to the upcoming tablet; so, when a “prominent app developer” tells CNET they “Just wanted to give you a heads up that we’ve submitted an updated app for the new iPhone 4.0 software”, it’s no surprise that the rumor mill starts cranking.

Not only does this – if taken at face value – confirm that Apple are preparing iPhone OS 4.0 for imminent release, but it also suggests that the iSlate tablet is also ready to go public. Considering all the rumors are pointing toward an Apple event later on this month at which the company is expected to announce the iSlate, such a timescale certainly fits in.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth: NOT Engaged... Yet (?!?)

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are not engaged! Witnesses apparently spied a diamond ring on the singer's finger, contacted a celebrity gossip site and talk began to surface that the Australian actor had proposed to the 17-year old.

This is not true. But might it be soon?

An insider told E! News that Cyrus does see herself "marrying young." Moreover, she's "totally in love" and has told people in her life that Liam is "the one." (Sorry, Nick Jonas and Justin Gaston, we hope you aren't reading this.)

Adding fuel to this engagement fire? Sources state that Miley and Liam now live together in the Cyrus family home.

Might marriage really be that far behind? Should Miley wait a few years before she settles down? And can Noah Cyrus please stop singing about getting crunked?!?

Cowell the billionaire: New deal will see X Factor head to U.S - and Simon join rich superleague

Simon Cowell is on the verge of signing a ‘billion dollar’ deal with Sony BMG that will see him reclaim the rights to the X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.

The 50-year-old star is at the end of his five-year, £10-million-a-year deal with Sony, but is next week expected to announce a new deal that will dwarf the expired contract.

As part of the deal, Cowell is in talks to win back control of his hit ITV talent shows that have been sold around the world, after initially selling the rights to Sony in 2005.

It would also see his company, Syco – which comes under the Sony banner – standing alone and taking ownership of his hit formats. This would see him make millions more from selling the shows abroad – as well as the winning contestants.

Cowell was last year estimated to have a fortune of £120 million in the Sunday Times Rich List, but a source said: ‘This will make Cowell a dollar billionaire. It will send him into the rich superleague.’

The news comes just days after Cowell quit American Idol – the show which made him a star in the States - and announced plans to launch the X Factor in the US in 2011.

Mozilla dumps Firefox 3.7 from schedule, changes dev process

Plans to quicken development pace by adding some features via security updates

Mozilla has made major changes to how it develops Firefox, and plans to drop Firefox 3.7 from its schedule and instead roll out incremental changes throughout the year, a company executive said today.

Rather than add features to Firefox only in once- or twice-a-year upgrades, Mozilla will quietly insert some functionality via its regular security updates, which appear every four to six weeks, said Mike Beltzner, director of Firefox, in an interview Thursday.

Teenager Arrested For Threatening To Blow Up An Apple Store

Here's a Genius Bar horror story for you: Justin Barry, an apparently disgruntled seventeen year old, walked into a Staten Island Apple Store and typed this message on one of the display machines. He's now facing seven years in prison.

I have threatened your store and all its employees with a bloody death ... whoever the crew maybe working, or the innocent citizens that walk in ... will be eliminated with the force of a... bomb loaded with C4, strapped to my chest.

HONG Kong superstar Andy Lau was dropped from the 9th Hong Kong Actors Association committee due to his secret marriage, Chinese dailies reported.

Nanyang Siang Pau said Lau, who was a likely replacement for outgoing committee president Alan Tam Wing-Lun, was not voted in as one of its 21 committee members.

The daily said Eric Tsang Chi-Wai was voted in as the ninth committee president instead.

The Association's secretary told the daily that all 21 in the committee were voted by its members, then the committee would vote out their president and vice-presidents.

'It is the members' choice to vote for their committee members,' she said.

Devotes time to baby girl; Frankie Lam rejects work proposals

Kenix Kwok recently gave birth to a baby girl on January 14th, with mother and daughter both in stable condition. The baby girl is very cute, weighing in at 7.48lbs, and is likened to Kenix. Frankie Lam announced the good news to media personally yesterday, and the new father could hardly conceal his pride and excitement. He expressed that his wife, daughter and himself are now a "three in one" unit, and in his heart, no one can replace their spots.

Frankie held a press conference at Canossa Hospital in Hong Kong yesterday, saying, "We are still deciding on our baby's name, the physiognomist offered many names for us to choose from. I never knew choosing a great name was so hard!"

Google's Android platform poised to take on iPhone

One of the most important developments of the past 18 months has been the iPhone's emergence as a breakthrough platform for music applications. But thanks to Google's Android platform, Apple's iPhone will face some meaningful competition this year in the mobile music app market.

Unlike the iPhone, which is a device developed and manufactured by one company, Android is a smart-phone operating system offered to any phone manufacturer that wants to build products around the technology. In addition to integrating such popular Google services as Gmail and Google Maps, Android devices can access the Android Market -- Google's answer to Apple's App Store, where users can buy and download a variety of mobile apps from a selection of third-party developers.

Fa.il: Bing’s URL Shortener Is Longer Than Bing’s Own Domain

Everyone is getting into the URL shortening game these days. Google, YouTube, and Facebook are just a few joining the likes of the established players such as Bit.ly. And now Microsoft is jumping in. But there’s something weird about their URL.

Samsung C3510 officially announced; should hit the market this month

Samsung C3510 – also known as Samsung Corby Pop and Samsung Genoa – has just been officially announced by Samsung Russia.

As you may already know, the C3510 resembles the Samsung Corby S3650, but it offers fewer features. For example, the C3510 has a 1.3MP camera and only 30MB of internal memory (although you can expand that with a MicroSD card).

The Samsung C3510 also comes with a 2.8 inch QVGA touchscreen display, widgets, social networking integration, web browser, music player, Samsung DNSe technology, 3.5mm headset jack, FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth and so on.

On Oprah, Lady Gaga Urges Her 'Little Monsters' To Help With Haiti Relief

Lady Gaga visited the set of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' this afternoon for a candid interview and performance dressed wearing what else but a sparkly white catsuit and sea-urchin-inspired hair.

But the 'Poker Face' singer got serious as she discussed the importance of supporting the relief effort in Haiti. Recalling her time in New York during 9/11, she admits she "never felt like anyone understood" what the city was going through and now wants to raise awareness to her fans about the importance of lending a hand abroad. Tearing up, she also revealed that all proceeds from her January 24 concert in New York City will go to Haiti. (Forward to the 3:10 mark.)

Mila Kunis On Megan Fox: “She Has A Tendacity To Say The Most Absurd Sh@t!”

It’s Mila Kunis like you’ve never seen her before. The petite former star of That ’70s Show is stripped down and refreshingly real in a chat with the February issue of Esquire. Clad in lacy lingerie and decked out in a killer pair of pumps, Mila speaks frankly about her role in The Book of Eli, her love for The Huffington Post, and her thoughts on fellow sex symbol Megan Fox.

Actually, Mila’s not quite sure what to make of Meg and stopped short of suggesting public speaking classes and a better publicist: “She has a tendency to say absurd shit and then see what happens. I hope she’s fully consciously aware of what she’s doing, because if she is, she’s brilliant.”

Motorola ‘Ruth’ Android phone specs unearthed – not quite Droid-like

Another Android phone planned by Motorola has been dug out from the depths of the company’s own user agent profile database – this time with the more unassuming name ‘Ruth’, and model number MB551.

Revealed is a 240 x 320 QVGA display (definitely not Droid-like), QWERTY keyboard, Qualcomm MSM7200A 528MHz CPU, Bluetooth 2.0, and a GSM / WCDMA radio of some sort. It’ll run on GSM with 3G bands.

Bing Could Catch Yahoo By The End Of The Year

Since Microsoft's Bing search engine launched last summer, it has gained market share at the expense of Yahoo. If the trends stay consistent, Bing could pass Yahoo in the U.S. by the end of November.

To be sure, some (most?) of Microsoft's gains have come with an expense: The company is buying up toolbar deals to become the default search engine for more users — less-valuable, paid traffic that Yahoo seems happy to give up. And Microsoft has spent a lot of money advertising Bing.

The real reason to TaecYeon-YoonA casting on FO2? 2PM JunHo is jealous?

There have been fans who are worried of a loveline that will happen between So Nyeo Shi Dae YoonA and 2PM TaecYeon. They have both been casted for SBS Family Outing 2 recently. Here’s a reason to fans of both side as to why they were casted.

FO2 PD Kwak SeungYeong said recently, “Even though we see the responses whenever we had idol appearance on the show, that is not the only thing we were thinking of when we do the casting.”

U.S. plans formal complaint over Google attacks

The U.S. government plans to ask China for a formal explanation regarding the cyberattacks against Google and other U.S. companies, according to a State Department spokesman.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had already hinted at such a move in a statement she released when Google first revealed the attacks. "We will be issuing a formal demarche to the Chinese government in Beijing on this issue in the coming days, probably early this week," AFP quoted State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley as saying during a briefing Friday.

Simon Cowell Turned Down $100 Million To Remain On “American Idol”

Simon Cowell turned down $100 million to stay at "American Idol," a source told Page Six, and he now wants to hire music mogul Tommy Mottola as a judge on his new show, "The X Factor."

But Cowell insists there are no hard feelings over his leaving to bring over his British smash-hit, "X Factor" in 2011. He told us, "If I thought it would lead to the death of 'Idol,' I genuinely wouldn't have done it. We are sure that 'Idol' will continue successfully.

"Everyone seemed quite cool about it," Cowell said.

"Ellen [DeGeneres] sort of saw the funny side," he said of the new, fourth "American Idol" judge. "She was kidding around with me, saying: 'On my first day you decide to quit?' She's professional. I don't think it was a total surprise."

Adam Lambert Shows Off His Many Sides In 'Whataya Want From Me' Video

Just-released clip paints 'American Idol' runner-up as an emotionally raw and exhausted man.

It's not easy being Adam Lambert.

That seems to be the message behind the music video for Lambert's "Whataya Want From Me," which premiered on MTV and VH1 on Friday morning (January 15).

The brand-new clip showcases the glam rocker in a sparse industrial apartment. But instead of the "glittery alien from Planet Fierce" persona we've come to expect from the showman, we're seeing an emotionally raw and exhausted man, uncomfortable in a cold, new-looking home and torn between the different roles he's forced to play in his very public life.

Droid more valuable than Nexus One or iPhone 3GS according to iSuppli

If teardowns are guilty titillation for the geek who likes to see must-have gadgets stripped to their component parts, iSuppli’s versions are the respectable analysis that leave us believing we’ve actually learned something important afterward. Latest across their bench is the Motorola DROID, and iSuppli reckon the Android smartphone costs Moto $179.11 in parts and a further $8.64 per handset to manufacture.

Interestingly, the most expensive component iSuppli found is the DROID’s 16GB microSD card, which costs $35 apiece. That’s followed by the pretty marvellous 3.7-inch LCD TFT display, at $17.75, just edging ahead of the capacitive touchscreen layer at $17.50.

Lady GaGa Exhausted!

BEING a workaholic is finally taking its toll on singer Lady GaGa.

The Telephone hitmaker has been forced to cancel a concert in India after she felt dizzy and passed out.

GaGa has been told by her doctors that she has irregular heartbeats and has been ordered to rest.

“Paramedics came to take care of me, and told me my heart-rate was irregular — a result of exhaustion and dehydration,” she wrote on her Twitter page.

“Can’t apologize enough for how sorry I am. I could hear my fans cheering from my dressing room, I begged everyone to let me go onstage.

“My stage has complicated mechanical elements, everyone was concerned I’d be in danger during the 2hr show, since I had passed out earlier. I am so devastated. I have performed with the flu, a cold, strep throat: I would never cancel a show just based on discomfort.

“I hope you can forgive me. I love my little monsters more than anything, you are everything to me. I will make up the performance on Jan 26.”

2AM releases their first MV teaser

With the D-day of their comeback quickly approaching, 2AM is wasting no time giving their fans a glimpse of their upcoming song and concept.

Photos of 2AM were revealed through their homepage, displaying a each member’s revolutionary look. As if their new appearances haven’t been garnering interest, a MV teaser was also released and it is definitely living up to the hype. Just based on the 30 seconds of the MV alone, the quartet exudes a much more mature and manlier image than that which was seen before.

Microsoft considering Windows Mobile 7 showcase at MWC 2010?

Only the other day we were fielding rumors that Windows Mobile 6.6 would be the best Microsoft could do at Mobile World Congress this coming February, when along come Bloomberg with “a person familiar with the matter” who claims the company are considering demonstrating Windows Mobile 7 at the cellularly-obsessed show. According to their source, Microsoft haven’t yet decided whether to put WM7 on the agenda; last we heard, the company intended to launch another interim version, Windows Mobile 6.6, which would add native support for capacitive touchscreens as found on the HTC HD2.

As you might expect, Microsoft themselves aren’t saying anything conclusive about either their show plans or their launch-schedule for the upcoming smartphone OS revision. ”We’re always working on future versions” said Microsoft spokesperson Debbie Anderson, “and have nothing new to announce.”

Fergie caught in a sandstorm as she shoots music video in desert

It was all hands on deck as a scantily clad Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas was caught up in a standstorm while on location.

The singer, 34, was with her fellow three bandmates in the Los Angeles desert when the wind picked up and started playing havoc with her hair and make-up.

Shooting of their new video had to be put on hold until the storm passed, with frantic production crew rushing to Fergie's aid and wrapping her in a dressing gown.

The front-woman was dressed in a sexy black robotic-themed leotard, complete with tussled hair and lashings of make-up.

Will 'Avatar' Win Big at Golden Globes?

Don't underestimate James Cameron.

That seems to be the feeling going into the Golden Globe Awards, which airs live Sunday night on NBC.

Cameron's blockbuster epic "Avatar" will be on a lot of people's minds, but so will the devastation in Haiti caused by Tuesday's massive earthquake.

Hollywood is doing its part with today's event "Golden Globes Making Our Globe Golden" at LA's House of Blues. For every celebrity that shows up, Platinum Publicity will make a donation toward relief efforts. The group is also auctioning off $6,000 gift bags and T-shirts signed by celebrities on eBay, with proceeds going to help Haiti.

On Thursday, black actresses CCH Pounder, one of the stars of "Avatar," and Lorraine Toussaint of TV's "Any Day Now," signed T-shirts. Toussaint, who is from the Caribbean, told ABC News she was able to locate some of her relatives in Haiti.

Britney Spears Loves That Body

Britney Spears is calling BS on reports that she hates her body.

We're glad she set the record straight, because we've been fans of it ever since we got that ... Baby One More Time poster for our dorm room in college.

We may be dating ourselves a bit with that reference, but the point remains that Britney Spears, just like anyone else, has no reason to hate her body.

That's why her official site is calling out recent celebrity gossip reports that she will "always hate" her body. Two words, Look magazine: Puh. Lease.

"See who's full of it," the pop star posted on Twitter after finding a feature in the tabloid that claims to have interviewed the star about her body issues.

Microsoft Warns of IE Flaw That Compromised Google

New evidence points to a previously unknown vulnerability in Internet Explorer as the hole through which criminals recently attacked Google and other companies, rather than a known, but unpatched vulnerability in Adobe Acrobat and Reader, as had previously been claimed.

Microsoft has issued an advisory for the new vulnerability in IE listing every currently supported version except IE5 on Windows 2000 as vulnerable. As described by Microsoft: "It is possible under certain conditions for [an] invalid pointer to be accessed after an object is deleted. In a specially-crafted attack, in attempting to access a freed object, Internet Explorer can be caused to allow remote code execution."

Google Hacked the Chinese Hackers Right Back

One of the cooler stories out the whole Google-China debacle is that Google hacked the hackers. It "began a secret counteroffensive," breaking into a computer in Taiwan, gathering evidence the attacks originated from mainland China, possibly orchestrated by the government.

Google's delta force found evidence that the hackers had attacked 33 other companies, like Adobe, and that the onslaught actually came from China, not Taiwan. More to the point, "much of the evidence, including the sophistication of the attacks, strongly suggested an operation run by Chinese government agencies, or at least approved by them." Unfortunately, Google can't prove the Chinese government's involvement 100 percent, which is why the Obama administration is pussy-footing around the issue.

Still, it's pretty awesome: If you hack Google, they will hack your ass right back.

Jackie Chan Targets Kids with Low-Budget "Spy"

It's been over 30 years since Jackie Chan supplanted Bruce Lee as film's reigning martial-arts superstar.

Now in his 50s, Chan tries to broaden his audience with the kid-oriented "The Spy Next Door," appealing directly to the "Kung Fu Panda" crowd with mixed results. Directed by Brian Levant of "Are We There Yet?" fame, "Spy" is entertaining in spots but too obviously low-budget. The film faces so-so returns upon its Friday release through Lionsgate.

The opening features clips from some of Chan's recent films before speeding briskly through a nicely-staged fight pitting the star, playing CIA agent Bob Ho, against villain Poldark (Magnus Scheving). Ho's athleticism and James Bond-like gadgets play perfectly to Chan's strengths and fans should enjoy seeing how the star has adapted old routines for new purposes.

PV for Show Luo’s Upcoming “Xi Guan Jiu Hao” leaked online!

Taiwanese singer, actor, and host Show Luo just released his album titled “Rashomon” today, and has already promoted his latest album with his slick-looking “The Leading Role” dance music video. Already, the popular singer has his eyes on releasing the slower ballad “Xi Guan Jiu Hao” as his second release, as can be seen from a leaked promo video that has been leaked online.

The video from the leaked PV, besides obviously being a change of pace from the much faster beats of the first MV, also features a completely different environment outside. Not only that, but it clearly takes place on the other side of the world in New York, which also explains what Show was doing there. Why is another matter, which is a topic of discussion for another day. In the mean time, check out the latest leaked PV of Show’s latest slow ballad, courtesy of TaiwanMV.

Gisele Bundchen Donates $1.5 Million To Haiti Relief Effort

Supermodel mom Gisele Bundchen has donated $1.5 million to the earthquake relief effort in Haiti, The Boston Globe said Friday. The benevolent beauty — who has lent her famous form to brands like London Fog, Rampage, and Victoria’s Secret — wrote a $1.5 million check to the Red Cross to help Haiti recover from a devastating quake that rocked the island this week.

Way to go, G!

Just days ago, Gisele topped a list of the world’s highest-paid supermodels, earning a reported $35 million in 2009.

Is Miley Cyrus Wearing an Engagement Ring?

Miley Cyrus was spotted yesterday by photogs in Hollywood wearing a very suspicious sparkly piece of jewelry on the fourth finger of her left hand — and tongues are already wagging. Could she be engaged to Aussie co-star Liam Hemsworth, 19,whom she met just last June on the set of her new film The Last Song, a coming-of-age movie about a rebellious teen? Hmm! Sounds familiar! She has just returned from Australia, where she reportedly met Liam’s family — could that have been a prelude to an engagement?

But this wouldn’t be the first time Miley’s made a dramatic move that’s highly age-inappropriate.

DigitalRise X9 multitouch tablet includes Intel Atom, Windows 7; priced at $780

There’s another tablet on the table: the DigitalRise X9 multitouch-screen tablet has made its way into the fold. With its strong specs, it could be a strong competitor - if it weren’t for the hefty price tag.

With tablets becoming the hot ticket item of the year, DigitalRise has implemented quite a bit beneath that 10.2-inch color TFT touchscreen, including:

Video game sales explode in industry's best month ever

After a 2009 dominated by lower year-over-year monthly sales figures, the video game industry turned things around in a huge way just in time for the holidays, recording its best month ever, reported analyst firm The NPD Group on Thursday.

According to NPD, the industry turned in U.S. sales of $5.53 billion in December, up 4 percent from $5.32 billion a year earlier. While it could not have been any more of a relief to the companies in the video games business that they had finally turned in a month of year-over-year growth, the December results were especially impressive given that in December 2008 the industry for the first time surpassed the $5 billion mark for a single month.

But despite the fantastic December, the nine straight previous months of lower sales meant that total 2009 industry sales came in 8 percent below those of 2008, the best year the industry has yet seen.

Twitter’s Answer To Facebook Connect

Twitter is preparing to launch a new set of tools that will let third party websites easily integrate Twitter features directly into their web sites and services, multiple sources have confirmed. In a nutshell, this is their response to the massively popular Facebook Connect.

Facebook Connect was first announced in May 2008 (Google and MySpace announced similar projects at the same time).

Facebook Connect became generally available later in 2008, and it hasn’t looked back since. Today, Facebook says 80,000 websites have added Facebook Connect, and 60 million Facebook users engage with Facebook connect on these third party websites each month. For many sites, like our own CrunchBase, it’s the only way to create an account and log in.

Facebook Connect is attractive to a lot of smaller sites simply because it’s so easy to implement. They’ve created a number of widgets that bring Facebook features directly to third party sites, and integration is easy. You can find some of these here on TechCrunch.

Jessica Biel: Justin Timberlake Relationship Is "Precious"

Good luck getting Jessica Biel to dish on her on-and-off relationship with singer Justin Timberlake.

"I don't want to talk about it," she says in the February issue of Vogue. "I don't feel the need to clear anything up. It's the most precious thing that I have in my life, and I care about it so much that I don't care about what anyone says or thinks. I have just not addressed it in any real way, and I'm not going to. It's mine. And I really like that about it."

The two -- who began dating in 2007 -- have endured their highs and lows.

In September, Us Weekly reported that Timberlake told pals "it's over."

At the same time, he was spotted dirty-dancing with a tall blonde in a short black dress at a NYC club. Timberlake, 28, and Biel, 27, are rarely photographed together.

Fahrenheit shows no jealousy as they go their separate ways

In regards to rumors about the group being on bad terms and news of them disbanding, Fahrenheit responds, “We’re used to it, so we might as well not respond. A group will always go through these sort of things.” It is a fact that the popularity of each member is different, but all four members express, “This is good competition. We will only know what’s good and bad when there is comparison.” They emphasize that they won’t be jealous of each other even when they work as solo artists in the future. Fahrenheit will be releasing their 4th album in August and after that, they will have only one more album left to complete their contract.

Wu Chun, the rising movie star

Wu Chun not only sings, stars in dramas and movies, but also owns a fitness center. Aaron Yan compliments, “He has his thoughts on things and is a person with principle.” Although Wu Chun loves to eat, he still manages to keep a fit body, but Jiro Wang reveals, “One time when we were promoting in Singapore, I asked him to save me two ribs, but in the end, I only saw leftover bones.” Just several days ago at their autographing session, when they spoke of food, Jiro made fun of Wu Chun, and called him a “pig” saying, “You pretend to be a ‘pig’ (play dumb) and swallow a tiger (this year is tiger year).”

Nokia shows off Symbian^4 UI concept proposal

Although Symbian^3 isn’t released yet, Nokia is already working on Symbian^4, and it recently presented a UI concept proposal for it.

Based on a Qt framework, Symbian^4 should simplify the S60 user experience by bringing renewed layouts, “free placement of Homescreen widgets”, “context menu support for list items”, four user-facing libraries (Contacts, Applications, Music and Photos), improved task switcher, redesigned Control Panel and so on.

Below you have some screenshots of the Symbian^4 UI concept proposal (the final version of the new OS may not look like this):
