Katie Holmes “Glee” Guest Appearance

Katie full of Glee?

Mrs. Cruise is set to sing and dance her way onto TV’s hottest show.

In news that’s sure to leave Gleeks gabbing, Katie Holmes is negotiating a deal that will see her featured in a five-part guest arc during the second season og TV’s white-hot musical-comedy, Glee. The Dawson’s Creek alum is close with actress Dianna Agron — who plays meanie cheerleader Quinn Fabray on the show on the hit series. With Dianna’s help, Katie’s managed to build a friendship with Glee creator Ryan Murphy, which could turn into a new gig for Katie, according to a new tabloid report.

A TV tipster reveals on the pages of the July 12 issue of The National Enquirer: “Katie is finalizing a deal to join the cast for a limited storyline next season. Katie’s film career has stalled, and she’s desperately needs a career boost. She’s hoping a stint on Glee will jumpstart her standing in Hollywood.”

Paris Hilton marijuana charges dropped in SAfrica

A court in South Africa has dropped a marijuana-smoking case against Paris Hilton.

The socialite appeared late Friday in a FIFA World Cup courtroom after being arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana at a quarterfinal match between Brazil and the Netherlands.

The authorities dropped the charges against Hilton, after her co-accused, Jennifer Rovero, "acknowledged to be in possession of cannabis, and pleaded guilty," said Brig. Sally De Beer, a spokeswoman for South African police.

Rovero, 31, from New York, was sentenced to a fine of 1,000 rand ($130) or 30 days imprisonment, De Beer said.

A publicist for Hilton said the incident was a "misunderstanding."

"Paris Hilton was questioned today by police in South Africa on allegations of smoking marijuana," a publicist for Hilton, Dawn Miller, said in a statement.

"However I can confirm that the incident was a complete misunderstanding and it was actually another person in the group who did it," the statement said. "The case has been dropped against Paris and no charges will be made."

When told the case had been dropped, Hilton said "thank you" and left the courtroom.

Hilton wrote on Twitter later: "Hey guys, there's a lot of crazy rumors going around. Just want you all to know the truth. Everything is completely fine. I was not charged or arrested, cause I didn't do anything."

She said she was helping police with their investigation.

Leaked Windows Phone 7 smartphone from HTC: 4.5″ Super AMOLED display and 1.5GHz processor

As with any leak, we suggest you approach this with a healthy amount of skepticism, but if a post made to PConline is to be believed, this upcoming Windows Phone 7 handset from HTC — the HD3 — is going to be an absolute beast. We mean, take a look at the purported specs:
  • 4.5″ WXGA Super AMOLED multi-touch display
  • 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash
  • 720p HD video recording
  • 1080p HD playback
  • Wi-Fi / Bluetooth
  • 3G / 4G connectivity
  • 32GB microSD support
  • 1GB RAM / 1GB ROM
  • 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor
  • 1800 mAh battery
  • 115mm x 65mm x 10mm

Like we said, this is strictly a rumor, but how great would it be if it all came true?

Apple iPhone 4 plagued by 3G data connectivity issues?

A voluminous thread on Apple’s support forums seems to suggest that a growing number of iPhone 4 users are experiencing problems with 3G connectivity. According to the reports, folks with an iPhone 4 are experiencing slow or even non-existent 3G connectivity in areas where 3G signal is present. The problem is not solely due to AT&T as a side-by-side comparison with an iPhone 3G or 3GS reveals that the iPhone 3G/3GS has a solid 3G connection while the iPhone 4 is on EDGE or is crawling along at less than 30 kbps on a supposed 3G connection. For some folks, the issue is intermittent with periods of good connectivity followed by periods of poor connectivity. If anyone else notices this unusual phenomenon, give us a shout in the comments with your experiences.

Motorola Droid Rules Android

Motorola’s Droid is the most popular phone among Android users, followed by HTC Hero, while Google’s Nexus One ranks tenth on the list, according to a monthly metrics report from mobile advertising firm AdMob. AdMob has ranked the top ten Android smartphones by market share.

The data is based on 12.7 million Android phones in the AdMob network in May. It’s also why the HTC Evo, released in the first week of June, is missing from the mix.

About 21 percent Android users have the Droid, while 16 percent users own the HTC Hero. Just 2 percent of Android phone users have Google’s Nexus One phone, says AdMob.

Motorola launched the Droid in November 2009 and made it available exclusively on Verizon Wireless. And despite the gaggle of Android phones launched every month, the Droid has been holding strong.

Life and death of Microsoft Kin: the inside story

Since our piece on Wednesday, we've had more trusted sources step forward to fill in some blanks and clarify the story behind the amazingly swift fall from grace that Microsoft's Kin phones have experienced since their launch just a few weeks ago. It's a fascinating tale, and we wanted to share everything we've learned.

Project Pink -- the initiative that would ultimately become Kin -- began life under the direction of free-spirited exec J Allard even before Microsoft had acquired Danger in early 2008, though the company knew full well that it would ultimately need Danger's cloud computing expertise to execute on the vision. As it turns out, Danger's intellectual property was more important to Microsoft than its manpower, which might go a long way toward explaining stories we've heard in the past of Danger's Palo Alto headquarters looking like a ghost town not long after the purchase. Initially, both ODMs and carriers were tripping over each other for the opportunity to be involved and launch the product; ultimately, Sharp and Verizon were selected as the headline partners. Knowing Allard and his track record, the vision was probably grandiose and easy to fall in love with -- and needless to say, no one had been quoting a mid-2010 launch back then.

Ashley Greene Moving To New York City

Ashley Greene is Big Apple-bound.

In an interview with the July issue of monthly fashion glossy ASOS Magazine, the gorgeous Twilight hottie reveals that she is looking for an apartment in New York City.

Ashley is reportedly in the middle of a feud with neighbors in her North Hollywood apartment building over her unruly fox terrier, but the actress cites the evasive glare of the paparazzi for driving her out of Los Angeles. Ashley and her Twilight co-stars are constantly hounded by snapping photographers and she hopes to avoid the attention by moving to NYC, where strict laws prohibit paps from aggressively pursuing celebs for photos.

Jay Chou wants to be remembered for being "cool"

Jay Chou seems to be in a great mood these days in contrast to the bad luck-Jay who was troubled by D-list female stars, as well as box office and TV ratings woes just a few months ago. Not only he made headlines with the epic Double-J reunion, his latest album and the trailer of his first Hollywood movie have also been getting excellent response.

Sony Music held a press conference earlier this week to announce that his album, The Era, has sold over 1 million copies since its release, making it the best selling Chinese album in the first half of 2010. Jay Chou was in Beijing to celebrate the great news and also premiered the latest music video off his album, “自導自演 (Self Directed and Acted)”. He said, “(I) can’t dance as well as other people, so (my) car has to be cooler than the others.”

As for sales figures in Taiwan, JVR Music announced that the album has sold 120,000 copies in just one month, and stressed they achieved this without any repackaged version. Jay Chou was asked if they are suggesting Show Luo’s 150,000 copies of Rashomon was done by releasing multiple repackaged versions. He said, “After all, Show Luo has debuted for a longer period of time than I did. He works very hard. If (the numbers) are real, I’m very happy.”

He added, “The two of us actually went out together yesterday. He was in Beijing to film a commercial. We happened to stay at the same hotel.” Show Luo’s manager responded, “The record industry is under great difficulty, placement is not the most important anymore, it is rather the effort of the two (singers) in trying to present something good to the audience.” Although Jay Chou’s “Honest Campaign” (of not buying charts and not reporting faux figures) hasn’t had much success, he said, “I don’t mind that it’s not effective, as long as people remember that I started it, it’s very cool.”

Barbie Hsu shows off some skin in her new movie

Strange but true, Barbie Hsu plays a "perverted killer" in her upcoming movie Reign of Assassins (劍雨), which is set for release this fall. New stills from the John Woo movie show a scantily clad Da S waiting for her prey. Her character is said to be a killer with quick moves and has a pungent personality. In one particular scene, she says, “What’s good with being a man, it’s better to be a woman, because toying with men is more fun.” Reign of Assassins features 12 A-list stars from across Asia including Jung Woo Sung, Michelle Yeoh and Wang Xue Qi. It is expected to hit theaters this September.

Johnny Depp won't be playing 'Doctor Who' on the big screen: Good or bad news?

For the last few days, there has been much chatter in the blogosphere — and in the area-around-my-office-o-sphere — that Johnny Depp might star in a big screen version of the cult BBC show Doctor Who. Well, according to i09, that ain’t going to happen. The sci fi website quoted a BBC rep as saying there are “no plans” for a Doctor Who movie, and that any talk is “pure speculation.” (BBC did not respond to EW’s calls for comment.)

I have mixed feelings about this news. On the one hand, the show only recently installed a new Doctor in the TARDIS in the bow tie-sporting, and rather good, shape of Matt Smith. On the other, you can’t help but wonder what Depp would have done with this most eccentric of characters. Just one scene which featured him and K-9 would be worth the price of admission alone.

What do you think? Would you like to see Johnny Depp play the lead role in a big screen Doctor Who?

TMZ now reporting Elin will get $100 million

The perpetual Elin Nordegren-Tiger Woods divorce settlement wheel of fortune continued to spin today, with one new report setting the arrow at $100 million. That's a fair pile of coins, but nowhere close to the $750 million figure that's floating about from other sources. TMZ is saying today that it has solid proof of the $100 million number, but they're not naming sources either, so take from that what you will. And by the way, the $100 million doesn't include child support. TMZ:

As one source with direct knowledge of the terms of the divorce tells TMZ, "She'll be getting close to $100,000,000."
There have been reports Elin would score $750 million, but we have confirmed that figure is wrong. Indeed, as we first reported, Tiger is not even worth $750 million. We're told his net worth is somewhere between $500 and $600 million.
The $100 million is way more than Elin would have received under the prenup.
Sources say Elin will receive child support, but we do not know the specific amount.

And the houses; don't forget she gets a couple of the houses, including the new Jupiter Island mansion.

Apple nixes 10% restocking fee on iPhone 4 returns

Computerworld is reporting that Apple has temporarily suspend their standard 10% restocking fee for returns of the iPhone 4. Computerworld writes:

An AppleCare support representative who gave her name as “Erica” confirmed that the restocking fee had been ditched. The restocking fee is also central to at least one of several lawsuits that consumers have filed this week against Apple, alleging that the company shipped defective iPhone 4s to customers.

Samsung Epic 4G (for Sprint) appears in promo video

Announced by Sprint earlier this week (as North America’s first 4G phone with full QWERTY keyboard), the Samsung Epic 4G has appeared in a promo video that (obviously) showcases some of its most important features, like the 4 inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, the front-facing camera, six-axis motion sensor, 3D graphics, HD video recording, and the premium content from Sprint.

The video doesn’t disclose the price of Samsung Epic 4G, but I expect Sprint to sell the new smartphone for $200 on contract (probably after rebates).

Show Lo Films Ad; Fear of Ending Lineage, $50 Million Insured Sacks

Show "Xiao Zhu (Little Pig)" Lo was in Beijing to film a commercial for instant noodles, joking commented that the director sees him as "Jackie Chan of the Music Industry" because in the commercial, after editing, he'll be flying and jumping from building to building, besides having to jump around constantly during the filming, he had to do some hurdling/hopping over things. For this, his management had especially insured his crotch area, $50 million for his "sacks," because he's an only son, so they were in fear that his "little little pig" would accidentally get injured.

A No-Go for a $200 Million House

The script for the ad was set that he'd be at a concert, and suddenly catching the smell of the instant noodles, and he darts out to find the source of the scent. In one scene he jumped over railings about 120 cm high, and in case of "injuring sacks," they had insured $50 million, but the management expressed, "This is just normal accident precautions, no one should think too much about it."

New Charlie St. Cloud Trailer Shows Off Zac Efron's Acting Chops

The second trailer for Charlie St. Cloud with Zac Efron is out, and the former song-and-dance man is really upping his drama game.

Following his turn for the serious in 2008's Me and Orson Welles, Zac continues to show us that he has the acting chops and leading-man appeal to successfully shed his tween heartthrob status...Though we're sure there are critics out there who'd hate to admit that.

But check it out for yourself and let us know what you think. Will Zac forever be known as the kid from High School Musical, or will people come to see that franchise as the launching pad for a serious thespian?

Best Buy Wants to Fire Employee For His iPhone 4 vs. HTC EVO Video

The iPhone 4 vs. HTC EVO video making the rounds has gotten 1.7 million views, but when Best Buy found out it was their employee that made the video, they weren't so much amused as angry.

Corporate asked them to take the video down, but the employee Brian Maupin declined, saying that it didn't mention Best Buy anywhere. (It also didn't mention Best Buy in the description either.) But Best Buy suspended him, and now might be fired, claims NBC Action News.

Will Pan confesses falling in love many times, doesn't mind worshipping money

With blind date television shows currently in vogue, even quite a number of celebrities from Hong Kong and Taiwan have become loyal fans. Last week, while in Shenzhen attending a fan club event as a beverage spokesperson, Taiwanese pop star Will Pan divulged that he himself would love to go on a blind date show. Moreover, Will hopes that he could find a girl who worships money and has a nice reputation, while he stating frankly, "I also hope that I can be with a girl whom has a stable career and will have little struggle for a decade."

Divulged having fallen in love 7-8 times

Will expressed that he hopes to have his new album released by December of this year and said, "My feelings are more heartfelt now, and the love songs (on the new album) will bring out my story. Through my songs, I show my feelings of me going through love. First love, lost love, one-sided love, declarations of love, it's all there." When asked if he's been in love numerous times, Will divulged, "Seven or eight times in my life, I'm getting close to thirty years old. That's normal at that age." When the interviewer pushed on and asked if he has watched blind date television programs, Will said, "Yes, I have. It's because I haven't been on a blind date, and I want to see how other people go on blind dates. Every time the girl turns down the guy (lit., extinguishes the flames), I get so worked up! Actually, I want to go on a blind date show, and I hope the girl doesn't turn me down and gives me some faith."

Is Last Airbender the Worst Movie Ever?

The Last Airbender is "dull," "dreadful," and, lowest of low blows, "like a Care Bears movie."

Well, all right, hardly any movie gets perfect reviews. But has any film ever gotten so many bad reviews?

The short answer is Battlefield Earth—meaning, yes, other films have been blasted good by critics. But, boy, oh boy, in Hollywood's summer of unloved movies, The Last Airbender, which opened Thursday, is getting some historic hate.

As of this morning, its Metacritic rating stood at 20, "good" for a spot on the review-crunching site's all-time low scores list. (Airbender's down there between Digimon: The Movie and the Lisa Kudrow rap classic, Marci X.) Worse, outside of Ashton Kutcher's and Katherine Heigl's Killers, Airbender is the only 2010 wide release on the Metacritic's list of shame.

Things are no better at Rotten Tomatoes, where its Tomatometer reading is a barely there 9 percent, which is actually up from yesterday's 6 percent. (For the record, our own Luke Y. Thompson assigned the "most boring summer-action epic in ages" a D+.)

Even before the bad reviews came along, it's been a rough ride for The Last Airbender, which couldn't call itself Avatar: The Last Airbender, like the animated series it's based on, because of some little James Cameron project: Avatar-something.

Trent Reznor To Score Facebook Movie. “It’s Really F*cking Good. And Dark!”

I’ve never been quite sure what to make of the upcoming Facebook movie, The Social Network. On one hand, the talent behind the camera is pretty amazing. The screenplay was written by Aaron Sorkin (of West Wing, and A Few Good Men fame). And it’s being directed by David Fincher (of Fight Club and Seven fame). On the other hand, it’s a movie about Facebook. And the trailer is a bit cheesy. But some news today may have put me over the edge towards being very intrigued by it.

As he announces on the official Nine Inch Nails site, Trent Reznor will be doing the score for the film. It seems as if there’s entirely too much talent behind this movie now for it to fail — or at least, for it to be awful.

Writes Reznor:

I was planning on taking some time off after the continual waves of touring that ended last fall and spend this year experimenting around with what would become How To Destroy Angels and some new NIN. Well, that plan didn’t work out so well. David Fincher started inquiring about my interest in scoring his upcoming film, The Social Network. Yeah, the movie about the founding of Facebook. I’ve always loved David’s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned. Atticus Ross and I have been on a creative roll so I asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on.

Bill: China Net censorship could start trade war

Half a year ago, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lauded Internet freedom and criticized China in a high-profile speech in Washington, D.C. A few weeks later, a Global Internet Freedom Caucus on Capitol Hill was formed.

But the Chinese authorities weren't exactly paying attention. Since Clinton's speech, China has reaffirmed its commitment to state censorship, required online map providers to obtain licenses and host their images inside the country, blocked Foursquare, and announced new rules for media companies. Earlier this week, China made Google rethink how it could move some search operations to Hong Kong.

If anything, China's Internet restrictions have grown ever-tighter. In March, when Google began publishing a daily dashboard of China service availability, mobile and Web search was completely accessible. As of early July, both are partially blocked.

Jack's back! Johnny Depp has his dreadlocks on again as he films Pirates of the Caribbean sequel On Stranger Tides

The countdown to the eagerly-awaited fourth Pirates Of The Caribbean film has begun after Johnny Depp started filming in Hawaii.

The 47-year-old was back in his battered leathers, boots, bandanna and dreadlocked wig to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in On Stranger Tides.

The actor was reportedly offered a $50million salary to reprise his role as the the seafaring hero for a fourth time.

Notably absent from the third sequel is Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.

Fans will know Bloom's character Will is trapped sailing the Netherworld after being resurrected following his fatal fight with Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) in the last movie At World's End.

Instead, audiences will be treated to another stunning female co-star for Depp - Spanish actress Penelope Cruz, 36.

The film will be something of a reunion for Cruz and Depp, who played lovers in 2001 film Blow.

Britney Spears: The Crazy Returns!

OMFG. The dazed, haggard Britney Spears of old apparently emerged yesterday in L.A. Wow. How we missed crazy pants ... and the fact that she doesn't wear any. Okay, she's technically got shorts on - and a bra, oddly enough - but come on. Those things would probably be too big on her sons (who we hope never read this).

Check out Britney below, with a bodyguard trying to steer her in the right direction, looking either irate, confused or just out to lunch. Starbucks in hand, natch. The knee-high socks are a great touch ...

Britney's patterned bra and colorful, cute underwear sure caught people’s attention, but not as much as her unflattering facial expressions and growls of frustration. Once again mired in controversy about her child-rearing and her relationship woes, Britney’s odd behavior and frazzled appearance point to continued inner turmoil.

Earlier in the week, social workers made a visit to her home as part of an investigation launched amid allegations by a former bodyguard that she abused her kids. Is she able to keep it together? Is she stable enough to handle life without her dad's supervision? The Britney Spears pictures below don't make a strong case ...

Lindsay Lohan Punched by Waitress on 24th Birthday

Like any normal girl, Lindsay Lohan celebrated her 24th birthday by club-hopping with close friends, chugging Red Bulls like it's going out of style and, of course, getting punched in the face by a waitress.

The [insert 'Mean Girls' or "troubled" here] actress was out at club Voyeur in LA early Friday morning when this happened: "A waitress just hit me," she announced on Twitter. "Punched me for no reason."

While she is famous for oversharing and, at times, exaggerating on the micro-blogging site, Lohan's bizarre claim may hold some truth to it. She said there was "no reason" for the alleged attack, but an eyewitness told Usmagazine.com that the waitress in question was angry with Lohan because she was hanging out with Doug Reinhardt, Paris Hilton's ex.

"The waitress has a history with [Reinhardt]," the witness said. "She was jealous, and out of nowhere, the waitress punched her in the face! Doug didn't want any part of it and went to the other side of the booth. Lohan ran out."

Why Apple's iPhone 4 Update Won't Fix Your Reception Problem

This graphic shows why some people experience the iPhone 4 signal drop problems while others haven't been able to reproduce it. It also explains why Apple's incoming software update—which promises more accurate signal bars—won't fix the antenna problem.

Which is sad, because I was hoping for a real fix to the antenna problem itself, not just the signal display (I want this phone badly, but I want it to work well at all times). After talking with some wireless engineers, it seems that this is not going to be the case. Michael Anderson, who used to work at Motorola's FCC testing lab, points out that "it's a fundamental flaw that can only be fixed through a redesign. If that is redone, all the FCC will have to be completed again. This may be a long slow process to fix."

3 lessons HP hopefully learned from the iPad

The HP webOS Slate is one-step closer to the market now that HP officially owns Palm. It has a real chance to be the iPad-alternative of choice when it launches later this year. Hopefully HP engineers and designers have been taking notes about the iPad from the beginning because even though the iPad is selling like Girl Scout cookies, it’s far from perfect.

The Apple branding alone is part of the successful launch, but HP is, well, HP and a major player in the consumer market with deeper distribution channels than even Apple. If any one company can stand up to Apple in the tablet space, it’s HP — but only if they take advantage of learning from Apple’s mistakes and success.

Apple releases statement about iPhone reception, fix due in “a few weeks”

Apple has released a statement regarding reception issues with the iPhone 4. The statement, which is in letter format, cites the “formula” Apple uses “to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display” being “totally wrong,” and the fact that “gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars.” We’ve got the full release for you after the break. Apple said a free software update will be coming in “a few weeks” that will allegedly provide a fix. What do you think?

Jay Chou considers sequel to The Green Hornet

The Taiwanese star open to a sequel if movie performs well at the box office

Not contented with just conquering the music charts, Jay Chou sets his sights on making it big on the silver screen.

The Taiwanese prince of pop was in Beijing yesterday for a press conference for his new album, which has already sold over one million copies in Asia.

During the press conference, reporters asked him about his movie plans after filming his first Hollywood feature, The Green Hornet. To that, Jay revealed that he is working on a sequel to his first movie, Secret.

Google Music Launching Alongside Android 3.0 This Fall/Winter & more

According to Android product manager Gaurav Jain, Google Music will be launched concurrently with Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) at the end of this year. Presumably just in time to battle iTunes Live.

Apple and Google's race to stream content from the cloud has never really been a question of if so much as of when, and today's report from Israeli financial paper Calcalist gives us the clearest indicator yet of when we'll actually start being able to take advantage. Nevermind that mSpot already beat Google to a cloud-based Android music service; mass penetration won't happen until the big dogs step up with their own platforms.

Jain unfortunately didn't offer up any other details about what form Google Music would take, although we've got our own hunches. We do know, though, that we're just a few months away from finding out.

Nokia: the fight begins now, Symbian^4 N-Series device later

Nokia's newly appointed Mobile Solutions chief, Anssi Vanjoki, has penned an impassioned post over at Nokia Conversations today where he sets out his perspective on the company's current position and future challenges. Describing the Finnish phone maker as "a challenger now," rather than an incumbent, Vanjoki wants to introduce a "laser focus on quality," with his two central aims being to reclaim Nokia's reputation for high-end devices and to re-energize a flagging fan base. He specifically namedrops Ricky Cadden -- who yesterday shut down Symbian-Guru because he'd lost faith with the company -- and clearly considers grassroots support like that an important aspect of how Nokia's success will be judged.
