Robsten Sneak Beach Date Before Public Partying!

Undercover lovers Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were spotted out together in Venice Beach yesterday, escaping the shutterbugs and enjoying a private date night. Take that, all you Robsten haters!

While everyone seems so hell-bent on having Rob hook up with the likes of Katy Perry (just because they're photographed at an event, please), a source spills to us that Robsten was dining at Gjelina restaurant on Abbot Kinney before scoping out the fab A. Kinney Court opening next door.

Says our insider who attended the party:

"Robert and Kristen were eating next door and peaked in the window after their dinner as the party was wrapping up."

We all know that Robsten likes to keep a low profile, so showing up to an event opening together where Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Olivia Wilde also were in attendance totally isn't their scene.

But the concept fashion boutique and eyewear store totally suits Kristen's chiller style, so we know why they would take a pause to check it out. Atta girl, you tell your man to make some time for window shopping!

"Kristen was wearing an old white T-shirt with her hair in a ponytail," our eyes tell us. "Rob was wearing jeans, a tee and a dark coat.

"It looked like they were on a nice stroll through the neighborhood. They seemed really just into hanging together."

So did R & K opt for some PDA since not too many people were looking?

"They weren't holding hands, but were really sweet with each other."

We all know that R.Pattz's night didn't end there. He went out to celebrate his friend Shannon Woodward's birthday at Dimples karaoke bar alongside Katy Perry.

Rob showed up around 11:15, plenty of time to drop K.Stew off where she needed to be. The A. Kinney opening ended around 10. Sweet that R.Pattz wanted to spare his truer emotions from the waiting paps he knew would be documenting his every move later on.

A spokesperson for Gjelina declined to comment about Robsten's romantic meal saying, "We wouldn't be able to tell you about that."

A rep for Kristen also kept mum saying, "We don't have a comment, but thank you."

We're just glad the couple got in some quality relaysh time! Love it, or love it?

It's utterly and truly Robsten-style amour at work, every angle you look at it, as we trust you will.

It's A Very Gaga Christmas! Enjoy Lady Gaga's Hits As Christmas Songs

Lady Gaga is way too busy to make a holiday record. She's already got her scandalous Christmas song, "Christmas Tree." She's got a smash album (The Fame: Monster) on the charts, she released a groundbreaking video ("Bad Romance"), she participated in a musical art installation and, to top it all off, she performed for the friggin' Queen. So, no, she does not have time to belt out "Silent Night" (though that would be awesome).

Luckily, the folks at Landline TV have filled the void, albeit in a parody/satire fashion. The New York comedy troupe's latest video is a pretty funny rendering of what a Lady Gaga Christmas album would look and sound like. You get non-existent classics like "Bad Snowmans," "Love Sleigh" and "Snow Pants." Well done, guys. Check out the video (with some extra Taylor-Swift-parody added) below.

Will Microsoft and Apple Team Up to Fight Google?

It looks like Apple might soon have a new best friend: Microsoft, at least if the introduction of an iPhone app for Microsoft's Bing "decision engine" is the first sign of a new trend.

You will remember that Apple and Google used to be joined at the iPhone and browser, with Google providing popular apps for the iPhone and a default search engine for the Safari browser. Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt even sat on Apple's board of directors.

While the Google iPhone apps still remain--and are widely used in business--the relationship is in tatters, as Google has begun competing with its former friend across a wide front. Schmidt, under pressure, resigned from the Apple board.

Apple has also appears to have kept Google Latitude away from becoming an iPhone app and may be delaying the Google Maps Navigation app from an iPhone appearance. Both are important mobile business tools, but only on Android.

For business users, I believe the teaming of Microsoft and Apple could be a good thing, though unlikely to break the back of Google's plan for domination of the Internet. The big hope is that Apple will simply help Microsoft improve.

For example:

Microsoft's Bing services are not, today, as good as what Google offers. Bing's search not as comprehensive, Bing's maps not as detailed, and Bing's approach too aimed at selling stuff rather than answering questions. But, Bing is still a better attempt than Microsoft has shown to date.

I know this is, today, a weak argument. Yet, if Microsoft and Apple decided to go after Google together, the battle could become quite intense. The two might also be able to spark the anti-trust action that would put some limits on Google's ambitions.

There is one area where Microsoft may already top Google: Privacy.

A top Firefox executive recently responded to what many saw as Google CEO Schmidt's pooh-poohing of privacy concerns by recommending users choose Microsoft's Bing instead

For Apple, recent Google actions show how quickly things change, with Google now seemingly ready to do battle with Apple across the marketplace. Google's Android smart phone OS is launching a wave of iPhone competitors. Google's Chrome browser competes with Safari. The Chrome OS competes with Mac OS in some areas, particularly tablets. And today's rumors of a Google netbook can't be terribly comforting in Cupertino, either.

On the basis that "my enemy's enemy is my friend," Apple and Microsoft could find that competing with Google requires both their efforts, with Microsoft able to provide web applications that Apple doesn't want to build. (Or does it, since Apple has been making some moves on the mapping front?)

This is all very speculative at this point, but competition is a good thing and, working together, Apple and Microsoft may be able to take the fight to Google in ways not previously possible.

Firefox, Adobe top buggiest software list

Firefox was the application that had the most reported vulnerabilities this year, while holes in Adobe software more than tripled from a year ago, according to statistics compiled by Qualys, a vulnerability management provider.

Qualys tallied 102 vulnerabilities that were found in Firefox this year, up from 90 last year. The numbers are based on running totals in the National Vulnerability Database

However, the high number of Firefox vulnerabilities doesn't necessarily mean the Web browser actually has the most bugs; it just means it has the most reported holes. Because the software is open source, all holes are publicly disclosed, whereas proprietary software makers, like Adobe and Microsoft, typically only publicly disclose holes that were found by researchers outside the company, and not ones discovered internally, Qualys Chief Technology Officer Wolfgang Kandek said late on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Adobe took the second-place spot from Microsoft this year. The number of vulnerabilities in Adobe programs rose from 14 last year to 45 this year, while those in Microsoft software dropped from 44 to 41, according to Qualys. Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and Microsoft Office together had 30 vulnerabilities.

A shift in focus

The numbers illustrate the trend of attackers turning their focus away from operating systems and toward applications, Kandek said.

"Operating systems have become more stable and harder to attack and that's why attackers are migrating to applications, he said. "Adobe is a huge focus for attacks now, around 10 times more than Microsoft Office. However, other widely used targets like Internet Explorer and Firefox are still far from secure."

Research from F-Secure earlier this year provides further evidence that holes in Adobe applications are being targeted more than Microsoft apps. During the first three months of 2009, F-Secure discovered 663 targeted attack files, the most popular type being PDFs at nearly 50 percent, followed by Microsoft Word at nearly 40 percent, Excel at 7 percent, and PowerPoint at 4.5 percent.

That compared with Word representing nearly 35 percent of all 1,968 targeted attacks in 2008, followed by Reader at more than 28 percent, Excel at nearly 20 percent, and PowerPoint at nearly 17 percent.

As a result, Adobe needs to respond the way Microsoft did in 2002 when it launched its Trustworthy Computing initiative, and make securing its software a company-wide priority, researchers say. F-Secure even recommended that people stop using Reader and use an alternative PDF reader.

Adobe has taken some action, announcing in May that it would release its security updates on a regular schedule, quarterly and coinciding with every third Microsoft Patch Tuesday.

Another study released this week focuses on which applications are the riskiest to users. Based on the most severe vulnerabilities in popular applications that run on Windows and which are not updated automatically, Firefox again tops the list, followed by Adobe Reader and Apple QuickTime, according to Bit9, a provider of application whitelisting technology.

The list of risky software compiled by Bit9 based on the National Vulnerability Database also includes Java, Flash Player, Safari, Shockwave, Acrobat, Opera, Real Player, and Trillian. Last year, the Bit9 list of the most risky apps included Skype, Yahoo IM, and AOL IM, but those three were not on this year's list.

Not included on the list are programs from Microsoft and Google because of the ability for users of their software to have patches installed automatically. Microsoft software can be automatically and centrally updated via the Microsoft Systems Management Server and Windows Server Update Services, and Google Chrome is automatically updated when users are on the Internet, Bit9 said.

The lists do not take into account the amount of time it takes for companies to release patches, particularly when there is an exploit in the wild. Bit9 noted that Microsoft Internet Explorer was given an "honorable mention" because of a zero-day vulnerability related to ActiveX that went unpatched for three weeks in July.

Microsoft isn't alone in taking longer than customers would like to fix holes. In March, Adobe released a patch for a zero-day vulnerability in Reader and Acrobat--about two weeks after it was disclosed to users and nearly two months after exploits had been discovered in the wild.

Adobe customers will have to wait about a month for a fix to the latest critical zero-day hole in Reader and Acrobat. The company announced on Wednesday it would not patch the vulnerability until its next scheduled quarterly security update release on January 12.

Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning Model Bad Hair in Runaways Teaser

We know it's not exactly a sneak peak at Eclipse, but this might just be the next best thing.

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning spent a majority of their summer rockin' out in '70s garb and mullets, but now we get to see the fruits of those (rather hideous) labors.

Behold, the first trailer for the New Moon duo's Joan Jett biopic, The Runaways!

The film looks to be all about the girl power, with the group's track "Cherry Bomb" playing throughout the quick cuts of K.Stew throwing things and Dakota shakin' in a bustier.

It's difficult to believe these hard-core rock chicks have ever been sweet, klutzy Bella Swan and that cute kid from I Am Sam, no?

Rihanna Fans Rave About 'Sexy' 'Hard' Video

'I think she went out on a limb with this one,' says one fan of the clip, which premiered on MTV Thursday.

Rihanna's new video for "Hard," from her Rated R LP and featuring Young Jeezy, premiered on MTV Thursday (December 17). And MTV News took the video (in a small player) into Times Square to get fans' reactions to the singer's "couture military," as she described it, clip.

"I thought the video was different. It's a different look for her," Ashton Rusto said. "I definitely like the dark style that she's got going on lately."

"I think she went out on a limb with this one," Pete Majastra said. "Maybe got a little sexier. I think she looks beautiful in this video."

Another fan said the clip, which also shows Rihanna looking tough, is an indication of her strength. "It's cool because it shows a lot of where she's going and where she came from, and as far as she's growing up and dealing with a lot of adversities that she's been going through lately." said Michael Phillips.

One fan in particular enjoyed the scene where Rihanna is rolling around in a mudbath.

"Oh, the video is crazy," a man who called himself Big Sha joked. "You know Rihanna is sexy — not sexier than my wife, but you know she's sexy. The video is crazy!"

That's the exact word Rihanna used to describe the video to MTV News when we visited its set.

"Everything is surrounded around the idea of something military. We have tanks, we have troops, we've got helicopters, we've got explosions. We've got lots of cute outfits, lots of bullets. It's crazy!" she said.

TVXQ’s Break Out Jacket and mobile photos from the set

Yesterday, we shared with you the album covers TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki's upcoming new single in Japan titled Break Out. Here's some additional photos to share with the fans.

This is a photo from the Album Jacket:

The boys recently went to Japan to film for the Break Out MV as well, they look very stylish with new hairstyles, you can check the photos below. Whatever differences the group may have had internally, they're setting them aside for the good of the whole and filmed the MV successfully.

MBLAQ is Rain’s first and final production

Rain held a fan meeting titled, "Raining on Christmas," in Seoul at the Cartier store on December 17th, 2009. At this event he revealed some shocking information regarding MBLAQ and his future plans.

"Most likely, MBLAQ is my first but final production. To be honest, I just wanted to give these kids hope. When I wanted to dance and sing, I couldn't because I had no money. These kids right now, were just like me, so I just gave them some help."

In addition Rain stated:
"I still have a long way to go. I need to be more successful as an actor and I need to sing better as a singer. I still have a long way to go, so how can I really teach anyone?"

Rain did however shine positive light upon the situation by stating:
"If MBLAQ does well, wouldn't it be possible for them to directly produce some of their own stars? But right now, I want to just focus on MBLAQ, and myself."

But Rain didn't limit his options by implying that he may possibly produce another act:
"However, who knows when my heart will change."

Gotta leave it to Rain for always being cautious.

iPhone beats Windows Mobile in market share

Apple's iPhone has topped Microsoft's Windows Mobile in U.S. market share of smartphone operating systems for the first time, putting it in the No. 2 spot, according to a report from ComScore released Thursday.

In February, 5.2 million respondents to ComScore's survey reported using Apple's iPhone, while 6.8 million reported using phones running Microsoft's Windows Mobile, according to a report on FierceDeveloper. ComScore, a market research firm, averages results in a three-month period.

In May, Apple's number rose to 5.7 million, then 6.6 million in July, and finally to a high of 8.9 million for October, the most recent period for which results are available. In comparison, Microsoft rose in May to 7 million, dropped in July to 6.6 million, and went back up in October to 7.1 million.

The highest market share numbers in the survey go to Research In Motion's BlackBerry. It registered 9.6 million in February, 12.2 million in May, 13 million in July, and 14.9 million in October.

It's interesting to note that Palm's number rose from 2.3 million to 2.8 million in 2009, and Google's Android operating system rose to a high of 1 million by October.

The survey asked U.S. mobile subscribers, who had to be over the age of 13, what type of phone they use. ComScore then figured out what operating system they were using and calculated the data for the report.

Samsung Bada UI unveiled in beautiful stills, reason for existing still blurry

For one reason or another, Samsung’s been a bit reluctant in showing screenshots of its newly-announced bada smartphone OS.

Well, in case you want to know what the new mobile platform looks like (and you probably do want), there are many leaked screenshots available.

As Samsung previously said, the bada OS is based on the company’s TouchWiz UI, successfully used on its range of touchscreen phones (tens of millions of them), so don’t be surprised if you find some resemblances in the images below.

The first batch of bada OS images comes from Engadget Germany, showing the main screen (Twitter app included), a music playlist, maps and social networking integration:

All in all, Samsung’s new smartphone OS looks pretty nice, but it’s the usability and user-friendliness that count more than the aesthetics – so until the first Samsung bada phone is launched (sometime in the first half of 2010) we can’t actually know if the OS is worth all the hype around it.

Final Fantasy XIV Online Beta Rolled Out

While I was up in the air yesterday crossing the pond, Square Enix launched its Final Fantasy XIV beta program, offering Final Fantasy buffs a shot at early access. If you already know all there is to know about the game, you can skip straight to the action by visiting the official site and tapping the beta signup link. Note that this is for the Windows version, and PlayStation 3 recruitment won't begin until a later date.

For the rest, Final Fantasy XIV is Square Enix's official followup to Final Fantasy XI and the company's second franchise foray into massively multiplayer online roleplaying. Final Fantasy XI's been around since 2003 (an Xbox 360 version was launched in 2006) and steadily grown its user base from a few hundred thousand to around half a million subscribers as of November 2008.

Where Final Fantasy XI took place in the high fantasy world of Vana'diel, Final Fantasy XIV transpires in an "unknown realm" called Eorzea. Where Final Fantasy XI employed conventional experience points to determine character abilities, Final Fantasy XIV's characters take their cues from weapons and crafting tools: What a character equips influences his or her profession and abilities, and in a nod to Final Fantasy II's skill-driven mechanics, Final Fantasy XIV won't employ levels to signify advancement.

The game's due for global release (simultaneous, for a change) on the PlayStation 3 and Windows PCs sometime next year. Languages supported will include Japanese, English, French, and German, though no word yet on whether the game will employ an automatic language translator similar to the one found in Final Fantasy XI.

Beta testers will be recruited to test the usual stuff: Balance, game mechanics, and bugs. Anyone (over 18) can apply for consideration, regardless of past online roleplaying experience, you'll just need to set up a Square Enix ID account. Selection will depend on the content of your application, not submission order, and Square Enix plans several rounds, so if you don't get in initially, you'll have successive opportunities down the line. Once you're in, you can stay in through to the end of the beta test phase.

Kevin Jonas Getting Married This Weekend?

Tweens across the world with a hankering for Kevin Jonas, be prepared to have your heart smashed to pieces: The eldest Jonas brother is reportedly getting married this weekend. According to RadarOnline.com, Jonas and his longtime girlfriend Danielle Deleasa will be exchanging vows during a Long Island, New York ceremony on Saturday. Congrats to the both of them! Wedding details and a cute "how they met" after the jump!

Family and friends -- surely including fellow Jonas Brothers Nick and Joe -- will be in attendance as the two marry. Also on the guest list according to Radar is Demi Lovato, who has been romantically linked to Joe Jonas.

Jonas and Deleasa -- who is a former New Jersey hairdresser -- have been dating since 2007 after meeting in the Bahamas. They're both 22 years old.

Despite their high-profile relationship, the two rarely walk red carpets or go to major public events together, allowing them to keep their private life... well, private. Jonas proposed this summer by ambushing Deleasa at her New Jersey home and dropping to one knee on her doorstep.

Stephanie Pratt Maxim January 2010

Brace yourselves, Stephanie Pratt is barely clothed and ready to please. It’s sort of like looking at Spencer in a bra — Not a pretty thought.

“The guys in L.A. are so awful. I feel like I know half of them, and the other half I don’t want to know. They’re all wearing Ed Hardy shirts and trucker hats that say female body inspector. But I’m not looking for someone. I do not want to find my Mr. Right at 23….” Stephanie Pratt, Maxim Magazine, Jan. 2010

Charmaine Sheh has a 100 hour record for not sleeping

Charmaine Sheh is known for working hard and has previously experienced not sleeping for 100 hours due to shooting a series. This record is very shocking. She also revealed that she likes durian and crab. She would also prepare candy in her handbag to make herself happy.

Q: Reporter

Q: What do you need to carry in your handbag everyday?
C: Definitley my cell phone, candy and lipstick. Although I don't like eating too many sweet things, candy makes me feel happy.

Q: Which part of your body do you focus on the most?
C: Has to be my hands. People notice someone's age by the state of their hands. That's why I have never washed the dishes with my hands. Even when my mom offered to give me $HK200 I didn't take any notice.

Q: Which language would you most like to learn?
C: Japanese because I really like Japanese stuff. I can ask for discounts and ask for directions.

Q: What do you look at first when you meet someone?
C: Their eyes because you can tell if they are lying or telling the truth.

Q: What kind of person do you dislike?
C: I dislike irresponsible people. They affect people's work and need people to help finish their matters.

Q: Your favourite drink?
C: Pearl Bubble tea.

Q: Your favourite food?
C: Durian and crab. Although it makes me have sensitive skin but I really enjoy eating them.

Q: Food you dislike?

Q: How long is your record of not sleeping?
C: 4 years ago I was filming a Mainland series and experienced not sleeping for almost 5 days. I couldn't even stand up properly. After the 3rd day I became all numb and didn't know what I was doing.

Q: Who do you respect the most?
C: I respect my grade 6 teacher the most. My Maths has always been very bad but she didn't give up on me and gave me home tuition. I had dinner with my teacher this year. Although she is now 80 years old she is still very bright.

It’s been 100 days since JaeBum left Korea

It’s been 100 days on 16th December since JaeBum left Korea previously on 8th September.

It all started when his messages like “Korea is gay” and “I hate Koreans” written on his MySpace 4 years ago were exposed on 5th September amongst netizens. After the incident, JYP Entertainment issued out an apology, but after just 3 days, the leader of group 2PM has left the group and boarded the airplane heading home to his hometown Seattle.

And as a 6-member group, ‘2PM without JaeBum‘ won the TOP 10 awards during 2009 Melon Music Awards at their 3rd award ceremony of the year. Of course, during their thankyou speech, member TaecYeon mentioned JaeBum.

In the 100 days that JaeBum has left Korea, you can neither call it a long or short period of time, many things have changed.

The public has gained sympathy after all the anger on his MySpace message, and there are calls for JaeBum to return. Even though 2PM has been doing well up on various music charts, there are still 2PM fans who are waiting for JaeBum’s return and still engaging in certain boycott activities.

Even though 2PM puts up great performances as 6 members performing their latest hit ‘Heartbeat’, during their performance of ‘Again & Again’ at on of the award ceremony, the group left an empty space for JaeBum, and it had seemed so awkward.

Park JinYoung has also revealed on MBC Golden Fishery that, “JaeBum will return as part of 2PM” previously. The other 2PM members have also not forgotten to mention JaeBum when they received awards on various music shows. It is because he is the leader who will return one day. And the leader role in 2PM has been left empty.

Recently, a video of JaeBum winning at a B-Boy competition was revealed online. Netizens who have seen the video have commented, “I really miss the 2PM with JaeBum“, “It would be good if JaeBum returns” etc.

It has been 101 days since JaeBum left. How much time will remain until the day that JaeBum returns? We hope to see him return before the next 100th day comes.

Android: Catching Up to the iPhone

Consumer awareness of Android, an operating system for smartphones pushed by Google, is on a steep climb, which bodes well for vendors like Motorola and HTC. Of consumers expecting to shop for smartphones in the next three months, 17% are considering an Android-based device, according to comScore’s new survey of 2,300 consumers. In fact, devices based on Android aren’t far behind the iPhone. Some 20% of consumers are in the market for the Apple device.

The results represent a stark contrast to consumer sentiment of only a few months ago. In August, 7% of consumers were contemplating buying an Android device, while 21% of them were considering the iPhone.

The splash that Motorola’s Droid phone, based on Android, has made recently is partly responsible for increased attention that Android is getting. “In August 2009, just 22 percent of mobile users had heard of the Android, while in November 2009 this figure had reached 37 percent, largely prompted by the Verizon Droid advertising campaign launched in the fall,” according to the report. Android may get a further boost next year, when more Android devices should come onto the market. While the Android movement could still get derailed — for instance, if Google decides to release Android phones under its own brand — it certainly appears to be on the right track now, and rolling along with an ever-increasing speed.

Mozilla: The "The Web will Win" over App Stores

Mozilla believes that its new Firefox Mobile browser could wean developers away from developing for platform-specific app stores and onto developing cross-platform apps powered by JavaScript and HTML.

Mozilla is starting to take mobile seriously. It is set to release the first version of Firefox Mobile (codenamed Fennec) on Nokia’s N900 handset shortly, with versions for Windows Mobile and Android due to hit handsets next year.

Speaking to PC Pro, Jay Sullivan, vice president of mobile at Mozilla had the following to say:

“Anyone who knows JavaScript and HTML can develop a great app without having to learn a specific mobile platform.”

The problem according to Sullivan is that multiple platforms forces developers to have to recode the app for different platforms:

“You have to create an iPhone app, an Android app, a Windows Mobile app … As developers get more frustrated with quality assurance, the amount of handsets they have to buy, whether their security updates will get past the iPhone approval process … I think they’ll move to the web.”

Sullivan is confident that web-based solutions will triumph over app stores:

“In the interim period, apps will be very successful. Over time, the web will win because it always does.”

While I think that there’s certainly a lot of scope for web-based apps, I can’t see them replacing app stores. Some applications (such as games) just don’t translate to web apps. So while a decent cross-platform browser might ignite interest in web based apps, but it’s unlikely to make much of a dent in app store traffic.

I don’t think Apple executives are going to be losing any sleep over this.

Archos 9 PC Tablet finally shipping: gets video unboxing

The Archos 9 PC Tablet has been a long time coming, with preorders for the touchscreen slate only beginning to ship this month. Steve over at UMPC Portal has managed to acquire one of the first units, and has unboxed and given a brief overview of the 1.1GHz Atom Z515 machine on video.

By now there’s not much to surprise us in the hardware. The Archos 9 has a 60GB hard-drive, 1GB of RAM and runs Windows 7 Starter, along with WiFi and Bluetooth (but no 3G), while up front there’s a webcam, optical mouse and 9-inch resistive touchscreen running at 1024 x 600.

Steve is finding that battery life works out to around three hours with the WiFi turned on and the screen brightness at 50-percent. It’s reasonably light but not so much that you could use it for that full three hours holding it in just one hand; that tallies with our own findings when we played with the Archos 9 back in September. We’re not, it has to be said, especially confident about the performance of that 1.1GHz processor, either. Still, we’ll reserve judgement until the reviews start coming through.

Taylor Swift Miley Cyrus Matching Guitar Tattoos

A bikini-clad Miley Cyrus found herself a hotly-debated topic around the Watercooler (So what else is new?) earlier this month after she debuted a cryptically-scrawled ink beneath her left breast that reads “Just Breathe” – a tribute to a friend who died of cystic fibrosis. However, the controversy over how young is too young for body art hasn’t stopped Miley from trying to convince pal Taylor Swift to take the tattoo plunge, too.

The 17-year-old wildchild is working to convince the eight-time Grammy-nominated 20-year-old to join her in getting matching guitar tats to immortalize their bond as “Best Friends Forever.”

The National Enquirer’s Mike Walker writes: “Tattoo Virgin gasped when she heard Miley’s scheme to ink teeny guitars on their epidermis: ‘My mom would KILL me!’ Miley argued that Taylor could hide her first-ever tat on a hidden body part, but Taylor countered that her stage mother/manager often sees her nekkid backstage……”

Windows 7 leaving Redmond's help desk less busy

There are many ways to measure how Windows 7 is doing. There are reports on new PC sales, tallies of boxed copy sales, and surveys of planned enterprise adoption, to name a few.

But one of the most encouraging signs for Microsoft is the lack of phone calls it is getting from people with problems. Overall, Microsoft said the volume of calls to its support lines is half of what it expected.

"Overall we are finding our call center volume is down significantly more than we expected," said Barbara Gordon, vice president of customer support for Microsoft.

The drop in calls isn't just due to the fact that Windows 7 appears less problem-plagued than its predecessor, though. In the weeks leading up to and following the operating system's release, Microsoft also added two new ways to get help--through an online forum called Microsoft Answers and via the Microsoft Helps feed on Twitter.

"What we have found is we are seeing far more take-up of self-service...forums and Twitter to get responses," Gordon said in an interview this week.

With the Microsoft Answers forums, which launched late last year, users submit questions and experienced community members offer answers that Microsoft workers later validate to make sure they are correct.

So far, Microsoft has validated some 60,000 solutions. The company says that 83 percent of English-language queries are answered within seven days. Those in other languages have a slightly lower rate, but even of those 78 percent are taken care of within a week.

Meanwhile, Microsoft went live with its Twitter help site in October. Users can post a tweet with "@microsofthelps" in the message and Microsoft will respond. A team of seven employees dedicated full time to the project work with the broader support organization to respond to the many tweets. The goal is to either answer simple questions or to point people to a place where they can get a more detailed answer.

"It's hard to answer (most questions) in 140 characters," Gordon said.

But, she said, social networks like Twitter, Gordon said, allow the company to realize a problem that could be affecting thousands of people via a single short message.

"It's really like a customer megaphone," Gordon said.

Gordon hopes the new online options will not only cut down on call center expenses, but ultimately improve overall customer satisfaction with Windows. Customer satisfaction an area where the Mac has traditionally outpaced the various PC brands.

But Gordon says she hopes to see Windows gain ground. "We are really working on this," she said.

Although Apple touts its personal touch with its stores, Gordon suggests Microsoft's high-tech approach might ultimately win it more fans. "If I can help myself without having to go to the mall and sit at a geek bar I will be happier," she said.

Nonetheless, one of the main features of Microsoft's two retail stores is an answer desk very similar to the "Genius Bar" found in Apple stores.

As for the questions people ask on Twitter, they range from the expected range of bugs and problems to inquiries about future versions of products. This week, for example, one user asked when to expect Windows 8. Although vague, the answer was at least as direct as anything a reporter would get by asking Redmond.

"It will be a few years until the next official version comes out," Microsoft replied on the Twitter feed. "Keep an eye out on microsoft.com for future updates."

In addition to building goodwill and cutting costs, the online forums also allow Microsoft to quickly see when a problem is affecting a significant number of users. Such mechanisms helped Microsoft to recognize and then solve a video driver problem that was causing some users to have their systems hang when they reached 62 percent completion on an upgrade to Windows 7.

Within a week, Microsoft had a solution on its Website and shortly thereafter it posted an automated "Fix It," essentially a script that a user can click on to have the proper steps done automatically. The Windows 7 upgrade fix has already been used more than 35,000 times, Microsoft said.

"We're getting people able to meet their needs themselves," Gordon said.

Open source browsers put pressure on IE in 2009

Microsoft’s ability to hold off open source rivals is weakening.

Even as its proprietary browser market share is dropping hard, execs agreed to offer support for competitive browsers with its Windows operating system in exchange for an end to its legal nightmares in Europe.

It’s a win for the community in Europe but I’m not sure the open source rivals need the help. According to Net Applications’ statistics, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer market share has dropped more than 5 percent to 64 percent since January of 2009. Its share was roughly 70 percent at the start of the year, and it was at 75 percent in mid 2008.

Its share has fallen mostly to the two leading open source browsers, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. Google’s Chrome has increased to 4 percent market share from 1.5 percent at the start of 2009. Google’s browser — whose use will no doubt increase after the release of the complementary Google operating system late next year — was first released in September of 2008. Not bad for 14 months on the market.

Meanwhile, market share of the leading open source browser, Mozilla Firefox, climbed to roughly 25 percent over the past year, also up 3 percentage points to 24.72 percent in November. Its share was 22 percent at the beginning of this year.

Opera, the other open source browser, stayed roughly the same with two percent market share, according to Net Applications.

The days of Internet Explorer’s dominance appear to be waning. Of course, Microsoft’s Windows operating system monopoly still owns the market, but we’re not sure how long that will matter, especially as software-as-a-service models take off and Google’s web-focused operating system is prepped for release.

As Microsoft’s grip on the browser market loosens, opportunities for open source rivals are blossoming. It will be interesting to see which of the two top open source browsers benefits most in 2009.

Former actress Gigi Lai changes name in hopes of bearing a son

Former Hong Kong actress Gigi Lai has changed her Chinese name from "Li Zi" to "Li Jia Er" after a geomancer told her that this would increase her chances of getting pregnant.

Upon hearing this news, Lai's husband, businessman Ma Ting Qiang decided to reward her efforts by forking out HK$20 million (S$4 million) to expand Lai's beauty salon.

The 38-year-old former actress had been married to Ma, 52, for the past 11 months. When they got married, she promised to give the Ma family an heir but her efforts so far have been in vain.

Desperate for a child, Lai went to fertility specialists and even consulted a geomancer on the matter, despite being a devout Christian.

A geomancer claimed that Lai's old name "Li Zi" benefited her career but conversely decreased the chances of her having a child. Even if she conceived, the child will more likely be a daughter than a son.

Lai's new name "Li Jia Er" - which sounds the same phonetically as the phrase "adding a son" - is believed to change her fortune and improve her chances of gaining a son.

However, the new name will reportedly give her less luck with interpersonal relationships. This would not affect Lai much since she has retired from the entertainment industry and will not need to meet as many people as before.

Lai has asked all her acquaintances to address her by her new name. She also replaced all instances of her old name in her passport and other documents, on the advice of her geomancer.

Accorind to the geomancer, her name change will be more effective if people forget about her old name quickly.

Mag+ digital magazine reader concept headed to 2010 prototype [Video]

Prototype digital media tablets seem to be the concepts of the moment, and we’re particularly enamoured with Bonnier R&D’s Mag+. They reckon that part of the appeal of magazines is the ability to “lose yourself” in the content, and as such the concept - which was designed by BERG – is navigated by “shifting focus” though tapping different sides of the screen.

Interestingly, despite the almost unfathomable amount of content available out there, Bonnier R&D discovered that readers prefer to know that their magazines – digital or print – have an end and are not infinite. People, they claim, like the sense of completion when they reach the end, and they also like knowing how far through the content they are; that’s contrasted with the sense of anxiety triggered by an ever-filling RSS reader.

There’s also search – with an on-screen keyboard – bookmarking and saving of pages, and a clever on-screen “atom” with petal-like options that can be pulled up with a tap-and-hold gesture. BERG’s renders are incredible, really impressive, and the full overview (the first video below) is worth a view if you have eight minutes to spare. Following it is just the excerpts of the concept. Excitingly, Kicker Studio are apparently working on translating the concept into a functional prototype in 2010.

Get Ready For The Google Branded Chrome OS Netbook

Most of the tech world now considers it a given that Google will be selling its own unlocked phone, called the Nexus One, to customers directly early in 2010. A few stragglers are still debating the finer points of the difference between Google working with handset manufacturers and carriers on a good Android experience v. them dictating the hardware specs and selling it directly to users. While they work that out for themselves we’re off to the next story – the Google Chrome OS Netbook (although we think Google has a few surprises left around the Nexus One, too).

Google has said from the beginning that they plan on working with select manufacturers to ensure a good Chrome OS experience for users when devices first hit the market next year. From an early FAQ: “The Google Chrome OS team is currently working with a number of technology companies to design and build devices that deliver an extraordinary end user experience. Among others, these companies include Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba.”

Most people assume that “working with” around Chrome OS means the same thing as “working with” around Android – lots of meetings to make sure the devices and software work together as well as possible. But sometimes those pesky hardware guys just don’t do things quite right. And when you’re competing against Apple, everything most definitely needs to be quite right.

That may explain why Google has, according to multiple sources, been talking to at least one hardware manufacturer about building a netbook for Google directly. As in Google gave the company a RFP with quite detailed technical specifications and has begun discussions on building it.

They’re not in any particular hurry and seem to be aiming for the 2010 holiday season, a full year from now. Our understanding is that Google intends to have the devices built, branded with Google, and then sell them directly to consumers. The only firm tech spec we’ve heard is that they’ll be mobile enabled, and likely tied to one or more carriers with a subsidy.

I’m dying to get my hands on that RFP and have been feverishly calling our contacts in Taiwan and China to see if we can get someone to quietly hand it over to us. In particular I want to know whether Google is going with an Intel Atom processor, the current leader in netbooks, or may be considering an ARM CPU. I’d be willing to bet one of our writers’ right hands that it’s ARM. And I’d even go out on a limb and suggest that they may very well be targeting Nvidia’s Tegra line. Those chips are outperforming Atom in every way, say some of the hardware guys we know. HD Flash video no problem (something the Atom can’t do), and at a fraction of the power usage.

What does that mean? It means next Christmas you may be getting a high performance Google branded netbook running Chrome OS for next to nothing. And if it’s running ARM, Intel is going to be freaking the hell out about it.

As an aside, if you need a netbook now, I’d recommend the Nokia Booklet 3G. It’s amazing, and you can get it for $300 with a 2 year AT&T data plan. Nokia may not be able to make phones anyone gets excited about any more, but that netbook is cool.

Guess what Kim Hye Soo is selling?

You would never have guessed it and neither did I.

Actress Kim Hye Soo had recently turned herself into a pale looking vampiress and filmed a CF for Fissler kitchen appliances. The CF pictures were released on the 17th ahead of the actual CF video release in January 2010.

It was revealed that the concept of the CF was titled Fissler in Fantasy and the idea came from photographer Kang Young Ho. She had wanted to show how the kitchen was a world that's filled with dreams and romance for females through her vampiress image.

Many commented after looking at the pictures that it didn't look like a CF, and looked more like a artsy photoshoot instead. What do you think?

Final Fantasy XIII launches in Japan

Final Fantasy XIII, one of the most awaited video games of the year, went on sale Thursday morning in Japan. The game marks the first time the long-running series has appeared on the PlayStation 3 and launches as the console is enjoying better sales.

Several hundred people queued in the pre-dawn cold in Tokyo's Shibuya district to be among the first in the world to own the game. Sales began at the Tsutaya software store on Shibuya crossing at 7a.m. and simultaneously at other major electronics stores across the city. It costs ¥8,300 (US$93).

Testament to it's expected appeal are pre-release shipments, which have reached 1.8 million copies, according to the CEO of game developer Square Enix, Yoichi Wada, who was at the launch.

"Final Fantasy XIII is an entire world developed by one of our creators," he said. "Of course you can complete the game fast but if you take your time you'll be able to live inside the game for several months."

Those initial shipments compare with three-month Japan sales of 2.3 million copies for Final Fantasy X and 2.2 million for Final Fantasy XII when the games launched in 2001 and 2006 respectively.

The Final Fantasy role-playing series has sold over 85 million units worldwide since it first launched in 1987 and is one of the most popular games in Japan.

This latest installment has been a long time appearing. Fans have been waiting more than three years since it first appeared in video preview form in 2006 but the project has been even longer for the development team.

"We've spent more than 5 years developing this game," said Yoshinori Katase, producer of the game. "My son was in the first year of primary school when we started and now he's in the second year of middle school."

The launch of Final Fantasy XIII also marks the first time the Final Fantasy series has appeared on the PlayStation 3 platform. To coincide with the launch, Sony Computer Entertainment began selling on Thursday a special edition of the console with an illustration of "Lightning," the game's heroine, and the Final Fantasy XIII name on the case. The console costs 41,600 yen.

Sony is hoping the special edition will help boost sales of the PlayStation 3 ahead of the year-end holiday season. Sales of the console have recently been improving thanks to a redesign and price cut and it now costs roughly half what it did when it first went on sale in 2006. But Sony is still losing money in its game business and recently said it expects to return to profitability in 2010.

With the launch of the PlayStation 3 version in Japan on Thursday, the game will next appear in Europe and North America on March 9, 2010. In those areas it will also be available for the Xbox 360.

Why Google Needs Its Own Phone

Someone has to stand up to the carriers.

By now, you've heard the hubbub. Google is preparing its own smartphone to challenge Apple, Palm, Research In Motion, and -- oh, the horror! -- Motorola, a partner with Google. The new Nexus One, as it's known, is presumably slated to be sold through Google's web site, beginning in January.

Verizon executives probably hated this idea when they first heard it. Why? Control. Google plans to relinquish none, according to reports published by The Wall Street Journal. This won't be Droid 2.0.

Carriers just aren't part of the plan, though T-Mobile subscribers may get a discount on the Nexus One if The Big G and Deutsche Telekom reach an accord. The two companies are negotiating now, the Journal reports.

No other handset maker has shown this kind of guts -- or stupidity, if you think Google has gone mentally AWOL -- not even Apple. AT&T has long had a say in how and when the iPhone gets tethering, a technology for connecting a cell phone to a computer to enable wireless Web access.

By going it alone, Google is reframing the argument over who controls the content that appears on a smartphone. Traditionally, that's been carriers. Apple has made progress with the App Store but apparently not enough for Google's taste.

And that's as it should be. Google, fundamentally, is an ad server. It can't allow a private network to stiff-arm software that will help it to collect data from Android handsets. To do so would be to waste the $750 million it spent for mobile ad market AdMob.

Carriers don't mind Google right now. The Droid is a hit. But just as Apple had its own finger-pointing fracas with Ma Bell, Google could suffer a spat with Verizon or T-Mobile over Android apps that pull unwanted data from their networks. That's a problem. Google isn't ever likely to approve of a model that allows carriers to dictate terms. The Big G thrives on unrestricted usage of its services; it's how its advertising engine gets smarter.

Google needs its own phone. Not because the other handset makers are a threat, but because it can't depend on the carriers.

But that's my take. Now it's your turn. Is Google's Nexus One the telecom equivalent of a thrown gauntlet? Please vote in the poll below. You can also sound off in the comments box at the bottom.
