10.1-inch Galaxy Tab teased with prototype panel?

Does that look like a 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab to you? Sure does to us though Tech-on! is calling it an "electronic book reader" prototype from Samsung. Thing is, when was the last time you made a 3G video call using a dedicated ebook reader? The 10.1-inch panel is a 1.8-mm thick LCD prototype on display right now at the FPD International trade show in Japan. It features a 1,024 x 600 pixel panel resolution, 250nits brightness, and covers 50 percent of the NTSC color gamut. And while this particular slim panel won't be ready for commercialization for another two or three years, there's nothing stopping Samsung from bunging a production-ready LCD into the 10-inch Galaxy Tab promised for 2011. Check the new LCD in profile after the break.

BlackBerry PlayBook to cost 'under' $500

RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie finally gave us a crucial bit of information about the BlackBerry Playbook this morning: price, or at least a threshold. According to a Korean interview, Balsillie said that RIM's 7-inch tablet will be "very competitively priced" with Bloomberg quoting the man saying that it will be "under" $500 when it hits North America in the first quarter of 2011, expanding globally in Q2. A price that should at least match the 9.7-inch WiFi-only iPad (16GB) and undercut the 7-inch 3G Galaxy Tab which goes on sale on Verizon tomorrow for $599.99. Thing is, by the time Q1 rolls around we're going to be looking at many, many more viable tablet alternatives including a likely Apple refresh.

Yesterdaty Charlene Choi (Ah Sa) wore a dress by the brand PINKO to attend the "Emperor Jewellery 'Elegant Lighting Studio" jewellery preview along with Gillian Chung (Ah Gil) in a strapped S. Nine by Craver dress, Vincy Chan, Sherman Chung and Michelle Mai. These EEG artists were the models for the Emperor Jewellery accessories. Under the escort of Ah Gil, Ah Sa responded to the "Mrs. Cheng" rumors, she stressed: "He (ex-husband) and I have completed the divorce long ago, under the law. I am legally not Mrs. Cheng anymore. I am Miss Choi." Ah Gil, who was besides her helped out: "She's mine." Asked when she returned to being Miss Choi? She avoided the question: "What I had to explain, I already did. We have been separated for over a year, it's just as he says, it's a technical problem, let technology handle it. (But your ex-husband officially filed for divorce in October?) Under the law, it's all done." Ah Sa stressed again that she has already cleared up the relationship with her ex-husband.

Lady Gaga and Miley Cirus storm Hollywood rich list: Half of top earners are under 30

Half of Hollywood’s top female earners are aged under 30.

Youth trumped experience as Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were named as the highest-grossing stars of last year.

Together they earned almost £200million to secure their place on the annual Forbes list of Hollywood’s top female stars.

Did Windows Phone 7 only sell 40,000 handsets on launch day?

Did a $100 million advertising budget only manage to generate 40,000 Windows Phone 7 sales on launch day?

This according to TheStreet:

Even with a glitzy media intro last month hosted by champion inside-seller and company chief Steve Ballmer, Microsoft, which spent a reported $100 million on the phone’s advertising campaign, sold a mere 40,000 Windows 7 phones Monday, according to a market research source who tracks phone sales.

Time to put that 40,000 figure in perspective. Apple had some 600,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4, and is selling some 270,000 a day. Google says that some 200,000 Android handsets are being activated daily. Microsoft gave away some 89,000 handsets to employees, a figure not included in the sales estimate.

Are potential customers playing a wait-and-see game? Did the marketing campaign fail to excite people? Are there too many Windows Phone 7 handsets to choose from? Is it going to take time for people to take Microsoft seriously in the mobile sector?

Personally, I think it’s going to take time. But I also think that there are too many WP7 handset OEMs scrabbling for attention, but again time will thin down this herd, and the real winners and losers are revealed.

Microsoft had better be in this for the long haul …

Nokia N8 has received the highest number of pre-orders in the company’s history

Available around the world as of last month, the Nokia N8 (the world’s first Symbian^3 smartphone) will probably become one of the company’s best-selling high-end handsets in the near future.

In fact, Nokia has just announced (via Twitter) that the “N8 has received the highest amount of consumer pre-orders” in its history.

Sadly, Nokia doesn’t talk numbers yet, but pre-orders have to be in the range of millions.

Even though Symbian^3 is not regarded as one of the nicest mobile platforms out there, the combination of great features (12MP camera included) and accessible price seems to make the N8 a winner.

Of course, Symbian will continuously receive improvements, as Nokia announced not long ago.

AllAboutSymbian has it that there will be more than 50 enhancements coming to S^3 in early 2011, including portrait QWERTY, split screen input, and a new browser. The enhancements will be available not only for the N8, but also for the C7, C6-01, E7 and all upcoming Symbian smartphones.

According to Nokia, “over 100 key operators around the world are ranging the Nokia N8 in over 40 countries.” I’d say there’s a good chance the smartphone will be sold in more than 10 million units pretty soon – what do you think?

Explosives Engineer at blame for Selina’s accident

It’s been half a month since Selina Jen and her costar Yu Hao Ming were severely injured on the set of their drama “I have a date with spring”. According to the production team's investigation, the main cause of the accident was due to operational errors by the explosives engineer.

Five explosion points were setup to go off off one-by-one, but instead, they exploded all at once while the two stars were still running away from them. The investigation report has been submitted to the respective management companies. HIM records said they plan to meet with professionals before commenting on the report.

Many questions were raised after the investigation was made public. However, that's the least of Ren Ba’s (Selina’s dad) concerns right now, “We are really not blaming anyone. What has passed has passed. We have really let go, and accepted the facts. I only think about her health.”

He said his daughter is thankful for the beautiful life she has been given and will frankly accept her scars. Ren Ba also updated his blog on the 10th with some good news -- "Thank you to the greater powers! Hsuan Hsuan (Selina) slept well last night. Today's process of re-applying her medication also went well. Her hands have been wrapped in bandage for two weeks, (but) her left thumb can finally be exposed to see daylight!"

Vic Chou refuses stunt double for explosion scenes

After the disastrous accident for Selina during filming, many actors are becoming more cautious and using more stunt doubles. However, this is not the case with Vic Chou. For his newest drama "回家 (Returning Home)", Vic insisted on not using a stuntman even during a scene with explosives going off right under his feet. The crew were all impressed by his dedication, however, they admitted to breaking out in cold sweat over worrying for him.

With the Sino-Japanese War as the background for "Returning Home", there has already been five straight days of filming with explosives. As the filming location is fairly large, there were more than a hundred explosion points setup. One wrong step could set off the explosives and cause great damage. Despite this, whenever there was down time, Vic and Li Li-Ren (Vic's older brother in the series) chatted and laughed away.

According to Vic's manager, it's not that Vic doesn't understand the dangers as he was required to attend a class demonstrating the power of the explosives. It was because he wanted to be professional about it. Due to Selina's tragic accident, not only was Vic insured for up to NT$100million, an explosives expert was brought in to demonstrate the powers of the explosives to all the actors and every actors was tested multiple times about where the explosives were placed before actually turning the explosives on.

Android still facing years-old unlock screen bug, Gmail 2.3 attachment woes have Google stumped

So, that new 2.3 version of Gmail that launched in September? Yeah, we'd steer clear if you haven't nabbed it yet. Google's currently trying to track down a bug that's leaving many users (including our own hapless Chris Ziegler) unable to download any attachments. Interestingly, or disconcertingly if you're of the pessimistic sort, Google actually has a "Gmail attachment issues investigation" page set up to allow highly technical users to submit debug reports of the problem. Sure, we're all for crowd sourcing, but we also wouldn't mind a big sturdy "hey guys, we've got this" on an issue of this magnitude. The worst part? You can't revert to the old version of Gmail if you've got the latest OTA update on your fancy new T-Mobile G2.

Interestingly, while we were discussing this issue, ensconced in the Engadget HQ jacuzzi, adult beverages in hand, we got a tip from some poor soul detailing a bug that's been in Android since the G1 days. Basically, if you fail at the pattern unlock too many times, the phone will ask you to enter your Google account info to unlock your phone. Sounds like a smart security feature, but unfortunately it doesn't work. The insanely detailed thread on Google's Android bug tracker reads like a history of the Android platform and the futility of man rolled into one, with various workarounds being discovered for different phones, and many desperate users resorting to wiping their phones and starting over. Sure it's minimal in the grand scheme of things, and plenty of platforms have outstanding bugs years after release, but we figured a little *bump* couldn't do anyone any harm. This one's for you, Dylan R.

Behold! Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's Brazilian Love Nest

Now before you get your Twi-panties in a twist, let us preface: These are shots of Casa Em Paraty, which apparently serves as Edward and Bella's honeymoon house (won't be making that mistake again of posting Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's real love hideaway...like they have in New Orleans).

As you know, Breaking Dawn is currently filming in South America, but unlike those sexy set shots of Rob and Kristen going at it, you won't be getting any peeks of what will be going down on this private island...

Rachel Bilson & Hayden Christensen Are Dating Again

After calling off their engagement in August, Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen are giving their romance another shot.

"They're dating again," a friend of the actress tells PEOPLE.

And they're not hiding, either.

Last week, Christensen was seen leaving Bilson's house in Los Feliz, Calif. With Bilson based in Los Angeles and Christensen living in Canada, distance was reportedly one of the main reasons for the split.

Christensen, 29, and Bilson, 29, met on the set of Jumper in 2007, and got engaged in December 2008.

Ask.com Gives Up On Search, Hangs Its Hopes On Q&A

IAC’s Ask.com has laid off 130 of its search engineers in New Jersey and China and surrendered its search operations to its competitors in the notoriously tough search market. Remaining search staff, who primarily worked on maintaining the rank algorithm, will be relocating to Oakland, and focusing on the Ask Q&A product.

Search is an almost impossible business to get into, with Google controlling around 66% of the market and Microsoft controlling another 27.9% with its Yahoo partnership, according to Comscore. Ask was number three at 3.8% share.

Much like Yahoo did with Bing, Ask will be outsourcing it’s search technology to a company that it has declined to mention. As Ask already has a partnership with Google, Google might be a pretty safe bet.

What does this mean for the search industry? While this is yet another proof that it is hard to compete with Google, there are tons of smaller scrappier search engines, including Aol, Altavista and Lycos. As newcomer Blekko has positioned itself as gunning for the number three slot in search, this recent development must be great news.

The Q&A space is hot right now, but like search it has its fair share of competitors. By attempting to win with Q&A, Ask will be up against dominant players Yahoo! Answers, Quora, Formspring and Facebook. IAC boss Barry Diller, who infamously quipped “Ask has no value inside of IAC” at TechCrunch Disrupt in September, will most likely face an uphill battle there as well.

Dell Venue Pro Already Seeing Some WiFi Issues?

The Dell Venue Pro, which became available on Monday, may be affected by a troublesome bug. According to several BGR readers, the new Windows Phone 7 handset from Dell is unable to connect to protected Wi-Fi networks. Affected users report that when they attempt to connect to a secured Wi-Fi network using the standard Wi-Fi utility, they receive the following message: “your phone couldn’t reach the Wi-Fi network”. Users report no such problem when connecting to unprotected wireless networks.

Dell has been contacted for comment and we will update this post with any official statement we receive.

Apple, Motorola, HTC make most reliable smartphones

Square Trade, a company that sells warranties for a host of products, has released a study on smartphone reliability. In analyzing the failure of just over 50,000 smartphones, the company has compiled a list detailing which OEM makes the most reliable device.

In measuring hardware durability, Square Trade reports that, after 12-months of ownership, both BlackBerrys and iPhone 3GS’ were the least accident prone handsets. RIM’s smartphones had a 6.7% accident rate while the iPhone 3GS had a 9.4% accident rate. HTC and Motorola were tied for third amongst specific OEMs with a 12.2% accident rate. The report lists the overall rate of “other” smartphones as 10.2% and — unsurprisingly — the iPhone 4 fared the worst with a 13.8% rate.

Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops Redefines Modern Warfare

Black Ops slips players into the counter-espionage and abiding fear of the Cold War, while serving as a powerful link between the World War II games that came before it and the likely countless modern shooters that will come in its wake.

Developer Treyarch's first Call of Duty set outside World War II is a gripping experience that uses the story of one special forces operative and his forays into Cuba, Russia and Vietnam to examine the nature of a world living in the shadow of a constant threat of global genocide. More than any Call of Duty before it, Black Ops manages to provide both an intense game playing experience and a provocative story without watering down either. Black Ops reminds us that games should be an exploration of the unusual, a chance to do what hasn't been done before, either in real life or other video games.

TVB Sales Presentation 2011

Last night TVB Sales Presentation 2011 was held in TV city and all TVB artistes were well-dressed to impress. This year's TV king favorites Moses Chan and Wayne Lai were the most popular, who were surrounded by many people when they appeared. Evergreen Mak, who stands out with his role as Leung Fei Fan in "No Regrets," was also popular among advertisers and fans. TV Queen favorites Charmaine Sheh and Sheren Tang were absent from the event.

Moses walked out with rumored girlfriend Bernice Liu. While the "Can't Buy Me Love" actor was conservatively dressed in black, his rumored girlfriend showed off her sexy back in a simple black dress. The actress expressed she might not appear in the Anniversary Awards Ceremony. "The audience don't need me to show off my sexiness," she joked.

Rubber queen Katy Perry back in latex as husband Russell Brand rubs shoulders with royalty

Katy Perry shows no sign of hanging up her sexy stage outfits since tying the knot with new husband Russell Brand if her latest latex confection is anything to go by.

The Firework singer took to the stage for a gig in New York to launch the new Windows Phone wearing a skintight purple rubber minidress decorated with cupcakes.

It's the latest in a long line of clinging latex frocks for the star as she promotes current album Teenage Dream.

Previous confections have included rubber dresses featuring balloons, candyfloss, lollipops and palm trees, all keeping the theme of her album's artwork and video for his single California Gurls.

Katie and Russell had been keeping a low profile following their wedding three weeks ago.

James Franco As Jason Bourne? Franco Courted For “The Bourne Legacy”

James Franco is a top contender for the starring role in the upcoming spy-action blockbuster The Bourne Legacy.

The studious screen star — who has left fans fainting with a harrowing self-amputation scene in the Ripped From the Headlines adventure biopic 127 Hours –has been approached by director Tony Gilroy, who is interested in having the actor succeed Matt Damon as star of The Bourne Legacy, the fourth film in the Bourne franchise — which includes The Bourne Identity and its sequels The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Acquistion.

This is the first in the franchise that will not feature Matt Damon as lead character Jason Bourne — a fact which the Oscar-winning action star, 32, learned after reports surfaced on the blogosphere pointing to the end of his run with the series!

“I couldn’t imagine trying to replace him. All the conspiratorial politics aside, these are very un-cynical, honest movies, and I don’t know another actor who brings more integrity and dignity, and a lack of cynicism to his work than Matt,” Gilroy confessed recently. “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter… this is a stand-alone project,” he added.

The Bourne Legacy is expected to hit theaters in 2012.

Google Instant Previews: Get Ready To Be 5% More Likely Satisfied With Google Search

I can’t recall something we’ve gotten tipped about more than Google Instant Previews. Even after we wrote about it appearing in the wild a month ago, the tips kept flowing in. Even just yesterday we received two more: “NEW GOOGLE FEATURE!!!” We appreciate the tips, and I’m happy to say today that you can stop sending this specific one. Because Google is officially launching the feature.

As apparently hundreds of you have already seen, Google Instant Previews allows you to see what’s on a website right from a Google Search results page. All you have to do is simply click the little magnifying glass icon next to a result and an overlay will appear to the right of the link, showing you what’s on the page.

“This is the next step in the story of Instant,” Ben Gomes, a Google Distinguished Engineer, tells us. He notes that Google has gone from a standard text input, to autocomplete, to Instant, and now we have Instant Previews. This is all about “pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with technology,” Gomes says.

Kendra Wilkinson Reveals Reason for Her New Playboy Cover

Kendra Wilkinson is back in the pages of Playboy – but still hasn't gone back on her word to husband Hank Baskett not to pose nude again for the magazine.

The star of Kendra on E! – and the former star of The Girls Next Door, about life with Hugh Hefner in the Playboy Mansion – explains the situation on her blog.

"I AM on the December cover of Playboy," she writes, "but it wasn't from a recent shoot. The photos are from a shoot I did 2 years ago when I was still living in the mansion."

She adds: "I'm flattered to be on the cover again and as you all know Playboy has a very special place in my heart! I just wanted you guys to know I didn't recently pose."

Wilkinson, 25, says she wanted to clear up any confusion for fans who had seen her struggling on her show with the decision of whether or not to pose again.

After she got engaged in 2009, Wilkinson decided not to pose nude for Playboy again. "He gets really mad when I do stuff like that," she said at the time of her husband.

Barbie Hsu finally gets in-law’s approval

Looks like Barbie Hsu has finally got the approval she's been yearning for.

Wang Xiaofei's mother, Zhang Lan, was so elated after the Taiwanese actress and host visited her in Shanghai, she's now calling Barbie her "daughter-in-law".

The 34-year-old is engaged to Chinese millionaire, Xiaofei, 29, after dating each other for 20 days.

Xiaofei's mother was down with a bad case of flu while Barbie was filming in China, so the latter took leave and made an overnight trip with her fiancé to Shanghai just to visit her future in-law.

Zhang Lan expressed that she felt much better after seeing Barbie, who brought along both Western and Chinese medicine for the elder. The millionaire's mother also added that the Wangs are lucky to have such a good daughter-in-law.

When asked about Barbie's past depression problems, Zhang Lan defended the actress by saying that anyone could get depression when a lot of stress is involved, even herself.

She also emphasized that they are a happy family and there's no need for a pre-nuptial agreement between her son and Barbie. She also looked forward to having a grandson, affirming that Barbie will make a good mother.

Don't Ask Jake Gyllenhaal About Taylor Swift

While Jake Gyllenhaal makes the rounds promoting Love and Other Drugs, there's something super-private attached to his hip. And it's not Taylor Swift's phone number. Nope, wherever Jake goes, his publicist trails, bullishly laying down the law to reporters.

"No personal questions to Jake or he'll be pulled away, you got it?"

That's the line we (and many, many other reporters) got last week at the premiere, with one of those daring glares right at us like, you mention Taylor Swift I'm going to kick your ass.

But one journo didn't exactly play by the rules...

At a Love press conference in NYC, an interviewer went for it and asked J.G. what the deal was with Taylor Swift.

After the few seconds of awkward silence, Anne Hathaway jumped in for her buddy:

"Hang on, hang on, I have to say something! I have been Jake's onscreen love interest for years, all right? You keep the conversation to me and only me, otherwise I'm going to get nasty!"

Way to shut it down, girl! Jake's team was very pleased. But really, we must ask: Why is this duo being treated with the same secrecy as Robert Pattinson's relationship with taking a shower? It's all good, sexy fun, everybody. Own it, already!

See Miranda Kerr in Full Pregnant-and-Nude Bloom

Guess we have Demi Moore to thanks for this?

Miranda Kerr has passed another Hollywood Mommy-to-Be milestone with what seems to be the now-obligatory preggers 'n' nekkid photo.

So what prompted the supermodel to bare all?

Mrs. Orlando Bloom stripped down as part of W magazine's family issue.

The glossy's December installment, which hits newsstands Wednesday, also features Usher and sons Usher V and Naviyd, Madonna and Lourdes, Katherine Heigl and Naleigh, and Jenna Jameson and her twins—yes, her actual sons, Jesse and Journey, not just her chest.

Google’s Response To Facebook’s Response To Google’s Facebook API Ban

Yesterday Facebook released a clever way to continue to download Google user data, despite Google banning Facebook from using their APIs. It looks to me like they aren’t going to try to stop Facebook from using this more manual approach. Instead, for now, it’s being escalated only via words:

We’re disappointed that Facebook didn’t invest their time in making it possible for their users to get their contacts out of Facebook. As passionate believers that people should be able to control the data they create, we will continue to allow our users to export their Google contacts.

That’s a nice swipe there in the beginning, about how they wish Facebook had spent time giving people a way to liberate their own Facebook data rather than building tools to end run around Google. That last bit though, about “people should be able to control the data they create” doesn’t quite hit the mark though in my opinion.

We’re talking about your Facebook friends list and their email addresses. You create your list of friends, of course, but you generally aren’t uploading email addresses to Facebook, your friends do. Still, I think there are excellent logic arguments for allowing users to download friends’ email addresses, too. More on that later.

3 million Samsung Galaxy S Android smartphones sold in the US

While announcing the new Samsung Continuum for Verizon, Samsung has also unveiled that it sold more than 3 million Galaxy S handsets in the US – where all four major mobile carriers are offering different versions of the device.

The news comes one month after the South Korean company announced it has shipped 2 million Galaxy S units Stateside.

Paul Golden, Chief Marketing Officer at Samsung Mobile USA, declared to Reuters that “we’re in a situation where we wish we had more supply,” further saying that the main problem is producing Super AMOLED displays (which are included in all Galaxy S models).

Samsung has shipped more than 7 million Galaxy S smartphones globally until now, and sales will most probably pass the planned 10 million mark pretty soon. Let’s hope that “pretty soon” is also when Samsung will manage to push Android 2.2 Froyo on its Galaxy S handsets in the US, because all of them (including the new Continuum) run Android 2.1 at the moment.

SNSD receives a ‘Double Gold’ just 3 months after Japanese debut

Girl group sensation, SNSD, recently surpassed the 100,000 sales mark on the Japanese Oricon Charts for the second consecutive time!

As of November 9th on the Oricon’s ‘Weekly Singles Chart‘, SNSD’s second single ‘Gee‘ sold 13,320 copies in the 3rd week, and thus achieved the 100,000 milestone for accmulated sales.

What’s interesting to note here is that ‘Gee’ is gaining more popularity than their debut track ‘Genie‘. While ‘Genie’ took 8 weeks to surpass 100,000 sales, ‘Gee’ managed to overcome it in just 3.

The Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) will bestow the group with a second ‘Gold‘ disk for ‘Gee’, in recognition of their phenomenal sales. Congratulations, SNSD!

Hebe: Selina is not afraid of scars

During her full house concert on Saturday in Hong Kong, Hebe Tien told fans that her friend and group-mate Selina Jen is really brave and not afraid of being disfigured from her burns.

Hebe said, according to Selina it didn't matter if the scars remain as they were just a reminder of a chapter of her life.

Selina had been in recovery since her filming accident in China last month which caused third degree burns on over 30% of her body.

Hebe also dedicated the song 'You're beautiful' to her good pal, reminding fans that Selina was truly beautiful despite the pain she's going through. She added that Selina would always shout, "Yes!" from where she's seating whenever Hebe sang this song on stage in Taiwan.

Selina's dad, Father Jen, also commented on his blog on Sunday that Selina was now able to pass motion on her own, a sign that her body is recovering.
