American Idol Finale: And the Winner Is...!

The American Idol season finale was the usual mixture of pleasant highs (Bret Michaels, looking the picture of health) and embarrassing lows (Dane Cook, really?).

But we didn't tune in Wednesday for the parade of guest stars (Janet! Alannis! Christina!), or the return of seven of eight Idol champs and dozens of prominent also-rans for the big Simon Cowell send-off.

Actually we feel kinda sorry for Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox because they had to share the biggest night of their lives with Simon's last show—and that massive sing-along was really cool.

Can American Idol Survive the Loss of Simon Cowell?

Contestants come and go. The judges’ table has seen some turnover. But Simon Cowell‘s exit Wednesday after nine seasons of American Idol is clearly the most momentous change in the FOX talent show’s history. Where do they go from here?

Some wonder if the program, whose viewership dropped 9 percent this season, can succeed without its famously caustic judge.

“He’s the patriarch who rules with an iron fist, he’s the villain, he’s the dragon you have to slay to get to your fortune,” Katherine Meizel, a Bowling Green State professor and author of the forthcoming book Idolized, tells The New York Times. “Losing him, I think Idol might have lost the plot, literally.”

Jake Austen, the author of TV-a-Go-Go, about rock music on television, agrees that Cowell’s exit makes it seem like Idol is “in its death throes, despite it still being one of the highest-rated shows.”

For his part, Cowell, 50, seems impatient to get on with other things. While he told fellow judge Ellen DeGeneres this week that he’s feeling a bit sad, he’s also clearly excited for a change — telling Oprah Winfrey last week that he’s “on automatic pilot” a lot of the time. “I can’t hide it when I’m bored. I just can’t fake it,” he said.

Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Shows up on Another Samsung Device [Video]

The first time we ever saw a Samsung Windows Phone 7 device, we were pretty excited about it. And then we found out that it was actually a Omnia i8910. Naturally, our enthusiasm for the device waned. Since then, we haven’t heard much from Microsoft or Samsung about a future piece of hardware running the mobile Operating System. But now we’ve got one on video.

Thanks to the folks over at MobileTechWorld, who managed to grab some hands-on time with the Samsung prototype, we get to see Windows Phone 7, in its latest build, running on the prototype device. Yes, it still has some reminiscent features of an Omnia, but at least we know it doesn’t have the Omnia’s OMAP3 processor. Microsoft’s predetermined hardware requirements means that the 1GHz Snapdragon board is firing off under the hood.

Project Natal to cost $149 by itself, $299 with 360 Arcade, according to latest rumors

Would you be willing to pay $150 for a video camera peripheral that will only work with a $200 gaming console?

Microsoft hopes so--at least according to Edge Online's "trusted source," who says that $150 is in fact the price tag for a Project Natal unit, and that Microsoft is planning for offer it both as a standalone item and as part of an Arcade system bundle.

Project Natal, which is widely expected to be renamed at its near-final press debut at next month's E3 conference in Los Angeles, is a video capture device for the Xbox 360 that Microsoft promises will bring next-generation voice- and gesture-based gaming without the need for game controllers or headset microphones. It was first introduced at last year's E3, though so far Microsoft has been coy about a price or release date, saying only that it would be out in time for this year's holiday season.

The director Chen Ming Zhang other series “Fated to Love You” and “My Lucky Star” both got high tv ratings. “Single Princess” is a light comedy about old maids. Apple’s market cap surpasses Microsoft’s

Apple has long been the little guy in the Mac vs. PC debate, but that's no longer the case.

As of trading near the end of the day on Wednesday, Apple has passed Microsoft in terms of market capitalization, with a value of roughly $222 billion--about $3 billion ahead of Microsoft. Apple had been flirting with the milestone for days and had already passed Microsoft by another measure--a valuation known as enterprise value, which adds in debt and other factors.

The fact that Apple, not Microsoft, is the more valuable franchise represents a remarkable turn of events in the history of computing.

Consider this: In 1997, Michael Dell suggested that Apple should just close up shop and return the money to shareholders. Today, Dell is worth barely a tenth as much as the Mac maker.

That same year, Apple had to accept a $150 million investment from Microsoft. Bill Gates famously appeared at Macworld via satellite, dwarfing the on-stage Steve Jobs as he announced the company's commitment to the Mac.

Of course, all that was before Mac OS X, the iPod, the iPhone and now the iPad. The Cube and Apple TV aside, Apple has had an incredible run of products over the last decade.

Macs still account for fewer than one in 10 computers sold, but its market share has increased significantly in recent years and the company has built a consumer juggernaut that extends well beyond the computer.

As for Microsoft, the company remains highly profitable, but investors and analysts alike are concerned that Microsoft remains dependent on its Office and Windows franchises for the lion's share of its profits. The company has poured billions into its cell phone, online advertising and other new businesses that have yet to really help the company's balance sheet.

Firefox Home 'coming soon' to iPhone, will sync with desktop browser

Continuous client functionality, you say? Sounds like Mozilla might be just what the doctor ordered. The company has announced that its upcoming Firefox Home app is coming soon to the iPhone. The program will sync up with your desktop client so that you can go mobile with all your browsing history, bookmarks and "the set of tabs from [your] most recent browser session" going along for the ride. Not only that, but there's an "Awesome Bar" -- Mozilla's words, not ours -- that'll let you search through everything and predict options based on the available data. While not a "full" Firefox browser, according to the blog post (with the addendum, "either technically or due to policy"), the pages still load from within the app itself. No solidified release date yet -- it's still being polished for app store submission, but Opera's luck give us hope for a smooth approval. In the meantime, you can get a quick preview in the video after the break.

Apple developed second 4th generation iPhone?

A big report today from Digitimes, diving into supposed details surrounding Apple’s upcoming iPhone device. A few of the choice quotes from their interview with senior analyst Ming-Chi Kuo?

Apple initiated the iPhone 4G project at the end of 2008. According to our sources, Apple actually has another product codenamed N91 for the project, which offers less change from previous iPhones compared with the N90. It’s a parallel product to back up the N90 in case there are major delays due to significant modifications in casing, display resolution, digital camera support and so forth.

Show Luo in the midst of discussing a “Part two” concert in Singapore

The Taiwanese superstar was in Singapore over the weekend for his one-night only 3D World Live Tour held last Saturday

One night in Singapore isn't enough for Show Luo.

After a successful showing of the Singapore leg of Show's 3D World Live tour last Saturday, his management company held a press conference and a mini farewell party for fans before the superstar's flight on Tuesday.

Working with Singapore Changi Airport, the event was held at the Aviation Gallery. More than 100 lucky fans were allowed into the function and managed to catch a close-up of their favourite idol.

In an interview with xinmsn, the Taiwanese artiste said that this should be the first time any celebrity has held a farewell party in Changi airport.

Paula Abdul Appears on 'American Idol' to Say Goodbye to Simon Cowell

Although she's left the show after last season, Paula Abdul came back to 'American Idol' to say farewell to Simon Cowell.

She joked a bit at the beginning, claiming the real reason she didn't return as judge was a surprised pregnancy. "There's a baby backstage with Simon's haircut, and baby, it's your turn to feed him," she quipped to Cowell.

But, she did have a few affectionate words for the surly British judge. "Look Simon, my darling Simon, I've worked with a lot of people over the years ... but, if I'm being truly honest, none of them holds a candle to you, my friend."

Apple controls 70% of U.S. music download biz

DOJ could use iTunes dominance in possible antitrust probe

Apple Inc.'s iTunes music store controls a dominant share of the U.S. digital music market, a retail industry analyst said today.

The findings of NPD Group, a New York-based market research firm, could give federal antitrust regulators ammunition as they reportedly begin an investigation into Apple's music business practices.

According to NPD Group, iTunes' share of the retail digital music download business in the U.S. now stands at 70%, an increase of one percentage point since the firm last measured iTunes' position in 2009.

The market share of Amazon.com Inc.'s digital download arm, AmazonMP3, grew by four percentage points to 12% in the same period, said Russ Crupnick, an entertainment industry analyst at NPD.

The remaining digital music business is split among a number of smaller players, including Rhapsody and Napster, Crupnick said. "There are a bunch of places where you can get digital downloads that have 1%, 2% or 3% shares. Downloads are not their core business, but some people buy from them," he said.

"The key take-away is that more than 80% of the digital download business is in the hands of two major players," said Crupnick.

Verizon HTC Droid Incredible shortages? It’s Samsung’s fault

It’s no secret, that HTC’s Droid Incredible has been a major hit for Verizon.

It’s probably the first U.S. smartphone, to really challenge the supremacy of the iPhone. Even Fake Steve Jobs (Newsweek’s Dan Lions) decided to ditch his iPhone, and go Droid Incredible.

But no matter how badly you want your incredible Droid , you can’t get it now. Verizon and HTC just can’t keep up, and are telling customers that they’ll have to wait until mid-June, at least, to get one.

Demand for HTC Incredible is outstripping HTC’s ability to produce it. And today Verizon’s CEO Lowell McAdam named the culprit for that.

Foxconn Asks Employees to Sign Promise Not to Commit Suicide or Sue The Company If They Do

Shanghaiist got ahold of this memo being sent out to Foxconn employees, trying to help them deal with whatever working conditions is leading toward this recent string of suicides. It starts off good, then, well, gets not so good.

You can see the full translation over at Shanghaiist, but basically it leads with telling employees that they should take advantage of the help line, or the complaints line, or the trade union hotline. But after that, they note three bullet-points that employees "agree" to when they sign the doc: Agreeing not to "harm myself or others", and agreeing "that the company has acted properly in accordance with relevant laws and regulations and will not sue the company..."

Raymond Lam & Tavia Yeung support new series, absolutely no plagiarism

TVB new series "The Mysteries of Love" have been strongly criticized by Netizens that the story plagiarized from Japanese drama "Detective Galileo". Regardless of the criticisms, the TV ratings have not been affected with many local TV series fans supporting the series. The first episode received 32 points on average. Yesterday the cast and crew held a celebration for the good ratings, Raymond Lam and Tavia Yeung both supported the series expressing that the series had no plagiarism elements. Raymond supported the creativity, while Tavia felt that the love story is richer than the original version.

Raymond said: "For series, coming and going is the same few genres. The script to our series is quite creative, before shooting we were already criticized to have plagiarized, but the most important thing is that every role is portrayed differently and that audience like it." Have you seen the original Japanese drama? "No, I usually don't watch originals or remakes, otherwise my acting may slightly resemble the original. You have to tailor the character with your own style, including my older series "A Step Into the Past" is the same. Currently the producer is not encouraging us to watch it because the story is different."

'We're the new Brangelina,' jokes Katy Perry as she hits red carpet in sexy silver dress to promote Russell Brand's movie

Russell Brand and his fiancée Katy Perry revelled in the limelight last night at the premiere of his first leading role in a feature film.

The couple glided hand in hand down the red carpet for Get Him To The Greek in slightly offbeat style, as one might expect, with a metallic theme to their outfits.

Katy wore a silver dress slashes to the high with purple stilettos and Brand was dressed all in white with shirt unbuttoned to the navel and gold winklepickers.

Brand, 35 next week, is reprising his role from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but Katy seemed more excited than her fiancé at the Greek Theatre in LA.

Jesse James: Childhood Abuse Made Me Cheat on Sandra Bullock

Jesse James says childhood abuse led him to cheat on Oscar-winning wife Sandra Bullock with numerous women.

"I grew up with a huge amount of shame and fear and abandonment on my shoulders from a very young age and I think, you know, the way my mind rationalized [cheating], 'Well, you know, I might as well do whatever I can to like run her off cause she is going to find out what I am anyway and leave me anyway,'" the biker, 41, said in a Nightline interview that aired Tuesday. "The struggle within myself for the things that I did ...to damage marriage and my life and everything else, it's all me. I'm doing it because, you know, I've basically never felt good enough for anyone."

That's partly why he checked into rehab for a month in March.

He said he went in with "a little bit of an ego," but "after about two days I realized, 'Wow, I'm kind of more messed up than most of the people here.' It was like peeling an onion. Every day it was a new revelation about myself and the things I've been doing. I cried more in rehab in the last 30 days than I have in my whole life. No BS. That's the truth."

Kendra's Sex Tape: "It Broke My Heart"

Kendra Wikinson-Baskett's sex tape hits the Net today, and the reality star is hoping folks simply "don't press play."

"It bothers me because people are going to judge me and stuff," Kendra says in a sneak peek of the May 31 season finale of her E! show. "I just hope to God nobody looks at me like a porn star or something. I just hope they don't press play because that's not me. I mean, that was me, but that's not me now."

Of course, the "me now" part refers to Kendra being a wife and new mom, a fact she wishes the ex-boyfriend who sold the footage they made together when she was 18 had taken into consideration...

"It broke my heart because how can you do that when I have a baby?" laments Kendra. "I have a kid. I have a husband. It just sucks. It's the hardest thing to deal with right now, and it's hard on Hank [Baskett]. It's hard on him because it involves another guy and it's hard on him because of our son."

However, if there's one person who can help Kendra get through this ordeal, it's Hank.

Microsoft warns on Windows 7 upgrade tool

Parallels, known for using virtualization to solve consumer problems, thought it had a surefire new use for its technology.

Why not use the same approach it used to put Windows on a Mac to help ease the move from XP to Windows 7. The solution was elegant, helping users both make the move and even run older programs that weren't compatible with the new version of Windows. At first, the signs from Microsoft were encouraging; the company even invited Parallells to a Windows 7 momentum event in Paris to publicly talk about the program, Parallels Desktop Upgrade to Windows 7.

There was only one problem: the way the product works runs afoul of Microsoft's license rules, at least for most users. That's because the $50 software puts the user's old Windows XP system into a virtual machine, running alongside Windows 7, a concurrent use not allowed under most Windows licenses.

CNET raised the issue with both Microsoft and Parallels after learning about the product last month. Parallels said it is up to users to make sure they are in compliance with Redmond's terms. Microsoft, meanwhile, said it was talking with Parallels, but declined to publicly call out the company. Until now.

75% of Android OS devices still in North America claim AdMob

AdMob may be best known at this point for their new Google overlords, but they’ve also been finding time to carry out mobile market research. In their latest report they turned to iPhone OS and Android platform adoption worldwide, comparing unique devices running each OS. Turns out, 75-percent of Android devices they spotted were in North America, compared to only 49-percent of iPhone OS devices.

That’s despite strong Android popularity in China, where as of April 2010 there were more Android devices than iPhones. Apparently the most popular devices running the open-source Google OS there are the HTC Hero, HTC Magic and HTC Dream (aka the T-Mobile G1).

International iPad preorders delayed again: vague “June” delivery estimate

It looks like Apple’s international iPad supplies have taken another knock; the company had updated their UK, Canadian and other online stores from estimating a June 7th delivery of new iPad models to merely “June”. The move follows a previous change in delivery date for online preorders, which saw estimated shipping shift from May 28th – this coming Friday – to June 7th.

Apple themselves have made no official statement with regards the change in availability, but it looks like strong preorder demand has meant that those buying an iPad for home delivery shouldn’t necessarily expect it in time for June 7th. We’re guessing Apple will update the shipping estimates when they have a better handle on their stock levels after the in-store debut of the iPad WiFi and iPad WiFi + 3G at the end of this week.

2PM and SNSD release new version of Cabi Song MV

After releasing the much-anticipated Cabi Song MV by 2PM and SNSD for Caribbean Bay last week, it has met with a mixed reception with some applause for the hot scenes while others criticized it for being over the top.

Among the noticeable changes were two scenes centered around Yuri, the first being her cleavage and the second getting a lotion rub from Nichkhun have been switched with friendlier scenes. Otherwise, the MV is almost the same as the original one. So do you now prefer the new or the original MV?

Justin Timberlake Or Lindsay Lohan — The Next “American Idol” Judge?!

Can you believe that it’s Simon Cowell’s last night as the acid-tongued voice of reason on American Idol? Well, here’s something you’ll believe even less: Justin Timberlake are Lindsay Lohan are reportedly being lined up as his potential replacements!

While Justin — a former Mouseketeer and boy bander — managed to carve his tenure with Nsync into a wildly-successful solo career, it is scandal-bitten actress/sometimes singer Lohan who is the favorite to join the talent contest once Cowell’s reign ends with tonight’s Season 9 finale, a anonymous FOX executive squealed to London’s The Mirror on Wednesday.

John Travolta Kelly Preston Twins

The Snitch Circuit is atwitter with whispers that 56-year-old actor John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston, 47, are expecting twin sons later this year!

“They were ecstatic when they thought they were having just one baby,” an insider tells Star. “Now that there will be two, they can barely contain their happiness!”

The longtime couple — who already have a 10-year-old daughter — reportedly turned to in-vitro fertilization to expand their brood after losing son Jett, 16, to a seizure in Jan. 2009.

Verizon’s Motorola Shadow leaked again. Droid Incredible currently out of stock?

While we’re waiting for Verizon to officially announce the Motorola Droid Shadow, the smartphone has appeared on the Web for the third time now, in a new leaked photo that shows its left side.

The photo confirms that the Droid Shadow features a HDMI-out port. Also, according to this post over at Howard Forums, the following features are also confirmed: 4.1 inch display (WVGA), 8MP camera, 8GB on-board memory, 8GB memory card, and a Texas Instruments OMAP 3630 processor.

Reportedly, the Shadow is not as heavy as the Motorola Droid, and it should be available starting June or July.

30% of Netbook Shoppers Wooed By iPad Instead

If the ergonomics of a tiny screen, keyboard and trackpad weren't enough to convince you that netbooks will cease to be the phenomenon they were as tablets come into play, just look at the results of this study.

Polling a sample size of "over 1,000 distributed across gender, age, income and location in the United States," Retrevo found that, of people who'd considered buying a netbook last year, 30% ended up buying an iPad. (40% bought the netbook after waiting to see the iPad unveiled, while the remaining 30% bought a netbook without taking Apple's plans into account).

Keep in mind, the iPad was most probably a $200 upsell to these netbook shoppers, or more.

I don't think that these results alone are enough to proclaim the iPad a runaway success. But of those who were initially attracted to netbooks (I assume Retrevo meant, rather than a laptop), the features people found most enticing were "portability", "price" and "battery." In other words, if the iPad drops in price, it could be set with other important criteria.

Lee Hyori chosen as Korea’s best pop girl

Samsung Galaxy S will hit Asia in June, get Froyo later

Samsung has just let the cat out of the bag regarding its top of the line Galaxy S, which is set to make its global debut in Asian markets this June. Unsubsidized, this 4-inch beastie will cost you S$1,098 (or around $775), which might be a little on the steep side, but then this is one of only a pair of Super AMOLED handsets on the market and Samsung makes the other one. And in case you want an alternative closer to home, Amazon's German portal is now listing the Galaxy S for pre-order at €649, which works out to about the same price. The best news from today, however, is probably Samsung's official confirmation that the phone will be getting an Android 2.2 upgrade at some point in its future. No specifics are given as yet, but we'll take our Froyo whenever and wherever we can get it.

T-Mobile slide deck chats up myTouch 3G Slide's June 2 launch

After taking a look at this launch deck for T-Mobile's myTouch 3G Slide, it's becoming more obvious than ever that T-Mobile is taking the myTouch brand very seriously -- it's not just about a product, it's about an ongoing line of devices that all prescribe to the same socially-connected principles. In fact, with the effective loss of Sidekick to Verizon now that the ex-Danger team has thrown its weight behind Kin, you might even argue that the myTouch line is being positioned to take over where Sidekick left off, and that's evidenced when you see that they're referring to myTouch as a "franchise" throughout these slides.

Lindsay Lohan Returns From the Dark Side

Lindsay Lohan is gonna wash, bleach, straighten and style those legal woes right out of her hair!

After roughly 10 hours in the salon chair yesterday (who's got time for alcohol-education classes when there are follicles to be primped?), LiLo emerged from the Andy LeCompte Salon in Beverly Hills just after 10 p.m. a changed woman, debuting a slightly shorter and much blonder 'do for the roughly 40 paparazzi that waited out her double process.

They must really like hair. Ditto for sheriffs deputies, since there were plenty of them on hand, too.

"She wanted to make a fresh start," a salon source told E! News.

And the paparazzi clearly wanted to see her make it, as they began lining up shortly after Lindsay's 1 p.m. arrival for her hair transformation. Since anywhere Lindsay goes—even Fresh Start Lindsay—commotion follows, the owners of the salon were forced to call the West Hollywood Division of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department several times throughout the day to ask for a little crowd control.

'Lost': ABC says final images of wreckage 'not part of the final story'

So, raise your hand if you’ve spent the past three days obsessing over what was purgatory, what was real-life, for the past six years on Lost. No doubt, for many of you, a big part of your understanding has included an interpretation of the series’ final scenes of plane wreckage strewn across an empty beach, nothing but the white noise of crashing waves cutting through the deadly silence. Well, turns out ABC just threw those final scenes in there as a “visual aid,” and they didn’t actually have anything to do with the show’s plot. ABC told the LA Times that the network – and not executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse — added those shots of the beach simply to soften the transition from the emotional ending of the series finale to the 11 p.m. news and didn’t realize that viewers who had been obsessing over every detail of every scene of every episode might have considered the series’ final images as having some meaning. “”The images shown during the end credits of the Lost finale, which included shots of Oceanic 815 on a deserted beach, were not part of the final story but were a visual aid to allow the viewer to decompress before heading into the news,” an ABC spokesperson told the Times.

HTC EVO 4G to feature HDMI 1.4 docking station

Expected to be available at Sprint starting June 4 (for $199 on contract), the HTC EVO 4G will have a rather unusual accessory: an HDMI docking station that’s compatible with both the MicroUSB port of the EVO, and its HDMI 1.4 port.

The EVO 4G docking station will be available at Best Buy “soon” – most probably immediately after the Android 2.1 smartphone itself is launched.

This is good news, especially since micro HDMI cables seem to be a rarity in US stores at the moment. However, it should be noted that PCMag reviewed the HDMI-out capabilities of the EVO 4G, and the results were “disappointing”: most videos played on TVs didn’t look decent enough. Update: it looks like this has happened because the reviewer didn’t use HD videos, so he actually shouldn’t expect the results to be satisfying. Thus, as pointed out in the comments below, this review is of no relevance when it comes to EVO 4G’s true HDMI capabilities.

Apple Speaks Out About Foxconn Suicides

Foxconn has gone into serious damage control this week, with CEO Guo Tai-ming inviting 100 members of the press to view the facilities today. Even Apple and Dell, two companies whose products are produced in Foxconn's factories, have spoken out.

Apple released a statement saying that they are "saddened and upset by the recent suicides at Foxconn," confirming that they are "in direct contact with Foxconn senior management and we believe they are taking this matter very seriously."

While most of the media fixates on the relationship between Foxconn and Apple, for want of a sexier story, Dell meanwhile has also spoken about the suicides, saying that -

The Next iPhone Is Due Mid-June?

According to BGR's source in AT&T, the next iPhone will be available in June, and "not even late June." Such seems incredible, but not impossible, given that we haven't seen the new iPhone appear at the FCC yet.

Koda Kumi Beautifully Singing the Contrasts of "Yin and Yang"

It's been 10 years since Koda Kumi's debut and on her new single "Gossip Candy", which will be released on July 7th two very special songs are recorded. "Inside Fishbowl" and "Outside Fishbowl" are two songs with the same melody, yet the musical intervals and the lyrics are very different. At first the song was meant to be the title track, yet, before the voice recording, Koda wanted to challenge the matching of the key notes. "So how if I try both, high and low key?"

"While the perspective I could express changed despite the same arrangement, I wanted to write lyrics for each of it", Koda suggested and the making of two songs was eventually decided. Form the writing of the lyrics, over deciding on the melodies to the CD jacket design, this records has been a self-production by her,. "I want to keep challenging myself as a vocalist. The singing of the two songs is completely different, which was difficult during recording and will be difficult during lives, however, I wanted to express how much music can change", she commented.

Singer Dave Wang living with woman 24 years his junior

Veteran singer Dave Wang had been seen living with a 23-year-old woman in a three-storey house at a small village in Hong Kong, reported Hong Kong media.

According to local villagers, the couple lived in the run-down house 47-year-old singer rented and "seldom went out together, possibly because she is not very pretty".

The villager added that even when they travelled together, they would not behave intimately. The woman was also spotted cooking for Wang and cleaning the property.
