Reese Witherspoon & Jake Gyllenhaal: It's Over!

Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal know how to quit each other.

The couple is no longer together.

Sources confirm that the two decided to end their relationship about two weeks ago. People magazine actually reported the split back then, but reps for both stars insisted they were still very much in love.

Reps are not commenting this time around.

So what went down?

"They needed time to figure it out and they were on different coasts," a source says. "When they were finally together, they talked it out and decided they're not going to be together anymore."

One source insists it's completely amicable. "There are no other people involved," the source said. "The relationship just ended. It just fizzled. But they also wanted to be careful and private about it because of Reese's kids."

Our source also shot down recent reports claiming that Gyllenhaal was planning on popping the question. (FYI: Gyllenhaal seemed perfectly happy when we saw him just three days ago at Spike TV's Video Game Awards in downtown L.A.)

Gyllenhaal, who will turn 29 on Saturday, and Witherspoon, 33, never talked publicly about their romance. Unless you count gushing over Jakey's kitchen skills.

"Jake is a great cook," the Oscar winner told InStyle magazine in October. "He does a lot. We spend the weekends outside L.A, in Ojai, where I have a farmhouse. We have chickens and we grow cucumbers and tomatoes. I love it."

Earlier this month, Gyllenhaal made headline news when he used the g-word while promoting his new movie Brothers.

"I've learned so much from the kids in my life, and somehow they just become the center of your life and the way you look at things," he reportedy told Grazia Australia. "Obviously I exist in my girlfriend's world and my sister's world in a different way, but it's opened my heart and I feel much more grown up and want to be grown up as a result of it."

Even though they had no scenes together in the 2007 drama Rendition, they apparently fell for each other while making the movie.

Vanessa Hudgens Turns 21 with a Surprise Party

Vanessa Hudgens got a big surprise Monday night – a group of about 100 friends gathered at East Restaurant & Lounge in Hollywood to celebrate her 21th birthday.

Hudgens, decked out in a black mini dress with lace cut-out arms, arrived with beau Zac Efron in a chauffeured Audi Q7, and "when she walked in was completely surprised!" says a guest at the party.

Guests including Ashley Tisdale, Selena Gomez, Brittany Snow, and Corbin Bleu greeted her, while DJ Zen Freeman handled the tunes for the night, playing a mix of hip-hop and top 20 hits.

Efron gave a heartfelt speech – wishing Hudgens a very happy birthday and encouraging guests to have a fun night. Partygoers noshed on East signature dishes including the crab cakes and scallops on the half shell while mingling and dancing.

Hudgen's red velvet birthday cake was presented to her about an hour into the party. "She seemed overjoyed and grateful for the whole experience," says the guest.

"Zac and Vanessa were adorable together," says another guest. "They were smiling at each other and laughing and are really sweet to each other. Great couple."

Nexus One finally caught on video alongside its packaging

Frankly, we're surprised it took this long, but lo and behold, here we are with the first video of the Nexus One we've seen. It's just the all-too-brief and familiar boot animation, but thenexusone.com promises this is just one of many videos to come, and with any luck, a nicer video camera can be found in the interim. Also on hand is a few snapshots of the casing it came with -- don't read too much into that, however, as even the developer-only Google Ion had fancy packaging.

A Google Phone could be the death of Android

Without a doubt, the big buzz since the weekend has been over the "Google Phone," an HTC-built device called the Nexus One handed out to Google employees last week in what Google describes as a "mobile lab." Confirmed to be running Android 2.1, the Nexus One has once again raised the idea of Google selling unlocked devices directly to consumers. (Google has been selling unlocked HTC Android phones for some time, but only to developers.)

It would be a strange turnabout if Mountain View made this move, directly going in the face of previous assurances that Google had no plans to compete directly with Android hardware manufacturers. What's more, there are a lot of unanswered questions here.

The first question: How would Google bring an unlocked phone to market? There are really only three ways to sell phones. The first is to license spectrum from a carrier and become a mobile virtual network operator or MVNO -- a business model that time has proven to be a failure. The second, of course, is to partner with carriers and offer phones at discounted prices through carrier subsidies, which is more or less the case with every successful device on the US market today. The final model is to sell unlocked devices at full retail price that can be used by consumers on the network of the their choice. This is allegedly the model Google will be using to sell the Nexus One.

Selling unlocked devices sans carrier is a lousy business model in the States, however. There's no mass market for unlocked phones in the US -- just ask Nokia how hard it is to sell a high end phone with no carrier subsidy or support. Either Google would need to take a huge loss on every device to achieve a consumer-friendly price point, or hope to convince consumers to pay full price for an unsubsidized device -- even though Eric Schmidt in the past has argued phone prices need to trend to zero through full subsidies. What's more, an unlocked device will at least get you onto T-Mobile and AT&T's EDGE networks, but Verizon and Sprint both require phones that are approved for network use and can easily be locked out.

There's something even more fundamental that struck me as I listened to the "Google Phone" chatter, and that's the basic challenge of licensing to competitors. One reason Microsoft is successful in the PC industry is that it's never built PCs. Licensing to folks you compete with doesn't work: either your licensees do better than you do, in which case why bother, or you do better than your licensees, in which case your licensees wise up and go elsewhere. Apple's tried this twice: first with the Newton, where Apple did better than the licensees, and second with Classic Mac OS, where licensees like Power Computing did better than Apple -- eventually driving Cupertino to give up on the licensing idea entirely. Palm tried it, and it eventually had to split up into Palm and Palm Source. Nokia tried it with S60. The whole point of the Open Handset Alliance is to create a partner ecosystem of handsets and other devices, and a "Google Phone" that undercuts both carriers and licenses might well be the death of Android in the marketplace.

There might be a strategy here that allows for this to happen -- I can even think of one or two -- but until someone can give me a ten-word answer to how Mountain View can manage to build an ecosystem while trying to compete with it, I will remain skeptical that the Google Phone ever comes to market.

Big Bang members to come together as 5 again for ‘2010 Big Bang Concert Big Show’ next January

Big Bang will be back in Korea for a 40K audience strong concert after 1 year next January for ‘2010 Big Bang Concert Big Show’.

Coming 29th January to 31st January, the group will be holding 3 concert performances in Seoul Olympic Stadium. Big Bang has been holding annual concert performances every year since their debut, and 30 concert performances so far all sold-out concerts – they are known to have strong concert branding.

Especially for this concert, domestic fans will get to see the 5 members come together to perform again in Korea after doing solo and Japanese promotions all this while, and it is expected that there will be great competition for the ticket sales.

This year, Big Bang leader GDragon released and did promotions for his solo album ‘Heartbreaker’; SeungRi also released ‘Strong Baby’ and was busy with musicals like ‘Shouting’; member TaeYang recently released solo digital singles ‘Where U At’ and ‘Wedding Dress’; while TOP has been busy with drama filmings like ‘IRIS’; lastly member DaeSung has been prominent in the variety scene with appearances on ‘Family Outing’ – all 5 members have been showing their charms through various activities all this while.

With such dynamics in the group members, this upcoming concert is expected to show more synergy and showcasing the ‘Big Bang’ effect of the group.

Because the group has been doing solo activities for the past 1 year, they have also been working hard on coming out with ideas for their group performances for this concert for fans who have been waiting for the group to come together to perform on the stage together.

YG Entertainment said, “Whenever it is year-end or beginning of the year, we always get questions like ‘Where is Big Bang going to do their concert this year”, already Big Bang’s concert has become an annual event and the title ‘Big Show’ has got its strong concert branding. And we want to present to fans high-quality concert performances every year. ‘2010 Big Bang Concert Big Show’ will of course be show an upgrade from last year’s Big Show in terms of audio and video facilities, costumes and stage sets. We will work hard to meet the expectations of our music fans.”

Meanwhile, the ticket sales to ‘2010 Big Bang Concert Big Show’ will open in 3 windows from 28th till 30th December on GMarket (www.gmarket.co.kr).

Rumored couple Joe Chen Qiao En and Roy Chiu Ze competing to cry more

Roy Chiu and Joe Chen's intense hugging photo from "Lan Se Jia Qi" was leaked. Although both of them refuses to talk about their rumor, when it came to this hugging scene, Joe Chen was weeping on the spot and Roy Chiu couldn't hide his concern. He ended up crying too, letting his real feelings flow out. In the end, the director grimly shouted cut, saying that "Males shouldn't cry so much. You can only secretly cry when there's no one around or the audience won't be able to stand it."

Rumors has the effect of water for a drama's ratings. It can cause it to float or it can cause it to sink. Although both Joe and Roy are ignoring the rumors they have and still filming a drama together , for "Lan Se Jia Qi"'s promotion, it has been decided that the pairing will be kept a "Secret". From the production crew to both sides' managers, all of them are refusing to talk about the rumors, fearing that it will divert the focus away from the drama.

For Joe Chen especially, she's showing great determination in breaking into the China market. For this drama, she's being involved in even her own outfits design. In the past, she'll be have the "next-door girl" image in SETTV idol dramas and her look will be very simple and plain. This time round, she curled her hair stlightly and is going for a more classy look. A few of the photos where she curled her hair gave her the feeling of "Gossip Girl"'s female lead Blake Lively.

Workers also praised that Joe Chen is very good in the crying scenes. Joe Chen is also very proud of the fact that she don't use any eye-drops at all for the crying scenes and will really cry each time. Due to the numerous crying scenes though, she expressed "Everytime, after filming wraps up for the day, I'll be very drain from all the crying."

Due to the coldness of Hang Zhou, Roy Chiu has fallen sicked again. Earlier on, a group of fans from Shanghai came to Hang Zhou to visit the filming set and it was only 3 degree Celsius. The fans had to stand outdoors for many hours though and Roy was very touched. He said that he didn't expect himself to have so many supporters in China too and because he himself is sick and understands the pain, he hopes that fans will pay more attention to their own health too.

Kim Hyun Joong on dating a famous girl and seeing ghosts

On the December 15th episode of SBS Kang Shim Jang / Strong Heart, SS501's Kim Hyun Joong stated that he dated an unnamed female celebrity for 5 months. He was pressed on by Danny Ahn and reluctantly admitted it. He stated that during their relationship he went out to eat sushi with her and also went fishing. Fellow SS501 member Park Jung Min said, "I've never knew this before? By chance, were you dating a ghost?" The ghost part is relevant because later on the show, Kim Hyun Joong confessed that he has seen ghosts!

Hyun Joong revealed, "I've been disturbed because I constantly see and hear ghosts. ... It's a true story that happened in SS501's dorm. One day I heard a unfamiliar voice."

Ever since Hyun Joong heard the voices, he revealed that things that are unexplainable constantly happened. He then gave the cast goosebumps as he commented, "On one night, I saw a thing that I shouldn't have seen."

Furthermore, it was revealed that Hyung Joong showed an unexpected behavior because of his sudden scare. I wonder why he's seeing these things, did he eat a little too many egg tarts? It's ok though, you have the Asia Buzz Award Trophies to protect you at night.

Robert Pattinson's Secret Museum Date

We know where Robert Pattinson was today.

Across the street from our offices—at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art!

But he wasn't exactly checking out any exhibits…

Sources tell us that hottie R.Pattz and his stunning Remember Me costar Emilie de Ravin were there being photographed at the museum (aka LACMA) for Vogue magazine.

I'm told editors at the fashion bible are planning a multipage spread of the twosome for the mag's annual Power Issue that rolls off the presses just in time for Remember Me's March 12 release date.

"The theme is a date at LACMA," one source says.

Photographer Norman Jean Roy is said to have shot them in several spots throughout the museum, including interior and exterior setups. "It's kind of edgy in a Vogue way," the source says. "Emilie is wearing high fashion but it's like sort of tattered-looking. Rob is mainly in suits."

Pattinson arrived at about 9 a.m. before the museum opened. But it's not like art lovers—or Twi-hards—were going to get a good look at him during the day anyway. Locations were blocked off with blue tarps and surrounded by security guards.

“NJ Housewife” Teresa Giudice Slams Bethenny Frankel’s Nude PETA Ad

The Real Housewives of New York City’s Bethenny Frankel is showing off her slender — but pregnant body — for a massive animal rights billboard taking up residence in Manhattan’s thriving theater district. However, Bethenny’s baring courage isn’t winning the outspoken foodie rave reviews from one of her socialite counterparts in nearby Franklin Lakes, New Jersey: The Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Teresa Giudice.

“To quote Bethenny: ‘I just threw up a little in my mouth,’” the acid-tonged Giudice Tweeted of Bethenny’s new nude campaign for the fur-hating zealots at People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Teresa and Bethenny first bumped heads after the 38-year-old Manhattanite slammed the pampered mother of four in TV Guide interview, branding Teresa “whiny,” “unintelligent,” and by far her “least favorite Housewife.” Months have done nothing to shimmer down the incensed table–flipper — who sprouted off several paragraphs biting back at Bethenny:

“Help me understand this,” Teresa continued. “Bethenny is happy with her naked pic because she was ‘already pregnant’ at the time. She says she’s now three months along, but she did the shot in August. Even if she’s four months pregnant now, she would’ve been, like, one hour pregnant in the pic.”

Then added, “Someone tell Bethenny that sperm does not make you look fat, and I’m not buying the airbrushing thing in any case.”

Microsoft: We did copy Plurk's code

Microsoft said on Tuesday that a blogging application posted to its MSN China site did in fact copy code from a rival.

Microblogging site Plurk lashed out at Microsoft on Monday saying that the Juku application stole its user interface and code. Microsoft said on Monday that it was investigating the matter and suspended the Juku service on Monday night.

Microsoft has said a third party and not it or its Chinese joint venture partner wrote the Juku program.

"The vendor has now acknowledged that a portion of the code they provided was indeed copied," Microsoft said in a statement. "This was in clear violation of the vendor's contract with the MSN China joint venture, and equally inconsistent with Microsoft's policies respecting intellectual property."

Microsoft said it is now suspending access to the Juku beta "indefinitely."

"We are obviously very disappointed, but we assume responsibility for this situation," Microsoft said. "We apologize to Plurk and we will be reaching out to them directly to explain what happened and the steps we have taken to resolve the situation."

Plurk has not said what, if any, action it will take against Microsoft. In a blog posting on Monday, it said it is still evaluating its options.

"We're still in shock asking why Microsoft would even stoop to this level of willfully plagiarizing a young and innovative upstart's work rather than reach out to us or innovate on their own terms," Plurk said in the blog.

It's the second time in recent weeks that Microsoft has been accused of lifting code. It was forced to pull a Windows 7 download tool after that product was found to contain open-source code. Microsoft blamed a third-party vendor in that case as well.

The company also said it and its Chinese joint venture "will be taking a look at our practices around applications code provided by third-party vendors."

Chrome edges out Safari in browser usage

Google's browser has passed Safari in terms of worldwide browser usage--at least by one measurement.

NetApplications' measurements of browser usage share, which track which browsers individuals use based on visits to the company's network of Web sites, gave Chrome the third-place spot after No. 1 Internet Explorer and No. 2 Firefox for the week of December 6 through 12, according to a Computerworld story Tuesday. Chrome had 4.4 percent share to Safari's 4.37 percent.

Google released beta versions of Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux on December 8. Earlier, only developer channel versions had been available. Google plans to release the "stable" versions January 12, according to the Chromium development calendar.

Take these usage share numbers with a grain of salt. Even though 0.03 percentage points still is a lot of people in the real world, it is a small fraction, and a change in Net Applications' assumptions in August led to share changes two orders of magnitude more dramatic. Weekly statistics also vary: Although Firefox cleared 25 percent share in one week of November, it averaged only 24.72 percent for the overall month.

I've asked various browser makers about how trustworthy they view NetApplications' statistics to be. The answers generally are favorable but not ringing endorsements.

Regardless of the precise details, though, the Chrome trajectory is upward: its November usage share was 3.93 percent to Safari's 4.36 percent.

And although Google relied on word of mouth for promoting its original online search product, it's taking a more active role with Chrome. The latest example: a "Chrome for Christmas" site that lets people send invitations to download Chrome.

Firefox proved that a browser not bundled with an operating system can be successful, and Chrome could show the idea isn't a fluke if its growth continues.

Ueto Aya's Keitai CMs Most Popular

It was already announced two days ago that SMAP member Kimura Takuya and Ueto Aya had the most endorsements for 2009. Similarly, Japan's CM Research Institute announced yesterday that the Softbank CMs starring SMAP and Ueto were the most popular CMs of the year. This is the third year in a row that Softbank has placed first. Coming in second and third were au and NTT DoCoMo respectively, which are also telecommunications companies.

On the topic of SMAP, yesterday's Shuukan Josei published an interview with Kusanagi Tsuyoshi's mother. It is widely known that Kusanagi and Katori Shingo have a good relationship with each other, often talking on the phone together at least once a day. However, Kusanagi's mother denied reports that Katori is in charge of Kusanagi's spending. As Kusanagi loves to spend money, there were rumours that Katori looked after his money, often nagging at him for overspending or for spending money on alcohol. Kusanagi's mother said that Katori did say these things on a show, but it was only intended as a joke.

Leona Lewis “Avatar” Theme Song “I See You” VIDEO

Have you heard the tune that could make Grammy-nominated singer an Oscar winner next year? Talent show sensation Leona Lewis collaborated with the composer and producer behind Celine Dion’s Academy Award-winning hit “My Heart Will Go On” for the theme song to James Cameron’s new 3D space opera, Avatar.

The new song was written and produced by composer James Horner and producer Simon Franglen, both of whom worked on the signature song from 1997’s box office smash Titanic.

“I See You” will play over the closing credits of Avatar, which arrives in cinemas this weekend and has alredy generated Oscar buzz after landing a Best Picture Golden Globe nomination. The film tells the tale of an alien race defending their land against human invasion.

Bing Goes The iPhone. Still Great For Porn

Since the dawn of Bing, it’s been exceptionally good at one thing: Finding porn. Its new iPhone app, which launched tonight in the App Store, is no different.

By default, the app has a Safe Search setting of “Moderate.” Searching for “porn” this way yields several promising results. However, with just two clicks, any kids can turn off safe search and off they go! The porn results are nothing, if not impressive.

I love this for two reasons: 1) The app is rated 4+, yet it’s super simple to gain access to hardcore porn in a few clicks. This continues to highlight Apple’s hypocrisy when it comes to the App Store. Apps that allow you to lift up Asian schoolgirl’s outfits are just fine. Apps that make satirical references to public figures are banned. And now, apps that gives you hardcore porn at your fingertips are rated 4+. Sure, this content in on the web, and not in the app itself, but to a viewer, what’s the difference? 2) Bing continues to be a great resource for porn.

To be fair, Google’s iPhone app also allows you to search for porn. But, 1) It’s not as easy to search for just images with the Google app (image search is a plus for the Bing app) 2) the results are much less hardcore, and 3) It’s much less obvious as to how to turn off the safe search settings.

All that said, the Bing app is actually quite nice. The voice search feature (just like Google’s on the iPhone) works quite well. The app also features the standard Bing daily images complete with hover-over factoids. It also has a nice overlay on the main screen to easily search for Movies, Maps, Businesses, News, Direction, and yes Images. Find the app in the App Store here. It’s a free download.

Both images below taken on a search for “porn” with safe search turned off. As you can see, Bing returns many more great results. Badda Bing.

Taeyeon speaks about stepping down as leader & More Update

We previously wrote about SNSD / Girls' Generation member Taeyeon and her possible departure as leader of the group on SBS Kang Shim Jang / Strong Heart. Well, the episode has finally aired.

On the December 15th episode, Taeyeon talked about how it's so hard to control all 9 people as leader, it's a burden. She also stated that she's a very sensitive person so it's even harder for her to manage. She also talked about an incident.

The incident was where the girls gathered together for a 5 minute talk / meeting. During this talk, everyone looked at her and asked her why she's not talking with the rest of the group lately. They said, "What's up with you?" Which caused Taeyeon to go to her room and start crying. Sooyoung went into Taeyeon's room and wanted to console and talk to her. During this chat, Taeyeon said, "Ok, that's it. SNSD will no longer have a leader." When they shared this information with the rest of the girls, the girls all agreed and said that's fine / cool. They already assumed as if the group were acting without an official leader anyways. Taeyeon then said to the audience, "I thought the girls were going to say... NO! Please still be our leader but they didn't..." After she said that the audience had a big laugh. However, as they continued talking the members eventually said that Taeyeon should still be leader, but it seems she has a heavy burden on her shoulders as leader.

After this, Eun Jin Won aka G-One called her out by saying, "Taeyeon already knows she's still going to be leader, nothings going to change."

After that, there were some jokes headed towards Taeyeon, confirming that Taeyeon isn't stepping down but rather, she was just thinking about doing so. Hopefully the girls help her out in the near future so it's not so much of a burden.

More: The real deal about TaeYeon’s ‘retiring as leader’ talk on SBS Strong Heart

As reported earlier by Korean news reporter, there were talks about TaeYeon retiring from the leader position in So Nyeo Shi Dae on SBS Strong Heart.

Many fans were worried after the news. Here’s the real thing. And like TaeYeon mentioned on ChinChin, this is just the way the Korean news media work, strong titles for the show preview to bring in the viewership.

2PM’s Nichkhun to begin filming “Shining Diploma”

Last month, it was revealed that 2PM's Thai cutie pie Nichkhun will be staring in the upcoming film "The Shining Diploma."

A representative from JYP Entertainment stated,
"Since he will star in the movie, this will give him an opportunity to showcase his hidden abilities and grow as an entertainer. Currently, he is quite busy with his promotional activities with the rest of 2PM, but since there is only one month left until shooting begins, he is also attending an acting class as well. We cannot wait to see his role as an actor!"

And we can't wait either! With the sweet Thai prince trading his good boy image for a more charismatic bad boy look, it's making the wait pretty unbearable, but I guess we're all in for a nice surprise! Nichkhun and the rest of the cast will begin filming for the movie around January 2010.

Moon Geun Young to return as Cinderella’s step-sister

A new drama is in the making and Moon Geun Young is confirmed for the lead role. This upcoming drama is sure starting out on a good note!

The new drama is called Cinderella's Sister will air after Chuno which itself replaces IRIS in the new year.

One of the representatives for the drama stated, "We just got Moon Geun Young on board and are starting to get ready for the drama. She will play Cinderella's sister and be the villain in the show. The drama will be from the perspective of Cinderella's step-sister instead of Cinderella's point of view."

This is Moon Geun Young's comeback after a year and three months away from the spotlight after Painter of the Wind. Many netizens are waiting intently to see Moon Geun Young play the villain for once, a contrast to her previous roles.

This modern version of Cinderella will come to KBS in March of 2010.

Rihanna GQ Magazine January 2010 Topless Cover Photo

Rihanna gets raunchy with a topless, breast-baring shot on the January 2010 cover of GQ Magazine. The Grammy-winning islander continues to push her limits musically and physically as she promotes her fourth studio album, Rated R, available now.

“It’s very sexy, yeah,” Rihanna says of the shoot. “At one point [chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group] L.A. Reid came into the shoot, and he was like, “Rihanna, put some fucking clothes on!”

In the new interview with GQ, which features the pop star in a series of sexy poses, the singer revealed she’s been speaking out about what happened with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown to put what happened on that night behind her.

“Because I wanted to move on. I knew that was the only way I could have done it. And I wanted people to move on with me. ‘Cause the last big thing they know about me is That night. And I don’t want that to be what people define me as.”

Rihanna On Ending Her Relationship With Chris: “It took a lot of strength to pull out of that relationship. To finally officially cut it off. It was like night and day. It was two different worlds. It was the world I lived for two years and then having the strength to say, ‘I’m gonna step into my own world. Start over.’”

Rihanna On Herpes Rumors: “It’s not true. It’s a fucking scar. On my lip. That’s there every day of my life…..It’s not like it’s hard,” she explains. “It’s more ignorant. At first I was like, Are you serious? First I thought people were gonna definitely know that that’s not…But when I read it, and I see that people just buy into that…Like, the minute they see it, it forms something in their head….”

Can Chris And Rihanna Rebuild Their Friendship? “Maybe in like ten years, but it’s not something that I’m depending on. I’m not depending on his friendship.”

Rihanna, now 21, also admits she never graduated high school: “I wanted to. I just got really busy……”

Most Popular Free Windows Downloads of 2009

We've featured hundreds of free Windows applications over the course of 2009 that we hoped might bolster your productivity, workflow, or your PC usefulness in one form or another. Here's a look back at the most popular Windows downloads of the year.

As with 2008's most popular free Windows downloads, keep in mind that the apps featured here are chosen by the popularity of the associated post we published in 2009. Many were new, some were improvements to already loved apps, and others were simply new-to-us. Here's a quick look back at the 19 or so most popular Windows downloads of 2009:

Windows 7—from Beta to Release Candidate and So On

2009 was a big year for Windows, and Windows 7 was the most important ingredient in Windows' solid year. (In fact, you'll notice that several of this year's most popular downloads are related to Windows 7 in one way or another.) Sure it's not exactly an application but rather a full-blown operating system, but it only makes sense that a new version of Windows would top the list of Windows downloads for the year. It started with the Windows 7 beta download in January, which had a ton of hiccups. It was released, then pulled, then released again, then extended because of the trouble Microsoft had handling the demand. (Actually, we just think they underestimated the web.) Later, in May, Microsoft released the Windows 7 release candidate. You even jumped on the chance to try Windows 7's beautiful new themes.

Folks who were still using Vista also flocked to Vista's Service Pack 2 (32-bit; 64-bit) to keep their PCs secure and up to date.

Enigma Desktop 2.0 Released, Adds Installer, Widget Manager, and Templates

One of our very own readers released his popular desktop configuration as a installable utility that brings a handful of great customization and productivity tools to your desktop. It's called Enigma 2.0. Then Rainmeter, another very popular desktop customization tool, set Enigma as its default desktop. Fancy pants.

Portable Ubuntu Runs Ubuntu Inside Windows

Ever wish you could enjoy some of the finer tools available to Linux but stay comfortably in your Windows desktop? Sure you could run a virtual machine, but Portable Ubuntu for Windows runs an entire Linux OS as a Windows application. Better yet, it's portable.

Seven Remix XP Makes Windows XP Look Like Windows 7

The release of Windows 7 left a lot of XP users wishing they could get in on some of that snazzy new eye candy. Seven Remix XP is a free utility that does its best to bring Windows 7's comely looks to XP.

Ninite Bulk-Installs Great Free Windows Apps

Another result of the Windows 7 launch: A whole lot of us were rebuilding systems from the ground up, which often means a lot of tedious downloading and installing one app at a time. Ninite makes it easy, streamlining the download and installation processes for tons of the most popular free Windows apps, including most of our 2009 Lifehacker Pack.

Windows 7 Shortcuts Enables the Best Win7 Shortcuts in XP or Vista

Apart from all the new eye candy, Windows 7 really tickled our fancy with tons of incredible new keyboard shortcuts. For folks still chilling out with XP or Vista, we released Windows 7 Shortcuts, a lightweight utility written to bring some of the best new shortcuts of Windows 7 to previous versions of Windows.

Computer Repair Kit Packs Dozens of Tools in One Portable Package

By virtue of reading Lifehacker, you're more likely than not the most schooled person among your friends and family when it comes to fixing a bum PC. It's a dubious honor, because it also means you generally are the person who gets called when something goes wrong. Computer Repair Utility Kit puts a handful of useful PC repair utilities in one handy, portable suite.

Fences is a Seriously Awesome Desktop Icon Organizer

Like to keep items you want to access frequently easily accessible on your desktop but don't want to deal with the added clutter? Fences arranges your cluttered desktop icons into containers so you can clean up the mess into useful groups of shortcuts—or optionally hide them altogether.

AVG 9 Free Antivirus

We're of the mind that Microsoft's security tools are good enough—including the new and impressive Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus app—but that doesn't mean many of you don't get excited when the AVG 9 Free update is available. It's still the favorite antivirus app of Lifehacker readers (who doesn't love free), though we're sensing a slow but steady sea of change on this one.

Google Chrome—Stable, Beta, and Dev Releases

Google Chrome is just over a year old, but it's made huge strides among early adopters. Chrome came out with its stable 2.0 release in May, then followed up with a Chrome 3.0 release in September. Early adopters willing to try their luck in the beta and dev channels get more features, which we detailed in our power user's guide to Google Chrome. Whichever version of Chrome interests you most, it's clear that it was a pretty good year for Chrome.

Hulu Video Downloader Saves Your Favorite Shows for Offline Enjoyment

Hulu Video Downloader was a fun little app that lasted about as long as you could say Hu... that is, it doesn't work anymore. But when it did, it grabbed videos from the popular video service for your offline viewing pleasure, and you were eager to try it out.

Safari 4 Tempts with Good Looks

Safari's 4.0 beta release for Windows came with a lot of bugs and some serious eye candy, but despite the interest at release, we can't imagine many people still stick with Safari on Windows over, say, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc.

Namebench Helps You Find the Fastest DNS Server for Your Compute

Google very recently announced a free DNS service they boasted as fast, but rather than take their word for it, we pointed you toward namebench (and several readers also pointed toward the excellent DNS Name Server Benchmark). It tests various popular DNS servers to find what's really going to be the fastest choice for your system.

Google Earth 5.0 Beta Released, Looks Incredible

We're sort of junkies for maps and 3D, so when Google Earth 5 was released, we were pleased as punch. The update featured historical imagery, ocean maps, and improved world touring capabilities. Maybe we just like saving ourselves some dough in these tough economic times with a little Google Earth sightseeing.

And Then There Was Firefox

The notorious Firefox memory slow-downs may have some of us down on the reliable old 'fox, but that doesn't mean we aren't all still eager to grab the latest and greatest releases and stick with it as our default browser—whether it's the big Firefox 3.5 release or the Firefox 3.6 beta (1, 2, 3, or 4). We're looking forward to more great Firefox'ing in 2010.

Motion Detection Is an Effective, Dead Simple Security Camera App

If your webcam is sitting around collecting dust, try out Motion Detection, a free, motion-detecting security camera application. It'll snap pics and video when it detects movement, can upload the results via FTP, and more fun at-home security stuffs.

Thunderbird 3 Officially Released with New Features, Improved Look

Sure it was two years since Thunderbird's 2.0 release, but at least they didn't disappoint. Thunderbird 3.0 comes with solid new search and filtering tools, better looks, and a great new tabbed interface.

HandBrake Updates to 0.9.4 with Over 1,000 Changes, 64-Bit Support

Free, open-source DVD ripping and encoding tool HandBrake released a pretty saucy update last month with a ton of fixes and improvements. It's no coincidence that it's always been our reader's favorite video encoder, and this year's big-ish (but still not 1.0) update should only help keep it there.

DeskHedron Adds 3D Virtual Desktop Eye-Candy to Windows

Linux users have a killer desktop management tool called Compiz Fusion that puts multiple desktop management on a 3D cube that we've always been jealous of on Windows. Open-source application DeskHedron brings a similar three-dimensional desktop management tool to Windows users.

Windows 7 breaks 6% in global usage share

According to data collected by web metrics firm Net Applications, Windows 7’s global usage share broke the 6% mark over the weekend.

Here’s a snapshot of the data:

Note: It’s important to bear in mind that this data is based on visitors to sites monitored by Net Applications. It DOES NOT represent market share.

If you look at the chart above you’ll see periodic shark fins rising out from the smooth upward trend. These blips represent data collected on Saturdays and Sundays and indicate that the Windows 7 OS is more popular home users than business.

It’ll be interesting to see how this data changes over the holidays. We should see stronger Windows 7 usage towards the end of the month because more people will be at home on vacation. In the new year we should get an indication of how strong Windows 7 and Win 7 powered PCs has been during this holiday season.

Net Applications measures operating system usage by tracking computers that visit the 40,000 sites monitored for clients, which represents a pool of about 160 million unique visitors each month. This data is then weighted based on the estimated size of each country’s Internet population.

G-Dragon’s criminal investigations underway

After G-Dragon's sexual escapades in front of 12 year olds at his first solo concert (Shine a Light), criminal investigations for his actions are now underway.

Prosecutors have collected all evidence and video footage of the concert and stated to Newsen on the 15th:
"We are in the process of reviewing all charges and examining the data. At this point however, we cannot say how long the investigations will take."

The prosecutor added:
"Depending on the outcome of the initial examination, the offender may be summoned for further investigations."

G-Dragon just may be in for some serious trouble.

Idol Kris Allen Says Adam Lambert is Finally Showing His True Colors

Shocked over Adam Lambert's recent performance antics? Don't be, says American Idol winner Kris Allen, because there is more to come.

"Yeah, that's who he is," Allen told the press at last Friday's Z100's Jingle Ball at New York's Madison Square Garden. "Obviously, he couldn't do that stuff on Idol. And so you're getting to see the real Adam now."

Lambert caused an uproar for his sexually-charged performance on the American Music Awards last month, which led ABC to cancel his scheduled New Year's Eve appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live and his performance on Good Morning America. He was allowed to appear on The View.

"I thought it was Adam being Adam," Allen said of Lambert's AMA performance. "I'm going to get a shirt that just says, 'That's Adam.' "

As for Lambert, he says he has found a way to address the controversies through his music.

"[The single 'Whataya Want From Me'] is a great way for me to say to the public, 'What do you guys want from me? I'm doing my best,' " he said. "And the best lyric in the song is 'I'm a freak but thanks for lovin' me. 'Cause you're doing it perfectly.' "

The Idol runner-up just hopes fans don't stop loving his music. "I think that's my biggest fear," Lambert admitted.

Android Market grows up, hits 20,000 apps milestone

Rest assured that 2010 is going to be a big year for the Android operating system, with many new handsets finding their way to stores around the world (including Google’s own phone) and an increasing number of developers building tools, games and the likes for the fast-growing platform.

One way of noticing that the OS is poised for a big breakthrough at the expense of Windows Mobile, Symbian and other operating systems designed to run on various mobile devices, is the number of applications already available for download in the platform’s own application store, Android Market.

While Google doesn’t disclose publicly how many apps are available for installation, AndroLib has been chronicling the publication of all free and paid apps since Android was introduced, so it’s the closest thing to getting a confirmed number at this point.

Lo and behold, that number hit the 20,000 milestone just moments ago, a little over 5 months since it reached 10,000 apps. And as you can tell from the pie graph below, close to 38% of these apps are paid, while 62% of the apps cost as much as the license fee handset manufacturers need to fork over to Google for use of the Android OS.

This may pale in comparison to the number of applications available for the iPhone / iPod Touch (100,000), but the real battle for mobile OS dominion isn’t fought between Google and Apple, who are increasingly distancing themselves from more established players in terms of mobile Web usage and together are creating a whole new mobile advertising micro-economy.

Evidently, the number of applications available for download are only part of the story, but the numbers AndroLib has collected most certainly indicates that the Android Market is maturing fast. Just look at the growth curve in the first graph and the increasing amount of new applications that are published in Android Market every month in the second.

My guess Android Market will be serving 50,000 apps as early as Q2 2010.
