Amanda Bynes after 'Easy A': To retire or not to retire?

Despite having a certain susceptibility to teen movies — not that there’s anything wrong with a grown woman being able to quote most of Bring It On — I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed this weekend’s Easy A. Emma Stone kills it as Olive, a high school student who traps herself in an extremely slutty lie, and as her potential romantic interest, Gossip Girl‘s Penn Badgley evokes the above-it-all cool of, well, Jesse Bradford in Bring It On. (Yes, I am aware that other movies exist.) Hooray, also, for Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as the weirdest, warmest movie parents in a long while. I walked out of the theater feeling like maybe, just maybe, the kidz are gonna be all right.

But we are gathered here today to discuss the strange case of Amanda Bynes, as Easy A marks her first major film appearance since Hairspray in 2007. (I’m not counting Sydney White, since apparently no one did at the time.) Playing a tightly-wound evangelical Christian goody-two-shoes on a rampage against Olive’s alleged behavior, she isn’t given much to do but shoot Jesus lasers from her eyes and blast aggravated steam from her ears, but she slapped on a prissy headband and went for it anyway. Bynes has always exhibited less vanity than her fellow teen stars, a willingness to go for the punchline (even if she’s the punchline) that evades lesser comediennes. So I gotta ask: Amanda, what is up with all this retirement hoo-hah?

New Apple patent will let iPod Touch users make phone calls

PatentlyApple has discovered a few new patents Apple has filed for this year, and one stood out from the rest.

The Accessory Transceiver would allow iPod Touch owners to make phone calls.

iPod Touches could use the transceiver to connect directly or wirelessly, using the device to enable phone calling.

Apple filed for the patent in the first quarter of 2010 but it has not been granted yet.

It is also important to note that large corporations like Apple have thousands of patents, many for accessories and devices that never come to fruition.

Last month, a Chinese company released the Apple Peel 520, a dock for the iPod Touch which adds a SIM card slot and other functions, for $59.99.

Facebook Is Secretly Building A Phone

Facebook is building a mobile phone, says a source who has knowledge of the project. Or rather, they’re building the software for the phone and working with a third party to actually build the hardware. Which is exactly what Apple and everyone else does, too.

It was a little less than a year ago that we broke the news that Google was working on a phone of its own – which was eventually revealed as the Nexus One. It was about that time, says out source, that Facebook first became concerned about the increasing power of the iPhone and Android platforms. And that awesome Facebook apps for those phones may not be enough to counter a long term competitive threat.

Specifically, Facebook wants to integrate deeply into the contacts list and other core functions of the phone. It can only do that if it controls the operating system.

Two high level Facebook employees – Joe Hewitt and Matthew Papakipos – are said to be secretly working on the project, which is unknown even to most Facebook staff.

Jay Chou admits to ‘almost’ stealing Jacky Cheung’s album

Taiwan artist Jay Chou launched his concert "Jay Chou 2010 Cross-Era Concert" at the Hong Kong Coliseum day before yesterday – the climax of the concert occurred when special guest performer Jacky Cheung appeared, drawing wild cheers from the audience. Jay took the opportunity to tell Jacky some words from his heart: apparently, back in the day, after Jay listened to Jacky’s famous hit song "Goodbye Kiss", he began to admire and worship him – at one point, he had even thought about stealing Jacky’s "Goodbye Kiss" album from the record store. He also indicated that he was able to meet a lot of girls by listening to Jacky’s songs.

Jay indicated that the day of the concert was his mother’s birthday, so he asked the audience to wish his mother a Happy Birthday – then he immediately launched into the song "Listen to Mom’s Words". Then, after Jay sang one line from Jacky’s "Goodbye Kiss" as a means of introduction, the God of Songs himself appeared on the stage, eliciting screams from the audience. Jay laughed and stated: “Everyone is speechless, huh? Has everyone gone crazy with surprise yet?” Jay told Jacky that all these years, he’s had some words from the heart that he has always wanted to tell his idol face to face – that he fell in love with singing after listening to Jacky’s songs. He indicated that during his school days, all the girls loved listening to Jacky’s songs, therefore he learned to sing the songs so he could woo them. After hearing this, Jacky smiled and said: “A lot of artists have told me already that they grew up listening to my songs, so tonight you don’t have to say much about it.” [TN: haha -- typical Jacky humor: Jacky is indirectly telling Jay to stop reminding him of his age – lol]

Electronic Arts ready to embrace Android, but wishes it had an App Store

Thought EA had no love for Android or Windows Phone 7? Not quite -- it's just the existing market opportunities that the company doesn't seem to enjoy. CFO Eric Brown told the Deutsche Bank 2010 Technology Conference that the game publisher is actually quite bullish on Google's rapidly popularizing mobile OS and plans to 'position its mobile business' accordingly, but first he said this: "I think the next big positive way to push better growth in mobile will be the deployment of an App Store equivalent for the Android operating system." Since we're fairly certain Brown would be aware of a little thing called the Android Market, we figure he's talking about the same mysterious reason that caused Gameloft (which produces a number of Android titles already) to circumvent the Market in favor of their own online store. One thing's for certain on the EA Mobile front: the company really needs to update their smartphone games page to support a wee bit more than the "Google Android-Powered T-Mobile G1."

After Watching This Video, It's Clear the Universe Will End Today

There are plenty of amazing time lapse videos. This is one. But when you see it paired with Hans Zimmer's "Dream is collapsing"—from Inception's soundtrack—it goes from amazing to holy-fuck-the-Universe-is-about-to-collapse-and-we-are-all-gonna-die amazing. Play the HD full screen. Use headphones.

The time lapse segments were taken by Mike Flores and edited to match the rhythm of Zimmer's gloriously unnerving piece. Flores' images are beautiful, but when combined with Zimmer's music, on a big screen, with a big sound system or good headphones, the result is epic.

But then again, you can use Zimmer's music to make Sesame Street look like an epic tale of life and death. Now, if you excuse me, I'm off to try to wake up. Somebody throw me out the window, please.

Pregnant Miranda Kerr visits Orlando on set in Germany

He is busy filming in Germany while his pregnant wife has been furthering her modelling career in Los Angeles.

So newlyweds Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr were clearly delighted to see each other as she visited the 33-year-old actor on set yesterday.

Bloom, who was clad in his 17th century costume for the Three Musketeers film, only had eyes for his young wife on the set in Wuerzburg, Germany.

The smiling pair hugged and kissed in a break from shooting, with Bloom at one point whispering into Kerr's ear.

Bloom expressed his happiness at the baby news during a Munich photo call for the movie back in August.

'I'm really excited about it, it's great,' he said, referring to the fact that he could be away for much of Kerr's pregnancy. 'I'll go home as often as possible. She'll come out here too.'

Developers On Google Apps Marketplace: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Six months ago, Google launched its very own app store for enterprise apps, the Google Apps Marketplace, at the search giant’s Campfire One event. The idea behind the marketplace was fairly simple—using a set of APIs, third-party apps could deeply integrate their products within Google Apps and offer these free or paid apps to the productivity suite’s users. At launch, Google partnered with 50 startups and companies to provide these apps, including Zoho, Socialwok, Aviary, and more.

Since March, Google has been steadily adding additional apps to the store, including Bantam Live and Bill.com, and now counts more than 200 installable apps available in the Marketplace. Google says that there are 4 million Google Apps users (out of over 25 million users) with Marketplace apps installed on their domain. The Marketplace itself is a big venture for Google; not only is it a way to provide more functionality for Apps (and draw more users) but it’s also a monetization channel (Google takes a 20 percent cut of each sale). Google has been actively trying to get more developers to add their apps to the platform, even posting glowing testimonials from developers who offer apps on the marketplace. To see how representative these testimonials are, we decided to speak with a number of developers to see how their apps are actually performing on the Marketplace.

GV Mobile+ hits the App Store, finally

We have been waiting for this day for a long time. Not just because we love GV Mobile + so much, but because it shows that Apple has finally relaxed some of their App Store policies and will likely start being a bit more competitive with other platforms (hopefully). Now, back to GV Mobile +… it has been approved moments ago, developer Sean Kovacs tells us, and the price is $2.99. It is packed full of features — everything you’d want in a Google Voice native application, and we can’t wait until everyone gets to try it out. So, what are you waiting for? We have direct linked the iTunes app listing for you.

Note: if the link doesn’t work for you immediately, it’s because it literally just hit the App Store servers and is being propagated throughout the world. Just keep trying, ok?

2NE1 receives criticism for questionable first place ranking

Girl group 2NE1 rose to first place in various music charts soon after their comeback. The public is giving great attention towards this group who is sweeping charts right after they came back to the music scene, but what is the real meaning behind “first place?”

On various music charts dated September 16th and17th, it is readily apparent that 2NE1 is not first place. In numerous music charts, including Melon, Dosirak and Soribada, the first place song was J Lim and Jo Kwon’s “On the Way to Breakup” while 2NE1 placed first. According to Mnet, 2NE1’s favored music website, on September 16th, 2NE1 placed first, while on the 17th, J Lim and Jo Kwon placed first. Currently, the first place position is taken by J Lim and Jo Kwon.

ELVA defends good friend Jolin Tsai on plane incident

Pre-orders of Taiwanese singer ELVA's latest album "Miss ELVA" has reached its tenth day, where pre-orders had already hit 4,000. The self-titled track for the album has also been on YouTube for six days, and views for that track's MV has surpassed 140,000. Since ELVA's latest album has surged in popularity, the singer originally wished to show her appreciation to the generous love of her fans by holding an album signing this weekend until it was canceled because of a typhoon.

ELVA grudingly wrote on her Weibo microblogging account, "Everyone's lucky that I'm the rain goddess. Whoever said I was 'Miss ELVA'? There's a lot of 'water (symbols)' in my (Chinese) name." Since the broadcast of her MV, there has been a lot of both positive and negative comments left online. ELVA responded by saying, "I am modestly accepting all of these types of comments."

Intel wants to charge $50 to unlock stuff your CPU can already do

Hold onto your hyperthreaded horses, because this is liable to whip up an angry mob -- Intel's asking customers to pay extra if they want the full power of their store-bought silicon. An eagle-eyed Engadget reader was surfing the Best Buy shelves when he noticed this $50 card -- and sure enough, Intel websites confirm -- that lets you download software to unlock extra threads and cache on the new Pentium G6951 processor. Hardware.info got their hands on an early sample of the chip and discovered it's actually a full 1MB of L3 cache that's enabled plus HyperThreading support, which translates to a modest but noticeable upgrade. This isn't exactly an unprecedented move, as chip companies routinely sell hardware-locked chips all the time in a process known as binning, but there they have a simpler excuse -- binned chips are typically sold with cores or cache locked because that part of their silicon turned out defective after printing. This new idea is more akin to video games that let you "download" extra weapons and features, when those features were on the disc all along. Still, it's an intriguing business model, and before you unleash your rage in comments, you should know that Intel's just testing it out on this low-end processor in a few select markets for now.

'The Town' overperforms Friday; on track to top 'Easy A' and 'Devil'

Well, it’s clear the adult movie-going audience has not been served for some time now, for that starving crowd came out in droves Friday night to see Ben Affleck’s The Town. The film, which also stars Jeremy Renner and Jon Hamm, nabbed over $8 million, a number that could translate into a $24 million weekend — and the No. 1 spot on the charts. That’s quite a feat for Affleck, whose directorial debut, 2007′s Gone Baby Gone, grossed a total of $20 million in its entire run.

The Emma Stone-starrer Easy A also performed well on Friday, snarking up close to $7 million for a weekend that could reach between $17-$18 million. Both films far out-performed Devil, which earned less than $5 million on Friday night. The horror film produced by M. Night Shyamalan is now on track to gross somewhere in the $13 million range for the frame.

Spot four went to last weekend’s winner Resident Evil: Afterlife. The Milla Jovovich-starrer grossed around $3 million on Friday, a steep drop-off from last weekend’s opener. As such, the film will likely fall north of 60 percent for a weekend that will wind up just under $10 million. The fifth spot went to the fourth new wide release of the weekend, the kid-centric Alpha and Omega. Grossing just over $2 million on Friday, the PG-rated flick, which actually represents Dennis Hopper’s last work before his death (he voices one of the characters), will likely earn less than $9 million for the frame.

Come back tomorrow for a full box office report.

'Nikita' star Maggie Q talks her new hit series, kicking butt, and being a Jackie Chan protege

The fall TV season has just begun but it’s safe to say that Nikita star Maggie Q is definitely one of the breakouts. The actress, best known for her role in Mission: Impossible III, is both beautiful and badass as the titular assassin seeking revenge. EW talked with the star on a break from filming the CW action drama on location in Toronto.

EW: How did you get attached to Nikita? Did you audition?
MAGGIE Q: The process all happened really fast. It was literally four or five days and the deal was done. It’s like on Monday I knew nothing about Nikita and on Friday I was starring in Nikita. It was that quick.

You’ve had a successful movie career (Mission: Impossible III; Live Free or Die Hard). Did you wanna do TV?
It’s not that I didn’t want to, I just never thought about it. It was never on the radar. If you do TV, America is the place to do it. Literally, it was not even in my head. But I think that Nikita is a very big profile-raiser in America. The power of TV is beyond anything I could have ever imagined. So I thought what a great opportunity to get to know the younger generation.

Steve Jobs' e-mail Hints At Christmas Release For White iPhone 4?

As if there wasn't enough speculation going on about the Verizon iPhone and the talks and the growing din for the white iPhone 4, here is some news that is adding fuel to the fire. Apparently Steve Jobs has reportedly himself replied to an email written by a high school boy enquiring about the possibility of a white iPhone 4 reports Product Reviews.

The email sent by a boy named Nathan reads as follows - “Hello Steve, My name is Nathan, I’m a high school student from San Bernardino. I also happen to be one of your biggest fan and a total Apple fanboy and proud to be I’ve been saving up money to buy the new iphone 4. I want the white one but Apple said it won’t be available until later this year. I know you must be asked this question hundreds of times a day but do you think we can expect to get the white iphone for Xmas? I hope you can answer. Thank you Steve.”

While most emails in the name of Steve Jobs turn out to be fake, Jobs has been known to reply to his emails personally and this one has been rumoured to be the real thing, answered by Jobs himself. In a cryptic reply which raises more questions than it answers, the Apple chief is said to have written "Christmas is later this year".

While there is no way to prove the authenticity of the email, it is good news for white i-Phone hopefuls. Apple anyway has said that the white iPhone 4 shall be on market shelves later this year , but has yet not given a date for the release.

Sandra Bullock offered 'Never Forget' at Screen Gems

Sandra Bullock has received an offer for the film Never Forget at Screen Gems. The film, according to sources familiar with the project, say it is loosely based on the documentary On Moral Grounds, directed by Robby Kushner, which depicts one woman’s quest to reimburse Holocaust survivors who were swindled out of their heir’s insurance policies by a European insurance company. The studio has been very hush-hush on this project but has confirmed exclusively to EW.com that she’s been offered the role.

The film is one of several movies recently offered Bullock, but she has passed on most of them. Bullock has already said no to starring in New Line’s Our Wild Life, aka Elephant Orphanage, which centers on the life of Dame Daphne Sheldrick, an animal conservationist in Kenya who devoted her life to preventing the extinction of elephants. Julia Roberts had been rumored for the role, too. New Line is now regrouping before reaching out to a new leading lady.

Bullock has also turned down an offer to star in Disney’s The Odd Life of Timothy Green, a film from Peter Hedges (Dan in Real Life) that centers on a family whose lives are touched by an unexpected child.

James Cameron’S True Lies Heading To ABC!

James Cameron is heading to the small screen.

The acclaimed director’s TV adaptation of his 1994 hit True Lies has landed at ABC.

The network has made a script deal with penalty for the project. Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV are producing with Rene Echevarria as writer/showrunner and co-exec producer, according to industry publication The Hollywood Reporter.

The plot of True Lies — about a super-spy whose family discovers his real job — is territory that been touched upon in recent years in projects such as My Own Worst Enemy and the upcoming Undercovers.

If it gets the go ahead, the project will mark the Avatar and Titanic director’s first TV series after his Fox drama Dark Angel, which aired back in 2000.

James Cameron Heads For Mariana Trench to Film Avatar Sequel and Capture X Prize Simultaneously

Director James Cameron is building a sub that can plunge 36,000 feet beneath the surface of the ocean. If he can pull it off, he could win a $10 million X Prize and shoot footage for an "Avatar" sequel simultaneously.

The Daily Mail first reported the story, saying the sub would be made of composite materials and powered by electric motors. It would have to survive the immense pressures experienced at seven miles below the surface of the ocean, where Cameron hopes to shoot 3-D footage to incorporate into the second Avatar film.

The sub would be designed to explore the Challenger Deep, a 35,994-foot deep depression in the southern end of the Mariana Trench. It's the deepest known spot in the oceans and has only been explored three times - but since the first daring 1960 attempt in the Trieste, no one has tried a manned descent.
