Last night, Google decided to temporarily abandon the principles behind its famously spartan homepage in favor of something a little different: a background image, which has been a design element present on rival search engine Bing since it launched. Users predictably went nuts as their clean, bare homepages suddenly featured flowery hippo things and other colorful photographs. Countless tweets have complained about the images, and our story last night racked up over 200 comments. “Remove google background” is currently the fifth highest trending topic on Google.
Now Google has apparently decided that imposing a background image on users wasn’t such a good idea after all, and they’ve turned off their experiment around ten hours early according to a tweet from Marrisa Mayer, Google’s Vice President of Search Product and User Experience. Users that visit the Google homepage are now shown the normal design, along with a link that says “Curious about today’s homepage? Add your own background image now”.

Motorola Droid 2

Well look what we have here. It’s the Motorola Droid 2 live (sorta) and in the flesh, and looking more or less identical to the original Droid save for its updated keypad (thank heavens!) and more rounded edges. The specs, as Droid Life understands it, include an updated keypad, 3.7″ display, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi tethering, 8GB internal memory, pre-installed 8GB microSD card, updated version of MOTOBLUR (ninjaBLUR?) and a 750MHz OMAP 3 processor. HDMI out and a front-facing camera won’t be included with the Droid 2. Sadly the Droid 2 was seen running Eclair instead of Froyo, but if it’s any consolation — and we’re not sure it is– the Droid 2 has a newer, less intrusive version of MOTOBLUR (ninjaBLUR?) Wanna see more of the Droid 2? Then hit up the jump to check out a couple of pics and a video of the boot up screen, then head on over to Droid Life for more.

We can’t make any promises, but that’s certainly what it looks like – rumor has it that Big Bang’s quiet hottie Taeyang just might be returning to the stage for his solo return very soon!
Recently, one of our readers tweet-asked Sean, the second half of YG Entertainment’s hip hop duo Jinusean, when Taeyang would be making his return, and the performer gave a brief answer that should get fans tittering with excitement. The conversation really speaks for itself:

Motorola Milestone XT720
,
0 Comments
Some of you weren't too pleased to see Motorola's new Milestone hitting Europe with just 256MB of memory and a 550MHz processor, and it seems like Moto has listened. We're sure the XT720 would've done just fine running Android 2.1 with its previous spec, but we're hardly going to begrudge a free upgrade. The TI OMAP3440 is now running at 720MHz -- something Motorola had told us the phone was always capable of, though the company had initially opted to downclock away from it, presumably in an effort to extend battery life. RAM gets a healthy doubling to 512MB, bringing the Milestone XT720 more in line with its "premium multimedia" boast, while the launch date seems to remain unaltered: later this month for Europe and a big fat question mark for the USA.

Samsung might have entertained us with some trash talk about the iPhone 4's IPS LCD yesterday, but this stuff is of a rather more somber variety. Raymond Soneira, president of monitor diagnostics firm DisplayMate, has said that Apple's retina display marketing is inaccurate, because he believes a display that truly makes pixels indistinguishable to the human eye would require a density in the vicinity of 477dpi. The iPhone 4 has 326dpi, and by now you might be surmising that Steve Jobs flat out lied when he said that the iPhone 4's pixels are too small for the human retina to discern from 12 inches away.
But not so fast, says Phil Plait from Discover, whose résumé includes calibrating a camera on board the Hubble space telescope. He's done the math too and finds that the 477 number applies only to people with perfect vision. For the vast majority of us, Steve's claim stands up to scrutiny; even folks with 20/20 eyesight wouldn't be able to tell where one pixel ends and another begins. So it turns out Apple can do its math, even if its marketing isn't true for every single humanoid on the planet.

Bow down to Queen Angelina!
Angelina Jolie may portray Cleopatra, the legendary Egyptian ruler, in a future film.
With Jolie in mind, film producer Scott Rudin has purchased the film rights to upcoming biography Queen of the Nile, Cleopatra: A Life, USA Today reports.
Rudin's office confirmed to USA Today that the movie "is being developed for and with Jolie."
Stacy Schiff wrote the new biography -- out this November -- and says that the superstar would be ideal in the role. "Physically, she's the perfect look," the author said of Jolie, 35.

Matthew Wilder sees "kind of a weird parallel" between Lindsay Lohan and late porn star Linda Lovelace.
Not because of any onscreen attribute, mind you, but because of the way the media has gone about representing Lohan in light of her party-girl persona and run-ins with the law.
"Both of them grew up in this case where there was kind of this whole industry built around them," Wilder, who directed Lohan as Lovelace in the indie biopic Inferno and was with her on that fateful promotional trip to Cannes, says in an exclusive interview airing tonight on E! News.

T-ara SoYeon reveals that she has envy towards So Nyeo Shi Dae.
Recently on cable channel tvN talk show ‘Taxi’, T-ara members were featured and SoYeon said, “When I look at So Nyeo Shi Dae while promoting as T-ara, I have felt envy. When I first debuted, the cheers I have when I perform on stage and the attitude of the staff compared to when I performed with So Nyeo Shi Dae are different and I am envious. I thought to myself if T-ara can be successful quickly, it would be good.”
Meanwhile, SoYeon used to train under SM Entertainment and was also casted to be in So Nyeo Shi Dae but she left the group.

Jay Park

The widely followed Jay Park is back and better than ever with his sixth Youtube video, and fans of music, breakdancing and Jay in general are going to love this one – we get to enjoy a collection of his most recent bboy battles (around four minutes) and hear him talk about his official fanclub name (another four minutes) and then listen to him “cover” Taylor Swift (two minutes) to add up to a nearly ten minute long video!
Breakdancing aficionados get a good taste of this bboy’s skills and his creative improv style. It’s pretty incredible to see Jay doing all sorts of tricks, from sweeping the floor with his head (1:08) to bouncing everywhere with flips and twists (3:51).
No matter which three-legged sentry turret you pick, Steam games run fine if it houses a decent graphics card. That said, stick this in your breech and shoot it -- the latest edition of Valve's hardware survey shows the glossy white Apple models outgun Windows counterparts in a number of areas. Whereas the majority of Windows PCs have 2GB or 3GB of memory, 53 percent of Macs sport 4GB of RAM -- though that's likely attributable to the popularity of 32-bit OS. While 17 percent of Windows users are also stuck with a single CPU, over 90 percent of Macs running Steam have a dual-core... and internet connectivity's biased towards Mac gamers too, with 65 percent reporting download speeds over 2Mbit compared to under half of PCs. Of course, where it truly counts for games, Macs still sorely lag behind; the top six Windows GPUs reported are all capable performers, but only 32.5 percent of Macs surveyed had anything but a bottom-barrel graphics card. Get with the times, Apple -- even your mobile guys know gaming's not a niche anymore.

Microsoft Europe’s communication team has used its Twitter account to make fun of Google’s latest search page feature: the ability to add background images to said page, a feature that has characterized Microsoft’s Bing search service since its debut.
Google yesterday temporarily added a default background image to make more people aware of the new feature, which apparently prompted Microsoft Europe to tweet: “We’ve lost a background image, if found please return to bing.com ”.
There are a lot of things to be excited about in Windows Phone 7. Pornography—or anything "sexually suggestive"—won't be among them. In a preemptive strike against in-app boobs, Microsoft's application certification requirements mandate squeaky clean content.
In many ways it's a smart move for Microsoft, especially in light of the backlash that hit Apple for retroactively banishing mature content from the App Store. The explicit language forbidding explicit content:
"Images that are sexually suggestive or provocative, Content that generally falls under the category of pornography, or Content that a reasonable person would consider to be adult or borderline adult content."

Bing will now pull up the latest updates from Facebook and Twitter on your search terms.
On Wednesday, Microsoft's search engine officially launched its social site, which taps into public and shared updates from Facebook and the latest tweets from Twitter to display real-time results for your search topics.
The social search engine works just like Bing's regular search engine. Simply enter your keyword, and you'll see a list of current and recent posts from the two social networks. Each post offers a link to a Web site--anything from a static page to a YouTube video--where you can view more on a topic.

It seems like the entire United Kingdom (at least those who aren't out partying it up with Patsy Kensit at the Met Bar) has emailed us in the last two minutes to clue us in on the fact that O2 has posted its new iPhone 4 pricing. It looks like your beloved "unlimited 3G" plans of are a thing of the past -- instead, you'll be paying for up to 1GB of data of month. As you approach the limit, a text message will notify you and let you purchase an 500MB for £5 or 1GB for £10. How very AT&T of them, eh? But don't worry, kids! Texting is still unlimited.

We're seeing so, so many Android tablets dropping every day, so few of which seem to deliver on their promises, that we're getting a bit jaded about the things. But, every now and again we see another one that makes our ears perk up again and make it all feel just like the first time. Such is the Malata SMB-A1011, a 10-inch, 1024 x 600 capacitive tablet running a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor and paired with Tegra 2 graphics. Though we saw a very similar model running Windows 7 at Computex, this one has up to 2GB of system memory and up to 32GB of storage, with microSD expansion and 1080p output over HDMI, along with WiFi b/g and Bluetooth wireless. It's all slathered with Android 2.1, making this a slab we'd certainly make room for in our respective man and woman purses. At this point we know nothing about pricing or availability, but we do know enough to not get our hopes up too high.
