Where Microsoft's Money Really Comes From

It's no shock to see that with unglamorous but vital products like Windows and Office, Microsoft is basically printing money. But where's the Xbox? The Zune? Windows Mobile? Bing? Oh, they're there. You just have to look a little closer.

Microsoft's most visible products that aren't Windows and Office fall under two divisions: Entertainment and Devices, and Online Services. Xbox, Zune (both services and devices), cellphone software and to some extend Media Center all fall under E&D, which has been skipping from minor profit to minor loss for years. Online services, like Bing and Hotmail, have a more consistent track record, steadily bleeding money from the company month after month, with only the slightest hints of stopping.

Lady Gaga wears hundreds of pearls glued to her face at amfAR charity gala

It's certainly a change from the traditional pearl necklace.

Dispensing with a string, Lady Gaga wore hundreds of white pearls glued to her face, legs and body as she arrived for a charity gala in New York last night.

With her skin painted white she wore just a pearl encrusted bikini, cropped jacket, hat and super high platform boots.

Who brought their mum? Madonna, 51, goes clubbing with Jesus Luz, 23, and his pals

She's been hitting the clubs since her Studio 54 days in New York in the Seventies. So Madonna could be forgiven for wanting to put her feet up these days with a cup of cocoa.

But the mother of four obviously feels there is still enough petrol in the tank to party. And who better to hit the dance floor with in Rio De Janeiro last night than toyboy lover Jesus Luz?

Unfortunately, the singer looked more like a reluctant mum dragged along to a frat party as she watched Jesus, 23, strip to the waist and dance in the sweaty venue with his friends.

While Jesus got into the groove, Madge stuck to the sidelines, leaving the dancing to the much younger club-goers.

John Mayer Breaks Down Onstage Over Playboy Debacle

Tonight, John Mayer couldn't help but say what he needed to say.

The Grammy winner, whose Twitter page is at this moment largely occupied by a detailed apology for using the N-word during his already graphically informative sit-down for Playboy's March issue, broke down Wednesday during the "Gravity" portion of his show in Nashville.

Near the end of the concert, he stopped playing, apologizing to his bandmates for the interruption.

Get the audio of Mayer's breakdown after the jump.

"I quit the media game. I'm out. I'm done," a choked-up Mayer told the audience at the Sommet Center, according to exclusive footage obtained by E! News. "I just want to play my guitar."

Then, after a lengthy pause, he returned to his guitar solo.

His onstage sentiment resembled his last tweet from the day: "I just wanted to play the guitar for people. Everything else just sort of popped up and I improvised, and kept doubling down on it..."

As he had just reminded Twitter user "adilla": "They don't make rehab centers for being an a-hole."

Heidi Montag Nude in Playboy: Coming Soon (Again)!

We've already seen Heidi Montag in Playboy. Recently, in fact.

Then again, that was pre-eyebrow lift, nose job revision, fat injections in cheeks, lips and chin reduction, neck liposuction, ears pinned back, breast augmentation revision; liposuction on her waist, hips and thighs, and buttock augmentation.

Therefore, it'll be like an entirely different girl posing next time!

While the '09 Heidi Montag nude Playboy pictorial left no doubt that she'd undergone outrageous plastic surgery beforehand, the 2010 should outdo that.

Tenfold.

Enterprises ditch Microsoft's IE6, go big for IE8

PC system information-tracking network says IE8 a bigger hit than most think

Contrary to popular belief, enterprises are not wedded to Microsoft Corp.'s old and buggy Internet Explorer 6 but have largely dumped the browser, a researcher said today.

IE6 is running on only 8.3% of the PCs powered by Windows XP that Devil Mountain Software's community-based Exo.performance.network (XPnet) tracks, said Craig Barth, the company's chief technology officer. In comparison, 19.4% of the XP machines are running IE7, while an amazing 72.2% run IE8, Microsoft's newest browser.

"I'm shocked," said Barth today. "IE6 is just a single-digit browser on XP in the enterprise."

Devil Mountain sniffs out system information, including installed applications, from the 23,000 PCs that run the XPnet agent, a small program that regularly "phones home" with the machine owner's permission. Devil Mountain recently reconfigured the XPnet agent so that it could determine the version of IE installed on the PC.

On those computers running Windows Vista, 12.8% have IE7, the browser that shipped with the operating system in 2007, but 86.5% have IE8, which Microsoft launched in March 2009.

Garmin-Asus nuvifone A50 (Android) and M10 (Windows Mobile) announced

Garmin-Asus has just announced its first Android smartphone – the Garmin-Asus nuvifone A50, which, according to the joint-venture, offers “more location technology” than any other Android handset.

The nuvifone A50 features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and comes with many of the features you’ll find in high-end Gamrin navigations devices, like turn-by-turn navigation, voice prompted directions, and lane assist.

The smartphone’s maps are preinstalled on the device, which means that you’ll be able to use navigation features even when out of cell phone coverage. The A50 further supports cityXplorer maps, and comes with a “custom Garmin car mount.”

There’s also a suite of apps offered via Garmin-Asus’ connected servers, providing real-time info on weather, traffic, flight status, safety cameras or fuel prices.

Raymond Lam & Charlene Choi a bickering pair, Raymond strikes at Ah Sa's chest area

Yesterday Charlene Choi (Ah Sa), Raymond Lam, Kenny Kwan, Wong Cho Lam, Ken Hung, Christine Kuo, Kathy Tong, Steven Cheung, Katy Kung, Jessie Shum and Di Lung attended the blessing ceremony for new film "Emerald Pearl" a co-production between Shaw Brothers film production company and EEG.

Ah Sa reveals that she'll be playing as a bickering couple with Raymond Lam. In reality, she and Raymond are always revengeful too, just like a few days ago when the two were shooting for a snatching jade scene. The scene talked about Raymond going forward and violently tried to snatch Ah Sa's jade, the director requested that Raymond snatch with his hand near her chest area, but because Raymond had a large palm, he implied that Ah Sa was flat chested, making her jump in anger, she said: "Sometimes he's so bad, always making fun of me. A real bad boy! (Shooting with Raymond are there any sparks?) I need to think of something to prank him back with, I can withstand his electricity."

As for Raymond, he said that Ah Sa is really fun to play with, he said: "I said she's flat chested? Just playing, Ah Sa is fun to play with. This is a comedy, most of the cast are very funny people, making a light happy atmosphere. I really thank them because I'm also shooting for another modern film, I haven't slept for a few days, so with them laughing a bit around me, I'm not as sleepy."

Ellen Will Leave “American Idol” If Howard Stern Is Hired To Replace Simon

Howard Stern would be happy to replace Simon Cowell on the American Idol judging panel — if program bosses promise to pay him enough — but Idol panelist Kara DioGuardi isn’t the only series judge that feels casting the notorious shock jock would be grave mistake.

The Chicago Sun-Times claims freshman A.I. expert Ellen DeGeneres has threatened to leave the series if Stern joins the team.

The paper writes: “According to a veteran ‘Idol’ staffer, ‘Ellen has told just about anyone who will listen that she’s totally opposed to the [Stern] idea,” making it clear if he is hired, she’d leave the show……’”

But Ellen may not have to worry about packing up her dressing room just yet, because a Fox executive says the chances of Howard being hired are next to nil.

Robert Pattinson Praises Emile de Ravin, Speaks on First Impression

His heart may still belong to Kristen Stewart, but Robert Pattinson's words of praise are all about a different actress these days.

That's just part of the job for an actor promoting a new movie, as Pattinson stars in Remember Me, scheduled for a March 12 release.

He'll share both the screen and a few lip locks with Emilie de Ravin, who portrays his character's love interest in the drama. Earlier this week, Robert spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the Lost star.

Will a New Baby Save Brangelina?

Just when you think you've heard everything, Life & Style sets another low (high?) in celebrity gossip reporting. Kudos to that fine supermarket publication.

Apparently, the rough patch encountered by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie is about to come to an end, for one very cute, cuddly reason: Brangelina Baby #7!

That's right! "Brad confirms" (no he doesn't) that "another kid" is on the way (likely for his barber and his wife) in the new issue of this reputable tabloid.

To think that just weeks ago, he was in love with Jennifer Aniston again. This guy makes some quick turnarounds regarding relationships and parenting.

Things like this particular story may be harmless enough, but do make you wonder how people buy these magazines or at least take them seriously in any way.

Some of the more serious, slanderous allegations made over Brad and Angelina's love life in recent weeks have actually resulted in a lawsuit by the hot couple.

In news about them that's actually true, Angelina Jolie is awesome. She's visiting Haiti and donating obscene sums of money to their earthquake relief efforts.

Yahoo Goes After Y.COM Trademark (Again)

On 12 January 2010, Yahoo applied for a trademark on Y.COM, a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office reveals.

And this isn’t exactly the first time they’ve tried to secure that particular character mark: the company actually filed an initial application for Y.COM to the USPTO back in August 2005.

The only difference between both applications that I can tell is that the most recent one is a bit more limited in scope, as the ‘Goods & Services’ description in the application is for one specific category only, whereas in the 2005 application there were three.

In the new filing, Yahoo seems to focus more on its search business (or what’s left of it):

Nokia N98 QWERTY-style slider leaked?

Being completely upfront, we can’t quite bring ourselves to believe that this is actually Nokia’s next smartphone, the N98.  However we’re suckers for a good render and BeGeek reckon they’ve “confirmed internally” that this is in fact a 4-inch smartphone that Nokia intend to launch in time for the holiday 2010 season.

Their source claims that the Nokia N98 has 32GB of storage, and we’re guessing from the single image that it’s a touchscreen device too.  OS looks to be S60, going by the homescreen panels, and BeGeek have heard a €450 price tag too ($619).

Nokia Symbian^3 2010 plan detailed: 12MP N8-00 tipped for Summer

Slightly more believable than the N98 render from earlier today comes word on the first range of Symbian^3 devices Nokia plan to push out in 2010 and the range nomenclature the Finnish company is shifting to. According to French site Tom’s Guide, Nokia are planning to drop their Classic and XpressMusic differentiators and instead settle on five letter-prefix segments, as well as launch a device – the N8-00 – a 12.3-megapixel smartphone with HDMI and HD video recording.

The Nokia N8-00 is apparently expected to arrive this coming summer, and will be full touch-enabled and offer multitouch support on a 3.5-inch display. As well as being the flagship Symbian^3 handset, it will potentially offer DivX support as well as 720p 30fps HD video recording.

Arashi's Ohno to Star in Live-Action TV Kaibutsu-kun

The Sankei Sports newspaper reports that Arashi band member Satoshi Ohno will star in a live-action television adaptation of Fujiko Fujio A's Kaibutsu-kun supernatural action manga this April. The story follows the prince of Kaibutsu Land, Kaibutsu-kun, as he decides to go to the human world as part of his training to become the king. Fujiko Fujio A is best known for co-creating the classic manga Doraemon.

The new series, which is the first live-action adaptation of the manga after two animated series, will run on the NTV network. The production will use computer graphics and special makeup to transform Ohno into a kaibutsu (monster).

The original manga ran in Shonen Gahosha's Shonen Gaho magazine from 1965 and 1969. Later incarnations ran in Shonen Gahosha's Weekly Shonen King (1967-1969) and Shogakukan's CoroCoro Comic (1980-1982). Tokyo Movie Shinsha animated the story into a 1968-1969 television series and Shin'ei Doga animated a remake from 1980 to 1982. There was also an anime film in 1981.

Gallen Lo angered by false and misleading reports by "Next Magazine", vows for legal action

Earlier there were reports that said Gallen Lo was rather indifferent towards his ex-wife (Fong Man Yi) and son, but is very straightforward with his current wife Sophie Su. Yesterday Gallen and Fong Man Yi both issued a statement about the false reports. Gallen directly said that "Next Magazine" is really fabricating facts to mislead the public, he plans to seek legal action to prosecute the relevant reports.

Gallen expressed in his statement: "The Hong Kong Media "Next Magazine" recently published lengthy negative news about me without my consent. The content and individuals mentioned in the published news were all made up and fabricating facts to mislead the public in to believing the false. They also used wicked words to mislead and confuse the public! It is an irresponsible action! "Next Magazine" actions has personally done serious libel, defamation and injury to my family and I. They also seriously affected and injured my status as an artist and public figure image!" In the statement, Gallen also mentioned that he felt angered and regretful, expressing that he will seek legal action on the relevant reports.

Shivering Lady Gaga braves the snow in a flimsy ball gown... but a coat might have been better

Her outrageous outfits have helped make Lady Gaga a global superstar.

But while her dress to shock attitude has won her legions of fans, it isn't as useful when it comes to keeping warm.

The singer visibly shivered as she braved the snowy weather in New York in nothing more than a flimsy ballgown yesterday.

As snow drifted down around her, Lady Gaga crossed her arms over her chest against the cold.

The 23-year-old didn't even have underwear to keep her warm - instead of a bra she wore crosses of tape on her breasts.

Jamie Foxx: “If Asked, I’d Do ‘American Idol’”

Jamie Foxx is sounding off on rumors that he is in the running to take over Simon Cowell’s place on the judging panel of American Idol.

The 42-year-old Oscar winner — who appears in Garry Marshall’s new romantic comedy Valentine’s Day — says he’d be delighted to join the team of television’s most watched program, but notes that he hasn’t been approached by Idol producers.

Jamie tells Parade.com: “Everybody keeps asking me. Of course I would take over for Mr. Cowell. If they officially ask, I’m there. I’m just waiting. I just think it’s amazing that on American Idol those guys like Simon and my man, Randy, make so much dough from watching people that are talented. That’s amazing to me and I could sit there and listen just like they do.”

Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler: On (Again)?

Are Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler back together? Are they even together at all? Were they ever apart? These questions are all very much unclear.

Well, to us anyway. Star has no problem asserting that Jen and Gerard are once again an item ... even if they probably never really were to start with.

Apparently The Bounty Hunter co-stars are holed up in a $9,000/night suite, and have been sipping margaritas - wait, wait for it - at night! OMFG!

It's her "second chance romance" in Mexico, after all, and she's making the most of it. You can pretty much cement their status as a couple now...

Microsoft's MWC digs come together, 'Ready, Set' is the theme (and Steve Ballmer's hosting)

The fine city of Barcelona is abuzz this week as final preparations for Mobile World Congress fall into place -- and as you probably know by now, we're all expecting Microsoft to pull out all of the stops to introduce Windows Mobile 7. Just like last year, Redmond is renting out the Catalonia Barcelona Plaza Hotel across the street from the convention center to help kick off its announcements in style, and reader Javier has been kind enough to send in some shots of the facility getting done up in Microsoft livery for the event. There aren't any spoilers here, sadly, but we can see that the company's "Windows Phone" branding figures prominently (we should hope as much) and they're using the catchphrase "Ready. Set." to get everyone fired up. You might say the "wow" starts now -- or, you know, you might not. Either way, be sure to keep it tuned right here throughout next week's festivities, because we'll be bringing you tons of coverage live!

If you're as curious as we are about Microsoft's plans, here's when the event (which you can bet your bottom euro we'll be liveblogging) kicks off on Monday, February 15

Facebook Still Rules, But Rivals Gain Share

Social networking now accounts for 11 percent of all time spent online in the US. Both social networking Artwork: Chip Taylor leader Facebook and "upstart netwo rk" Twitter both posted triple-digit growth.

Facebook surged to the number 1 position among social networks for the first time in May 2009, and continued its strong growth trajectory throughout the year - finishing with 112 million visitors in December 2009, up 105 percent during the year.

Twitter finished the year with nearly 20 million visitors to its website, up from just 2 million visitors from the previous year.

According to comScore's "The 2009 U.S. Digital Year in Review" report nearly four out of five US Internet users visited a social networking site in December 2009.

Twitter's audience growth occurred during the first few months of 2009 - at one point jumping from 4 million visitors to 17 million visitors between February and April.

Former social leader MySpace lost ground to Facebook. comScore report that its new strategic focus on entertainment content is working with MySpace Music growing 92 percent in the past year.

MySpace saw its user composition shift toward younger audience segments in 2009, with people age 24 and younger now comprising 44.4 percent of the site's audience, up more than 7 percentage points from the previous year.

Facebook grew substantially across nearly every performance metric in 2009. Unique visitors, pageviews, and total time spent all increased by a factor of two or more.

Hulu Could Still Launch On The iPad

When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad last month, one notable potential partner absent from the stage was Hulu, now the second-largest video site on the Web. The launch event focussed more on the iPad as an eBook reader to rival the Kindle, but watching videos on it will be just as important. The TV shows on Hulu would be perfect on the iPad. There is just one hitch: the iPad doesn’t support Flash, and all of Hulu’s videos currently run inside a Flash player.

But that could change by the time the iPad launches in March. One rumor I’ve heard from an industry insider is that Hulu is working on an iPad-friendly version of its site that should be ready by the time the iPad hits the market. Hulu itself is still vague about its plans. When asked directly by Om Malik whether Hulu has any plans for the iPad, CEO Jason Kilar recently hemmed and hawed about how he is a big believer in mobile, but wouldn’t confirm or deny anything.

Putting Hulu on the iPad boils down to a business decision, not a technical one. Getting Hulu to work on the iPad would not take as much work as some might expect. The biggest challenge to getting a large video library to play on the iPad (or iPhone) is to convert the underlying video files to the H.264 standard. Fortunately for Hulu, its videos are already encoded in H.264 and have been since the summer of 2008. So it doesn’t have to go back and re-encode all of its videos. But on the front-end, it would have to create a non-Flash player (Flash plays videos encoded in H.264 as does the Quicktime player on the iPad and iPhone).

Kim Bum has… silver hair?!

As many k-drama fans may know, actor Kim Bum is currently starring in MBC’s The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry, playing the role of the brilliant musician Ha Min Jae.

In an episode set to air on February 11, Min Jae finds a gray hair on Lee Shin Young (Park Jin Hee). Min Jae starts teasing her, but it turns out that Shin Young is very unhappy about her new ‘do. So Min Jae thinks of a way to brighten her up and… he dyes his hair grayish silver!

The staffs complimented Kim Bum, saying, “He looks like one of those characters from a cartoon.”

I Don't Want to Be a Prince Anymore Wu Chun

Before the interview heard the night before Wu Chun returned from the mainland, this month he only has 5 days to stop in Taiwan, the rest of the time will be in the mainland flying around, I would think he’s seen a lot of different sceneries, but he said he’s mainly spent most of the time practicing at the set, after the performance he has to leave immediately to other cities. Today its also an early interview job, worried that his body will not able to digest, but he said because he over worked earlier, he slept deeply the night before once he returned home, now his energy is looking pretty good, but in his speech you can hear some tiredness. It’s been 5 years since he’s entered the industry, even though he misses home he is now used to the busyness from one place to another, then to awake in an unfamiliar city, though he does not get bed sick of his own bed, he does sleep more in peace in his own home. But any corner with a Chinese world, there still too many fans waiting for him to appear, not able to stay in each area too long, flying closely with the itinerary, his distressed fans are starting to call him “Super Man”.

Hearing of this, Wu Chun exposed a smile; he excitedly said since young he has always loved heroes and super man, likes to help others, the feeling of making others happy. Just like in the movies like superman, his appearance has also included screams, but he doesn’t have to wear the little red pants to hold up the fallen buildings or to catch a falling woman, he only needs to smile, then he’ll save all those that have waiting. But to be “Super Man” it’s not easy; any time any where there could be emergencies, this title is more like expectations, not only to satisfy the waiting fans, he also has many things he wants to do, perform in movies and idol dramas, produce albums as well in the future to get into publication, with his highly balanced flight to fulfill the job, and in such a state of tension, he actually said he’s satisfied.

Warner Music Doesn't Much Care For This "Free Internet Music"

Warner Music, one of the four largest record labels, is upset with just how free their music is online, and they're not talking about piracy: They're worried about legit, ad-supported services like Last.fm, Spotify and Pandora. Uh oh.

Warner execs, who were just yesterday lamenting the (shocking!) correlation between raised iTunes prices and decrease sales, are just as uncomfortable with above-ground free services. Says Warner's Edgar Bronfman Jr, via the BBC:

Free streaming services are clearly not net positive for the industry and as far as Warner Music is concerned will not be licensed.

"The 'get all your music you want for free, and then maybe with a few bells and whistles we can move you to a premium price' strategy is not the kind of approach to business that we will be supporting in the future.

Steam gamers: Windows XP, Nvidia, Intel rule

Microsoft's Windows XP, Nvidia's video cards, and Intel's processors are what computer gamers use most, if the January hardware survey of Steam, an online service of developer Valve that delivers video games straight to a user's desktop, is any indication.

Windows XP, running 42.15 percent of Steam users' PCs, remained the most popular operating system, ahead of Microsoft successors Windows Vista and the current Windows 7. January marked the first month, however, that the Windows 7 64-bit edition has surpassed Windows Vista in gamer popularity, accounting for 19.5 percent of Steam use, compared to Vista's 19.09 percent.

The Windows 7 32-bit edition was used by 9.03 percent of Steam users, giving Windows 7 a grand total of 28.53 percent usage. It was the only operating system that saw adoption growth among Steam gamers in January, according to the company's findings.

Since hardware components are just as important to a PC gamer as the software, Steam has also broken out individual component usage. And although Advanced Micro Devices won't like to see it, the company is lagging behind in both CPUs (central processing units) and video cards.

Motorola has an oopsie, Android 2.1 update for the DROID not rolling out this week?

Potentially bad news for DROID owners as word out of Motorola’s support forums suggest that the Motorola DROID will not see the rumored 2.1 update drop this week. According to Matt, forums manager over at Motorola, the information was prematurely released. A little investigating also reveals that the DROID update page on Motorola’s website has been pulled and all links to the update page have been deleted from the forums. Anyone a bit confused and disappointed by this potential delay?

John Mayer Apologizes for Using Racial Slur

After igniting a firestorm over sexual and racial remarks he made in a Playboy interview, John Mayer issued an apology on his Twitter page Wednesday – for some of his comments.

"Re: using the 'N' word in an interview, I am sorry," he Tweeted. "I should have never said the word and I will never say it again."

Mayer used the slur when discussing whether he's accepted by rappers like Jay-Z and Kanye West as one of their own.

"Someone asked me the other day, 'What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?,' " Mayer told Playboy. "If you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n---- pass But I said, 'I can't really have a hood pass. I've never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, 'We’re full.' "

The remark didn't wash with his 3 million Twitter followers, who were unusually silent Wednesday. "They don't make rehab centers for being an a-hole," one wrote.

Kara DioGuardi Discusses Nudity, Ellen and Howard Stern!

KARA DioGuardi says there’s a chance she’ll take all her clothes off during this season of American Idol.

“Um, get naked?” Kara told the March issue of Maxim magazine when asked how she’ll top last season where she stripped down to a skimpy bathing suit on live TV to duet with her TV foe Bikini Girl.

“But that could actually have the opposite effect, so I think I’ll keep my clothes on…. I would say that was definitely the first time… and probably the last.”

When asked if Simon Cowell gets flirty with her on the show, DioGuardio said, “I don’t think I’m his type. Ryan Seacrest flirts with me more than Simon does.”

Kara’s opinion on rumors shock jock Howard Stern is set to replace Cowell on the show? “Right now that’s a rumor, and I don’t really know if I can even speak on it,” she told reporters during a Wednesday conference call.

“[But] I don’t think he has a musical background or any kind of music… anything. I think that Simon — if you’re going to replace Simon — you have to have that background.

Wolfman, Percy Jackson, Valentine’s Day Vie for #1

This week America will be lining up outside of theaters to see 3 films. Releasing in theaters this week is a popular horror figure, a son of a famous Greek god and a romantic comedy that focuses on 10 couples. Will Dear John (last’s week #1 film) and Avatar (#2) hold their respective positions on the Box Office? Or will they get lost in the shuffle? Here’s their competition:

This hype for The Wolfman has been “howling” with positive reviews from early screenings. In the release of the 2010 film Universal and Director Joe Johnson trace back the origins of one of horror’s greatest figures. Rounding out Wolfman is the cast leading man Benicio Del Toro, veteran Anthony Hopkins (Silence Of The Lambs) and beauty Emily Blunt.

Spider-Man to spin movie web in 3D

When the new "Spider-Man" movie lands in theaters in two years, on-screen crooks won't be the only ones getting caught in the comic book crime fighter's web, audiences may just feel the sticky strands, too.

Film studio Columbia Pictures on Wednesday said the new "Spider-Man" film, which will be the fourth in the series and still does not have a title, will be shown in 3D and begin its run in theaters on July 3, 2012.

The "Spider-Man" franchise is among the most lucrative in Hollywood, having sold nearly $2.5 billion worth of tickets worldwide for its three previous movies.

Heavy Rain

An emotionally engaging thrill-ride from start to finish, Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain is a superbly crafted interactive experience, told expertly through its stunning visuals and believable characters.

Fear is an easy -- dare I say cheap -- emotion that many games attempt to elicit from their players, with varying results. The emotion itself is fleeting, and the weight upon the outcome of the overall game is generally naught. Love, on the other hand, is an emotion that most developers stray away from, as the difficulty inherent in evoking such a broad mental state is immense. Heavy Rain seemingly effortlessly calls upon our own ties to that emotion, our strengths and weaknesses connected to it, and asks us how far we would go for someone we love. Tied to love in Heavy Rain is consequence, and the ability for both the in-game characters and the player to live with the outcomes of very difficult choices.

Apple to test $1 TV downloads

A new report Wednesday evening says cheaper iTunes TV show downloads could be in the offing.

Apple will be offering U.S. TV shows for $1 each, according to the Financial Times. The offer will coincide with the release of the iPad--expected sometime in April--and is described by "people familiar with the discussions" as a "test" to see whether cheaper downloads will result in increased sales.

TV episodes are normally $1.99 for standard-definition and $2.99 for high-definition through iTunes. The Financial Times says that "some" television networks acceded to Apple's push for lower-priced episodes, but it's not clear which ones those are, and Apple isn't commenting.

There was talk before the iPad launch that Apple might at last introduce an iTunes TV show subscription service, but the announcement never materialized. That still is on the table, according to the report, but there are no further details about when this could come together.

KDE 4.4 'Caikaku' released, complete with netbook trimmings

KDE might not be on the radar of everyone that jumped into the Linux game with Ubuntu, but that might change a bit with the release of KDE Software Compilation 4.4 (a.k.a "Caikaku"), which looks to add considerably more than some tweaks and a bit of polish. That includes a range of built-in social network features and, perhaps most notably, a Plasma Netbook component that's specifically designed for "ergonomic use on netbooks and smaller notebooks." Otherwise, you can expect to see some improved window management features, a new Desktop Search, and, of course, plenty of other minor improvements and bug fixes (7,293, to be exact). Hit up the link below for the complete overview, and the necessary download links to get started.

Google Buzz Is a Dirty Snitch

When you join Google Buzz, it automatically provides you with followers and followees based on prior communication. These people are then listed on your Google profile, which can be seen by all your friends. So, affair havers: maybe hold off.

A lot of the Giz staff was alarmed by the suggested/automatic follower lists, not because they were automatic, but because it was hard to tell how exactly they were chosen. Obvious additions, like girlfriends or coworkers, seem to make the cut. Other entries were people that were rarely—and sometimes never—emailed from the associated account.

Microsoft employee raves about 'Windows.next' in a blog post, blog post quickly disappears

A conspiracy! Perhaps. Recently a loose-lipped Microsoft employee blogged up on MSDN some scattered thoughts on what he's informally calling Windows.next (as opposed to the Windows 8 us know-nothings might assume it might be dubbed). He called the new version "completly [sic] different from what folks usually expect of Windows," and that it draws on user feedback to create something that will "change the way people think about PCs and the way they use them." In interesting contrast to recent words by Dick Brass, the anonymous blogger seems particularly stoked about Steven Sinofsky, the president of the Windows and Windows Live devisions, and his ability to "actually bring together dozens and dozens of teams across Microsoft to come up with a vision for Windows.next." Meanwhile, John Mangelaars, a regional VP at the company, went on record saying "Windows 8 will be mind-blowing." But while John's comment will live on in public record, the MSDN blogger's post is gone without a trace from Microsoft's site. Of course, it's lived on in Google cache for the rest of the internet to enjoy. We're not unfamiliar to Microsoft beating its own drum, but even if it's completely expected to hear these sort of ravings leak out from the Windows crew, we're still happy to hear it.

Bill Gates on the iPad: "It's a Nice Reader, But..."

Bill Gates doesn't seem very impressed with the iPad. Sure he's throwing out some nice compliments to Apple, remarking about how great the iPhone is, and all that. But beneath all the pleasantries, he's pretty much dismissing the product.

You know, I'm a big believer in touch and digital reading, but I still think that some mixture of voice, the pen and a real keyboard – in other words a netbook – will be the mainstream on that.

Youch. Of course, as AllThingD's John Paczkowski remarks: Bill Gates has made similar remarks in the past. In fact, when the iPod first came out he was noted as saying that "there's nothing that the iPod does that [he would] say, ‘Oh, wow, I don't think we can do that.'" Deja vu. [BNET via All Things D]

Notion Ink Adam fan-renders stoke our interest

When do you know that your product has made it? If it’s when fans begin creating custom 3D renders, unasked, then Notion Ink can sit back and feel a little self-satisfied; the Adam tablet hasn’t done much more than show up at CES 2010 and then pave the way for a very interesting appearance at MWC 2010 next week, but that hasn’t stopped Artur Grzegowski from putting together these impressive mock-ups.

Artur looks to have used a combination of the latest product designs we saw earlier in the week along with Notion Ink’s custom desktop UI “Enigma” which we exclusively showed you renders of last month. Now Enigma isn’t the final form that the Adam interface will take, but it’s an example of the continuous desktop – navigated by tilting and flicking the tablet – that Notion Ink have been experimenting with.

It has been known that she has received the offer to appear as the lead appearance for the Korean version of movie ‘Step Up’. An official said, “Currently we have just relayed the scenario to Sandara Park. We want to cast her for the movie, given her experience in singing, dancing and also acting in both Korea and back in the Philippines.”

Beyoncé the carnival queen dazzles on the streets of Brazil as she shoots new video

The official opening of Rio Carnival may be three days off, but Beyoncé got the party started early as she took to the streets to film a new video clip.

The pop star put on a dazzling display in the Brazilian city as she paraded around in a sparkling two-piece costume and huge headdress.

She was joined by Alicia Keys, who also wore a dramatic feathered helmet with her silver costume.

The pair are currently filming a clip for their duet Put It In A Love Song, which features on Alicia's recently released album, The Element Of Freedom.

Earlier, Beyoncé put her best moves on show as she danced on the stairs of a disused bus in a Carmen Miranda inspired number.

John Mayer: Jessica Simpson Was "Crazy" in Bed

John Mayer is kissing and telling -- again.

UsMagazine has an exclusive peek at Playboy's March issue, where the singer, 32, dishes on everything from his past relationships with Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston to his dream mate.

He dubs 29-year-old Simpson (whom he dated from 2006 to 2007) "a drug."

"And drugs aren't good for you if you do lots of them," he says, adding, "Yeah, that girl is like crack cocaine to me."

"Sexually it was crazy. That's all I'll say," he continues. "It was like napalm, sexual napalm. Did you ever say, 'I want to quit my life and just f*****' snort you? If you charged me $10,000 to f*** you, I would start selling all my s*** just to keep f****** you.'"

He didn't share bedroom details about Aniston, who turns 41 Thursday.

It's back on: Madonna reunites with Jesus Luz over dinner in Brazil

Madonna has reunited with model Jesus Luz.

The singer, who was apparently dumped by the 23-year-old last week, enjoyed a romantic Italian dinner with him in Rio De Janeiro.

The pair are staying together at the luxurious Fasano hotel, situated at the heart of Ipanema Beach, Brazilian media reports.

Madonna, 51, and Jesus left the Botticella restaurant in Largo da Barra at around 11pm local time last night.

Mother-of-four Madonna also took her children along for the trip, where she is enjoying the Rio Carnival.

She triggered screams from waiting fans as she checked into her hotel, where singer Beyoncé is also staying.

Has Apple Become Microsoft?

An editorial in today's Wall Street Journal argues that Apple's love of strategy has overclouded its passion for products. Is Holman Jenkins right that Apple is the new Microsoft, and iTunes is the new Windows?

Obviously, the companies are so inherently different both culturally and strategically that it's easy to dismiss Jenkins' claim out of hand. But there's at least one strong point here: Apple's refusal to incorporate Flash may hamper the iPhone's capabilities, but it forces users to go to iTunes for content they could otherwise get for free on Hulu. As Jenkins says:

Here's the bigger worry. Apple may be succumbing to the seductive temptations of "network effects," in which the all-consuming goal becomes getting its mobile devices into more and more hands simply for the purpose of locking more and more users into iTunes.

But has the focus on getting those mobile devices into more and more hands resulted in lower quality products? That's the real issue, and I think the answer has to be no. Jenkins holds the iPad up as proof of an "increasingly junky" device, but I can't think of anyone who's actually had a hands-on with it who didn't think it had serious potential.

The iPad Costs Apple As Little As $229.35 to Build

The $500 16GB, Wi-Fi only iPad costs Apple less than half that to build, according to a recent component breakdown from iSuppli. And for the 64GB 3G iPad, Apple clears nearly $500 in profit. Here's how it breaks down:

Barbie Hsu rates Nicholas Tse’s kissing a zero

Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu has rated her Hot Summer Days co-star Nicholas Tse’s kissing a big, fat zero.

She didn’t manage to smooch him in the movie, though they played lovers, as Nicholas decided to give intimate scenes a miss, out of respect for his wife Cecilia Cheung.

The film’s promotional event in Shanghai saw 300 couples contesting their kissing skills, and also brought the movie’s ‘missing’ lip locks back into the spotlight.

Nicholas had requested to not kiss his co-star out of respect for his wife, so directors Tony Chan and Wing Shya manipulated camera angles to make the two leads look like they’re kissing.

At the Shanghai event, Nicholas reiterated his stance. “It wasn’t her (Cecilia), but my decision as I respect her.”

"Bodyguards And Assassins" breaks record with 16 HK Film Award Nominations & Complete List

Yesterday "The 29th Hong Kong Film Awards" announced its nomination list. Of the 19 to be presented award categories, 16 of the 19 nominations, two nominations each in 3 of the categories went to "Bodyguards And Assassins". This broke last year's "Red Cliff" 15 nominations record, making it the film with the most nominations of the year. This year "Red Cliff II" won 13 nominations. It looks like Wang Xuequ and Sean Lau will be fighting for the Film King Best Actor award, while Kara Hui and Zhang Jingchu are fiercely battling for Film Queen Best Actress.

As for won 16 of the 19 nominations and 2 nominations in 3 award categories, the producer Peter Chan expressed his happiness and honor.

Kara Hui will be depending on her role in "At the End of Daybreak" for the Film Queen award, even her acting has won approval by the insiders. Earlier she won two awards including the Golden Horse "Best Supporting Actress" and the Film Actress awarded by the Film Critics Society. Looks like her chances are especially high, she expressed that she's happy and frankly said that she really does hope to get it because this is her first time regarded as Queen in 30 years. If she does get it, it will make her year even more perfect. She said: "This is one of my wishes, the value is higher than the award. Being part of the finalist is already happy enough because the opportunities of having the status as the female lead is getting less and less." Does she have confidence for the award? She felt that Vicki Zhao from "Mulan" has the greatest chance because Vicki's acting is really good!

Sean Lau and Wang Xuequ are the hottest picks for the Film King award this year. Sean thanked everyone's support and when asked if he had confidence? He expressed: "I hope so because this year's opponents are very strong. I am not nervous because this is not the first time I'm nominated, just feeling normal."

Microsoft MyPhone 2.0 overhaul tipped for Windows Phone 7

We’ve not heard much about Microsoft’s MyPhone cloud backup service since the company confirmed the service details shortly after the Windows Mobile 6.5 launch, but it seems the team responsible are hard at work on v2.0. According to a recently posted job advert, calling for testers in the Windows Mobile software engineering team, Microsoft are elbow-deep in MyPhone 2.0 which will form part of “the next release of Windows Mobile”.

The assumption is that they’re referring to Windows Mobile 7, rather than WinMo 6.5.3 which has been recently revealed on devices like the Sony Ericsson Aspen. The advert falls short of describing any new functionality being tested, however it does describe a greater context which Microsoft expect MyPhone to pave the way for:

Opera Mini for iPhone to be revealed next week, available never

Here's a guaranteed way to drum up support for an upcoming press event: claim the impossible. Opera just announced a press and partner preview of its Opera Mini browser for the iPhone at Mobile World Congress. You read that right -- for the iPhone. Of course, the real intent of this stunt is to draw our incredulous attention to Opera's Mobile and Mini browsers running on platforms where the software is actually released like Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Android. Besides, as good as the Mini browser is, it, like Mobile Safari, doesn't support Flash. And since Apple isn't likely to approve any browser that duplicates functionality it already provides, really, what's the point of all this? A Cydia store release?
