Samsung seems to have taken exception to a little sidenote made by Steve Jobs during his iPhone 4 announcement at WWDC10 this Monday. While waxing poetic on the virtues of IPS, Jobs let us know that he considers it an entirely superior display technology to OLED, and now the world's biggest display maker has a few words to say about it. According to a Samsung spokesperson, the high-res retina display on the iPhone 4 offers only a 3 to 5 percent advantage in sharpness over its own Galaxy S Super AMOLED screen, but sucks down a wasteful 30 percent more power. Moreover, Samsung believes its screens offer better viewing angles and contrast, and concludes by saying that "structurally, IPS LCD technology cannot catch up with AM-OLED display technology." And here we thought Samsung and Apple were getting along so well.

Notion Ink Adam

So the reports of the Adam being delayed until November were… partially mistaken. Notion Ink has updated their blog with more particular (and more optimistic) info, though they stop short of providing an actual launch date. “We are on track” is the extent of their hinting, and that’s good to hear (on track implies July or August availability), but there’s more to their post than that.
For one thing, and perhaps it is only I who did not know this, but they are looking at two hardware variants for the Adam in addition to the one we’ve seen. First, a normal LCD screen (as opposed to the Pixel Qi one), and a second, which they say is “extremely efficient on battery and much cheaper as well.” E-ink, perhaps? But with Android? We saw that before and it didn’t impress.

Still scratching your head trying to figure out what T-Mobile has cooking for June 19th? Well scratch no more. TmoNews is reporting that on that day, every single phone T-Mobile has in its line-up will be available for free. Their proof? A two page script for a TV commercial that is expected to be on heavy rotation over the next week and a bit. As with any offer this tantalizing there is a catch, but in this case it’s not all that bad. All you need to do get some free phones is sign up for a family plan. Anyone planning on treating their Pa (and yourself, naturally) to a new phone the day before Father’s Day?

In her new single "Can't Be Tamed," Miley Cyrus flaunts her defiant side. The 17-year-old superstar sings that she "can't be tamed" or "can't be changed" and neither, it seems, can some of her opinions. In recent weeks, the singer has been vocal about her pop culture dislikes – many of which may be surprising.
Here are the five things that Cyrus is just not that into:

Just more evidence that rooting is the only true path of the geek. The indefatigable coders over at xda-developers have just pushed out a download that allows the Nexus One to start shooting video at 720p resolution. You'll need to have at least CyanogenMod version 5.0.8test3, but once you get your house in order, you'll be enjoying one of the big touted features of the latest handsets on your five-month old Googlephone. Pretty neat, and what's even better is that work is already underway to improve audio and the fps rate, as well as making the code compatible with Android Froyo, it all just requires a bit more tinkering. So, hit the source link to get the download or join us after the break for a quick sample video.

As phone accessories go, protruding lens attachments are rarely top of our wishlist, but this one here might just alter our perspective a little bit. Good and EVO have gone to the trouble of obtaining a magnetically mountable macro lens to test out how well the EVO 4G's camera performs with a little more optical prowess. The answer is that in spite of the inevitably goofy appearance, the jumbo Android handset delivered some highly impressive imagery, getting really up close and personal with its subjects and picking out exquisitely tiny details. The results are certainly of a caliber unobtainable with the default optics and well worth checking out -- the source link is where that party's at.

Patience has had to be your foremost virtue if you were eager to use Google Maps Navigation outside the US or UK, but you might be in luck today as a sizable new batch of countries is getting the free turn-by-turn nav service activated. Googleites in Canada and most of mainland Europe will now be able to hear their Android (version 1.6 and above) giving them voice directions, and as an extra bonus, some nations are also seeing voice search activated, with Canada and German-speaking countries among them. Google's clearly not sitting on its laurels here, so why not power up your phone and let us know how well it finds its way around De Wallen?
