'Inception' looks dreamy; 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' not so much

This weekend is all about mind games. Chistopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) is playing a big one on audiences with Inception while Nicolas Cage is seeing if he can educate his student Jay Baruchel in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The results are likely to be markedly different. Inception is set to score big, though the long run time and narrow swath of the movie-going public that’s itching to take the trip are going against the challenging film. Apprentice, despite audience enjoyment, is suffering from a muddled marketing campaign and an unmotivated audience. The film opened to a weak $3.9 million on Wednesday, a number that will likely not help build the word-of-mouth that Disney was counting on. Read on for the numbers.

Lindsay Lohan Wants To Open Branch Of Rehab Centers

In a move that sounds about as sensible as Victoria Beckham opening a pizza store or Kirstie Alley opening a gym, alcoholic Lindsay Lohan is planning to open her own branch of rehab centers.

As soon as she gets out of jail, that is.

Lindsay’s enabler mom Dina Lohan says her daughter is well aware of how important rehab has been in her own life, and as she’s checked in to a sober living house ahead of her 90-day jail sentence, the starlet is looking ahead to a time when she can help others battling similar demons.

At the tender age of 24, Lohan has been arrested multiple times, made even more trips to rehab, made billions of tabloid headlines and used up billions of litres of fake tan. Oh, and she’s an actress as well.

Dina insists her daughter has learned from her past mistakes and is now 100 percent sober.

White iPhone 4 spotted at London Apple Store?

Most people are expecting Apple to take on the iPhone 4 reception issues at their press conference later today, but there are signs that the company may be announcing white iPhone 4 availability too. Tech writer Julian Prokaza spotted significant deliveries taking place at Apple’s flagship Regent Street store in London last night, complete with “lots of white iPhone boxes in crates”.

Since the iPhone 3GS is seemingly no longer available in white, with only the black 8GB version listed on Apple’s site, that suggests the deliveries are the white iPhone 4 that has been delayed since the black fourth-gen model’s release. Apple blamed “unforeseen manufacturing difficulties” on the delay, and said the white handset wouldn’t be available until late July 2010.

Xbox 360 sales increase 88 percent in June, give it US console crown for the month

U.S. sales of video games fell 6 percent in June to $1.1 billion after the strong appeal of Nintendo Co., Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. consoles failed to offset weak game purchases.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sales gained 88 percent to 451,700 units after it introduced a slimmer version of its console with a larger hard drive. It was the second-largest non-holiday month of sales for the Redmond, Washington-based company’s Xbox 360, behind the September 2007 release of the game Halo 3, research firm NPD Group said today in a statement.

Nintendo sold 422,500 Wii consoles in the U.S. in June, a 16 percent increase from a year earlier, NPD said. Sales of Tokyo-based Sony’s PlayStation 3 jumped 85 percent to 304,800 units in June.

But before she leaves, she suddenly felt uncomfortable; felt dizzy and wanted to throw up. At the end, she even fainted on the floor. Ah Sa was sent to the hospital and she felt better after being treated. She returned home to rest after getting an intravenous injection.

Yesterday afternoon, Ah Sa wrote on Weibo: "Lately I've been sick and have been taking medicines. Took too many medicines, my stomach couldn't handle it. Resist "frying" past love, Zaizai not going to "Kang Xi Lai Le" to promote film

Zaizai’s new film “Love you ten thousand years” will be released in early August, and it is reported/ rumoured that ZZ has declined going to "Kang Xi Lai Le"* which always uses Zaizai and his previous relationship with DaS to create topic, and will also not be appearing in the Saturday entertainment program called "Big Variety Show". Zaizai's manager Zhi Xiang Li said "Variety shows will not really allow us to talk about the movie."

After the he lost the best actor award in Golden Bell, ZZ has been very low-profile. In Ruffian Hero (Black & White), Zaizai’s acting has given audience a fresh impression, and this time in "Love you ten thousand years", he challenges the powerful/ forceful role of a rock band member, hoping once again to score a deep impression in the eyes of audience. This week the film started its publicity, but besides appearing in the shows of same-company colleagues Patty Hou's "Entertainment @ Asia" and the Tao Jingying’s “A college student or not," Zai Zai turned down almost all other program invitations.

Zai Zai will be going to mainland China next week to start shooting the cross-strait new drama "Home", and will rush back on the eve of the film’s release to attend the premier. There is also a possibility that the press conference may be canceled. The film company said that they understand Zai Zai’s tight schedule, and under these circumstances have arranged for him to appear in two TV programs for publicity.

A user with the handle evan127 wrote Thursday, "So, this is the seventh time I've tried to restore. I keep getting error 9. I've tried both usb ports and another cable. Now I am trying a new user account. What else can I do?...I get 3/4 of the way through the firmware update and it gives me an error."

Android Market “only” has 70,000 apps, daily Android device activations still at around 160,000

Well, it may appear that AndroLib was way too enthusiastic about estimating the total number of apps in the Android Market. They expected the 100,000 threshold to be crossed this month.

That now seems rather unlikely, in light of information made available by Google during their Q2 earnings conference call.

The Android Market officially has 70,000 apps in it, and while that number will probably grow until the end of July, I can’t see it skyrocketing to 100,000 in such a short period of time.

Still, that’s a lot of apps.

Sure, the iPhone App Store still has a lot more apps in it, but does that really matter?

Can you really browse through even 70,000 apps in… your lifetime? If you could, would you?

Lindsay Lohan's Drama-Free Magazine Cover

Lindsay Lohan appears in a sexy retro bathing suit on the cover of the latest German GQ.

It's just one of the many pics featured in the August issue that were taken on the beaches of Malibu shortly after the embattled actress was fitted for her SCRAM bracelet, (which she conveniently covered up during last month's shoot).

As for the mag's accompanying profile piece, it's in the country's native language, which is just as well. After all, when it comes to scandal-plagued Lindsay, there's already enough to read these days.

So, go ahead and enjoy some more photos after the jump—no translation needed!

iOS 4.0.1 released to fix iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G signal meter

Apple’s promised iOS4 update has been pushed out for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. iOS 4.0.1 apparently “improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display,” after Apple discovered they had been using the wrong calculations. Previewed earlier today in the iOS4.1 developer beta, the update is expected to make the iPhone’s signal meter more accurate, but not address the hardware issue experienced by iPhone 4 owners where holding the smartphone in a certain way can significantly impair antenna performance.

Apple’s solution for that remains to be seen; the company has arranged a press conference tomorrow morning at 10am PT – which we’ll be liveblogging at http://live.slashgear.com/ – to discuss the iPhone 4, but given no hint as to what exactly they’ll be covering. At least two analysts have suggested a hardware fix may be in the works.

Jay Chou expresses interest in hosting his own show

The multi-talented Jay Chou is successful in just about anything he does, but would he make a good talk show host? It's hard to say at this point, but President Chou is apparently interested in expanding his career into hosting.

At the opening a new clothing store, Jay Chou frankly admitted, “What kind of new challenge do (I) want? That would be hosting! Because being a host is the only thing in showbiz that I haven’t tried yet. I think it’d be fun. There's just one idea in mind, which is to support (my) friends as the focus. Like getting a few guys from Nan Quan Mama, let (my) friends try it out, and guest host for 2 to 3 episodes.”

The star was asked if he is serious about becoming a host., to which he responded, “It depends on which network has the courage. Of course I’m willing to (start a show)!” He revealed that he has in fact been in discussions with two networks already, but declined to name them.

Mel Gibson's Ex-Wife Defends Him in Court

Mel Gibson's estranged wife Robyn is finally speaking out and defending him against allegations that he hit former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

"Mel never engaged in any physical abuse of any kind toward me before, during or after our marriage," Robyn Gibson said in a declaration to a Los Angeles judge overseeing the custody battle between Gibson and Grigorieva, TMZ reports. "Mel was a wonderful and loving father."

"Robyn felt she needed to speak out to protect her children and family," a source close to her told PEOPLE. "Robyn's tried to stay out of this, but she wanted to make sure there was no speculation of what happened within her family."

Gibson began dating Grigorieva just a few weeks after his ex-wife of over 30 years filed for divorce.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department is investigating Gibson over an alleged domestic violence incident from earlier this year involving his ex-girlfriend, Grigorieva. According to a news release, police have opened an inquiry into the alleged attack, which is dated Jan. 6, and are "currently gathering information regarding the allegations."

Jennifer Aniston's Dinner Date: Business or Pleasure?

Jennifer Aniston's social life seems pretty busy lately.

Last week, she went to dinner with actor Chris Gartin. And just last night, she hit Soho House with producer Scott Stuber, who she worked with on The Break Up and Love Happens.

Jen arrived with the 40-year-old producer and opted to sit out on the patio. While the two have been friends for a while, an eyewitness had this to say about their dinner...

"She was dressed cute but casual, in a black strappy top, jeans and heels," the source tells E!. "Jen was playing with her hair during dinner and seemed nervous and excited. She was listening intently and put on her glasses at one point."

No iPhone 4 recall, Journal says

As we suspected, there is no recall planned for the iPhone 4.

That's according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday afternoon. Apple is holding a press conference on Friday morning to talk about the iPhone 4. There's been much speculation regarding what Apple has planned, but it's widely believed the company will address the growing outcry over the iPhone 4's reported antenna problems.

The Journal added that detail as an update to its previous story, which said that Apple engineers knew of the potential problems with the design of the iPhone 4. The device's antenna is inserted directly into the metal band running around the exterior of the device.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported earlier Thursday that Apple CEO Steve Jobs was told by a senior engineer of the pitfalls of the iPhone 4's design, but that he was ignored. Carrier partners were also given little time with the latest model iPhone to do proper testing with it, according to Bloomberg's sources.

HTC Desire HD specs surface: 4.3-inch screen, 8-megapixel camera

We didn't have a ton of details on the so-called HTC Ace when it turned up in a leaked roadmap last week, but a fresh set of rumors are now suggesting that the Ace is actually the Desire HD, which will reportedly pack a number of HD-esque upgrades over the standard Desire. That includes a larger 4.3-inch WVGA screen -- no word if it's AMOLED or SLCD -- and an 8-megapixel camera with 720p video recording. Other rumored details include Android 2.2, 4GB of internal storage, the same 1GHz Snapdragon as the current Desire and, perhaps most interestingly, talk of a "unibody aluminum design." Unfortunately, the rumors still don't include any actual images of the device, but there's still plenty of time for those to leak out before the supposed October release.

Back for good, Robbie? Take two as Williams rejoins Take That for £50million album and tour

It's taken more than a little patience from Take That's army of female fans.

But last night, 15 years after he quit the band for solo superstardom, it was confirmed that Robbie Williams has rejoined the group after finally healing the rift with the other members.

The singer left millions of teenage girls in tears by walking out on the chart-topping group at the height of their fame in 1995.

A statement from the band last night said: 'The rumours are true... Take That: the original line-up, have written and recorded a new album for release later this year.'

The record, as yet untitled, will be released in November.

It is then expected Williams will join his bandmates - Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Jason Orange and Mark Owen - for a huge stadium tour next summer.

His return is initially said to be for one year.

Christina Aguilera “You Lost Me” VIDEO Premiere July 20

Hey Xtina Fans, we’re getting our first look at the video promo for “You Lost Me,” the power ballad featured on the pop star’s latest album, Bionic.

Director Anthony Mandler, who wrote the treatment for the vid, explained the concept in a chat with PopEater this week: “From the first keys of the opening of the track, we know that we are about to watch something that is going to move and transform us. In the end, we’ve traveled through Christina’s world. One that is physical, mental and spiritually charged. Nothing is what it seems. Everything is fractured and evolving, falling away … fragile…”

'X-Men: First Class': Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence join the cast

Yes, it’s true. Sources confirm that Kevin Bacon has joined Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class cast. Details of his role are being kept under wraps, but sources tell us he will play a villain, sparring against protagonists Charles Xavier, played by James McAvoy, and Magneto, Michael Fassbender’s role. It’s not clear who Bacon’s character is specifically, or how he’ll figure into the X-Men universe, but it will be fun to watch. Deadline Hollywood first reported this last week.

Also joining the team is up-and-comer Jennifer Lawrence who received raves earlier this year for her leading role in the Sundance smash Winter’s Bone. The 19-year old actress will play Mystique, the role originated by Rebecca Romijn in the X-Men trilogy. The Hollywood Reporter first reported this news today.

Twentieth Century Fox declined to comment on either casting addition. Filming is set to begin this summer in London.

Facebook Preparing To Announce 500 Million Users

Facebook is about to announce that they’ve hit 500 million users — a milestone that cements (as if it hadn’t already) the site’s status as one of the web’s biggest successes ever. Of course, at Facebook’s growth trajectory it hasn’t been a matter of if the social network would be hitting 500 million, but when it would (in fact, the movie poster for the upcoming movie The Social Network uses the 500 million stat in its tagline). Still, it’s finally about to become official. So how do we know?

As part of its celebration, Facebook is apparently asking many of its employees to upload photos of themselves celebrating and giving thanks to users. And all of those photos are being hosted on one Drop.io account. In the interest of not totally raining on their parade I’ll hold off on sharing all the photos (Facebook will undoubtedly make the Drop.io folder private anyway), but we’ve included a couple of them.

Google tops revenue, misses earnings expectations in Q2

Google grew its revenue and profits in the second quarter, but while revenue topped Wall Street's expectations, profits fell short.

Google generated revenue of US$6.82 billion in the quarter, ended June 30, up 24 percent year on year, the company said Thursday.

Subtracting the commissions and other fees Google pays advertising and other partners, revenue was $5.09 billion, exceeding a consensus estimate of $4.99 billion from analysts polled by Thomson Financial.

Net income came in at $1.84 billion, or $5.71 per share, compared to $1.48 billion, or $4.66 per share, in the second quarter of 2009.

On a pro forma basis, which excludes certain one-time items, net income was $2.08 billion, or $6.45 per share, short of the $6.52-per-share consensus expectation from financial analysts.

Apple, RIM, Google all bid on Palm?

We're having a hell of a time believing this, but BusinessInsider's Dan Frommer is citing "a source familiar with the negotiations" as saying that RIM, Google, and Apple -- yes, Apple -- were all in the mix for Palm at one point or another as the bidding war went on earlier this year. We all know how that story ended up playing out, but prior to HP's winning bid, RIM allegedly made a generous offer and could've ultimately come away with the prize had it not failed to re-up the bid (and may have even reduced it, looking at Palm's SEC filings) after HP made its move. For its part, Google apparently made some not-too-serious moves, primarily in a perceived head game with Apple.

Speaking of Apple, the company was said to be in it primarily for Palm's sizable patent portfolio -- but is claimed to have also been interested in keeping the platform alive, possibly in an effort to compete in the physical QWERTY market where the iPhone has not. Of course, if you look way back, it's important to remember that Mac OS X itself is based on outside work (if you consider NeXT "outside"), so we guess that keeping webOS alive in some capacity after an Apple acquisition wouldn't be totally unprecedented -- but it'd still be really, really weird at best.

Mel Gibson Allegedly Slams Oksana as a 'Gold Digger' in Tape No. 5

Her selfishness and her career came before their relationship, Mel Gibson allegedly tells Oksana Grigorieva, in the latest in a series of recorded rants between the Oscar winner and his former girlfriend – and released Thursday by RadarOnline.

Apparently referring to a money squeeze, the actor-filmmaker, 54, allegedly shouts, "I have to sell paintings." (Some have estimated that Gibson's divorce from his wife of nearly 30 years, Robyn, could cost him as much as $500 million.)

He also mentions the sale of his Los Angeles Lakers box seats, putting a grand total on his relationship with the 40-year-old Russian musician, with whom he has an 9-month-old child, at $5 million.

Lindsay Lohan Enters Rehab

Lindsay Lohan has entered rehab for the fourth time, We has confirmed.

The actress, 24, checked into lawyer Robert Shapiro's sober living home, Pickford Lofts, Wednesday morning. Shapiro -- a member of O.J.'s Simpson's defense team -- started the facility after his son, Brent, died of a drug overdose in 2005.

Lohan also reportedly hired Shapiro to help her fight her 90-day jail sentence after Shawn Chapman Holley quit.

Mom Dina Lohan and ex Samantha Ronson were photographed visiting Lindsay at the luxe West Hollywood facility, in which residents live in lofts with designer kitchens, Internet access and flat-screen TVs.

TMZ.com says that Shapiro will try to convince Judge Marsha Revel to reduce or eliminate Lohan's jail sentence. The Mean Girls star was also sentenced to 90 days in rehab after leaving jail.

But Deputy District Attorney Danette Meyers tells RadarOnline that won't work: "It's a really a moot point to ask Judge Revel to send Ms. Lohan to rehab only as Judge Revel has already sentenced her."

Motorola Is Willing To Break the Phone They Just Sold You

We don't really like the Droid X as a phone, but that part barely matters now. You probably shouldn't buy the phone because doing so supports something very wrong—something anti-customer and anti-innovation—that Motorola is doing.

According to a forum of Android modders, as pointed out by MobileCrunch, the Droid X is locked down with an authentication chip called an eFuse. Even if you aren't a hardcore techie, you can grasp what it does.

The eFuse is there to verify what's called a bootloader—the very first process to load filled with important stuff encompassing the core software of the phone, like firmware. And if the eFuse doesn't see specific, pre-programmed code within Motorola's guidelines, it will essentially short out and the Droid X will cease to function at all. (To resuscitate the phone, you'd need specialized hardware only found at Motorola.)

The Woz Experienced Reception Woes With His iPhone 4, Too

Apple’s executive team will no doubt be fuming this morning, as Bloomberg reported that a senior Apple engineer and antenna expert voiced concerns about potential reception issues with the iPhone 4 due to its antenna design in the early phases of the hardware design process, citing a source familiar to the matter.

Adding fuel to the fire is Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak (aka The Woz), in an interesting interview with Dutch journalist Henk Van Ess.

“It’s like the AT&T dead zone has been extended with this new phone,” the man says.

Here’s the relevant bit from the interview:

Ayumi Hamasaki 3-D concert movie opens next month

Fans of pop star Ayumi Hamasaki (31) will be able to see her in 3-D in movie theaters starting next month. A total of 22 state-of-the-art 3-D cameras were used to film her nationwide tour last year, and the footage has been edited (with some use of CG) to create a new kind of concert experience.

Last year, Hamasaki performed her biggest tour ever, consisting of 35 shows in 12 cities for a total audience of roughly 300,000 fans. Six of the shows, held at three different venues including the Yoyogi National Gymnasium, were filmed for this project. Filming started in July 2009, which actually makes it the first 3-D recording of a Japanese music artist. It is said that there were only eight 3-D cameras in all of Japan at that time, but her staff spent 200 million yen on five new cameras for the project. Over the six concerts, a total of 22 cameras were used.

The idea was likely inspired by the band U2, which created its own 3-D concert movie two years ago. Although Hamasaki was apparently the first Japanese artist to record a concert in 3-D, others such as Shonannokaze, Ikimono Gakari, and Kumi Koda have already worked with 3-D since then.

Fashionista Barbie Hsu Allows Channel Counterfeit on Her Body

Channel is the favorite of all ladies and also the counterfeit market. Although they don't buy fake Chanel, but in many office ladies' closet there are still Channel-styled jacket. In Episode 6 of idol drama "Summer's Desire," Huang Xiao Ming (plays Luo Xi) carefully put a blanket on Barbie Hsu (plays Xiao Mo). Lately some viewers contacted GTV, expressing they couldn't find this Channel logo blanket in the counter; they wonder where they can buy it? After investigation, it's confirmed the crew bought it from night market and it's a counterfeit.

"Summer's Desire" features showbiz as its story background. Huang Xiao Ming and Barbie are big stars and their accessories and outfits are real designer brands. In real life, Barbie is also a fashionista. Would she feel embarrassed of putting on a fake Channel product? Yesterday her manager expressed, during filming she couldn't possibly pay attention to the blanket. Artiste's responsibility is to focus in their performances. If the blanket is fake, should ask the crew for more details.

Xbox 360 Dashboard Redesign Coming in November?

The Xbox 360 dashboard, the user interface for Microsoft's gaming console, looks like it may be getting a slight polish in November when the company launches their Xbox Live Gold Family plan.

The Family plan includes four one-year Xbox Live gold memberships for $100, as well as a new Family Center on the dashboard and the addition of more parental controls for the console.

A set of images that hit the Internet last night showing off a slightly reworked dashboard for the Xbox 360 seems to show the same changes seen in images Kotaku posted of the Family Center, due out in November. Those images, found here and here, were provided to Kotaku by Microsoft.

Taylor Lautner: Should He Play Teen Wolverine in X-Men Movie?

If Taylor Lautner was actually going to be in the upcoming X-Men: First Class, would teen wolf Wolverine be the right role for him?

Wolverine star Hugh Jackman thinks so, but…

"My only question is," Jackman told me the other day while promoting his charitybuzz auction to work out with him to benefit New York's Summit School, "can he grow mutton chops?"

Probably not, but we already know the Twilight star has the muscles for the part.

"Actually, I think people would probably prefer him as a hairless Wolverine than a rather hairy-chested version," Jackman added with a laugh. "Certainly about a billion young girls would."

Now let's get back to Jackman's Wolverine. Any chance we'll see him pop up in The Avengers movie? The hirsute mutant did join the comic book band of crimefighters back in 2005.

"I haven't gotten any phone calls yet," the Aussie actor said. "But you never know. He could but you never know if someone else could have been called to play Wolverine."

US senator demands Apple “public commitment” to fixing iPhone 4

New York Senator Charles Schumer (D) has written an open letter to Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs asking for a quick and transparent fix for the iPhone 4’s antenna woes. Citing the Consumer Reports report from several days ago, Schumer’s letter also asks for “a written explanation of the formula it uses to calculate bar strength.” We’ve got the full letter for your scrutiny after the bounce.

Apple senior antenna engineer warned company about potential issues

Is it Friday yet? Bloomberg is reporting that: “Apple Inc.’s senior antenna expert voiced concern to Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs in the early design phase of the iPhone 4 that the antenna design could lead to dropped calls.” The article cites an anonymous source, “familiar with the matter,” who went on to say:

Last year, Ruben Caballero, a senior engineer and antenna expert, informed Apple’s management the device’s design may cause reception problems. [...] A carrier partner also raised concerns about the antenna before the device’s June 24 release.

Apple declined Bloomberg’s request to comment on the report. One of our AT&T sources has told us that while the iPhone 4 antenna issue is well known — and well covered — AT&T stores aren’t seeing iPhone 4 returns (like at all). Hopefully, we’ll have some concrete answers to all these antenna questions on Friday at around 1:00 PM EDT.

After all, there are no phone numbers to call on an iPod touch or iPad. Here is how we have been told FaceTime will work on non-iPhone devices:
