No Contest: Rihanna Downs Chris Brown

Just think how many fewer albums Chris Brown would have sold had Walmart actually not (like the MechanicalDummy himself erroneously believed) stocked his album.

And just think how many more albums Chris Brown would have sold had he not beaten up his girlfriend earlier this year.

The R&B star's latest release, Graffiti, debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard charts this week, selling just 102,000 copies (by comparison, the week's No. 1, Susan Boyle's unstoppable I Dreamed a Dream, sold nearly six times as much: 582,000).

Team Rihanna will be pleased to know that her release last month, Rated R, easily bested her ex's. That album came into the charts at No. 3 with sales of 181,000 in its first week out.

Still, while Brown's debut may look paltry in comparison to other artists', as far as Brown debuts go, it wasn't all that bad.

Graffiti was Brown's second-biggest debut, beaten only by his 2007 album, Exclusive, which debuted at No. 4 with 294,000 copies.

But though Brown's year started off very, very, very badly, it's ending only marginally better, PR-wise.

On Monday, the singer peaced out of Twitter after throwing a hissy fit over his perceived slight by Walmart. After visiting a Connecticut outlet that didn't have his album in stock (but did have the latest from 12-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys!) he fell under the meltdown-inducing misapprehension that the retail giant was not on Team Chris.

"I'm tired of this s--t," he wrote on his now defunct account. "Major stores r blackballing my CD. Not stockin the shelves and lying to costumers."

Aw, Chris, don't drag the wardrobe department into this.

"What the f--k do I gotta do?" he went on. "The industry can kiss my ass."

Just as long as he's aware the customers aren't going to.

Meanwhile, SuBo continued her domination on the charts, putting her 2009 total at 1.8 million and counting. Should her sales continue apace, she has a good chance of upsetting Taylor Swift's Fearless—steadily but slowly adding to its 2.7 million copies—as the year's best-seller.

Also capping off a banner week is Glee. Fresh off the show's Golden Globe nominations, the first soundtrack volume from the show shot up to No. 3 on the charts.

Here's this week's top 10:

1. I Dreamed a Dream, Susan Boyle
2. My Christmas, Andrea Bocelli
3. Glee: The Music, Volume 1
4. Fearless, Taylor Swift
5. Play On, Carrie Underwood
6. The Fame, Lady Gaga
7. Graffiti, Chris Brown
8. My World, Justin Bieber
9. Crazy Love, Michael Buble
10. The State vs. Radric Davis, Gucci Mane

Jessica Simpson: I Never Flirted With Tiger Woods!

Jessica Simpson is slamming a new tabloid report linking her with philandering golfer Tiger Woods.

The new issue of Star magazine devotes its cover to a "shocking story" about an encounter between the 33 year-old golfer and Simpson, 29, during a July 2009 golf tournament. Star claims that the pair flirted heavily in the presence of Simpson's then-boyfriend Tony Romo, and that they exchanged text messages days later.

"[I] can't believe that I'm on the cover of star magazine with Tiger Woods, what a JOKE! 'The Shocking Inside Story' is (insert drumroll) A LIE!" the singer Twittered Wednesday.

A Simpson source also says there is no truth to the story.

"No part of this story is true," the source scoffs to Usmagazine.com. The pal explains that Woods and Simpson indeed attended the same AT&T National Pro-Am golf tournament in Bethesda, Md., where they were photographed with Romo.

"They met quickly and took a photo together," the insider says. "She was only there for a few hours to sing the national anthem."

Woods has enough to worry about without being linked to the blond star. Moving crews were spotted outside his family mansion in Windermere, Fla on Tuesday. Seen out and about without her wedding ring, his wife Elin Nordegren, 29, is "making plans to move out and take the kids [Sam, 2, Charlie, 10 months] with her," a source told the New York Post. "She's planning to go somewhere warm and Tiger-free for Christmas."

Google: Actually, We Count Only 16,000 Apps In Android Market

Yesterday, I wrote a post on our sister site MobileCrunch about the estimated amount of applications that were available on Android Market according to AndroLib, which aims to serve as both a comprehensive directory and a search engine for Google’s mobile applications store.

The service’s automated statistics pegged the number of apps available for download at over 20,000, free and paid combined. As we wrote, it was the closest thing to getting a confirmed number straight from the Googleplex.

Lo and behold: Google got in touch with us this morning to let us know that the company, contrary to popular belief, isn’t all that shy about disclosing just how many apps are available through Android Market based on internal metrics.

The actual number, a Google spokeswoman informs us, exceeds just 16,000.

I inquired about current growth numbers (i.e. how many new applications are published in Android market on a monthly basis and if this number is increasing over time) and what the ratio of paid and free apps is. (For your reference, AndroLib estimated that ratio at about 38% versus 62%, respectively.)

Unfortunately, Google responded that it doesn’t publicly disclose the breakdown of paid and free apps, although on the upside they did say they’d be exploring more ways to share information about the growth of Android Market in the near future.

For what it’s worth: we also got in touch with AndroLib to give them a chance to explain the difference in the number of apps in the Android Market they estimated are available for download and the number Google just gave us.

AndroLib says that either Google is only counting the number of apps available to users in the U.S. or is disclosing the number accounted for at the end of November rather than today’s number (doubtful), or they simply didn’t do the best job possible counting the apps by not including the correct number of apps removed from the Android Market after publication, either by Google or by the app developer (a more likely scenario).

We’ll keep it at 16,000 active applications for now.

Apple wins permanent injunction against Psystar

It is the end of the line for Psystar as U.S. District Judge William Alsup has issued a permanent injunction against the Apple clone maker. The injunction prevents Psystar from pursuing its core hardware business by banning the following:

  • Copying, selling, offering to sell, distributing, or creating derivative works of plaintiff’s copyrighted Mac OS X software without authorization from the copyright holder
  • Intentionally inducing, aiding, assisting, abetting, or encouraging any other person or entity to infringe plaintiff’s copyrighted Mac OS X software;
  • Circumventing any technological measure that effectively controls access to plaintiff’s copyrighted Mac OS X software, including, but not limited to, the technological measure used by Apple to prevent unauthorized copying of Mac OS X on non-Apple computers
  • Manufacturing, importing, offering to the public, providing, or otherwise trafficking in any technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof that is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively controls access to plaintiff’s copyrighted Mac OS X software, including, but not limited to, the technological measure used by Apple to prevent unauthorized copying of Mac OS X on non-Apple computer
  • Manufacturing, importing, offering to the public, providing, or otherwise trafficking in any technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof that is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively protects the rights held by plaintiff under the Copyright Act with respect to its copyrighted Mac OS X software.

Psystar has until December 31th, 2009 to fully comply with the ruling and must begin the process immediately using a method that provides the fastest route to compliance. Psystar may have to shutter the hardware portion of its business but the legal status of Psystar’s $50 Rebel EFI software remains unclear. In his ruling, Alsup does not cite the Rebel EFI software specifically, claiming that Psystar failed to disclose exactly what the application did. In case Psystar has high hopes of continuing to sell its Rebel EFI software, Alsup issued a stern warning, ‘What is certain, however, is that until such a motion is brought, Psystar will be selling Rebel EFI at its peril, and risks finding itself in contempt if its new venture falls within the scope of the injunction.” Will this admonishment permanently close the doors on Psystar or will the rebel company stage one last battle?

Rachel McAdams Talks Lindsay Lohan In January Vogue

Rachel McAdams hits theaters alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in Sherlock Holmes Christmas Day — but she’s also hitting newsstands on the January 2010 cover of Vogue Magazine.

During her interview with the American Fashion Bible, the actress vividly recalled working with troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan on the 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls.

“I just remember marveling about how much she knew as an actor, how much she understood. She did very few takes and had this naturalness to her. And beyond that, I was 26 at the time. I’d be asked, ‘Where do you go out?’”

Zune HD Twitter app now live UPDATE: it censors tweets!

It was a slow rollout today, but the promised Zune HD Twitter app is now live in Marketplace. We've been playing with it a little since we got it, and while it's definitely one of the more attractive mobile Twitter clients we've come across, it's also distressingly laggy: it's stalled out several times just scrolling a list of tweets, button presses go ignored, and refreshing data seems to cause all sorts of consternation -- our Zune's dropped its WiFi connection several times now. Not sure what's going on with that, but we've definitely seen some far more polished apps running on the Zune, so we're hoping these glitches get cleaned up soon.

Update: Turns out there's a bigger problem here than just poor performance -- as reader Scott Zero points out, it censors naughty words out of tweets in your timeline. (Seriously -- here's his original tweet that we've highlighted above.) Sure, it's a free app, but this kind of active content censorship just rubs us the wrong way -- even worse than Apple's various Twitter-related App Store shenanigans. Bleh.

Motorola Backflip / Enzo bringing Android contortions to AT&T

Just when we though this decade had run short on phone form factors, Motorola comes along to blow our minds with this new Backflip / Enzo / Motus device. Amazingly, the most interesting part of this device might not even be the reverse hinge design, which flips the keyboard back behind the screen and faces out when not in use, but the fact that there's a clear-as-day AT&T logo on it -- something we'd heard rumored, but dared not believe until we saw it with our own eyes. The rest of the leaked photos go on to corroborate earlier rumors: there's a touchpad on the back of the keyboard to aid in no-look scrolling, it's running Blur on top of Android 1.5 (with a few AT&T apps, Yahoo search and no Gmail), and it runs the same 528MHz processor as the CLIQ. Hard to believe this very same company builds the Droid.

Fourth generation iPhone and iPod touch getting double the memory capacity?

Ever since the iPhone and iPod touch were released, it seems like a trend that its memory capacity doubles every single year: 8GB, 16GB and 32GB for the iPhone and twice that for the iPod touch. Now that Toshiba can pack 64GB of NAND flash memory onto a single chip, it’s easy for us to imagine this technology finding its way into the next generation iPhone and iPod touch. If you’ve been one of those people holding off on buying an iPhone or iPod touch because of your massive iTunes library, your decision might get a little easier this coming summer.

Rainie Yang’s first new “Raining Love” MV off upcoming 2010 album!

After viewers in Taiwan got a glimpse of Taiwanese pop tart Rainie Yang’s new "Raining Love" MV, the full version of it from her upcoming 2010 album is now online for everyone’s viewing pleasure.

The song itself has already been around for quite some time, since it’s also the ending theme for Rainie’s currently-airing idol drama “Hi My Sweetheart”, but with the release of her new MV, viewers can finally witness the corresponding story unfold.

The new MV pretty much matches the sad tone of the song, as Rainie is seen with her character’s on-screen love in mostly various states of seriousness and sadness. To further the effect, the MV’s director gave the MV a hazy, greenish-blue tint to accentuate the song’s mood and match the song’s title.

We also get the chance to see Rainie’s new bohemian-hair look that she was gearing for in her new album, but the MV mostly relegates her hair to her current straight-hair look that she’s been sporting on variety shows for at least a year now.

Rainie’s new MV is appropriate for her album’s debut song, as the song pretty much is a blueprint for filming a sad story. For people who dig these kinds of sad MVs, then Rainie’s new MV is right up your alley.

Lee Minho wants to be in IRIS 2… and a girlfriend?

Kwon Sang Woo isn't the only one who is interested in IRIS Season 2. Recently, Boys Over Flowers star Lee Minho stated that he wanted to participate in IRIS 2 as well. The confession took place during a Q&A session at his fan meeting on December 15th at the Westin Hotel in Taiwan.

Lee Minho stated that he's currently mulling over a couple projects and that he wanted a more mainly-type role, such as that of a character in IRIS. He also stated that he would love to learn as apprentice under Lee Byung Hun, however there's a good chance that Lee Byung Hun won't even be in IRIS 2.

Lee Minho also was asked what his Christmas wish was and he said he wishes for a Girlfriend because he doesn't want to be alone for Christmas. He stated his ideal type of woman is Song Hye Gyo.

Lee Minho said 2009 was the best year of his life, mainly because he became a superstar through Boys Over Flowers. He said 2009 was filled with a lot of good times and that he was very lucky this past year.

Kim Hyun Joong performs Rainism

SS501's Kim Hyun Joong performed Rain / Bi's Rainism for 450 lucky fans at the Fresh DK Party.

At an event held on the 16th for soft drink, Dynamic Kin, Kim Hyun Joong gave his fans an early Christmas present. He said, "I practiced hard on this. I'm going to try my best so I hope you can at least see that." With a wave of his hands and the first thumping beats of Rainism the crowd went nuts. He did a great job despite his modest sell.

Tiger Woods Jessica Simpson Romantically-Linked

Over the past three weeks, once stellar sports star Tiger Woods has been exposed as a serial philanderer — with more than 14 women alleging to have had affairs with the golfer before and during his five year marriage to Swedish model, Elin Nordegren. From cocktail waitresses to adult film stars, it seems no free-spirited woman with a pulse was safe from Tiger’s insatiable sexual appetite.

Now Star Magazine is reporting that there is the name of a very unlikely blonde secretly scrawled on the pages of Tiger’s little Black Book: singer-actress Jessica Simpson.

While the tabloid doesn’t elude to any hanky-panky going down between the pair, snitches say the buxom blonde became very friendly with the very married athlete after the two met during the AT&T National Pro-Am golf tournament in Bethesda, Md last summer — just days before Jessica’s split from NFL star Tony Romo.

Star spies say a smitten Jessica exchanged numbers and e-mail addresses with Tiger when the PGA champ sneakily introduced himself to the beauty during the event.

“Tiger liked what he saw and let her know it,” a source tells Star. “Jessica said that she felt like Tony wasn’t paying attention to her, so she was like, ‘What the heck!’ She decided to have fun with Tiger whether it bothered Tony or not.”

Taylor Swift “Supergirl” Movie Role

Taylor Swift is being courted to soar to new heights in the role of Supergirl! The “Love Story” singer – whose music albums have sold a combined four million copies, making her the best-selling musician of the year in America — is reportedly in chats with Hollywood producers to portrayed the Girl of Steel in a big screen remake of the 1984 box office flop Supergirl.

Supergirl - alias Kara Zor-El – first appeared in comic books in 1959. Helen Slater played the role in the movie — a spin-off of the popular Superman film series, which starred Christopher Reeves.

“Hollywood is short of female heroes and the time is right for a new Supergirl,” an industry tattle whispers. “A number of young stars are being mentioned for the title role in a ‘Supergirl’ movie and possible TV spin-off and Taylor is top of that list. She has all the right elements to be a positive role model to young girls.”

Taylor is no stranger to the big screen; the 20-year-old songbird will make her acting as Samantha Kenny in the film Valentines Day next year.

Lady Gaga “Most Listened To Artist Online”

Lady Gaga is the “most listened to artist on the web,” according to a leading music site Last.fm.

Tracks from the star’s 2008 debut album The Fame were played more than 18.5 million times by the site’s 35 million-strong community. Last.fm the tracks from full-length albums which had been streamed by visitors on the site to come up with their Top 10.

Gaga had her songs played six million times more than her nearest rivals The Killers!

Most Popular Free Mac Downloads of 2009

Nothing beats finding just the right application to fill a common need, fix a problem, or boost your productivity. Give yourself an early present this holiday season with 15 of the most popular Mac downloads of 2009.

Like last year's most popular Mac downloads, this list is based on the popularity of apps we've covered in 2009, regardless of the original release date of the app. Many were brand new this year, while others were solid updates to popular software. If you took a look at yesterday's Most Popular Free Windows Downloads of 2009, a few of the cross-platform favorites may look familiar. (I've rounded up the most popular cross-platform downloads at the bottom of the post.)

Snow Leopard: The Feisty Kitty That Could (and No, It's Not Quite Free, Either)

The release of Snow Leopard was nearly as big a deal for Mac users this year as Windows 7 for Windows folks, and while it was never strictly a download (unless you grabbed it from less reputable means), it's worth highlighting. Over the course of the year, we helped out by prepping your Mac for Snow Leopard, highlighted its biggest improvements, and held your hand while upgrading. If you didn't want to pony up for Apple hardware, we even showed you how to install Snow Leopard on your Hackintosh PC, no hacking required—and luckily for the frugal among us (no, this one's not free, but it was a big deal in the OS X world so we figured we'd include it), the $29 upgrade disc worked whether or not you were upgrading from Leopard.

2009 Was Still a Year of the Jailbreak

The iPhone hardware may be getting better and better, but Apple still hasn't gotten any better at opening up the app store to, oh, competition. As long as that's the case, jailbreaking apps like PwnageTool and QuickPwn will still be extremely popular.

Magnifique Customizes Your OS X Theme

The release of Snow Leopard didn't do all that much to change Leopard's spots, but Magnifique certainly does. This free skinning app is full of user-generated Leopard-customizing goodies. Note: Magnifique does not support Snow Leopard, so you'll want to steer clear of it if you've upgraded. Unfortunately the Magnifique development seems to be at a standstill at the moment.

DoubleTwist May Be the Coolest Universal Media Manager Ever

People fed up with iTunes' restrictive stance on non-Apple devices (see Apple and Palms' dance, for example) were very interested in doubleTwist, a universal media manager that automatically converts files to the appropriate formats and seamlessly syncs them to your PSP, Android device, BlackBerry, and more.

Google Quick Search Like Quicksilver from Google

A lot of people were disappointed to learn about Quicksilver's grim future a while back, but many of you were heartened to learn that Quicksilver's creator had released a similar tool working with Google called Quick Search Box. Then again, it appears Quicksilver's not entirely dead just yet (see below).

Pollux Automatically Cleans and Tags Your iTunes Library

For all the access to track metadata contained in the iTunes store, iTunes is a slouch at cleaning and tagging mislabeled or poorly labeled tunes. Pollux was an absolutely killer iTunes supplement that grabbed song, artist, album, and other metadata names, along with lyrics and album art, quickly and accurately. The problem? Shortly after we highlighted it, Pollux was shut down because the APIs it accessed stopped letting it access them for free. We liked Pollux better, but if you're looking for something similar, check out TuneUp (free and pay versions available).

Picasa for Mac Beta Released, First Look

After years of Windows-only support, Google released the first Mac version of Picasa at the beginning of the year, and it didn't take long before the majority of our Mac readers preferred it to iPhoto. You go, Google.

Quicksilver Releases Update, Improves Performance

Just when we thought Quicksilver was no more, it turns out that several contributors are continuing occasional development over at social coding web site GitHub. Their latest release brought on some solid performance improvements, and it worked well (for us at least) with Snow Leopard.

Glims Turns Safari into a Browser Worth Using

Free Safari plug-in Glims adds a handful of new features to Safari, giving it the kind of features one might expect from a more, ahem, customizable browser—for those of you who still prefer Safari to its more feature-rich counterparts.

Popular Cross-Platform Apps:

Google Chrome—Dev Releases and Beta At Last

Google Chrome is just over a year old, but it's actually much younger for Mac users. We got our first glimpse at Chrome on OS X back in April, and it wasn't until last week that Google released the first beta for Macs. Be sure to check out our power user's guide to Google Chrome if you're just getting started.

Namebench Helps You Find the Fastest DNS Server for Your Computer

Google very recently announced a free DNS service they boasted as fast, but rather than take their word for it, we pointed you toward namebench (and several readers also pointed toward the excellent DNS Name Server Benchmark). It tests various popular DNS servers to find what's really going to be the fastest choice for your system.

Google Earth 5.0 Released, Looks Incredible

We're sort of junkies for maps and 3D, so when Google Earth 5 was released, we were pleased as punch. The update featured historical imagery, ocean maps, and improved world touring capabilities. Maybe we just like saving ourselves some dough in these tough economic times with a little Google Earth sightseeing.

And Then There Was Firefox

The notorious Firefox memory slow-downs may have some of us down on the reliable old 'fox, but that doesn't mean we aren't all still eager to grab the latest and greatest releases and stick with it as our default browser—whether it's the big Firefox 3.5 release or the Firefox 3.6 beta (1, 2, 3, or 4). We're looking forward to more great Firefox'ing in 2010.

Thunderbird 3 Officially Released with New Features, Improved Look

Sure it was two years since Thunderbird's 2.0 release, but at least they didn't disappoint. Thunderbird 3.0 comes with solid new search and filtering tools, better looks, and a great new tabbed interface.

HandBrake Updates to 0.9.4 with Over 1,000 Changes, 64-Bit Support

Free, open-source DVD ripping and encoding tool HandBrake released a pretty saucy update last month with a ton of fixes and improvements. It's no coincidence that it's always been our readers' favorite video encoder, and this year's big-ish (but still not 1.0) update should only help keep it there—even though several users aren't thrilled that the HandBrake devs have dropped AVI/XviD.

EU resolves Microsoft IE antitrust case

Microsoft and the European Commission have settled their differences over the choice of Web browsers in Windows.

European Commissioner for Competition Policy Neelie Kroes on Wednesday formally announced a resolution to the Internet Explorer antitrust case against Microsoft. As part of the settlement, Windows PCs sold in the European Economic Area will now present users with a Choice Screen, allowing them to install alternative browsers beyond Internet Explorer.

The Choice Screen will offer users the ability to install up to 12 of the most widely used Web browsers that run under Windows, including Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome, and Opera. Users can download as many of the browsers as they wish or stick with Internet Explorer. Additionally, computer makers and users in Europe will be able to turn off IE totally and set up other browsers as the default. As part of the settlement, Microsoft is also prohibited from preventing the choice of different browsers through any contractual or technical means.

Microsoft initially proposed stripping a browser out of Windows 7 entirely, a move first reported by CNET. Both competitors and the EU balked at that idea though, instead favoring some sort of ballot screen. Microsoft eventually relented, though the company and its rivals have gone back and forth for a while over the details.

Based on feedback it received, Microsoft modified and improved its design, according to the EC. The screen now appears in a neutral window, rather than an Internet Explorer window, and displays the browsers in a random order. The screen itself looks cleaner and less cluttered to the EC, which it believes will help users better focus on making their browser choice.

Microsoft has promised to make the screen available for five years in the European Economic Area and to offer it for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7, according to Europe's antitrust regulators.

"Millions of European consumers will benefit from this decision by having a free choice about which web browser they use," said Kroes. "Such choice will not only serve to improve people's experience of the internet now but also act as an incentive for web browser companies to innovate and offer people better browsers in the future."

Starting six months from now, Microsoft must report regularly to the Commission on its progress in implementing the new commitments, and the Commission can review the commitments two years from now.

After the EU announced the news, Microsoft issued its own statement on the resolution of the long-running, and expensive, antitrust case.

"We are embarking on a path that will require significant change within Microsoft. Nevertheless, we believe that these are important steps that resolve these competition law concerns," Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said in the statement. "This is an important day and a major step forward, and we look forward to building a new foundation for the future in Europe."

The U.S. Justice Department, which waged its own years-long antitrust battle with Microsoft, applauded the outcome of the EU's case.

"As we understand it, the settlement is based on measures to enhance competition and is designed to preserve industry participants' incentives and ability to compete going forward. A settlement that helps to clarify obligations under European law allows the industry to move forward," Christine Varney, assistant attorney general in the Justice Department's antitrust division, said in a statement.

Bing and Google Both Growing, at Yahoo's Expense

Even with the threat of Microsoft's Bing, Google continues to take a greater share of the search engine market. But Bing is growing, too; it's Yahoo that is losing ground.

According to comScore's November statistics (via eWeek), Google and Bing are essentially having a feeding frenzy on Yahoo's lost market share. Yahoo's share fell by 0.5 percent last month to 17.5 percent. Bing grabbed most of those searches, rising from 9.9 percent in October to 10.3 percent last month.

Google took the rest, bringing its total market share from 65.4 percent to 65.6 percent in November. It is, however, a slower gain than the previous month, when Google gained a half percentage point.

Oddly enough, comScore's numbers show a different trend than those from Hitwise, released a week ago. Hitwise claims that Bing actually lost market share in November, staying well below the double digits at 9.3 percent.

Google and Bing have engaged in a bit of a search arms race lately. Both search engines have integrated Twitter results, with Bing's Twitter search and Google's real time feeds of Tweets. Last week, Google introduced "Google Goggles," which lets Android phone users perform Web searches based on camera photos. Bing has a different kind of visual search that shows results as graphics. Microsoft is also building out its Map features with Bing Maps Beta, and just released an iPhone app akin to Google's Mobile app. I doubt the impact of all these new and experimental features is reflected yet in market share.

Meanwhile, Yahoo is flailing, its market share down 2.9 percent since November 2008. The company lost toolbar deals with Acer and HP, the two biggest computer manufacturers in the world, and simply isn't innovating on search anymore.

All the better for Google and Microsoft, but with Microsoft finalizing a deal to power Yahoo Web searches with Bing, I wonder how long Microsoft can tolerate Google eating up Yahoo's losses.

CNN names Jay Chou as one of Asia’s most influential people

This year, who dominated in Asia? America’s CNN named 25 most influential people, and in Taiwan, only Jay Chou made it onto the list.

CNN indicated in the foreword report that whether it is saving the world or singing to Earth, the 25 people they have chosen represent those with the greatest influence this year in the world’s largest continent – Asia. CNN used ‘entertainer extraordinaire’ to describe Jay Chou, and this year, Jay raked in over NT$500million of revenue, becoming the number one king in Taiwan. But Jay’s ambition does not stop there. Besides his big Chinese action blockbuster ‘The Treasure Hunter’ premiering at the end of the year, he also collaborated with Hollywood A-lists Nicolas Cage & Cameron Diaz in ‘The Green Hornet’. When photos of Jay filming were exposed, it caused a frenzy throughout Asia.

In the China district, Chong Qing City’s strong supporter of anti-corruption & anti-crime secretary Bo Xi Lai made it onto the list and CNN even mentioned that some people predict that he would take over Chinese president Hu Jin Tao’s place. At the military parade on China’s National Day, celebrating it’s 60th anniversary, the soldier wearing pink uniform, a short skirt, and white boots was named by CNN as ‘Pretty In Pink Gunman’. Shanghai’s talk show King Zhou Li Bo was also named as ‘Comedian Of The Year’.

In the Hong Kong district, Andy Lau was the other superstar who made it onto the list. Hong Kong’s Four Seasons Hotel & Michelin 3-Star Restaurant’s director of the dim sum department is also on the list, as he created ‘The Good Luck Dim Sum Shop’ where you can eat Michelin-standard dim sum at less than NT$80, becoming the cheapest Michelin-standard restaurant in the whole world.

3 people in Japan also made it onto the list, including new prime minister Yukio Hatoyama & this year's U.S. baseball "World Series" most valuable player Hideki Matsui. It seems that negative influence is also influence as Noriko Sakai, who was sentenced to prison for drug use is also on the list, and CNN named her ‘fallen angel’.

The other negative influencer is Singapore’s 19-year old student Liu Yi Min, who pirated approximately NT$180,000 off someone else’s credit card.

Peek CEO gets Google Nexus One hands-on; price speculation increases

Bored of the Google Nexus One yet? Details – and hands-on reports – keep filtering through, and while much of it is still speculation we’re gradually building up a picture of what Google may have in mind. Peek’s Amol Sarva is the latest to play with the Android 2.1 smartphone, and while he’s reasonably impressed with the hardware – he describes the Nexus One as “definitely nice” – he still reckons it’s a pretty mainstream iPhone clone.

Meanwhile, elsewhere there’s talk of a January 5th release date and possible sub-$200 or even sub-$100 pricing for the handset. Earlier this week Reuters quoted “a source familiar with the matter” for the early January launch, with the handset tipped to be on sale through the Google website. However we’re more interested in the possible pricing, and whether the search giant will be selling the Nexus One unlocked and contract-free, or subsidizing it.

Tipsters – anonymous and otherwise – are going wild with speculation, with our old friend Charbax saying Google will offer the Nexus One for $199 or $99 with a rebate; however he also claims the device will use 3G for VoIP on either T-Mobile or AT&T, which is at odds with the FCC report that indicated the Nexus One would be T-Mobile 3G compatible only. Over at AndroidAndMe their source is saying $199 too, with a CDMA version waiting in the wings [via Gear Diary].

All well and good, but certainly nothing approaching conclusive. The prospect of a data-only SIM and contract is interesting, with VoIP and Google Voice used for all the talk and SMS functionality users expect, but given the Google Voice app already available in the Android Market, that doesn’t necessarily distinguish the Nexus One from other devices using the platform. As Amol Sarva says, “I’m not sure there’s anything to go gaga over when comparing it to some of the T-Mobile touchscreens out there.”

15% of teens 'sexting' on cells, study says

About 15 percent of American teenagers have received nude or sexually suggestive photos on their cell phones, and that percentage doubles as teens get older, according to a study released Tuesday about the tech-fueled trend called "sexting."

Boys are as likely as girls to send sexts, while teens who pay for their own cell phone bills are more likely to text salacious shots, according to the study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project of Washington.

The study does show the vast majority of teens aren't sexting, with 4 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds admitting to sexting photos or videos of themselves.

But researchers said the study still indicates sexting, which could lead to other problems such as cyber bullying, has become part of the fabric of modern teenage life.

"Kids have experience with it," said Amanda Lenhart, a Pew research specialist. "It's something they have to deal with and talk about in their lives."

And with the widespread use of cell phones, she said, teens' lives are "now transmittable and shareable in ways that weren't possible before."

The Pew report is based on interviews conducted with 800 teenagers and their parents or guardians from June to September.

The study showed 8 percent of 17-year-olds sent sexts and 30 percent received them. Teens who paid for their own phone service and those with unlimited texting plans were more likely to sext.

The study quotes teens brought into focus groups who said they sexted because they were in a romantic relationship, hoped to interest a prospective partner or thought the photos could be used in lieu of having sex.

"I think it was more common in middle school, because kids are afraid to do face-to-face contact sexually," the study quotes one high school girl. "In high school, kids don't need the pictures. They'll just hang out with that person romantically."

A middle school boy said sexting was "no big deal and it doesn't happen very often."

But another high school girl wrote that "most of the girls who have are usually pressured by a guy that they like or want to like them, or their boyfriends."

Earlier this year at a conference in San Francisco, sexual health educators and teen advocates said the cultural fascination with the sexting trend was "overblown."

But Internet safety advocate Parry Aftab believes the Pew numbers are low because those interviewed may not have been as forthcoming with their parents present.

"If this many teens were willing to admit it in front of a parent or guardian, you have to wonder how many teens are really doing it," said Aftab, executive director of the nonprofit WiredSafety.org.

The Pew findings are similar to those of a Dec. 3 Associated Press/MTV poll that said 3 of 10 people ages 14 to 24 have sent or received nude photos on their phones or online, and 50 percent have been the target of digital abuse.

MTV, with partners including WiredSafety and social networks Facebook and MySpace, launched a multiyear campaign called "A Thin Line" to raise awareness about the dangers of sexting and digital abuse. MTV General Manager Stephen Friedman cited one recent case of a 13-year-old Florida girl who sent a nude photo of herself to a boy she liked. Published reports said she was so distraught about the taunting she received after the photo circulated to students at two schools that she hanged herself.

"We want (teens) to think about it before they pass that nude photo around," Friedman said. "Most of these kids in a million years wouldn't want to be inflicting that kind of damage."

10 Points About the Nexus One Google Phone

EWEEK has read some of the 1,400-plus Nexus One reports and cherry picked some points and for you to enjoy and debate here. Will it be sold online, unlocked and subsidized by Google or with a two-year contract from T-Mobile, or both? Is Google risking alienating its current Android partners Motorola, Samsung, Verizon Wireless and Sprint? Questions and theories abound, with few concrete answers.

News Analysis: This Nexus One Google Phone story is getting out of hand. It's reminiscient of satirical movies such as the Scary Movie series, Not Another Teen Movie and others that make fun of sorry slasher and other B-movie fare for teens.

Coverage is getting downright metaphysical. People are writing pieces that underline what is known, what may be known, and what we don't know, scrambling for stakes in the Google News cluster, which Dec. 15 listed a staggering 1,400-plus pieces on the latest Android smartphone.

This Nexus One device has been given to Google employees to test before an alleged January release. The HTC-made device has no physical keyboard, is super fast, powered by Android 2.1, which is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. There are proximity and ambient light sensors, and accelerometer: magnetic compass: Wi-fi radio and a noise cancellation chipset.

There is text to speech flavor, dual microphones, and the device runs on GSM, which makes it a candidate for T-Mobile and AT&T's networks in the U.S., and plenty of vendors overseas. The Federal Communications Commission has blessed it and Google has registered Nexus One as a trademark Dec. 10, according to Engadget.

The device will be unlocked, but supposedly supported by T-Mobile, and possibly sold by Google itself online and possibly through Best Buy. Barring subsidies from either T-Mobile or Google, the smartphone could cost $500, pricing it out of range of all but the geekiest of geeks and Google fans.

What do the media and blogosphere have to say about all of this? You just read some of it above. Google is mum beyond a blog post acknowledging that a new device exists and has been given to Google employees to test. EWEEK has read many of the reports and cherry picked some points and rumors for you to enjoy here.

1. Nexus One Named For Blade Runner Robots

Daring Fireball noted the name Nexus One appears to be a nod to the line of replicant cyborgs from late sci-fi author Philip K. Dicks "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep," upon which the 1982 film Blade Runner was based. The New York Times went deeper, speaking to Dick's daughter, who claimed Google did not consult her family about using the Nexus One name. I smell a handsome payout in the Dick family's future. One other note: Things didn't turn out so well for the replicants. Superstitious, anyone?

2. Google Already Sells Phones

Technically, this is true. CNET is correct in pointing out that Android developers have been able to buy unlocked versions of the G1 and the T-Mobile MyTouch3G for $399. EWEEK covered this a year ago here.

3. The Nexus One is Just Another Android Phone

Slate.com's Farhad Manjoo noted: "For the Google Phone to be truly stellar, Google would have to imbue it with exclusive features—violating the core Google principle of platform independence. I just don't see that happening; it's not in the company's DNA to make software that works on one device alone." So every phone will be a Google Phone. That may be the single best argument against a Google Phone boasting exclusivity.

4. Unlocked, or Locked With T-Mobile?

Indeed, while the blogosphere was in a tizzy over an unlocked GSM device in the Nexus One, Reuters claims T-Mobile will subsidize the phone cost provided customers agree to a two-year contract. Alternatively, we suppose, one could buy it from Google for $500 or whatever the at-cost production value is. Pick your poison. Pay upfront for no lock-in, or pick T-Mobile, which is starving for more customers. Such is the state of the wireless business in the U.S.

5. Android for All

Then you have Android and Me, which reports that the Nexus One will be an affordable $199, subsidized by Google. What's the catch? The smartphone will require a Google account, so Google will be basically buying new mobile users. Google officials have made a big deal about mobile searches increasing 30 percent in recent quarters. Imagine what a Google phone would do for that number.

6. Nexus One For Consumers? You Must Be Crazy

Industry analyst Jack Gold has a markedly different theory: "Despite the widespread conjecture of the past few days, it is highly unlikely that this phone will ever be offered to the general consumer, let alone sold by Google directly to end users." Gold sees the Nexus One as a test bed for several thousand Google workers and developers. "Testing is the path that Google has chosen for this device, and not the path of competing with its customers." The company wouldn't alienate Motorola, Samsung and the carriers.

7. Then Again

With Apple's iPhone dominating the smartphone space, Google may believe that it must roll out and subsidize the Nexus One -- a drastic, bold move by any measure -- to gain serious headway in the mobile market. It's not so much about the devices as it is about the mobile searches and the ads Google wants to show along with THEM. Sure, Google serves ads on Google searches executed through the iPhone now, but who is to say Apple won't shut Google out for a better deal with Bing?

8. So What?

The Wall Street Journal doesn't believe Google needs its own special phone to succeed in mobile, noting (paywall): "Mobile apps are taking the place of Web sites. While there clearly will be a place for search in helping people find apps, Web-surfing behavior will change on mobile. But Google became the dominant player in Web search without designing computers. It is unclear why it needs to sell mobile phones to dominate mobile search." One can't help but think Google and its supporters might argue the alternative

9. Meet The New SAAS -- Smartphones as A Service

More broadly, Google wants to uproot the current wireless phone market. Google wants to flip the mobile carrier and distribution market upside-down, becoming the place you go to search for and buy a mobile phone -- before you even pick a carrier, number, voice and data plans, or extras, according to this piece in Business Insider, which spells out how this purchase process would work. It's a must read, and, while BI is identifying the business model, eWEEK hereby claims the smartphone-as-a-service (SAAS) moniker.

10. Bonus Point (Cold Water)

With all that's been speculated, from pros to cons of the device, doesn't the timing of all of this seem a bit off? Why would Google seed the Nexus One with employees, then turn around and mass sell it to consumers in January. How much testing could employees possibly do for Google in a few weeks or a month before the search engine is allegedly supposed to turn around and start selling this to the mass market? Seems sketchy, unless of course the only thing that's been completely misreported is the January timeline.

Lil Wayne Album Leaked By Amazon

The holidays have come early for more than 500 Lil Wayne fans who received the prison-bound rapper’s new rock album — Rebirth — almost two months before its scheduled release, thanks to a shipping snafu by Amazon.com.

Lil Wayne will drop Rebirth on Feb. 1– just before dropping into The Big House on weapons charges on Feb. 9 — but this week, several hundred copies of the Grammy-winning rapper’s long-awaited album were sent to Amazon.com customers who had put in pre-orders, industry sources tell Billboard.com.

The online merchant allegedly sent copies of the disc to some customers on its previous release date, which would have been Tuesday, Dec. 15.

If New Moon Doesn't Win Awards, What's the Point of Awards?

Why does the movie industry even give out awards anymore? It's not like anybody cares what they think. New Moon was the biggest phenomenon of 2009, and the critics can't stand it.

Can't stand the movie, or can't stand that you could stand the movie—to the tune of an obscene $268 million domestically so far?

I could make up my own All-Twilight-Franchise Awards to please you people (Best Almost Kiss: Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner!) but that's already out there. It's called the MTV Movie Awards.

You're right, though. Increasingly, the movies Hollywood likes to honor are not the same movies people like you want to see. (The Hurt Locker was great, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press. Did you see it? Exactly.) There are some exceptions—I'll share some examples in a second—but the real question is why.

The answer may kind of insult you...

...and that's that Hollywood—the moviemakers and the critics—seems to kind of not like you.

In fact it just may resent you and your populist tastes real bad. At least, more than it did back when the Academy honored Titanic with the Best Picture crown.

No one can say for absolute certain whether today's Golden Globes nominations are a direct result of this film-geek resentment, or merely a schoolmarmish need to instruct us all on good taste, but it's the best guess box-office historians have got.

"Inherent in the awards process is that the Academy and other industry people want to be the ones who dictate the culture, so if the public has already chosen a movie before them, they'll naturally try to buck it," posits Brandon Gray, who runs numbers for Box Office Mojo. "Not to mention, as wannabe artistes and intellectuals, they think one must appreciate darkness, ambiguity, relativism, primitivism and the gutter among other things."

In other words, Hollywood knows you liked New Moon and Star Trek and Transformers 2—it's wallowing around in all that Twilight cash as I write this. But by nominating brutal fare like Precious and Hurt Locker for Globes and (I'm sure) Oscars, it's saying, "Here's what you should like—ya tools."

But it isn't working.

According to Gray, "2008's Oscar Best Picture nominees were the least popular as a whole in decades, despite Benjamin Button having passed $100 million at the box office," and the underdog appeal of Slumdog Millionaire.

How long has the gap between Hollywood and the masses been growing? For years now. The year 2003, when The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Seabiscuit and other popular titles were nominated, "was the last time the Best Pictures were popular as a whole. Each year since, there's been a tremendous disconnect overall."

Joo Ji Hoon to enlist in 2010

After hoping to get enlisted within the year, it looks like Joo Ji Hoon will have to wait until 2010 to do so instead.

After pleading guilty to using drugs earlier in the year, Joo Ji Hoon had temporarily suspended his entertainment career and revealed his wish to get enlisted in the army.

A good friend of Joo Ji Hoon revealed on the 16th, "Joo Ji Hoon has received an enlistment notice, informing him that he should report at the Euijeongbu 306 reserve army unit in early February 2010. He is now preparing himself to enter the army."

It's expected that after serving the nation for two years, Joo Ji Hoon will make his long-awaited acting comeback in 2012 upon his release.

Charts: KinKi Kids, Kuwata on top; GReeeeN reaches 1 million

"J album," the newly released 11th original album by the popular KinKi Kids, has taken the #1 spot on this week's sales charts. At 170,000 copies sold, it managed to overcome EXILE's "Aisubeki Mirai e," which sold close to 167,000 copies in its second week.

UVERworld's "Neo SOUND BEST" also just came out, selling 108,000 copies to rank #3. Lil'B saw their latest album reach #5, and Mai Satoda with Gouda Kazoku achieved #8.

In singles, Keisuke Kuwata was #1 with his "Kimi ni Sayonara wo," moving 71,000 copies. The rest of the top five were also new releases, coming from w-inds., BoA, GACKT, and L'Arc~en~Ciel (a reissue of their "Hurry Xmas"). Shota Shimizu's new song entered the charts at #8.

This week also saw GReeeeN's album "Shio, Kosho" (released in June) finally reach one million in actual sales, becoming just the second album this year to achieve that, after Arashi's "All the BEST! 1999-2009." This is GReeeeN's first million-seller, and in the 42 years of Oricon's sales charts, it is the only million-seller by an artist that has never been publicly seen. The group's faces have remained a secret ever since they debuted in 2007 while they were all dentistry students.
