T-Mobile Vega Android tablet hands-on

Earlier today T-Mobile and ICD announced their intention to put a 15-inch Vega tablet into every UK household that would pay for one, and we promised to sit down with the two companies for a hands-on play. The Android-based Vega uses the Tegra 250 chipset that we now know as the NVIDIA Tegra 2, and T-Mobile are targeting the slate specifically at the “Mom” segment whom, they hope, will readily adopt it as the linchpin of their family lives.

Rather than slap Android 2.0 onto the Vega as-is, ICD have reworked the OS to better suit their target audience. Perhaps most frustrating for Android geeks (and most sensible for a stable family device) is the absence of the Android Market; instead, ICD want to manage any of the applications present. A calendar app – to which they’re putting the finishing touches to, and didn’t have ready in time for our demo – will be one of the main features, and will pull in shared entries from each family member. Thanks to a SIM card and basic cellular connectivity (that means no 3G, but apparently voice calls will be possible) the Vega can then send out SMS reminders about appointments and meetings. A web interface for the calendar means that users can check and amend it even when outside of the home.

Also in need of some final work is the accelerometer, which wasn’t working on the demo device we looked at. ICD are also considering adding a speaker or two to the included docking station, which magnetically keeps the Vega at a usable angle on an end-table or kitchen counter. It also props the tablet up ideally for watching videos, and the Tegra 2 chipset is 1080p Full HD capable (though the 1377 x 768 screen is only HD Ready).

In all, despite the occasional rough edges it’s an interesting product, and both ICD and T-Mobile seem to be sensibly resisting the urge to make it a geek’s paradise and instead are staying focused on the mass-market. That’ll hopefully bring with it a suitably low price tag, too; neither the carrier or the manufacturer could tell us exactly what the Vega would cost when it goes on sale later in 2010.

Jerry Yan & Ella's homey photos exposed!

Jerry Yan breaks through his idol image for GTV’s new idol drama ‘Down With Love’, wearing a singlet while standing next to Ella; they look just like a newly-married couple. In real life, Jerry also likes to dress simple. He often goes out wearing just a T-shirt, and loose sports pants. He smiled saying: “This way, it’s easy & it feels comfortable.”

In the drama, Ella plays a nanny, and has many scenes with Jerry inside the home. The 2 live under the same roof, and gradually develop feelings for each other. Taking a break from filming, the 2 took playful photos while wearing simple everyday clothes. Under Ella’s lead, Jerry made many cute funny faces, immediately transforming from a handsome cool man to a cute big boy.

Due to his busy work schedule, Jerry doesn’t have time to take sticker photos. As for Ella, she is a big fan of sticker photos, and in the past, she would often take them together with her good friends. But now, she doesn’t go as often as before: “Now, my room is full of SHE's sticker photos, and on my refrigerator, there are also ones of me and my older sister.” Jerry & Ella have become good friends after filming, and during filming, Jerry would suddenly put on a strange voice, or take the initiative to add new lines, making Ella having to think of clever ways to reply, again displaying their good friendship.

‘Down With Love’ will air its Behind The Scenes on January 17th at 10pm. On January 20th, they will hold a grand Asia-Pacific premiere event. Besides Jerry & Ella, the rest of the cast will also attend. Because Jerry & Ella’s work schedules are very full, the production unit specially created human cut-outs of them, and these will be displayed on the streets of Taipei. As long as fans take a photo with the human cut-out, they will have the chance to win special prizes.

Motorola BACKFLIP up close and hands on

The folks over at Motorola were nice enough to give us a deep dive into the new BACKFLIP which will be available Q1. You’re all aware that it features MOTOBLUR, Motorola’s UI over Android, so as far as the OS it’s not different from the CLIQ. The big difference is the form factor: it flips backward, hence its name, to close. As you can see above, it’s “Flippin’ Brilliant.” Man, that hurt.

When it’s closed, you have the deactivated keyboard with 5MP camera and LED flash on one side, and a blank slate on the other (screen safely tucked inside). When you flip it open, it’s like having a mini-computer in your hands — the back of the screen even has a trackpad that you can scroll and click on to navigate the screen. Why? So that shiny screen doesn’t get smudgy when it doesn’t have to. You can also flip it open and set it down to watch videos and use it to play a slideshow of all your images. The bonus is that it can go into dock mode or table-side mode, just like the DROID, except you don’t need to purchase a dock for it. Looks pretty good for a mid-range phone. We just don’t have an official release date yet and there haven’t been any carrier announcements from Motorola, but they do say this will be a global device. LG X300 hands-on: thin, light, and handsome

LG pushed out the bulk of its releases yesterday during its CES press event, but today a straggler has popped up in the ultraportable realm. The X300 (not to be confused with Lenovo's lappie with the same name) is an 11.6-incher that measures just 17.6mm thin and features a reflective keyboard, borderless touchpad (complete with tactile feedback), a 2GHz Intel CPU, 1.3 megapixel webcam and an SSD. It even ships with a spare 2-cell battery for up to seven total hours of operation, and while we know it'll be rolled out worldwide starting next month, there's nary a mention of a price.

Impressively thin and light, and that's really all you need to know about LG's X300. The touchpad and chiclet keyboards are comfortable, but what's really gonna seal the deal is the as-of-yet unknown price tag. Direct your eyeballs this way, why don't ya?

Emblaze Mobile Shows Off Else Intuition, New Linux OS

A new potential smartphone player is showing off its premiere gadget at CES 2010. And it’s made by a small unknown company.

The story of Emblaze Mobile is not well known around the mobile industry. Truly one of the mobile underdogs out there, the Israeli-based company hasn’t had much of a track record for smartphones. It raised a lot of money, bought a bunch of companies, and never really has made much of a profit even though the company’s been around for over a decade. Only two smartphones have even seen the light of day as prototypes: the Edelweiss and Monolith (For the full story, go here).

While the Edelweiss didn’t find a “suitor” and just faded into the night without any success, the Monolith has some promise. Especially now that it is being exhibited at CES under the name “Else Emblaze”, or “Else Intuition”. It was built by Sharp and has a Linux-based touchscreen OS licensed by Access, and offers quite a few respectable features, not to mention adding in the uniqueness factor.

Some of the basic specs of the Else Emblaze include 3.47″ touchscreen with 480×854 res, OMAP 3430 processor, 16 GB internal memory, 5 MP camera, and GPS.

As for the OS, it’s brought to us by Access and is Linux-based. Palm essentially turned down this OS in order to develop WebOS, so we’re not sure if that dooms Access’s OS or not; but if it’s any indication of interest or popularity, this is one of the first times we’ve seen it in action.Emblaze’s focus on this smartphone was to keep things as basic as possible, and didn’t want to throw fluff in that the user would never use.

Check out some of the pics below to see exactly what the Else Emblaze is all about.

Gizmodo has a good point about this device. While Emblaze is optimistic about its chances getting in with US carriers, it’s facing a very difficult uphill battle. For one, Apple and Google already have extremely strong footholds in the US with stable, well-known OS that have thousands of competent apps available for them. This n00b OS from Access doesn’t have a SDK available for it yet, and would take quite a while for anyone to give it any sort of attention or respect. So while we are fascinated by the device itself, we wish Emblaze the best of luck though we expect it to walk the same path as the Edelweiss.

Tavia Yeung is suffering from lip ulcer after kissing scenes with Michael Tse

Tavia Yeung was infected by bacteria during kissing scenes in series. She suffered from lip ulcer and caught colds at the same time.

Since SARS, the government always reminds citizens to take care of their personal hygiene. If anyone catches cold or having a fever, they must remember to take more rest and wear mask to avoid infection towards other peoples. Artistes who film series are unable to avoid this. Even if they catch cold or are suffering from lip ulcer, they still have to film kissing scenes whenever is required. Recently, there are incidents happened in TVB! The day before yesterday, Tavia Yeung was filming new series “The Winter Of The Flying Fish” and had kissing scenes with Michael Tse. The next day, Tavia Yeung was suffering from lip ulcer. Therefore, Michael Tse was accused as the source of lip ulcer!

Tavia Yeung and Michael Tse were filming outdoor scene for “The Winter Of The Flying Fish” the day before yesterday and attracted a lot of passerby to watch. There was passerby who even switched on camera flash to take down the kissing scenes. Michael Tse who was interrupted by them requested them not to switch on their camera flash to continue smoothly in the kissing scenes.

Denied as the source of lip ulcer
However, not until a day after the kissing scenes, Tavia Yeung was suffering from lip ulcer when she was attending a shop opening ceremony event. Everyone was pointing at Michael Tse as the source of lip ulcer! Tavia said, “Yesterday after the kissing scenes, I found out there was ulcer growing on my lips today. I have to remind everyone to brush teeth before kissing scenes. Other than my partners, I myself also have to brush teeth too! (Is it infected from Michael Tse?) I’m just joking! Actually I had a tiny ulcer on my lips the day before yesterday. After the kissing scenes, I think it was infected by bacteria and therefore, it grew into lip ulcer!” Although Tavia Yeung was suffering from lip ulcer, but her mood was not affected by it. She expressed that she wanted to continue accepting outside jobs. “Moses and I will have another job in a few more days. Actually it doesn’t matter on who I’m paired up with. Most important is to earn money!” She expressed that she will not mind pairing up with rumoured boyfriend, Chris Lai to earn money. “I will accept also! If required, kissing scenes are not a problem too. But the price needs to be increased! I will pay all the installments of my apartment when I’ve earned enough money for that. After that, I plan to change apartment!”

Michael Tse was accused as the source of lip ulcer. When he accepted a telephone interview, he gave a huge reaction, “Crazy! Actually I already felt Tavia was nervous during filming the day before yesterday. She said that she was suffering from aphthous ulcer. Maybe because she was too busy recently and did not get enough sleep!” He even teased Tavia and said, “I seldom infected by these things. Not like Tavia who has hot base. I must clarify that I’m not the source of bacteria!”

Arashi's Sakurai Has a Masochistic Face?!

Arashi member Sho Sakurai and actress Maki Horikita attended the press release conference for the new drama "Tokujo Kabachi/特上カバチ!!" in Tokyo a few days ago. The character played by Horikita, an administrative scrivener, is quite "S" and always torments the character of Sakurai. "It is my first challenge to a character of an aggressive career woman." commented Horikita. "She becomes 'S' gradually during the hard work. She feels better when she is more dominant than others." she said with a quick grin.

And Sakurai introduced himself with "This is Sakurai with the masochistic face". The colleague actor Kenichi Endo commented Sakurai's character: "Last time, Arashi appeared in a singing program, and I thought Sho-kun was going to sing. But suddenly he rapped fluently. I was shocked. Though my character in the drama is always angry (with Sho-kun), I admire him a lot." On the other hand, Sakurai mentioned his experience with senior actors with his eyes sparkling: "I don't have a lot of experience in playing with many seniors. I feel quite fresh with Endo-san, Katsumi Takahashi-san, and Masatoshi Nakamura-san. And I have learned a lot from them in a joyful way."

Horikita said jokingly: "Though it is my first time to play with Sakurai-san, Tamura (Sakurai) and Misuzu (Horikita) hate each other in the drama, I try to be unlovely in the always." "It's totally not like this! We couldn't stop laughing in the spot!" Sakurai explained quickly. According to the title of drama, Horikita was asked about the "Tokujo/特上"(premium) experience recently, "It's quite not that luxury yet. I drink tea in a champagne glass. Some one sent me a set of superfine glasses, but I don't drink alcohol in home and I don't want to waste it..." answered Horikita.

Arashi provides the drama's theme song, title is "Troublemaker".

Miley Cyrus Finally confirms co-star relationship with passionate beach clinch

Miley Cyrus has never confirmed that she is dating actor Liam Hemsworth.

But any doubt surrounding the pair's relationship will surely be put to rest after seeing these steamy pictures.

Hannah Montana star Miley, 17, was spotted frolicking on the beach in Australia with The Last Song co-star Liam, 19, earlier this week.

The actress, who spent New Year visiting Liam's family and friends in Phillip Island, Victoria, seemed completely smitten with her new boyfriend as they spent the day at the beach.

Wearing a cropped t-shirt which showed off her washboard stomach and pierced tummy button, teamed with denim hotpants and aviator sunglasses, Miley looked every inch the American beach babe.

Liam went for a 'surfer dude' look in a striped vest top and board shorts, also teamed with the Hollywood wardrobe staple of sunglasses.

Miley, who has been staying with Liam's family for the past week after finishing her world tour, flew back to Los Angeles with Liam yesterday - but not without causing chaos.

Despite managing to keep largely out of sight during her trip, Miley's presence was soon made known by the groups of fans who began waiting outside the Hemsworth family home in the hope of catching a glimpse of the Disney star.

When Miley, who had managed without a security escort for her whole trip, flew home from Melbourne airport, she caused such excitement that she was given a police escort through the terminal and rushed through customs in a bid to escape the paparazzi and screaming fans.

Meanwhile, Miley has spoken about the controversial photographs taken of her by Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair magazine, insisting she had no idea the shots - which show her covering her topless body in a sheet - would cause such a furore.

Miley, the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, said: 'Here, my parents are thinking they're seeing a beautiful picture by a major photographer, and the people of America want to see something dirty in that?

'It doesn't make sense to us because [my family] doesn't look for negativity. But people don't want to say, "What a great performance" or "What a great shot".

'No-one wants to look at something like that and see the positive because it doesn't sell a magazine.'

Miley - who also caused controversy when naughty photographs she had send of herself to an ex-boyfriend were made public - also said she never seeks out scandal, it just seems to find her.

Ellen DeGeneres: Simon Cowell’s ‘Mean’ to Contestants but We’ll Get Along

The new season of American Idol has yet to air, but Ellen DeGeneres has already passed judgment – on Simon Cowell.

“We both like each other and accept one another,” DeGeneres tells the Wall Street Journal. “At the same time I think he’s mean and I think he says things in an insensitive way and I don’t think that’s the way to get a point across. I’ve called him on it to his face. I’ll do the same thing to him (on Idol).”

The talk show host also promises to be opinionated, but doubts she’ll be as warm and fuzzy as her predecessor Paula Abdul, who abruptly quit just before the ninth season began taping.

“I don’t know if I’ll be as nurturing as she is. She always found a positive thing to say instead of attacking,” DeGeneres tells the newspaper. “I’ll probably try to be somewhat encouraging. … But I’ll be honest. I don’t think it helps anybody to be encouraged and not told the truth.”

She jokes that she’s been preparing for her new role — which she’ll have to juggle along with her daytime gig hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show — by taking jabs at people every chance she gets.

“I’m starting to criticize everyone I see, no matter what. I’m like, you thought that was a good outfit to wear?” she says.

Idol’s ninth season begins on Tuesday. After a couple of weeks of guest judges, DeGeneres takes her seat alongside Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi.

Google real-time search: 6 min. to spot quake

At 10:09:36 a.m. PST, a modest but noticeable magnitude 4.1 earthquake rattled the San Francisco Bay Area. Six minutes later, Google's real-time search system had spotted the activity and spiced up its search results.

Earthquakes and plane crashes are among the quintessential examples of a sudden event that produces lots of online chatter, so as soon as I heard about the quake I thought it would be a good time to see how Google handled it.

A Twitter search for "earthquake" was immediately inundated with tweets about the event as the Bay Area's digitally active population uttered a collective exclamation about the event. I immediately searched Google for "earthquake" afterward and refreshed the search until I spotted the in-page scrolling list of real-time results.

The lag was 6 minutes, which struck me as fairly impressive for such a mammoth operation as Google search. However, I'd venture to suggest it wasn't the most demanding test: the earthquake event probably was conveniently located in a digitally hip area; the single word "earthquake" was virtually universally used; and it's the kind of widespread event everybody cares about to some degree, as opposed to something like expiring celebrities, sports results, or gadget launches that only subsets of the population notice.

Google boasted that its real-time search produces not only fast-response results but also high relevance. However, I have to say that many of the items that scrolled past--Whooo, earthquake in Northern Cali!"--struck me as not much of an improvement over Twitter's time-based results. Google also salted up the results with other material--a quick Palo Alto Online story on the quake as well as an earthquake preparation story in the Uxbridge Gazette in the U.K.

Google search shows earthquake-related search results after a quake near San Francisco.

You can argue, though, that just seeing the scrolling real-time result is helpful to tip people off that something is going on right now they might want to be aware of.

A couple other data points struck me here, too.

First, though the first real-time scrolling results showed about 6 minutes afterward, it took another 6 minutes before it showed in my browser when I logged out of my Google account. I'm in Detroit right now, which struck me as the likely explanation; my Google account locates me in San Francisco. With Google now personalizing every search result, Google account or no, different people see different results.

Second, it took until 24 minutes afterward for me to see a link to the United States Geological Survey's online result in the search results, though I confess I wasn't paying close attention to when it first arrived. It wasn't there at the outset, though.

I'll avoid passing final judgment on Google's real-time search based on one person's look at one event, but the data points were still intriguing to me.

The Bad News About the $10 Billion Box Office

Don’t let the record-breaking numbers fool you: Hollywood is NOT in a good place right now. Oh, sure, if you’re a blockbuster-style, $200 million film dripping with special effects, 3-D or hot stars like Robert Downey Jr., you’ll do fine. Those movies are making a killing. Avatar has out-grossed The Dark Knight worldwide in just less than three weeks, and with its miniscule 3% and 9% drop-offs over the last two weekends, it is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon, possibly even threatening Cameron’s old Titanic record (don’t count on that yet, though.) Making things more interesting is the fact that December pushed the box office total over the top, surpassing $10.5 billion in 2009.

But don’t pop the corks yet, because a close examination of those numbers shows that while the overall totals were incredible last year, $7.1 billion of that went to the top 10 movies alone. Of 292 theatrically released and tracked films, 282 of them had to split $3.4 billion; 62 of those films made less than $1 million each – which includes a number of the films you’ll be hearing about in the Best Documentary Oscar category. In fact, we have to get 134 movies into the list to movie 156 before we break $10 million. In 2008, 198 movies made $10 million or more; in 2007, 196 movies did; and in 2006, 193 movies did it. In fact, in order to find a year anywhere near as low, we have to go back to 2001.

So what’s the big deal about that? Independent films, that's what. Even a $1-2 million acquisition will cost $10 million or more once you factor in print and advertising promotions. With fewer movies taking a bigger piece of the larger pie, it's hard enough to convince studios to diversify with cutting-edge films from new voices or those sitting outside the system. But when you can’t even see many, if any, success stories, it becomes even harder. It used to be that if you worked for a distributor and came back from a festival like Sundance without scoring some gem, you risked losing your job. Nowadays, no one is buying. Festivals are overflowing with the unpurchased -- and that especially goes for larger independent productions.

What does it say about the industry when a film like Solomon Kane sits on a shelf? Lacking a U.S. distributor, this fantasy film (adapted from the work of Conan the Barbarian writer Robert E. Howard) was budgeted in the District 9 range, sports a PG-13 rating (meaning dads can take their sons and teens can get in) and it has been getting rave reviews from people outside the fanbase (I’ve seen it and I love the hell out of it.) But no one will pick it up. They’re afraid it looks too much like Van Helsing and feel it needs a bigger star to get it in front of audiences. Looking at this year’s box office, I can’t exactly say they’re wrong (but I really, really want them to be.)

Or what of Tim Allen’s independently produced and distributed film Crazy on the Outside, coming out this week? Tim Allen, standup comedian, sitcom star and blockbuster headliner, directing an all-star cast in a PG-13 comedy. Seriously, nobody wanted that? I know that Allen has been on the outs with the critically minded for quite some time, but my parents will drop 20 bucks to see him yuk it up again. And they’re not alone. Disney couldn’t scrape together some coin for one of their big moneymakers? Nope. Not in this economy. Not when investor cash is harder to come by than chopsticks at a BBQ joint.

And this might just be the beginning. With the success of District 9 and director Neill Blomkamp’s insistence that he is going to stay in that price range for his upcoming films, there’s a good chance that what the studios begin to think of low budget as the $30 Million they spend on their own films (rather than spending the money to pick up independent films), and that they begin focusing the rest on tentpole pictures like Avatar, Transformers and Sherlock Holmes.

Simon Cowell Signs Paula Abdul To $4.5 Million-A-Year Contract With “The X Factor?”

Get ready for another season of Simon and Paula’s signature bickering — on the US adaptation of The X Factor.

Paula Abdul has allegedly inked a $4.5 million contract to bring her loopy commentary to the judges panel on an American version of Simon’s hit UK talent show, The X Factor. That’s interesting, considering the star walked away from her post at American Idol because she failed to secure the $10 million-a-year payday she was vying for.

Apparently, Paula isn’t very good at gambling, is she?

A FOX tipster revealed to The National Enquirer’s Mike Walker: “Simon flew Paula to London and wined and dined her relentlessly over the course of several days, even introducing her to everyone who works on X Factor. But what really clinched the deal was Simon’s pledge that she wouldn’t have to deal with all the nonsense and infighting that she hated on Idol.”

The X Factor America will premiere in 2011.

The Other HP Slate Runs On Android

Last night, during his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer showed off a prototype for a new HP Slate computer running on Windows 7. It was supposed to be an Apple-stealing moment and it was Microsoft’s moment, which is probably why Hewlett-Packard has not yet publicly mentioned that it is working on another tablet/slate computer that is running on Android. You know, Google’s mobile operating system.

HP did announce an Android-powered netbook yesterday, but that has a keyboard. A source who has seen a prototype of HP’s Android Slate says it looks just like the Windows-powered one Ballmer held last night (see image below), maybe a little smaller. “It is almost identical in every respect to the one he showed off except for the OS,” says my source.

And that, my friends, could be all the difference in the world. Already, developers have created more than 10,000 apps for Android mobile phones, and the launch of the Nexus One will keep pushing the OS into more and more hands. These apps might have to be modified for a tablet, but it shouldn’t be too much of a stretch. Already, a number of Android tablets are on the way from Archos, Dell, and Notion Ink. It looks like you can add HP to that list.

The bigger question that all of these Android tablets raise is what about Chrome OS? Maybe these are just stop-gaps until the Chrome Netbooks and Tablets are ready for the market.

What would you rather buy, an HP Slate that runs on Windows 7 or one that runs on Android?

(The video below is a sneak peek at the Windows HP Slate, which is where the image above is taken from):

Dell shows off Android tablet with 5-inch display, maybe for AT&T

Remember that Dell Android MID rumored to be hitting AT&T? Well, Dell has confirmed it today – although it doesn’t call it MID, but tablet, and it doesn’t say it’s for AT&T.

Dell has officially presented some renderings of the tablet (or slate, since this term is en vogue these days), but it didn’t give too many details about it, saying that it’s only a “5-inch tablet concept” with a 5MP camera, and that it should hit the market this year.

The Dell tablet has a SIM card slot, so it really could be launched by AT&T, especially since the Texas-based company has recently confirmed that its Dell Mini 3 Android smartphone is also heading to the second largest US carrier.

Here are the official Dell tablet renderings:

And some live photos, via Pocket-lint:

Dell didn’t announce a price for its Android tablet / slate, but I guess it will be a pretty high one.
