'Avatar' passes 'LOTR: Return of the King' to become second-highest worldwide grosser

With a worldwide tally of $1.13 billion and counting, James Cameron’s Avatar became the second-highest worldwide grosser of all time on Wednesday, according to Box Office Mojo. Avatar passed Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning epic The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which grossed $1.12 billion during its run. Now the world’s top two highest-grossing films (when not adjusted for inflation) are both James Cameron pictures. The top spot, of course, belongs to the director’s 1997 film Titanic, which earned $1.84 billion. Time will only tell whether Avatar will be able to challenge Titanic’s title as the box-office king of the world.
