HTC Desire HD vs. EVO 4G... fight!

By now you've probably read our Desire HD review and you've seen how HTC's latest Android flagship stacks up against its Windows Phone 7 sibling, the HD7. But how does it fare against the original Android giant, Sprint's EVO 4G? The devices share common displays (4.3-inch WVGA) and cameras (8 megapixel with dual LED flash) -- but they use different radios (HSPA+ versus CDMA / WiMAX) and processors (first-generation Snapdragon in the EVO, second-gen in the Desire). In fact, the two phones actually have very different personalities when you consider the Desire HD's aluminum unibody case and the EVO 4G's HDMI output and kickstand. Take a look at these mighty beasts side-by-side in our gallery -- along with a video after the break!

Note: In the video we mention that the Desire HD features a front facing camera. This is incorrect.

Google Co-Founders Wanted Steve Jobs To Be CEO of Google

When Sergey Brin and Larry Page were first looking for a CEO to run Google, they met with Steve Jobs. The Google co-founders left that meeting wanting the CEO of Apple to become the CEO of Google.

According to interviews in Bloomberg's documentary series, Game Changers, that's who the two boywonders wanted as their head honcho. At the time (early 2000's), Sergey and Larry had interviewed some 12-13 candidates to become CEO of Google but didn't like any of 'em. Instead they wanted Jobs, their quote-unquote hero, to be the CEO. Unfortunately Jobs was busy running some other company that was about to embark on a renaissance for the ages.

The Google dudes ended up finding and picking Eric Schmidt who interestingly doesn't really resemble Jobs at all. It's funny to think what would've happened if things played out differently (even if it was probably never serious for Jobs). Maybe Apple and Google wouldn't hate each other. Maybe there would be no iPhone. Or no Android. Ah! Never mind! I like the world as it is now.

Microsoft Has Seen The Light. And It’s Not Silverlight.

Nearly a year ago, Microsoft pulled together a group of reporters for Bing Fall Release event. The highlight of the presentation was a demo showing off some nifty new features in Bing Maps. The problem? All of this stuff required Microsoft’s Silverlight browser plug-in to work. I berated the company for once again pushing users towards a more proprietary web. So today it’s time to laud them, as they seem to be backing away from that strategy.

During last week’s Professional Developers Conference (PDC), ZDNet’s Mary-Jo Foley asked Bob Muglia, Microsoft’s SVP of the Server and Tools Business, why the company failed to highlight Silverlight in a meaningful way this year. His answer was rather surprising.

“Silverlight is our development platform for Windows Phone,” he said. And while he said that the technology has some “sweet spots” for media applications (presumably like Netflix, which uses Silverlight on the web), its role as a vehicle for delivering a cross-platform runtime appears to be over. “Our strategy has shifted,” is how Muglia put it.

2PM’s Taecyeon confesses that Jaebeom’s withdrawal was the worst moment of his life

For KBS 2TV’s “Oh My School“, 2PM’s Ok Taecyeon drew a graph charting the most significant moments of his life, and chose former member Park Jaebeom’s departure as the worst moment.

Ok Taecyeon explained that his life had a total of three crucial events: the first being his immigration to America, his repetitive life as a JYP Entertainment trainee, and finally, 2PM’s former leader’s Park Jaebeom’s withdrawal.

He explained,

“Last year, while promoting ‘Heartbeat,’ I created the ‘Jjit-Taecyeon’ nickname with our zombie performance. That nickname became something indescribable in my life, as our popularity at the time was sky-rocketing. Unfortunately, my life fell straight through the floor in the midst of the ‘Jjit-Taecyeon’ time due to the departure of a team member.”

In his graph, Park Jaebeom’s exit was drawn directly on the bottom edge of the sheet. JYPE terminated Park Jaebeom’s contract this past February, leading to a secession of 2PM activities and the jump into a solo career.

'Saw 3D' collects $10.7 mil on Friday

The Saw franchise’s swan song held a captive audience on Friday, as Saw 3D drained $10.7 million, according to early estimates. (More specifically, the film made $9 million Friday and $1.7 million from late-night Thursday screenings). By comparison, Saw II through Saw V all registered larger opening days, but Saw 3D did manage to trump Saw VI‘s $7 million opening from last year. According to Lionsgate, Saw 3D – the supposed last entry in the seven-film horror series — earned 93 percent of its Friday figure from 3-D showings. The movie’s weekend tally will almost certainly be front-loaded since the series’ die-hard fans likely rushed out to see Saw 3D on Friday (or late Thursday night), and many young adults should be occupied the rest of the weekend with Halloween festivities. As a result, expect the flick to drop on Saturday and Sunday (something every Saw movie has done its debut weekend) and finish the weekend with around $22 million.

Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2 plummeted 71 percent from its massive $20.1 million opening last Friday, earning an estimated $5.8 million yesterday. Figure a weekend total of about $16 million, which will bring the film’s two-week tally to just over $65 million. All eyes will now be watching to see whether Paranormal 2 can match the original film’s final gross of $107.9 million. In third place, Summit’s Red continued to display remarkable resilience — the action comedy slipped only 25 percent for $3.4 million. Jackass 3D didn’t show the same endurance, nosediving 58 percent for a $3.1 million take. Nevertheless, the sociological experiment should pass $100 million by Sunday. And rounding out the top five was Warner Bros.’ Hereafter, which fell 49 percent for $2.1 million. Check back here on Sunday for the complete box office report.

1. Saw 3D — $10.7 mil
2. Paranormal Activity 2 — $5.8 mil
3. Red — $3.4 mil
4. Jackass 3D — $3.1 mil
5. Hereafter — $2.1 mil

Kristen Stewart: No, You Can't Take My Picture!

"It's strange when you become a novelty...It's sort of like, 'Yeah, sure. Go put this on your Facebook so your friends can laugh at it.' And I usually say no to people like that, when they're like, 'Yo, yo, can I get a picture of you?' And it's like, 'No...you [#$*!].' That's what I'm thinking."

—Kristen Stewart chatting with the L.A. Times recently about getting recognized when she's out and about

The article notes how cool and calm Stewart was during the interview until a guy (we wouldn't even say fan since he had to ask her full name) noticed her and asked to get a picture for his girlfriend.

Isn't that why we love this girl—for saying what every other celeb in the world wishes they had the guts to admit?

Whatever, nice of K.Stew to oblige the common folk, but we think she does it with a little more heart when they are real fans.

Justin Timberlake the action hero gives damsel in distress Olivia Wilde mouth-to-mouth

If Jessica Biel is the jealous type, it may be best she keeps clear of Justin Timberlake's latest film set. The 29-year-old singer turned leading man was spotted in a clinch with his co-star Olivia Wilde on the set of his new film, I'm Mortal. He appeared to be giving the brunette bombshell mouth-to-mouth as she lay in his arms.

The film, which also stars Amanda Seyfried, is set in a world where people stop ageing at 25 and must buy time in order to live forever. Justin stars as a young rebel falsely accused of murdering a time-wealthy man.The Social Network star has been under attack away from the camera.

Ron Howard Refuses to Remove Joke from 'The Dilemma'

Universal Pictures addressed the furor over its trailer for 'The Dilemma,' in which Vince Vaughn's character calls an electric car gay, by yanking the clip and editing the remark out of a newly released version.

But tweaking the trailer is apparently as far as the studio -- and Ron Howard -- intends to go.

The director has penned a lengthy statement to an L.A. Times blogger, philosophizing about his own dilemma: cut the line from the finished film, as requested by GLAAD (the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and its supporters, or preserve the inflammatory wisecrack, even if he personally disagrees with the sentiment.

The upshot is that Howard will keep the joke in his final cut. Sources say he considered the matter seriously, consulting various advisers within his studio, his cast and "the larger comedy community," before taking a stand.

Unlocked GSM Palm Pre 2 to be 'available direct from HP,' Gorilla Glass on the front

We've been toying with a Palm Pre 2 for a few weeks now, but given that it's not "final hardware," we can't exactly make any firm judgments on the unit itself. Tim Pettitt, product manager for HP Palm, can. In speaking with MarkGuim.tv (and slyly handling a Verizon Pre 2), he not only confirmed that the company was relying on a layer of the famed Gorilla Glass to keep the front as scratch-resistant as possible, but also that the five megapixel camera is capable of capturing a shot every second. More importantly, however, he made clear that it wouldn't be just the developers nabbing an unlocked GSM Pre 2. According to Tim, that very handset will be "available direct from HP.com," though he stopped short of saying whether it would support T-Mobile's AWS 3G band. For AT&T loyalists, however, we're guessing this may be the best way to nab webOS on the network that's still rethinking possible.

S.H.E. wins big at Singapore Hit Awards 2010; Hebe Tien holds back tears at mention of Selina

Taiwan pop trio S.H.E swept up five awards at this year's Singapore Hit Awards 2010 (SHA 2010) at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday.

Hebe Tien, the only S.H.E. member who was present at the event, collected the trophies for the Asia Media Award (Group), Best Group, Most Popular Group/Band, as well as the Y.E.S. 93.3FM Pick of the Pops: Song of the Year and Y.E.S. 93.3FM Pick of the Pops: Artiste with Most Chart Hits awards, on behalf of the group.

"If I had known I was going to receive so many awards, I wouldn't have worn such high heels!

"My legs are sore, my arms are sore, but I feel great!" joked Tien as she accepted S.H.E's fourth award for the evening.

Tien may have been overjoyed by the trio's performance at the awards, but she still looked a little subdued offstage, probably due to the fact that her group mate Selina Jen was still in hospital after an accident on the film set left her with severe burns.

The 27-year-old almost burst into tears when she spoke of her stricken group mate during her acceptance speech after receiving the award for Most Popular Band/Group, describing the award as being especially meaningful in these difficult times.

Taecyeon and Jessica couple rumor denied

After the shocking news of SHINee’s Jonghyun and Shin Se Kyung being a couple broke out, many heads then turned towards 2PM’s Taecyeon and SNSD’s Jessica being an item.

With what many thought would become a trend, in idols revealing their significant others, unfortunately (or fortunately for many fans) will end here (for now).

The Korea Herald reported, that both JYP Entertainment and SM Entertainment have stated that Taecyeon and Jessica dating is not true.

Denying dating rumors is the typical approach all entertainment labels take, but after the JongKyung incident, does a statement from the labels now warrant enough of a guarantee for you fans to believe in them? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
