Hoo Guy. This is a tough one, isn't it? In our years, we've rarely seen such deafening debate and adulation for a pair of devices. In one corner we have the iPhone 4, coming off a few relatively easy rounds atop the smartphone mind share heap. However, the Droid and its ilk have weakened Apple's spot, and here comes the HTC EVO 4G in for the kill, sporting a larger screen, 4G data, and all manner of HTC sexy. If the devices themselves weren't enough, the debate has turned into something larger and metaphorical, with Apple representing tight restrictions and a singular top down vision, while Google's Android stands for something perhaps a bit more haphazard but democratizing. The gloves come off after the break.

We’ve taken the video cameras of the DROID X and iPhone 4 for a spin, as we wanted to see what 720p looked like on the latest offerings from both Motorola and Apple. Our rudimentary results are in, and the winner is…the iPhone 4. The DROID X records 720p video at 24 fps, while the iPhone 4 records at 30 fps. While 6 fps seems negligible you can really tell the difference in both the indoor and outdoor tests we did. Another thing we noticed is file size. The DROID X records in the 3GP MPEG-4 format, and our 36 second clip was 102.4 MB. The iPhone 4 records in the MOV H.264 format and our 35 second video came in at 47.2 MB. The DROID X records with twice the bit-rate of the iPhone 4 which accounts for some of the difference in file sizes. The DROID X did beat out the iPhone 4 in color accuracy and audio recording quality. Hit the jump, as we’ve got a few videos and screenshots ready for your scrutiny. Make sure to set the video to play in full 720p!
First up is the indoor test; we have the iPhone 4 filming the DROID X, then the DROID X filming the iPhone 4.

Another day, another problem for the iPhone 4. Today’s hot topic issue deals with its proximity sensor. According to a group of concerned iPhone owners on 9to5mac, the proximity sensor on the iPhone 4 isn’t quite sensitive enough and carriers a large potential for in-call issues. Users are reporting that the sensor has a tendency to think the phone is away from one’s face when it is in fact not. This can lead to user’s cheeks doing everything from muting calls to hitting the end button. Our devices aren’t suffering from this issue, but based upon what we’ve read there are quite a lot that are. How is your proximity sensor working out?

Another Apple product launch, another episode of Will it Blend? No cheating this time as far as we can tell, but the production values have certainly gone through the roof for the inevitable iPhone 4 edition and yes, just

Supposedly iPhone 4 reception issues are fixed if you just hold the device differently (uncomfortable and awkward!) or put it in a Bumper case (ugly!). This StealthArmor for the iPhone 4 might be the first attractive pseudo-solution.
StealthArmor appears to be more of a self-adhesive covering than a case, but it's supposed to keep your iPhone 4 free of scratches just the same. As it comes with side panels that prevent your fingers from coming into direct contact with the device's antennas—which is supposedly what causes the reception issues—it might also prevent your signal from dropping:

It hardly seems like a year has passed since ambulances were called to the rented Los Angeles home of Michael Jackson, but June 25 marks the one-year anniversary of the pop star's death. He was pronounced dead at a LA hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. So much has happened during those twelve months, not the least of which is that his estate earned $783 million from album and DVD sales, his 50 percent stake in the Sony/ATV music catalog and various publishing deals. Let's take a look at what's happened in the year since his death.
As you may have read here yesterday, Miley Cyrus is not a fan of blood-sucking dead people.
"I hate vampires," she recently told me.
So what do Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner have to say about that? We caught up with the Twi-trio at last night's Eclipse premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival to find out…
R.Pattz says he has a simple idea to get the "Can't Be Tamed" singer to come over to the fang side. He laughed, "It's so obvious—just watch Eclipse."
Musclehead Lautner doesn't care if Cyrus is hating on vamps. "She doesn't need to like vampires," he said. "As long as she likes werewolves, we're cool."
Stewart was a bit surprised to hear Cyrus dislikes our favorite creatures of the night . "She does?" Stewart asked wide-eyed when we broke the sad news to her. "Is she scared of them or does she just not like them?"

It's the ultimate of ironies that Apple's externalized antenna array in the iPhone 4 -- hoped (and hyped up) to finally give us a phone every bit as good the rest of the device -- has become the cause of most rancor in the immediate aftermath of the handset's release. This morning you'll be rubbing both sleep and disbelief out of your eyes as you read that Apple's response to some people's reception problems with the 4 is to hold it differently. But, before we start ostracizing Apple as the singular offender here, let's hear from a man in the know.
Spencer Webb runs AntennaSys, a company that designs tailormade RF solutions, and has himself worked on making quad-band transceivers for AT&T. As he tells it, almost all phone makers have now transitioned to locating their antennae at the bottom of the phones. This has been in order to move radio wave emissions away from the head (a shortcoming that a top-mounted aerial would incur), which the FCC has been quite demanding about with its SAR standards --
The iPhone 4, however, moved the antenna action from the back of the phone to the sides. This probably improves the isotropy of the radiation pattern, but only when the phone is suspended magically in air.

Curious to see how the latest preview release of Internet Explorer 9 stacks up against the competition when it comes to HTML5 performance in Windows? So was Download Squad, and it's now revealed its findings in some vivid, if not entirely scientific tests. The end result is that Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 3.7 were well ahead of the pack in the 1,000-fish stress test (with Firefox about 5 or 10 percent ahead of IE), while Opera was stuck somewhere in the middle, and Chrome placed a distant last (and maxed out the CPU) -- all with hardware acceleration enabled, of course, although that had to be done via command line switches in the case of Chrome. Head on past the break to check out the four-way showdown for yourself, as well as an earlier test with just IE9 and Chrome.

Are you fascinated with the innards of a mobile device and dying to see what is inside of Verizon Wireless’ flagship DROID X handset? If you answered with an enthusiastic “Yes!”, then check out the disassembly video and 26 photo exposè put together by DROIDX.net. Unlike iFixit which painstakingly identifies each and every component, this disassembly is more a “How-To” guide designed to prep future DROID X owners who wish to take apart their own handset when it lands next month. Potential followers looking to tear down their DROID X should note that there is a no re-assembly guide at this time and should take heed as the phone is useless once it is broken down to its side rails and motherboard. Nonetheless if you’re interest is piqued, hit the read link to gawk at all the guts and glory of this upcoming Android handset.

Sweatin' those iPhone 4 reception issues? Got a thing for beastlier phones? Still perturbed that your white iPhone 4 pre-order didn't exactly "work out" as expected? If you've found yourself nodding that noggin' up and down upon reading any of the above questions, you should know that Best Buy's offering pre-sales of Motorola's forthcoming Droid X starting today. The benefit, naturally, is that you can avoid Verizon's pesky $100 mail-in rebate, paying just $199.99 (plus all applicable taxes and bribes) to BB while grabbing a coveting spot in line for the next giant Android phone. Not like you needed an excuse to take a half-day today, but hey -- at least you've now got a legitimate one.

It looks like EVO 4G users will soon have one more thing to smile about, as Sprint has just announced that an Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) upgrade will indeed be coming to the "superphone."
With the Android 2.2 upgrade, customers can expect improvements to include the following benefits: updates to user interface, improved EAS Support, improved browser performance, including Flash 10x Support, voice dialing over Bluetooth and application storage on external memory.
No word on a timeframe yet, but you'll know as soon as we do -- promise.
