Simon Cowell banks on the Cheryl Cole factor in America ... but Victoria Beckham's chances look slim

Cheryl Cole is being lined up to star in the American version of The X Factor.

The 26-year-old singer, who has enjoyed a successful run on the British show, is lined up to appear alongside Paula Abdul – who left rival show American Idol last year – and rap star Jay Z.

Simon Cowell was offered £200million to judge American Idol for a decade – but turned it away to launch The X Factor in the States.

He is determined to have Cheryl, left, on the show and has already told his aides to start house-hunting for her in Los Angeles.

‘Simon has asked Cheryl to join him on the panel for the debut of American X Factor and she’s delighted,’ says my source.

Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart look for love nest... on the Isle of Wight

Twilight star Robert Pattinson wants to buy a house on the Isle of Wight, where he plans to live with his girlfriend and co-star Kristen Stewart.

Notoriously shy Robert, 23, and Kristen, 19, have never spoken publicly about their relationship, but after a romantic New Year on the island they intend to buy a home there.

‘Rob is a reluctant star,’ says a mole. ‘He just wants a quiet English life, which is why he brought Kristen over for New Year.

Jennifer Aniston ‘Urges Brad Pitt to Dump Angelina Jolie’

JENNIFER Aniston has urged Brad Pitt to dump partner Angelina Jolie.

According to reports, former Friends star Aniston — who divorced Pitt in 2005 after five years of marriage — has told the actor she won’t have anything to do with him until he leaves Jolie for good.

“Brad longs for the serenity and fun he had in his life when he was with Jen and he can’t wait to get back together with her,” a source told the UK’s Now magazine.

“Jen’s made it clear she’s not interested in talking to Brad until Angelina’s out of his life. That gives more incentive to walk away from Ange now.

“Jen has told friends she’s worried about Brad’s appearance, describing him as a ‘walking corpse’.

“She says Brad’s aged by about 20 years. It’s obvious that stress and drinking is to blame for his physical deterioration. Jen believes he’ll fall apart if he doesn’t get away from Angelina soon.”

Google Nexus Two spotted in shape of QWERTY Motorola Shadow?

Salt at the ready? According to the latest rumors out of China, you’re looking at the Motorola Shadow and the device that may just end up the Google Nexus Two. Bearing a marked resemblance to the Motorola DROID, all that’s known about the Android smartphone is pretty much what we can see from the renders; that is, that it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, large touchscreen and distinctive lanyard loop.

It would certainly fit in with some earlier rumors about what Google’s next own-brand Android device might bring to the table. Andy Rubin, overseer of the Android platform, hinted in a recent interview that the next Nexus smartphone might have a hardware keyboard and be more palatable to the enterprise market. Back at the launch of the original Nexus One, Google made no attempt to disguise their intent to promote “best of breed” devices – of which the Nexus One was just the first – through their new webstore.

Next Android version will be called Froyo, says Erick Tseng

Proving once again that those who don't watch The Engadget Show are always going to be one step behind those who do, our latest star guest Erick Tseng has dropped a dollop of exclusive wisdom on us: Android's next big iteration will be known as Froyo. That's short for "frozen yogurt" and fits right in line with the zany naming scheme that has delivered us Cupcakes, Donuts, and Eclairs so far. If you had your money on Flan being next in that alphabetical order, sorry to disappoint. No additional info could be squeezed out of the Google man at present -- such as how much further along Froyo will be from Android 2.1 (technically considered part of Eclair) or when we might expect the upgrade -- but we've got a name and that should be plenty to get us started on another wonderful journey of soothsaying and speculation.

James Cameron Talks 'Avatar' Sequel, Deleted Sex Scenes

Before taking home six Critics' Choice Movie Awards, the director gave us the scoop on the upcoming DVD.

On Friday night (January 15), James Cameron slipped into a tuxedo and descended on the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, stepping into an unfamiliar world like "Avatar" hero Jake Sully arriving on Pandora. Much like the Sam Worthington character in one of the biggest blockbusters ever made, Cameron's mission would be a success — one that would grab him six awards. In other ways, however, it was more like a victory lap.

"Thanks to that MTV online event, you launched the picture!" he grinned when he saw the MTV News team on the red carpet, remembering our exclusive "Avatar" event in early December. "And look what happened!"

Some people would say that a billion-plus dollars at the box office would automatically green-light a sequel. "Yes, now we just have to come up with an idea," Cameron joked. "I have a 6,000-page outline. Now, if I could just reduce that to a shoot-able script."

New "Pandamen" theme song MV by Nan Quan Mama’s Devon and Yu-hao!

Just in time before the debut broadcast of Jay Chou’s upcoming television serial “Pandamen”, the MV to Jay’s latest directorial and production effort was recently released. Premiered nearly simultaneously with the 8-minute trailer that has also been making its rounds on streaming sites, the new MV also showcases scenes from the serial to tease audiences and fans alike.

The original song was sung none other than Devon 彈頭 and Yu-hao 宇豪 of Nan Quan Mama 南拳媽媽 fame, a group that Jay has continued to nurture under his watch. The two vocalists are part of the four-member Mandopop music group that themselves debuted back in 2004, and the song features a theme that’s more at home to classic superhero television shows than the epic orchestral scores that dominate previous Hollywood blockbusters like Superman and Batman.

Jay’s choice to use the two singers from a group that he’s been nurturing clearly show that he still supports his “musical children”, as you can see from a released message by him below:
Regarding Pandamen,

f(x) "We're going to be Asia's best pop-dance group."

SM Entertainment, the source of top idol groups Super Junior, Girl's Generation, and SHINee, has a new ambition: f(x), a group with powerful dance moves and trendy pop-music inclinations, which has placed itself as a strong new contender on the music foreground. With leader Victoria, members Krystal, Amer, Sulli, and Luna form the five-member girl group f(x), which debuted last September with its song 'LAchATA,' receiving much love for its cute and appealing image.

At the question regarding the latest hot issue circling music idol groups, the 'i-dol' nicknames such as "Animal-dol, Chic-dol, Luxury-dol," and what they would want for themselves, f(x) replies with, "Oh? We haven't thought about it. What would be good?" "Personality-dol? Function-dol? Baby-dol?" (tn: Bear with me. These "i-dol" words make more sense in Korean...) accompanied by much laughter, eventually saying "We'll think about it some more before giving you an answer" with cute smiles.

Even though they appear to be no different from other teens with their playful behavior, when asked what their goal is, the answer "We're going to be the best pop-dance group in Asia" reveals the bold ambitions of these passionate artists.

'Book of Eli' beats 'Avatar' Friday

Boxoffice behemoth "Avatar" slipped from the top of the domestic rankings on its 29th day.

Warner Bros.-distributed Denzel Washington-starrer "The Book of Eli" -- produced and financed by Alcon Entertainment -- grabbed the top boxoffice rung in its first day of release with an estimated $11.7 million. But in all likelihood, "Avatar" still will claim weekend bragging rights for a rare fifth consecutive session.

Nielsen EDI considers the weekend a four-day frame, extending through the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday.

"Avatar" fetched $10.4 million in U.S. and Canadian coin on Friday to bring its cumulative domestic boxoffice to $460.9 million. That's just part of an even more impressive $1.43 billion worldwide tally for the 3D sci-fi epic.

Sandra Bullock Donates $1 Million To Haitian Earthquake Relief

The Blind Side’s Sandra Bullock has joined the parade of Hollywood celebs donating to the relief effort in Haiti. The critically-acclaimed star has pledged a $1 million donation to help the victims of the catastrophic earthquake that ravaged the region last week.

Sandra donated the sum to Doctors Without Borders, a medical humanitarian organization that’s been providing vital assistance to victims of the disaster in Port-Au-Prince.

“I wanted to ensure that my donation would be used immediately to meet the needs of the Haitian people affected by this catastrophic event,” the star told The Associated Press Friday.

Joe Jonas: Ready to Go Brotherless Like Nick?

If Nick Jonas can do it, his brother Joe can do it, too.

We're talking about breaking away from the Jonas Brothers for awhile to make his own music.

Joe's being coy about whether he has a Nick Jonas and the Administration-like project up his sleeve, but…

"I'm writing songs right now," Joe told me at last night's Critics' Choice Awards in Hollywood. "I'm writing a lot of music."

The 20-year-old JoBro smiles when asked if he's planning on following in Nick's brotherless footsteps. He declines to say yes or no.

"It's going really well," he said. "I've written about five songs with some of my friends in different bands and things like that. With Grammy Week coming up, all my friends and all these musicians are flying in. I love writing with musicians."

And that's not all that Joe has going on. He's reading scripts.

"I'm looking forward to doing more acting," he said. "I know everybody says this, but I want to be able to do everything. I won't be satisfied until I'm ready to do every kind of role—from a villain to a comedian."

Alibaba Calls Yahoo's Support of Google 'reckless'

Alibaba Group, the owner of Yahoo China, rejected as "reckless" a Yahoo statement supporting Google's stance in the country, after Google said it was hit by cyberattacks from China and may cease business there.

Yahoo, which holds a large stake in Alibaba, gave the Chinese company control of Yahoo China as part of a deal in 2005.

"Alibaba Group has communicated to Yahoo! that Yahoo's statement that it is 'aligned' with the position Google took last week was reckless given the lack of facts in evidence," an Alibaba spokesman said in an e-mailed statement. "Alibaba doesn't share this view."

Google disclosed this week that it had been hit by a cyberattack in December aimed largely at accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. The U.S. company said it would stop censoring its Chinese search engine and that the move may force it to end all operations in the country.

T-Mobile rolls out Windows Mobile 6.5 for Touch Pro2 and Dash 3G, Sprint waits for 6.6 ?

Following closely on the heels of Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile has rolled out Windows Mobile 6.5 for its Touch Pro2 and Dash 3G handsets. The update rolled out earlier than the target date of January 20th and is accessible from T-Mobile’s website once you enter in your handset’s IMEI. While AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile customers now enjoy the new experience offered by Windows Mobile 6.5, Sprint customers are left waiting in the wings. Their patience may be rewarded as Sprint customers may be getting something more than the plain jane Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade. A statement from Sprint suggests that the Sprint flavor of Windows Mobile 6.5 may offer “significant enhancements to the Touch Pro2 user interface which will allow additional customization / personalization options and more integration with the applications users access most.” Is Sprint promoting this upgrade with over-hyped marketing speak in order to placate Touch Pro2 owners or is Sprint really alluding to the mythical Windows Mobile 6.6 which is rumored to be unveiled at MWC 2010 next month?

Germany advises its citizens to say 'nein' to Internet Explorer

Microsoft's revelation that an Internet Explorer security flaw served as an impetus in the assault, Germany's Federal Office for Information Security has released a warning to its population: avoid IE. Specifically, the report calls out the latest three versions -- 6, 7, and 8 -- but let's face it, those older versions should be avoided on grounds of usability alone. Boy, bet the Bonn-based agency is happy about that Windows 7 web browser ballot screen, eh?

Raymond Lam "Asia-Pacific Male Singer", Netizens criticize TVB's "Friendship Award Ceremony"

Yesterday at the "JSG Best Ten Music Award 2009 Presentation", Raymond Lam skipped to becoming the new Asia-Pacific Most Popular HK Male Singer. When Raymond went on stage to accept his award, both cheers and boos were heard among the audience. He was very incoherent, excited and emotional when he gave his acceptance speech, but its not a surprise that TVB changed to help their own "friends" this year. Last night, on the discussion forums there were Netizens criticizing that EEG has become TVB's good friend in award ceremonies compared to previous years.

Critics' Choice Awards: Winners and Losers

Many of last night’s Critics’ Choice award winners were expected (well done, Christoph Waltz and Mo’Nique!), but the night did offer a few surprises. In my mind, here are the biggest winners and losers from the evening.

WINNERS

The Hurt Locker The Broadcast Film Critics Association often goes for the little guy over the Oscar frontrunner (L.A. Confidential over Titanic, Fargo over The English Patient, Sideways over Million Dollar Baby), but the indie drama’s Best Picture and Best Director wins proved it can hold its own against Avatar.

Sandra Bullock The Blind Side star soared past Carey Mulligan and Gabourey Sidibe to tie with Meryl Streep for Best Actress. Never a bad thing to be mentioned in the same breath as Streep.

Susan Boyle on Oprah: First pictures of SuBo on U.S. talk show as fears grow over her erratic behaviour

The first pictures emerged today of Susan Boyle's much-hyped appearance on Oprah as fears grew over her increasingly unusual behaviour.

The images of the Britain's Got Talent star singing Who I Was Born to Be on America's most iconic chat show will hearten her legions of fans on both sides of Atlantic.

But many will be concerned at growing evidence that she may once again be showing signs of not being able to cope with the pressures of stardom.

And with two more examples of her erratic behaviour in just 24 hours, Susan Boyle has done nothing to ease their fears.

The singer launched into a foulmouthed rant at a cafe in her home town after complaining that her personal assistant had told her she needed to go on a diet.

Apple retaliates: requests US import ban on Nokia phones

As expected, Apple just responded to Nokia's ITC request to ban Apple device imports with a US embargo request of its very own. Notice of Apple's complaint (without any detail) was posted yesterday on the website of the International Trade Commission -- a government agency tasked with protecting the US market from unfair trade practices. As you might recall, the whole Nokia v. Apple legal spat started with Nokia suing Apple for infringing upon Nokia patents relating to GSM, UMTS, and WiFi; a claim later expanded to include "implementation patents" covering a wide range of items including camera sensors and touchscreens. While the ITC hasn't agreed to investigate either Nokia's or Apple's complaints, it is customary to do so with investigations usually taking about 15 months to complete. We'll post more when the details of Apple's patent infringement complaint are revealed.

Ballmer doesn't get why Google is upset about attacks

Google was victim of a cyber attack from the Chinese Government recently. Hackers were able to gain access to certain Gmail accounts by using an undocumented Internet Explorer exploit. These attacks were mainly against human rights advocates, and involved several internet companies, including Microsoft and Yahoo.

Google decided that it made sense to revolt by threatening to remove censored content from their google.cn website — something the Chinese Government says is mandatory for anyone operating a website in China. Google is prepared to remove itself from the country.

Steve Ballmer doesn’t have an issue with it though — he can’t think of any good reason Google should boycott the Chinese Goverment in this fashion.

Jay Chou leaves touching message online; filming ‘Pandamen’ is to support friends, not to win a Golden Bell Award

Last year, Jay Chou self-directed his first television series ‘Pandamen’ and it will be broadcasted on January 17th in China, one day before his birthday! Yesterday night at 10pm, Jay left a touching message titled ‘regarding Pandamen’ on his JVR website, and he stressed that filming ‘Pandamen’ is not to win a Golden Bell Award!

Jay Chou’s loyalty to his friends is well-known in the industry. Last year, he had to run back and forward between Taiwan and China, to film ‘The Treasure Hunter’ and to direct ‘Pandamen’, but he did not once complain that he was tired. He expressed that, ‘Pandamen’ isn’t about profitable relationships, but it represents friendship.

Towards his dream ‘Pandamen’ finally about to be broadcasted, Jay could not hide his excitement: “No matter how the ratings do, whether the storyline is good or bad, it has already succeeded because we have created a new hero! This is a historic moment!” From music albums to films to television series, Jay Chou has constantly crossed the border, winning numerous Golden Melody Awards and a Golden Horse Award. This has made people curious as to whether he can also win a Golden Bell Award. But Jay seemed to have read their thoughts and instead declared:”My life doesn’t need to be evaluated by a Golden Bell Award or high ratings, I just hope that you guys can rise to fame, and lead a better life,” strongly revealing his wish of popularizing Nan Quan Mama’s Yuhao & Devon and newcomer Huang Huai Chen.

It's time to stop using IE6

If your organization is still using Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP, just stop. Stop it now.

The marketplace is filled with credible alternatives to IE6, including Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. If you need to use Internet Explorer because it’s required for compatibility with specific websites or apps, you have alternatives from Microsoft itself. IE6 was replaced with the newer, more secure Internet Explorer 7 in October 2006, more than 40 months ago. And Internet Explorer 8 was released in March of 2009, nearly a year ago. Both browsers have large improvements in usability, including tabbed browsing, but their biggest selling point is security.

Any IT professional who is still allowing IE6 to be used in a corporate setting is guilty of malpractice. Think that judgment is too harsh? Ask the security experts at Google, Adobe, and dozens of other large corporations that are cleaning up the mess from a wave of targeted attacks that allowed source code and confidential data to fall into the hands of well-organized intruders. The entry point? According to Microsoft, it’s IE6:

Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock Seal Tie for Best Actress with a Kiss

Pop the champagne and raise a glass! It may have just been the first big awards show of the year, but Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep shared a win – and a kiss – at the 15th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards in Hollywood, making for an entertaining night.

"This is bulls---," Bullock said jokingly Friday before lip-locking with Streep, whom she shared best actress honors with (she for the Blind Side and Streep for Julie and Julia). The tie was an obvious surprise, but as the audience cheered, Bullock exclaimed: "This is an honor."

Later in Bullock's acceptance speech, she referred to similar parallels between her and her co-winner, saying that she loves "food and sex like Meryl. ... That's how similar we are. You guys just didn't notice it until now." Bullock ended her speech by admitting, "Meryl is a good kisser."

HP EliteBook 8440w lives up to its "workstation" title, says the reviewing masses

Since the royal unveiling of HP's six new Elitebooks and ProBooks last week, the Elitebook 8440w (w standing for workstation) has been making the review rounds, and receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from the chaps at Notebook Review, LAPTOP and Computer Shopper. All were impressed by the Core i7-620M and NVIDIA Quadro FX 380M power that's been crammed into the 14-inch chassis, but unsurprisingly that causes some warm underside temperatures. Other than that, the 8440w received high praise for its durable gunmetal-build and "exceedingly" comfortable keyboard, but the touchpad was noted as being too small. Actually, the guys over at Notebook Review even go as far to say that the laptop would be "absolutely perfect" if that pad and its buttons weren't so squished. Now that's quite a bold statement. All in all, the 8440w seems like a solid and very mobile workstation, but hit up the sources if you're dying to know more about the $1,650 rig.

Palm Pre Plus & Palm Pixi Plus – Pricing Leaked

While we’re learning more about the Palm Pre Plus and the Palm Pixi Plus in terms of their hardware and specs, according to an anonymous tipster at PhoneArena, Verizon’s pricing for its first two WebOS smartphones has been leaked. The Pre Plus will be purchasable for $150 (after $100 rebate, with a cellular contract) and the Pixi Plus for $100 (again probably after a rebate).

These prices sound fairly reasonable, (and equally match Sprint’s pricing, but these are the faster models) but note that this information is by no means completely comfirmed. If things go according to plan for Verizon, we’ll get to know exactly how much both smartphones will cost on January 25th.

Feel free to send us any more concrete tips about the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus pricing. We’d love to get this rumor confirmed.

LG releasing Windows Mobile 7 phone in September and Android 2.1 in April?

First LG flat-out says on public record that Windows Mobile 7 is bound for 2010, and now we've gotten apparent word that the company has narrowed said release window to September of this year -- at least as far as its own devices are concerned. That comes via high-profile French tech blogger Eric of Presse Citron, who while attending a LG Design Lab tweeted (both in French and immediately after in English) that LG Mobile will release a Windows Mobile 7 device in September and an Android 2.1 device in April, first in the US and then Europe just after. The tweets are now gone, but WMPoweruser managed to catch both via Google cache, while we have corroborated just the French one by similar means. So, misheard claims from the company or accidental slip-up of NDA'd secrets? MWC is starting to look more and more interesting.

Show Luo has interracial relationship in new MV: "As long as it's..."

Show Luo, whose “Rashomon” album has just come out today, has already topped KKBOX’s MV charts with his second single “Xi Guan Jiu Hao/ As long as I’m used to it”. Although he admits that his English isn’t very good and that he has never thought of dating a foreigner, Show has accomplished an interracial love story in this MV with the help of his record company.

In the MV, Show goes to New York alone. Even though his girlfriend has already left him, he still can’t forget their past: sleeping on the coach together; she waking him up; cooking together in a romantic atmosphere. Now he sleeps alone and no one wakes him up. He can only find restaurant leftovers to eat in the refrigerator. As he is lonely, all he can do is sigh in despair.
