The Best Songs Of 2009, In Bigger Than The Sound

MTV News' James Montgomery picks his top 25 songs of the year.

In 2009, we killed Auto-Tune, we partied in the U.S.A., and we howled "Awooo!" at the moon (en español, no less). And those were some of the more normal moments of the year: Seriously, there is no way to sum up a year that had so many bizarre and scandalous moments, so let's have the songs do it for us.

These are my picks for the Best Songs of 2009: odes to abstinence and combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bells, songs of sadness and beauty, tunes about getting loaded and getting revenge. They're all important in some way, and they all helped guide us through the tumultuous past 12 months. But that's enough from me, let's get to the songs ...

25. Black Eyed Peas: "I Gotta Feeling" Twenty million Peas fans can't be wrong — and certainly not in this case. The song that dominated the Billboard Hot 100 (#1 for 14 straight weeks) also happens to be an effervescent, electro-tinged blast, managing to capture the promise of a million Saturday nights. Also, it's the only song on this list to feature the phrase "Mazel tov," which counts for something.

24. Mastodon: "The Last Baron" Thirteen minutes of doomy, interlocking guitars, pummeling drums and whiplash-inducing time changes that climaxes with the best guitar solo of the year — a fiery, fret-wrecking two minutes that will make your skull explode. It's about inter-dimensional time travel, just in case you were wondering.

23. Ke$ha: "TiK ToK" On the basis of this song alone, Ms. Sebert seems like she'd be a fun girl to party with.

22. Wale: "Chillin' " A lean, mean slab of swagger-hop from our nation's capital. Spindly, urgent beats floating above a chopped-up sample of Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," Lady Gaga on the hook (channeling M.I.A.) and some deft wordplay from Wale himself ("I remain a Giant, and you're Jeremy Shockey") make this one great. And the Ben's Chili Bowl cameos in the video are a nice touch, too. (R.I.P., Ben Ali.)

21. Franz Ferdinand: "No You Girls" The swaggering soundtrack to your favorite Saturday night activities (knife fights, sex in bathroom stalls, shame), from a group of Glaswegian guys who are apparently well versed in all three. It's great, strutting guitar rock, and why this song — and its accompanying album, Tonight — weren't bigger deals is beyond me.

20. Miley Cyrus: "The Climb" You want a classic, throwback pop ballad? You got it, courtesy of Ms. Cyrus. Somber piano? Trilling strings? Nondescript-yet-inspirational message about overcoming adversity? This song's got it all, and it bears mentioning that Miley sings the bejeezus out of it, too.

19. The Flaming Lips: "Watching the Planets" A pounding, primal song about all the nebulous, intangible things we rolled into 2009 talking about ("hope," "change," etc.) that's also one of the first to suggest that perhaps none of it holds any water. When Wayne Coyne yelps "Oh oh oh oh oh/ Finding that there ain't no answers to find," he isn't just talking about black holes, you know.

18. Brand New: "At the Bottom" Ominous, snarling rock about death and burial and prescription drugs and other cheery topics of that sort. Full of loud/soft crashes, blurry fretwork and a positively crushing chorus, it's feel-bad music for feel-bad times.

17. Kelly Clarkson: "I Do Not Hook Up" Originally written for Katy Perry, it's probably a good thing she passed on it, since I can't imagine anyone other than Clarkson doing it justice. It's breakneck electro-pop with a big, rushing chorus and vocal fireworks galore. The best Kelly Clarkson song in years, from the best Kelly Clarkson album in years (All I Ever Wanted). We all win, even Katy Perry.

16. Lady Gaga: "Bad Romance" Deliciously over-the-top pop, as only Lady Gaga can do it. From the opening techno haze (which sounds like it could've been lifted off a Ministry of Sound comp) to Gaga's delightfully silly vocal ticks (the whole "Ga-ga, ooh-la-la" thing) to the whirring, wooshing backing beat, this is decidedly arty fare, with a bizarre video to match. Only, there's the chorus, a wondrous thing that can convince a million soccer moms to click the download button (or have their daughters do it for them) ...

15. Kid Cudi: "Pursuit of Happiness" A molasses-thick beat courtesy of the guys in Ratatat, a slurry, slippery delivery by Cudi, a knocking chorus and a cameo by MGMT. It's like a blog decided to make a posse cut, minus all the negative comments!

14. Thom Yorke: "All for the Best" Thom and his brother Andy cover the Miracle Legion, turn the song into a swooning, somber electronic daydream. It's take-a-picture pretty, like that image of your loved one in bed on a Sunday morning, laughing, sun streaming through her (or his) hair — perfect in ways only you can understand. When Yorke sang, "This will be on my video tape," this is probably what he was talking about.

13. Lily Allen: "Not Fair" Over the course of one week, I heard this song on the radio in New York, Paris and Rome, and each time, all the women in the immediate vicinity nodded in agreement to Lily's razor-sharp dissection of a less-than-giving lover. Then they all laughed at the oral-sex line — it seems dissatisfaction is universal!

12. Paramore: "All I Wanted" The 2:40 mark: That's when it happens. All the din falls away, and Hayley Williams — all five feet of her — is left by her lonesome. The tape is rolling, the clock ticking, and the engineer is peering at her from the other side of the glass. So she draws a breath and positively empties herself into the chorus, going bigger and getting higher than she's ever been before. You can practically hear the heads exploding in the room. It's the best vocal moment of 2009, signifying not only Hayley Williams' transformation from a kid with Kool-Aid-colored hair to a full-grown woman, but her arrival in the pantheon of truly great rock vocalists. Welcome to the club.

11. Rihanna: "Russian Roulette" We spent the second half of 2009 waiting to see how Rihanna would respond artistically after Chris Brown's assault on her, and with "Russian Roulette," we finally got our answer: She's hurt but strong — and changed. This is a sonorously sad song, full of self-doubt and self-eviscerating lyrics, proof that Rihanna has depths we never thought possible. And that she's human, just like the rest of us.

10. Das Racist: "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell (Wallpaper. Remix)" Gloriously garish joke-rap, or slyly brilliant commentary on the twin evils of capitalism and globalization? Yes! As someone smarter than me commented, " 'Pizza Hut' is either the track we, as a culture, need right now, or the track we, as a culture, deserve — or both" My favorite version is the (somewhat derided) "Wallpaper. Remix," which sets the dumb banter ("I got that pizza butt/ I got that pizza butt") to blaring sorta-sax and a cheesy Casio/ Eurotrash backbeat, which seems strangely perfect to me ...

9. Miley Cyrus: "Party in the U.S.A." OK, so I took Miley to task earlier this year for this song not meeting all the requirements of a party anthem — but it's still a great single! All that matters here is the sentiment: that a good song can make all the difference, that a DJ can save your life, and that the butterflies really can fly away. Really, what more could you ask for from a pop song? A deliriously catchy robo-beat? Vague notions of patriotism? A Daisy Duke-fueled video? Well "Party's" has all that, too. More proof that this is the greatest nation on earth.

8. Jay-Z (featuring Alicia Keys): "Empire State of Mind" This was a pretty good song before the Yankees ruined it (more reason for us Red Sox fans to hate A-Rod) ...

7. Phoenix: "1901" Ridiculously catchy indie-pop, "1901" bobs and weaves and pumps its fists, but not before it checks its hair in the mirror first. Fashionable, smart stuff that re-imagines bookish subjects like "post-modernism" and "neo-classicism" as danceable, radio-ready rock (and sounds like it was lifted from every John Hughes movie ever made) — nobody did it better than Phoenix in 2009. From the library to the club, without a moment to spare, although of course, they're French ...

6. Yeah Yeah Yeahs: "Zero" I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a big fan of It's Blitz, but there's no denying the catchiness of its first single, a strutting, joyous thing that builds to a positively giddy crescendo. This is basically a smart and sexy disco song, complete with Karen O's vocal coos and a pounding backbeat.

5. Matt & Kim: "Daylight" I think this actually came out late last year, but it definitely made its mark in 2009. Homemade spaz pop from a pair of Brooklyn dumpster divers, "Daylight" is fuzzy and hissy, yet outshines songs that cost four times as much when it comes to sheer bliss. You'd be hard pressed to match the wide optimism of Mr. Johnson and Ms. Schifino, and with their shout-sung vocals and ham-fisted drumming, they've created a tune that proves you can get high on life.

4. Grizzly Bear: "Two Weeks" A sunny, shiny creature with a deceptively dark heart beating beneath its skin, "Two Weeks" is perhaps the best example of Grizzly Bear's brand of hazy dream pop, all pitch-perfect vocal harmonies and casually plinked piano. But like I said, there's something more here. Maybe it's the ultra-creepy video, or the ghostly, otherworldy quality of the song, but this also sounds like the kind of thing that plays on repeat in Charles Manson's brain. Then again, maybe that's just me — the best songs make you think, after all.

3. Shakira: "She Wolf" The battiest song released by a major artist this year, "She Wolf" is wondrous for innumerable reasons: the Italo-disco boogie, the "Awooos," the fact that Shakira compares herself to a coffee machine in an office. It's a delightfully strange pop song, no bones about it, and proof that perhaps Shaki is wackier than you might have thought. And while all of that is well and good, what I like best about it is that Shakira was brave enough to release it — sometimes you've just gotta applaud that kind of determination, and dance to it, and watch the video over and over again.

2. Animal Collective: "My Girls" The indie song of 2009, and the soundtrack to a million acid flashbacks, "My Girls" represents one of the most important rock acts of the decade finally realizing their potential. Having explored the depths of avant garde, AC turned their attention to pop music and discover, "Hey, we're pretty great at this, too." Icy synthesizers, pounding drums, vocal "Wooos!" and other sundry, "My Girls" recalls all seasons and all eras — but mostly, it just sounds like tomorrow. You'll be hearing this blasting out of the trunks of hovercars for decades to come.

1. Jay-Z: "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)" Jigga might not have eradicated Auto-Tune in 2009, but you've got to commend the guy for trying. And that's why "D.O.A." is the best song of 2009: Jay's thinking globally but acting locally, and he's getting angry in the process. The No-I.D. beat — the angular guitars, the Klezmer breakdown — sounded like nothing else on the radio, even if Jay didn't intend for the song to get played on the radio in the first place. Which is more proof of his reach as an artist, of his stature as the biggest name in hip-hop: He's so huge he can put his fellow artists (not to mention the whole industry) on blast, and they still line up to pay their respects. To anyone else, a song like this would be career suicide, but it only made Jay stronger. From here, anything is possible. And if he's claiming he'll only wear black for a year straight, it's probably because he murdered everyone else in the game ...

Jay-Z at No1. What's wrong with MTV News?

Stars night as Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga spice up the Vevo launch

Rihanna was in superhero mode as she headed up a crowd of divas at the launch of a new music video website last night.

She wore an open cropped jacket with huge shoulder pads - with apparently nothing underneath - and high-waisted trousers.

But it was the huge gold belt and matching bangle with spiky gold shoes that had the fashion-forward singer looking like a cross between Wonder Woman and Catwoman.

The Russian Roulette singer was at the launch of website Vevo in New York last night with Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga.

Country singer Taylor Swift looked her usual elegant self by playing it safe in a simple black dress with embellished shoulder detail, black court heels and low-key accessories.

Mariah Carey, who gave a speech at the event, was also there with husband Nick Cannon, and dressed in figure-hugging black.

Lady Gaga was her usual quirky self, dressed in a full-length grey gown with her blonde hair styled in a bow and very dark eye make-up.

She performed at the launch after flying back to New York from the UK after her wacky show at the Royal Variety Performance in Blackpool on Monday night.

Singers Justin Timberlake, John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Pete Wentz, Ciara, 50 Cent, Mary J Blige and Bono from U2 were also at the star-studded event.

Vevo, launched by Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, will feature high definition videos, lyrics and merchandise.

As well as stars from those two music giants, artists from EMI Music will also be available.

Vevo also contains programing from CBS radio stations and Last.fm and, so far, around 30,000 videos are available.

The aim is to create an MTV for the digital age after viewers started switching off TV music channels and turning to the internet.

Music videos are already hugely popular on YouTube, attracting millions of hits a day.

However, they generate little advertising revenue because the video is often grainy and surrounded by content created by amateurs, making them unattractive to advertisers.

But the content will be powered by searches in YouTube and can be watched on the site through a VEVO-branded channel, as well as at VEVO.com, and through a VEVO-branded embedded player

The site, which will be free to watch, will be available in Britain next year.

DROID beats iPhone 3GS in TIME Top 2009 Gadgets list

In a move almost guaranteed to provoke controversy, TIME have announced their “Top 10 Everything of 2009″ list and the Motorola DROID pips the iPhone 3GS to the post for the number one spot in the gadgets category. In fact, Apple’s latest smartphone slots into fourth position, trailing the Barnes & Noble nook in second place, and – somewhat bizarrely, for all that we appreciate the engineering involved – Dyson’s Air Multiplier fan in third place.

About the DROID, TIME say it’s not only “kick ass” hardware wrapped around Android, but that it’s “a hefty beast, a metal behemoth without the gloss and finish of the iPhone, but you don’t miss it.” Verizon’s “best-of-breed” 3G network also scores the Motorola some brownie points. Meanwhile the iPhone 3GS seems to suffer by virtue of the only moderate updates over its 3G predecessor; “Take the iPhone. Make it faster. There, you’re done” says TIME, somewhat cuttingly.

The list follows on with the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV DSLR, Dell Adamo XPS notebook, Nikon FinePix Real 3D W1 point-and-shoot camera, Casio G-Shock GW7900B-1 digital watch, Monster Beats Solo by Dr. Dre headphones and finally Panasonic’s G10-Series plasma HDTVs. This sort of thing is always going to be contentious, but we reckon there’ll be some angry talk in Cupertino this week.

Show Luo and Rainie Yang: From loggerheads to lovey-dovey couple

Show Luo and Rainie Yang were once at loggerheads with each other due to a misunderstanding many years ago. Now, the two Taiwanese stars are onscreen lovers in the idol drama serial, Hi My Sweetheart.

They buried the hatchet when Rainie mustered up courage and confronted Show on their misgivings with each other, which put an end to their differences and the tension between them.

Both Show and Rainie have been photographed heading in and out of the film set of the drama together, giving rise to dating rumours, which both refute.

However, photographs posted on Show's blog recently have further fuelled dating speculations. Seen holidaying together in Las Vegas, Show and Rainie were photographed wearing matching outfits as if they were a couple. Besides sharing goofy photos together, they also visited Michael Jordan's restaurant and ordered a table full of dishes.

A representative shared that Show's vacation to America would be the last holiday before he prepares for his concert world tour.

Wonder Girls stripped down to their panties!

As previously mentioned, the Wonder Girls recently hosted a livechat for their fans on Stardoll.com. The event was a success with many fans asking all sorts of quirky questions.

However, none of that matters. What's important here is how Stardoll.com is promoting the Wonder Girls. I present to you, the Wonder Girls dress up game! I know what you're thinking, "So what? Okay, you can dress up the Wonder Girls, big deal!" Well, you're missing the point. Whenever there is a dress up, there's also going to be a dress down. And here you can dress the girls all the way down to their panties, even the underage members! Talk about a grave mistake on Stardoll.com's part. I feel bad for the Wonder Girls, I'm not sure if they even know about this.

Granted it's just an illustration, and they use a standard body for all the dolls, but nonetheless, AWESOME.... I mean wrong, very very wrong... but awesome!! Like when you make out with your really hot cousin during a family reunion, awesome... but so so wrong.

By the way, just a word of advice, don't undress the underage members to their panties. Just take my words on it. I'm currently writing this article in jail while desperately fighting off the other inmates who are undressing me down to my panties. I knew today was a bad day to wear panties. I just had that feeling! That "Don't wear panties today because you'll be arrested and stripped naked in prison" kinda feeling you know? Oh come on, you know that feeling!

Jennifer Aniston to Be Adam Sandler's Wife?

Well, she could do a lot worse.

But unlike the real-life wedding ceremony Aniston shared with Brad Pitt, this time the star is looking to join Adam Sandler for a romantic comedy called Pretend Wife, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Details are sketchy, but the project seems in a similar vein to her other upcoming comedies The Baster and The Bounty—and a bit less like the one where she'll play a singing jailbird.

We're ready to commit. Are you?

Jessica Simpson Dating Billy Corgan?

Musical worlds are colliding, if reports that Jessica Simpson is dating the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan are to be believed.

"She has fallen hard and is smitten," a source tells E! News, which reports that the 29-year-old romantically unlucky singer and Corgan, 42, are "officially dating."

When reached by PEOPLE, a rep for Simpson wouldn't comment – but also didn't deny the alleged romance.

Of course, the two – photographed together in New York Friday – may simply be working on one of music's most mismatched duets, but until it hits the airwaves, this is one potential relationship we're keeping our eyes on.

60 Million People A Month Use Facebook Connect

Facebook’s Director Development Network Ethan Beard took the stage at the Le Web conference in Paris to talk about the status of Facebook Connect.

Beard’s talk focused on the notion of identity as defined by connections – to people, things, places, etc. “We aspire to be a technology that people use to connect to things they care about no matter where they are,” he says.

More than 80,000 websites and devices (including iPhone and Xbox) have implemented Facebook Connect since it launched in December 2008, says Beard. And more than 60 million Facebook users use Facebook Connect each month. And it’s not just a lot of small sites using the product. Two-thirds of comScore’s US Top 100 websites and half of comScore’s Global Top 100 websites have implemented Facebook Connect. And some of these sites are even bigger than Facebook (perhaps not for long though).

Sites like the Huffington Post have seen a 500% increase in Facebook referrals after implementing Facebook Connect, says Beard.

500,000 applications have been built on Facebook, says Beard. Facebook has been surprised by the growth of social gaming (playdom, Zynga, Playfish, etc.). The growth has just begun in social gaming, says Beard.

Beard also says over 70% of Facebook users are from outside the U.S.

First Mobile Firefox enters home stretch

Mozilla is wrapping up work on its first version of Firefox for mobile phones, an important step in bringing the second most popular PC browser to an area where a rival project holds more influence.

"Our goal is to have a release candidate next week," said Jay Sullivan, Mozilla's vice president of mobile. "If things go smoothly, we'll have a (final) version out in the next few weeks," with the debut planned for this year, he added.

Mozilla has been a leader in advancing the Web state of the art. But when it comes to the mobile phones, where the power of a new generation of hardware has transformed browsers from primitive afterthoughts to useful tools, Firefox has been missing in action.

Instead, an open-source project called WebKit powers the browser on the higher-end mobile phones du jour--Apple's iPhone, the Palm Pre, and Motorola's Droid and other models running Google's Android operating system, with BlackBerry headed that direction, too.

In contrast, the first mobile Firefox version will run on Nokia's powerful but relatively obscure new N900, a $569 hybrid computer and mobile phone that uses Nokia's Linux-based Maemo operating system. A Windows Mobile of mobile Firefox is set to arrive next year, and Mozilla has begun working on an Android version now that Google released a native developer kit.

Firefox has one big thing going for it, though: it's a close relative of the PC-based browser that today is used by about a quarter of people on the Web.

The link extends beyond brand familiarity. For one thing, mobile Firefox is based on the same code as the present Firefox 3.6--also a beta version due to finished by the end of 2009. For another, through a Mozilla service and browser plug-in called Weave, mobile Firefox synchronizes bookmarks, passwords, and even open tabs with the desktop version of the browser.

In addition, Firefox for the N900 can run many Firefox extensions--AdBlock Plus among the 30 or so now available. Sullivan recommends updating their interfaces for the small devices, though.

Nokia partnership

Mozilla has been working closely with Nokia to develop Firefox on its N900 handset. It already ships with a lighter-weight browser that uses the same Gecko code base as Firefox, but the full Firefox mobile version--a project code-named Fennec--is more powerful.

"You want to put the desktop experience into a pocket-sized device," said Ari Jaaksi, vice president of Maemo devices. "What do people use on the desktop? Firefox."

However, Firefox won't ship with the device, at least initially. The company is open to the idea of including it in the next version of the operating system, due in the second half of 2010, Jaaksi said. Mozilla, meanwhile, is comfortable with the idea of people having to actively download the browser, the most common way Firefox has been distributed on PCs.

The N900 is available as an unlocked device through various retail channels, but Nokia doesn't yet have any partnerships in the United States with wireless service carriers who might help bring the N900 to a broader market. It's a relatively powerful device with a 600MHz processor and 3D graphics hardware--enough oomph to run Adobe Flash on Web pages today. Its price may seem high, but bear in mind that unlocked devices don't get a subsidy by carriers that expect to see their up-front payment returned over months of subscription payments.

So does Firefox require this level or horsepower?

"We need pretty high-end stuff to make the Web great," Sullivan said, but not so high-end that the N900 is the only handset to fit the bill. "Everything now on the mid- to high-end is fine."

WebKit has intercepted the newer generation of smartphones. Through the wonders of Moore's Law, new devices get steadily more processing power and memory. So aiming for today's top-end phones can mean software will work on tomorrow's mainstream models.

The N900 is at the top end of the range, but Firefox runs elsewhere, too. The Windows Mobile version of Fennec is in alpha testing now, lagging the Maemo version by about three or four months, Sullivan said. Mozilla plans to release it in final form in the first half of 2010, he said.

Firefox: like an operating system?

Mozilla has a lot of plans for mobile Firefox that, to some extent, put it in opposition with Nokia. The N900 is aimed in part at programmers who want to low-level control over a device through its Linux operating system. But Firefox--like Google's Chrome--is assuming the role of a general-purpose foundation for running programs.

"We're almost an operating system," Sullivan said.

Several features support the direction. Built into Firefox now is geolocation, which lets a Web application tap into the phone's services to figure out where a user is and, for example, show a map of the nearest pizza shops. Also included is support for orientation detection, important for games, and offline data storage, important for a variety of programming needs.

There's more on the way in 2010, Sullivan said:

• Support for multitouch displays for a more sophisticated user interface.

• Support for haptic feedback, such as the phone vibrating when a virtual keyboard key is tapped.

• The ability to control a camera.

• Support for Electrolysis, Mozilla's project to split tasks such as the user interface, tabs, and plug-ins into separate processes. That improves stability and performance, he said.

• Support for JetPack, Mozilla's next-generation extensions system.

S• Integration of the Weave synchronization software so it's no longer a plug-in.

• Support for WebGL, an interface to provide browsers with accelerated 3D graphics.

• Faster execution of JavaScript programs that are common and increasingly powerful on the Web.

Applications that run natively on a device--whether directly on the hardware as in the case of the iPhone or on the Java-derived layer called Dalvik on Android--are an important area of mobile development today. But the Palm Pre uses a browser-based application design.

"It's the right model. It's not there yet," Sullivan said of Web-based programs. Today programmers must create separate versions of applications for BlackBerry, Nokia's Symbian, Android, the iPhone, and other mobile phones.

But that profusion will be replaced by the universality of the Web, he predicted.

"In three years," Sullivan said, "80 percent of those applications are going to be Web-based."

Wang Lee Hom doesn't care that he earns less than Jay Chou; Disagree with the boycott of the Golden Melody Award

Alexander Wang Lee Hom earned 2.88 billion in 2006 and was the Top Earner of that year. The next consecutive three years, he lost to Jay Chou though. Lee Hom gracefully expressed that he's performance has been inadequate and he needs to put in more effort when asked regarding this issue. He also expressed his surprise to the news that there are music companies refusing to take part in the Golden Melody Award and exclaimed that the music industry needs to stand united.

Few days ago, Lee Hom was the spokesman for an event and when he was questioned about the release date of his next album, he revealed that it will be released when its completed. There has recently been news that music companies are refusing to participate in the Golden Melody Award and Lee Hom was very surprise. Although he himself will be unable to participate as his album couldn't be completed in time, he still felt that the music industry needs to be more united. Even if there is unjust judging, they should not use such a method to object.

Lee Hom's new movie "Little Big Soldier [大兵小將]" will clash with Jay Chou's "The Treasure Hunter [刺陵]" in airing and the recently revealed earning list for singers showed that Lee Hom lost to Jay's 5.5 billion. He joked that it was his own performance being bad! As both of them have good compositions, its unavoidable that they'll get compared. Lee Hom thus contrasted them to "Apple" and "Microsoft", saying that its a healthy competition between him and Jay.

Recently, Lee Hom has been moving towards acting and 2 years ago, in Director Lee An's movie "Lust, Caution", he acted as Kuang Yu Min. According to recent news reports, besides being busy with his upcoming album, Lee Hom's new movie that is both scripted and directed by him, will begin filming too. Lee Hom revealed that the on screen pairing is a very fresh one and he hopes that everyone will like it. He also promised that his new album will be released as soon as its completed and estimated that the new songs will premiere on New Year. He will be using Teresa Tang (鄧麗君)'s sweet voice and have a duet with her, crossing through the time gap.

Lee Byung Hun under fire for luring girl into bed

Lee Byung Hun of IRIS and G.I. Joe is under fire for supposedly toying with a girl.

22 year old Kwon Mi Yeon from Canada, claims to be Lee Byung Hun's ex-girlfriend. She also claims that Lee Byung Hun tricked her into bed by promising marriage, and has suffered emotionally as a result.

On the 8th, Kwon Mi Yeon filed a $100,000 claim with the Seoul Central District Court against Lee Byung Hun for damages and emotional suffering.

Prior to meeting Lee Byung Hun, Kwon Mi Yeon was attending York University and majoring in Rhythmic Gymnastics as a National athlete for Canada. She claims to have met him in September 2008, while Lee Byung Hun came to Toronto, Canada to promote his movie "The Good, The Bad, The Weird."

Kwon Mi Yeon stated:
I was introduced to Lee Byung Hun through an acquaintance. He gave me tickets to his movie and we become closer naturally. Shortly after, Lee Byung Hun left for New York, but called me regularly. About 1 week later, towards the end of September, Lee Byung Hun came back to Toronto and we began our full-fledged relationship.

She also stated that after Lee Byung Hun left for Korea, they still kept in touch via phone and email:
At the end of last year, I visited Korea and spent around 10 days with him at his home. Lee Byung Hun also introduced me as his girlfriend to his mother, younger sister and of course his friends.

Kwon also revealed:
The sponsor of Lee Byung Hun, Chairman A told me, "I will let you continue your career in athletics as well as academics by supporting you through college, so leave Canada for Korea to live with Lee Byung Hun." So I left Canada to go to Seoul last July (2009) and lived with him in an apartment in the district of Jamshil. But not even 3 months in, I was thrown out. After I arrived in Korea, Lee Byung Hun's attitude changed. After he kicked me out, he put ~$10,000 as a deposit for a ~$700 rental apartment for me. Afterwards, he has ignored me as if he doesn't even know me.

Kwon Mi Yeon finished off by stating:
I think that this big celebrity used his fame and fortune to take advantage of me and only use me for entertainment, then threw me away. This is why I submitted this complaint.

Lee Byung Hun's legal representative stated:
Kwon Mi Yeon and the people around her have been threatening Lee Byung Hun (victim). We plan to investigate this issue.

Stay tuned for more on this juicy scandal!

Raymond Lam says it's too Out, draws a line with Linda Chung

Yesterday was Raymond Lam's 30th birthday and still have no love life, he's eager to encounter his other half soon. When speaking of rumored girlfriend Linda Chung, Raymond used "too out" to describe the topic. In order to get away from the topic, he says that they do not keep in touch at all by phone.

Yesterday Raymond and Ella Koon attended a Christmas event at Pacific Place, Ella was dressed in a Pucca low-cut dress, exposing her sexiness. It was Raymond's birthday yesterday, the organizers especially arranged for a birthday cake to celebrate with him. Raymond reveals that he already had dinner with his colleagues to celebrate, last night he went home and spent his birthday with his lovable dog. He also received many birthday wishes through SMS from good friends, asked if Linda sent him a SMS too? Raymond said: "So Out, the series promotion has ended long ago, we have never kept in touch by phone." Then he quickly wanted to draw a line with Linda, he said: "Don't talk about it anymore, I don't want to affect her."

Men hitting 30, Raymond does not have plans to start a family yet, he said: "I briefly thought about it before, but now it's been postponed. My family does not rush me either." His career is developing very smoothly, but he's still eager to find his other half, he said: "Have to encounter her first, although I had met someone compatible, but there is no time to manage it, so in the end it's still no fate." Raymond laughed and said that his birthday wish is to earn more money because this year he had to pay millions worth of taxes, he smiled: "This year my income grew faster than the inflation rate. (Next year you'll have to pay 10 million taxes!) Yeah!"

Ella Koon who was also at the event did not give birthday boy a kiss, she smiled: "I'm afraid to ruin his make-up." Ella expressed that she doesn't randomly kiss people, she said: "It has to be someone I love. Usually during promotions, I don't mind pretending to kiss, filming I will get into it, so I'm afraid too, but now that I have more experience, I know how to manage it." Has there been a time where acting turned real? She was shocked and said: "No!" In filming, she has kissed Kenneth Ma and Chilam Cheung before, but she stressed that there won't be sparks, she said: "I am very professional, I don't think about that stuff."

Eminem, Beatles, Shakira top decade-end sales list

Who wins the record-sale wars of the ’00s? The battle comes down to the Real Slim Shady, the Fab Four, and a perhaps less fab boy-band fivesome.

According to Nielsen SoundScan (via USA Today), Eminem garners the top overall prize for album sales over the last ten years with 32.2 million copies sold, despite having a five-year gap in studio albums between 2004’s Encore and this year’s Relapse.

The Beatles, however, come in a close second with 30 million, and earn the single-album ticket to ride; their greatest-hits compilation 1, released in 2000, sold 11.5 million, edging out ‘N Sync’s No Strings Attached from that same year by a mere 400,000. (The latter sold 2.4 million in its first seven days, still a SoundScan record.) Norah Jones’ 2002 debut Come Away With Me wins the bronze, taking third place with 10.5 million.

As for digital music? Shakira “Hips Don’t Lie” is the decade’s most-streamed track by nearly double numbers, with 85.3 million online plays, followed by Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You,” at 43.5 million, and Chris Brown’s “Run It!”

Cross-format rock and country rule the Aughties’ radio-play records, however; Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me” was the most spun, followed by Train’s “Drops of Jupiter,” Lifehouse’s “Hanging by a Moment,” two Faith Hill songs (“Breathe,” “The Way You Love Me”), 3 Doors Down’s “Kryptonite,” and Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance.”

Readers, who were your artists of the decade? And who did you forget even belonged to this decade? Don’t Lie.

Rihanna Doesn’t Date “Nice Guys”

Listen up, fellas: Rihanna doesn’t do Nice Guys…..

The tattooed fashionista insists she will never date a straight-laced man because she can’t be bothered with a romance that is “perfect and boring.”

“Perfect and boring” beats getting your ass kicked everytime, honey.

The “Rated R” hitmaker famously split from boyfriend Chris Brown earlier this year after a vicious Grammy night fight left the beauty battered and bloodied and the once-revered crooner scrambling to salvaged his career. Despite the ordeal, Ri-Ri — who was once romantically-linked to actor Shia LaBeouf — hasn’t lost her zest for “high risk” guys with an “edge” and will never consider going out a man she considers a “cream puff.”

“Definitely the high-risk (guys). I don’t like cream puff, corny guys. Usually they are the nice guys, the ones that won’t hurt you. They’ll pull out the chair for you and the whole nine yards. Everything is perfect and boring,” she tells Britain’s Glamour Magazine. “I like the risk, I like the edge. That’s the thrill for me.”

Super Junior’s “Sorry Sorry - Answer” & “It’s You” remix tracks released!

Super Junior caught the attention of many when SM Entertainment revealed last week that the group would be releasing a repackaged Sorry Sorry R&B remix and concert album. SME has released The 2nd Asia Tour Concert CD and the tracks are smokin'! Although we were all expecting a slow rehashed version of Sorry Sorry, this remix retains the infectious rhythm of the original yet creates a totally different vibe.

I'm not even a huge fan of Super Junior, but it's pretty catchy! Check out Sorry Sorry - Answer here:

Furthermore, a new studio version of It's You has been released, digging this mix as well:

More : Super Junior’s “Sorry Sorry - Answer” MV to be released this week

Back in March, Super Junior made their anticipated comeback with Sorry Sorry, and proceeded to sweep into the kpop scene and claim the hearts of many fans both new and old. Even after the promotions ended, people couldn't get enough of this track, and yesterday it was revealed that the popular idol group would be returning with a Sorry Sorry - Answer remix and Super Junior THE 2ND ASIA TOUR CONCERT ALBUM Super Show 2 album on the 9th and 10th, respectively.

But that's not all - today it was confirmed that on December 10, Super Junior's official website would unveil the music video for Sorry Sorry - Answer to the public. The filming, which took place in Namyangju, Gyeonggi, was led by studio director Chun Hyuk Jin, who has directed many other music videos for SM Entertainment.

Similar to the original Sorry Sorry music video, Sorry Sorry - Answer will have a monochrome concept with primarily black, white and brown hues, and promises a simple yet sensational display for fans to enjoy. Who's looking forward to this?

I like Win 7, but I've already drawn up a Win 8 wishlist

As I’ve said before, I like Windows 7. In fact, I like the OS a lot. It reminds me a lot of the good ol’ NT4 days. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I’ve fallen in love with Windows again because times are different and I enjoy a polyamorous existence where I use several different OSes. But Windows 7 has reminded me of the fact that when Windows is done right, it can be a cracking OS.

But all this emotion directed at a big pile of 0s and 1s doesn’t mean that I don’t see room for improvement. In fact, I’ve already drawn up a Windows 8 wishlist, which I’ll share with you here.

Custom installer

Look, it’s the 21st century. Installing the OS on one drive and setting it up so that the data is stored on another drive should be a trivial matter that’s handled during setup. The current installer is simply prehistoric and I hope to see dramatic improvements in Windows 8.

Better support for compressed file formats

There are are a number of very good, free, open source tools for handling compressed files out there. My favorite is 7-Zip and it’s capable of handling all sorts of exotic archives. However, I’m still sort of surprised that apart from supporting .ZIP archives, Windows still can’t handle any other commonly used compressed file format.

Combined antivirus/antispyware/firewall

This seems like a no-brainer to me. Microsoft should bring all the security software under one application in the next incarnation of Windows.

Updated Task Manager

The Windows Task Manager is a very useful tool. However, it’s very long in the tooth and overdue for a revamp (apart from some minor additions, it’s the same Task Manager that was present in NT4). It doesn’t need to be as complex and fully-featured as Sysinternal’s Process Explorer, but more features could be useful.

Software install center

Microsoft has a lot of cool, free software on offer but unless you know where to look for it, you’ll never find it. Linux distros such as Ubuntu have a Software Center where users can download new stuff from. Microsoft needs something similar, along the lines of how it delivered Ultimate Extras to users.

End to 16-bit/32-bit support

There a time and a place for dumping legacy support and moving on. Windows 8 should be that time.

Reboot-free updates

If you can already update certain Linux distros without requiring a reboot, we should be able to do the exact same thing in the next version of Windows.

.ISO support

Yes, Windows 7 allows me to natively burn .ISO files to disc, but why do I have to scrabble around like a raccoon in a dumpster looking for a tool in order to be able to create and mount these files? Again, the next version of Windows should be able to handle .ISO files natively.

Offline Gmail access now a full-fledged feature

After more than five years as a publicly available test version, Gmail shed its beta label in July. Now one feature key to the Net giant's cloud-computing aspirations, offline access to Gmail, also has grown up less than a year after its debut.

"Offline Gmail is graduating from Labs and becoming a regular part of Gmail," Google programmer Aaron Whyte announced the change Monday in a blog post.

Offline Gmail support, which relies on a Google browser plug-in called Gears, lets people read, search, organize, and compose e-mail even when there's no Net connection; sent messages are queued up in an outbox for delivery when the network access is restored and the account on the computer can resynchronize with the server.

"Offline Gmail has proven particularly useful for business and schools making the switch to Google Apps from traditional desktop mail clients--they're used to being able to access their mail whether or not they're online, and Offline Gmail brings this functionality right to the browser," Whyte said.

Google Apps, a bundle that includes Gmail, Google Calendar, and the Google Docs suite of online applications, is available for free for educational users or smaller organizations. Premiere accounts cost $50 per person per year, and Chief Executive Eric Schmidt called such enterprise-oriented services Google's "next big billion-dollar opportunity."

Gears is built into Google's Chrome browser, but other browsers rely on a plug-in. However, Google has stopped developing Gears in favor HTML5's equivalent features. That overhaul of the standard for displaying Web page includes local data storage on a computer as one feature, and it's now enabled by default in Chrome even though HTML5 isn't a final standard yet.

Updated 1:45 p.m. PST and 5:46 p.m. PST: For some Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard users, Gears doesn't work, hampering use of Offline Gmail.

Google initially said Tuesday that Gears doesn't work on Snow Leopard but later amended its statement, narrowing the problem to Apple's Safari browser.

"It turns out that Gears does work on Firefox for Snow Leopard and Leopard, though it still doesn't work on Safari," Google spokesperson Victoria Katsarou said. "There was a bug that was preventing Gears from downloading on Snow Leopard, but we're fixing it and at we'll be updating our Help Center article and Download page to reflect the change."
She declined to comment on when or even if an HTML5-based version of offline Gmail might arrive.

Offline Gmail didn't even work Tuesday in the new Chrome for Mac beta version. Gears is built into Chrome, but trying to enable offline Gmail with the browser yields a "browser not supported" error message.

For the rest of you, here are Google's instructions for getting set up with offline Gmail:

1. Click the "Settings" link in the top-right corner of Gmail.
2. Click the "Offline" tab.
3. Select "Enable Offline Mail for this computer."
4. Click "Save Changes" and follow the directions from there.

Gillian Chung still refused to talk about Edison Chan

Gillian Chung (Ah Gill) was in Shanghai yesterday. She was attending a fashion brand's Spring and Summer collection in which she is the spokesperson. Ah Gill was presented with the "TOUCH 15" Award in November. She said it was a great encouragement for her morale. This gives out a message to the society for being strong in life. Talking about Edison Chan who is in Shanghai opening a new shop, and it was thought that Ah Gill went to Shanghai after him. Ah Gill said "I am well prepared for the media to ask me this, but I will not answer your question."

Ah Gill told reporter she is more mature now as she is 29 years old, she will not pretend to be lovely. Since Ah Gill is constantly in the public eye, she has the influence for the young people. She hopes her own experience will encourage young people to be strong and be determined, never give themselves up. She pointed out "This is about being strong, but needing a lot of encouragement."

Wonder Girls’ US album slated for February 2010 release

It's official - the Wonder Girls are making their big break into the States in February!

As we revealed earlier, JYP Entertainment has teamed up with widely acclaimed musician and producer Dave Stewart to help with the production of the girls' debut album, and has already revealed a demo teaser of Always Without Me (a collaboration with Cindy Gomez), only one of three songs he produced for the pop quintet.

Dave Stewart, who has produced for mega stars from the American Gwen Stefani to the Russian t.A.T.u., has established himself worldwide with an impressive career that has spanned over three decades. On his Twitter account, Stewart revealed his support of the girls, expressing, "I think it's a No.1 song for them [and] they will make it great" and "The song is epic for them I think it will break them into a whole new world." The musician-producer-photographer (?!) also uploaded photos of his spontaneous photoshoot with the girls:

"one snapshot I took of the Wonder Girls just arrived from their Concert in China"

"Hard Days Night with the Wonder Girls !"

The Wonder Girls revealed that they were honored to be able to work with such a big-name producer; the fivesome has already started working vigorously, and aims to make this album their best one yet.

With someone like David Stewart plus the girls' determination and talent, I'm sure this album is one to greatly anticipate as we enter the new year. Good luck to the Wonder Girls.

Ok, Now It’s Done. MySpace Music Completes Acquisition Of iMeem

MySpace Music has completed its acquisition of most of the assets of music service iMeem.

We first broke the news that MySpace was close to acquiring iMeem last month. Two days later, we reported that an agreement was signed to purchase the assets of the company for $1 million in cash.

The deal didn’t close, however, because some of the assets MySpace Music was going to buy (namely, servers) were actually being leased. So that had to be worked out. And the final price ended up being less than $1 million, meaning MySpace Music is getting the iMeem brand and users for next to nothing. An additional earnout is also part of the deal, but it’s not much.

Unlike the iLike acquisition, iMeem is being acquired by MySpace Music, not MySpace. MySpace Music is a joint venture between MySpace and the music labels.

But now it is official. MySpace Music will be acquiring some of iMeem’s remaining assets and transition its 16 million monthly users over to MySpace Music. All of their playslist swill be migrated over, for instance. Founder Dalton Caldwell, CTO Brian Berg, COO Ali Aydar, and VP of Sales David Wade will oversee the transition on a consulting basis. It is not clear what will happen to IMeem’s other employees. Imeem now redirects to this landing page.

Samsung teases Bada at event, questions still outnumber answers

We've just come back from the Samsung Bada mobile platform launch event in London, and frankly the presentation was no more than an app developer and investor magnet -- no hands-on opportunity and no direct answers regarding the hardware. The only mention of a Bada phone is that something's coming out in the first half of 2010. That said, today Samsung did bring in representatives of five strong Bada app partners: Twitter, Capcom, EA, Gameloft and Blockbuster. Needless to say mobile gaming is high up on Bada's agenda, but the brief presence of Twitter's Head of Mobile, Kevin Thau, solidified Samsung's dedication for integrating SNS (social networking services) sites on mobile handsets. Yes, just like many fish in the sea. Read on to see how Bada aims to be "an ocean of endless enjoyment."

Open platform
Despite the presentation leaving us scratching heads as to what Bada really is, we had the chance to sit down with the platform's Principal Engineer, Dr. Justin Hong, who nicely broke it down for us. Bada's objective is to be "an easy-to-integrate platform" to tickle the interest of developers, but at the same time being able to cover a wide range of device specifications (although Hong admitted there's no plan to implement Bada on old hardware). For now Bada will work on top of Samsung's proprietary SHP (Samsung Handset Platform, which was also led by Hong) OS as found on the Samsung Jet, and will feature the forthcoming TouchWiz 3.0 UI as the icing on the cake. When asked about Symbian Hong simply said there's no decision to support it for Bada, but they'll continue to support multiple OSes -- as promised before -- as the market "always need different OSes" to maintain high customer satisfaction. Frankly, it's just money talk on that last part, as Hong then went on about how they also need to customize their phones to fit the carriers' requirements. What's for sure is that Samsung's committed to provide greater support to Bada developers.

Bada is optimized for developing SNS apps. For example, carriers can easily code in location-based SNS features using just a few lines from a large set of API supporting popular sites like Twitter and Facebook. Another main feature is that Bada will exclusively support multitouch -- or 'multipoint touch', as they like to call it -- phones, and interestingly Hong told us that it will work on both resistive and capacitive touchscreens. Combining both of these features we expect some pretty sweet games. The hardware requirements for Bada are yet to be finalized, but Hong reassured us that Bada's not bound by chipsets, and that the cheapest Bada handset will definitely be cheaper than Android's counterpart. This goes along with Samsung's "Smartphone for Everyone" strategy which, on top of Bada's in-app (and over-the-air) purchasing, equates to greater revenue for the developers if all goes well. Oh, and Bada supports Flash-based apps too -- check out the fancy Chelsea Football Club app simulation toward the end of the video below.

Bada applications
As mentioned earlier, Samsung has several big name studios producing games for the Bada platform. While there were no live demoes, we're already digging Capcom's "Resident Evil: Degeneration", but the rep's constant mentioning of "Street Fighters" is also looking hopeful. Another interesting app is "My Friends" made by Onycom, which essentially aggregates all your social networking contacts -- very much like Palm's Synergy and Motorola's MOTOBLUR. We're not sure if these two will be preloaded on all Bada phones, but what's for sure is that they will have a map app -- "Where to go" by deCarta. We were most impressed by Blockbuster's vision: CIO Neil Davis spoke of offering a seamless media experience where you can stop half way through a Blu-ray disc at home, and then "walk to your car and finish it up on a Bada handset." We queried Samsung about this possibility and sadly its VP of Global Marketing, Younghee Lee, wasn't so optimistic. Spoilsport.

Wrap-up
While what Bada's trying to achieve is not totally new, we're impressed by Samsung's success in convincing a handful of high-profile companies to develop apps for this new platform. We're most looking forward to the support of Flash apps as well as what the game developers will offer. If Samsung sticks to its promise about the affordability of Bada phones, then 2010 is going to be an interesting year for the smartphone market.

Chris Brown Says Graffiti Has Gotten A 'Great Response' From Fans

He also brushed off Rolling Stone's mediocre review: 'I didn't get the way they looked at my album.'

Chris Brown had his day in court when he pleaded guilty for his assault on Rihanna earlier this year. But with the Tuesday (December 8) release of Graffiti — his first project since the February assault — finds the singer facing a different kind of judgment.

So far, though, Brown said the feedback he's gotten from the public has been praiseworthy for his album, the third of his career.

"My fans [have] given me a great response on the album," Brown told MTV News. "They actually said they love it. They tell me what songs they love. Like 99 percent of the comments are all positive about the album."

Reviews for Brown's album have mostly been generous, although many reviewers have put the music in the context of the assault. Rolling Stone magazine did a double review of Brown's album alongside Rihanna's latest. The review noted that, unfair as it may be, it's difficult to listen to Brown's music without recalling his violent actions.

"The Rihanna incident has made it impossible to hear him in the same way," the review read. "The sweetness that animated songs like 2008's 'Forever' is now a hard sell."

Brown took umbrage with the review, in which he received 2.5 out of five stars, taking to his Twitter account to respond to the magazine. "rolling stone mag... r u serious?" he wrote. "we will see. album 12-8-09."

"I didn't get the way they looked at my album," he explained to MTV News. "I just felt like there was a little bit of hate because of the situation and not because of the music. But we're gonna keep it moving."

Jerry Yan’s Nightmare at the Wax Museum

Taiwanese idol star Jerry Yan (言承旭) is so popular that even his body-double is in demand. Last month Jerry Yan’s wax figure went on display at the Madame Tussauds museum in Pattaya, Thailand. Unfortunately, organizers didn't seem to have gotten permission from Yan for this mighty creation, as it doesn't look much like the star himself. The wax figure should get a failing grade for its likeliness, because at first glance, it looks surprisingly similar to Japanese star Kusanagi Tsuyoshi.

Jerry Yan became famous all over Southeast Asia after starring in the idol drama “Meteor Garden” eight years ago. At last month's grand opening of the Madame Tussauds museum in Pattaya, his wax figure stood along side other superstars including Teresa Teng (鄧麗君), Chow Yun-Fat (周潤發), Brad Pitt, David Beckham, and US president Barack Obama. However, the Jerry Yan figure looked only 30% like the original.

Jerry Yan’s wax figure is outfitted in tie and suit. At first glance, it looks somewhat like the star himself, but at a closer look, its facial features are completely incorrect. The forehead is too high; the shape of his face appears too bony; the most important feature, which is his eyes, completely lost his signature misty gaze. The only feature that has some resemblance is his signature wave, but overall, it looks awfully like Japanese star Kusanagi Tsuyoshi. In comparison, Jerry Yan’s wax figure in the Shanghai Madame Tussauds museum, in which he participated in its production, looks a lot more like the star himself.

Apparently, Jerry Yan is not aware that he has a new body-double in Thailand, adding to the fact that it doesn't look very much like himself. Reporter contacted his manager Fenny yesterday and she answered frankly, “we didn't hear any news before or seen it yet”, suggesting that they haven't given permission to the museum. When asked if they will go oversea to defend their right of portrait, she said, “We will have a discussion first before taking any action.” The museum charges 400 baht (about NT$ 389) for locals and 600 baht for foreigners per visitor.

Since Jerry Yan is very busy as this year comes to an end, it is unlikely that he will have time to look after issues with his body-double in Thailand. In addition to his new compilation album, he will also promote the upcoming idol drama “Down with Love” in January. He is known to be very wary of people commenting that he is too thin. With this new wax figure not looking very humanly, Jerry Yan will probably be quite upset if he sees it himself.

Acer Liquid A1 Android smartphone now on sale

Acer’s first Android smartphone – and indeed the first Android handset to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor – has begun shipping in the UK. The Acer Liquid A1 is currently in stock at retailers Expansys and Clove, priced at £339.99 ($556) and £328.99 ($538) respectively.

Your money gets you a 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and triband (900/1900/2100) HSDPA, along with WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and a 5-megapixel camera. While the processor is capable of 1GHz speeds, Acer have taken the decision to underclock it to 768MHz, likely in response to the capabilities of the 1,350mAh battery.

At 12.5mm thick the Acer Liquid A1 isn’t exactly the most svelte Android handset around, and we’re not convinced by the black & white color scheme, but early previews have been reasonably impressed by its performance. Unlike HTC and Motorola, Acer haven’t done a huge amount of customization to the UI, so you’ll be living with a pretty standard install of Android 1.6 Donut.

Google Chrome hits beta for Mac and Linux, extensions available for extra-smug Windows and Linux users

At long last Mac and Linux users don't have to feel like second class citizens in Chrome land: they've got official beta versions of Google's browser to call their own. Of course, people have been running the open source Chromium version on both sides of the fence for ages, but beta brings with it a new level of stability and officialness. Google is also finally launching extensions for Chrome, which is available for the Windows and Linux versions of the browser, and with Mac compatibility on the way. There are already 300 extensions available, not a bad start, and hopefully a good indication of the sorts of added functionality we'll be able to stuff into Chrome OS with the help of a seemingly-excited developer community.

Dell Vostro V13 hands-on impressions: 'yes'

What if you took an original Adamo, shaved a couple pounds off the weight and a grand off the price? You'd end up with something pretty close to the new Dell Vostro V13. We just got a quick look at the machine, and while some of the cheaper materials Dell is using here certainly came through, the total package is still quite impressive -- and the price unimpeachable. The anodized aluminum exterior is smooth to the touch and gives the frame of the entire laptop a great amount of stiffness; none of that bendy nonsense that can be found in some of the $500ish thin-and-light competition. We were also pleasantly surprised to find a antigloss (not quite matte) display under the hood. Unfortunately, the compromises begin with the keyboard, which is a bit bendy and "clacky" (the bad version of "clicky"), and the 6 volt battery gets 4.75 hours as quoted, so probably around three in real life. We're also a little disappointed that the $450 base price rips out the SD card and ExpressCard slots, and that you can't get a Windows 7 version for under $600 -- even though the Ubuntu default is mighty tempting. So, there are compromises, just like in life, but for the most part this is one of the least timid computers we've seen from Dell in a while: not afraid to step on the toes of its brandmates and make a name for itself. Check out a quick video hands-on after the break, and stand by for our review that should hopefully arrive later this month.

Update: We got some bad info, and it turns out that the ExpressCard and SD card slots do come standard with the laptop -- the mockup we saw didn't have them, but all shipping models will. Phew!

Taylor Swift Goes High-Fashion, Fully Glam, Slightly Gaga In 'T Magazine'

In case you needed confirmation that Taylor Swift is taking over every facet of the universe -- Pop music with eight Grammy nominations, country music, with her sweep of four CMA Awards and her place in history as the youngest-ever Entertainer of the Year, and she even has a line of greeting cards coming out next year -- Taylor Swift's now dominating high fashion, having just landed the cover of T magazine, The New York Times Style Magazine.

In the New York Times style spread, Taylor, who's used to sparkle, gets extra sparkly and majorly mod, trading in her simple sundresses and cowboy boots for some sky-high Rick Owens platform bondage boots, and a crystal-covered Prada vest, Burberry Prorsum jacket, and sunglasses that resembles shattered glass and suggests Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" video. The result is a futuro Alice In Wonderland with a slightly hard edge.
