Stars night as Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga spice up the Vevo launch

Rihanna was in superhero mode as she headed up a crowd of divas at the launch of a new music video website last night.

She wore an open cropped jacket with huge shoulder pads - with apparently nothing underneath - and high-waisted trousers.

But it was the huge gold belt and matching bangle with spiky gold shoes that had the fashion-forward singer looking like a cross between Wonder Woman and Catwoman.

The Russian Roulette singer was at the launch of website Vevo in New York last night with Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga.

Country singer Taylor Swift looked her usual elegant self by playing it safe in a simple black dress with embellished shoulder detail, black court heels and low-key accessories.

Mariah Carey, who gave a speech at the event, was also there with husband Nick Cannon, and dressed in figure-hugging black.

Lady Gaga was her usual quirky self, dressed in a full-length grey gown with her blonde hair styled in a bow and very dark eye make-up.

She performed at the launch after flying back to New York from the UK after her wacky show at the Royal Variety Performance in Blackpool on Monday night.

Singers Justin Timberlake, John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, Pete Wentz, Ciara, 50 Cent, Mary J Blige and Bono from U2 were also at the star-studded event.

Vevo, launched by Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, will feature high definition videos, lyrics and merchandise.

As well as stars from those two music giants, artists from EMI Music will also be available.

Vevo also contains programing from CBS radio stations and Last.fm and, so far, around 30,000 videos are available.

The aim is to create an MTV for the digital age after viewers started switching off TV music channels and turning to the internet.

Music videos are already hugely popular on YouTube, attracting millions of hits a day.

However, they generate little advertising revenue because the video is often grainy and surrounded by content created by amateurs, making them unattractive to advertisers.

But the content will be powered by searches in YouTube and can be watched on the site through a VEVO-branded channel, as well as at VEVO.com, and through a VEVO-branded embedded player

The site, which will be free to watch, will be available in Britain next year.
