'American Idol' on Lennon-McCartney Night: How did the Top 9 fare?

Paul McCartney wasn't on hand to personally mentor the American Idol top nine, but he did have a message for the bright-eyed hopefuls as they tackled the Lennon-McCartney songbook: Don't screw this up.

Well, Sir Paul was actually far more eloquent than that, telling the contestants to "get out there, go for it, enjoy yourselves."

But you get our drift. McCartney and John Lennon's prolific work contains recipes for both delight and disaster, as evidenced by Idol's inaugural Beatles night a couple years ago. Amateurs singing these sometimes deceptively profound classics can either make you want to put your hands together…or cover your ears.

So which way did the pendulum swing tonight?

Sandra Bullock: 'There Is No Sex Tape'

Sandra Bullock has broken her silence during her marriage crisis, denying an Internet report there's a sex tape with her and husband Jesse James.

"There is no sex tape," she says in a statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday. "There never has been one and there never will be one."

Until now, Bullock, 45, had not commented, remaining in seclusion since reports surfaced that James, 40, allegedly had cheated on her with at least four other women.

Bullock has been in touch with a close circle of friends, including comedian George Lopez, who visited her for a second time on Monday.

She spoke out in response to an online report that James possesses a graphic sex tape which he could possibly use as leverage in a divorce case.

Adam Lambert Confirmed as 'American Idol' mentor next week!

Adam Lambert will serve as guest mentor on the April 13 episode of American Idol, a spokesperson for 19 Entertainment confirms exclusively to EW. Internet buzz began swirling this afternoon that Sony Music reps had contacted selected radio stations with the announcement that last year’s runner-up would advise season 9’s Top 8 contestants, and then perform his current single “Whattaya Want From Me” on the April 14 results-show telecast. There’s no official word yet on what theme the contestants will tackle during Lambert’s visit.

Lambert as mentor should provide a glittery adrenaline shot to an Idol season that’s struggled to find its water-cooler mojo. Adam, perhaps more than any former contestant, should be able to help Idol’s low-key crop of current contenders add some much-needed drama to their performances. Plus, what better way to promote Adam’s single (currently lodged at No. 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100) and planned summer tour?

iPad vs. JooJoo... fight!

Sure, they might be worlds apart in quality, usefulness, and desirability, but even still, comparisons are inevitable. The iPad (right) and the JooJoo (left) hit the hands of consumers on the same weekend, offer large-screen browsing experiences controlled entirely by a capacitive touchscreen, and... well, you get the idea. So, how do the two devices stack up externally? It's a pretty fair fight, hardware-wise. The JooJoo is thicker and heavier, but also scores a good amount more screen space -- its 16:9 ratio almost turns it into an extruded lengthwise version of the 4:3 iPad. Unfortunately, that screen is a real let down when viewed off axis, and isn't nearly as responsive or accurate as the iPad's in use. Both of the devices offer scratch resistant glass fronts and brushed aluminum backs, though there's a bit of give to JooJoo's materials that smacks of slightly lower quality. You can read the reviews to get an idea of how dramatically different these two devices are in actual use, but if you want to satisfy a baser lust for straight-on comparison shots be, pics below.

Verizon CEO hopes the carrier will sell a 4G iPhone

It’s not the first and certainly not the last time we’re hearing about an iPhone for Verizon, but this time it’s something we don’t get to see everyday: Verizon’s CEO himself (Ivan Seidenberg) declared that the largest US carrier would be open to offer the iPhone to its customers.

Moreover, according to Reuters, Mr. Seidenberg went even further by saying he hopes they’ll sell an Apple iPhone with support for the 4G / LTE network that Verizon is currently building.

This comes not long after we’ve heard that Apple’s upcoming iPhone could be called iPhone HD, and a version of it might hit Verizon in September.

The death of Net neutrality: Five quick thoughts

Today, a federal appeals court rejected the FCC’s claim that Comcast couldn’t “sculpt” Internet traffic and block the flow of BitTorrent data.

This effectively put a stake in the heart of Net neutrality. It sets a precedent for all such cases, and, in effect, allows Internet carriers of all types to adjust their traffic in any way they wish.

This is bad news for all of us online. Here are five quick thoughts:

#1 Killing Net neutrality means big players always win

There could come a time when your access to favorite sites is slowed or stopped, just because those favorite sites couldn’t pay some kind of exorbitant access fee.

This ruling opens the door to tiers of pricing for data transit, making the Internet superhighway into a toll road.

Anyone who’s driven on Route 287 vs. the New Jersey Parkway knows the toll road is often a lot slower.

'School bullies called me fat and laughed at my appearance,' says Lady Gaga as she poses in sexy photoshoot

Lady Gaga has never seemed the insecure type.

Her eccentric outfits, outrageous makeup and blase attitude made her seem untouchable.

But there's a different reason for her most recent sexy magazine photo shoot - to prove the bullies who teased her at school wrong.

The 24-year-old singer admits she struggled to fit in at an all-girls private school in New York, and was frequently made fun of over her appearance.

Lee Hyori swings to the top of online music charts

K-pop princess Lee Hyori has swept online music charts with her latest single "Swing," according to her agency Mnet Media on Tuesday.

The single, from the singer's fourth album "H-Logic," released on Mnet's website and portal site Naver on April 1, conquered several real-time online and digital sound source charts the same day.

"Swing" currently occupies the No. 1 slot of online music charts including Mnet, Bugs, Soribada, Dosirak, Monkey 3, Daum and online social networking site Cyworld as well as the chart for music retailers Hanteo.

Van Ness Wu goes shopping with his new girlfriend in HK

Van Ness Wu got a little break after his new film The Killer Never Kills was delayed. The star of Autumn's Concerto was spotted shopping in Hong Kong with his new girlfriend yesterday. He wasn’t able to hide his happiness as he fixed her hair when they were riding the escalator. He waited patiently while she was shopping, and didn’t even get mad when reporters followed them. Van Ness Wu didn’t answer when he was asked if she is his girlfriend or a close friend. Instead, he avoided the question and asked someone nearby, “Did you want to take a picture with me?”

His manager Katie remained tight-lipped about the identity of the woman. Van Ness Wu’s new girlfriend is said to be 160 cm and over 25 years old. She won’t reveal her name and said, “You can identify her as Miss A. She doesn't work in showbiz, so she was frightened when they followed and photographed her. (I) can’t say too much.” Miss A is apparently also an ABC and a friend of Van Ness Wu, but they only started dating about one month ago.

An ‘Idol’ Ratings Loss, but Not in Its Pocketbook

THE hit show “American Idol” has been the playground bully of prime time for so long that it’s not surprising that long-suffering competitors relish every opportunity to tweak its sky-high nose.

So ABC can hardly be blamed for bragging that last week’s edition of its own reality show hit, “Dancing With the Stars,” attracted more viewers (23 million) than “Idol” (21.8 million). In much the same way, NBC was elated when it topped “Idol” on one night of its Winter Olympics coverage in February.

And certainly the latest cast of “Dancing” has attracted quite a bit of media attention, with names like Buzz Aldrin, the former astronaut, and Kate Gosselin, the reality star, among the competitors.

But any effort to push “Dancing” as a real threat to the might of “Idol” where it really counts — ad dollars — is at best premature. It may be fairer to label it folly. According to figures on commercial costs issued by the Nielsen company, “Idol” is charging about $642,000 for each 30-second commercial in its current run. The most recent figures for “Dancing” come from last fall’s edition, when it was charging about $209,000.

Jennifer Aniston ‘Feels Old and Ugly’

Jennifer Aniston is feeling old and ugly.

The actress, 41, has told pals she fears she’s losing her looks — and, in a bid to life her spirits and ensure future movie roles, has decided on a radical makeover.

“Jen’s been visiting her New York-based dermatologist Dr Amy Wechsler a lot over the past few months,” a source told Britain’s Now magazine. “She’s been leaning on her a lot recently, not just when she’s in New York but also for phone consultations.

“They’re both into the whole mind-body connection, so they do chanting and visualization. And Jen loves that Dr Wechsler believes in being very subtle with her work. It’s painstaking but the finished product speaks for itself.”

The source says Jen’s love of wine is causing problems.

Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy Split

They're grateful for the time they spent together and only wish the best for each other. But for Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy, it's over.

"Jim and Jenny have recently decided to end their five-year relationship," Carrey's rep Marleah Leslie tells PEOPLE.

The two had supported each other through many life events, including the birth of Carrey's first grandchild after the actor's daughter, Jane, gave birth to a son in February.

"I'm so grateful for the years Jim and I shared together," McCarthy, 37, said in a statement. "I will continue to be in his daughter's life and will always keep Jim as a leading man in my heart."

In announcing the split on his Twitter page, Carrey, 48, echoed her warm sentiments. "I'm grateful 4 the many blessings we've shared and I wish her the very best! S'okay!" Carrey Tweeted.

Apple to Unveil Mobile Advertising This Thursday?

Here's an interesting little rumor that seems all too plausible: Peter Kafka at All Things Digital says sources are telling him Apple will announce a new mobile ad network based on its Quattro Wireless acquisition on Thursday at its iPhone OS 4 event, a report that jibes completely with what we learned about the iAd / AdKit framework present in the iPhone OS just last week. Kafka also says that Google will undoubtedly cheer the move on, since it's trying to convince the FTC to approve its $750m AdMob acquisition -- the presence of a formidable competitor like Apple in the mobile ad space makes the buyout seem more like healthy business and less like "evil monopoly that owns every ad on the internet and is stalking innocents for their flesh with Google Buzz." Our guess is that Apple will give developers a standard way to place ads in their apps using a new OS service and split the revenue 70/30, just like paid apps in the App Store, but that's just a shot in the dark -- we'll see what happens on Thursday.

Apple iPad WiFi Issues: Are You Affected?

With 300,000 iPads sold in one day, it would have been a miracle to find that every single one of them out there worked without a hitch. But, that’s not how technology works, and sure enough, we’re hearing a gentle (but growing) rumble about how some folks’ iPad’s are giving them some trouble. Especially in the WiFi department. Now, Apple has commented on the problem, and we’ll get to that in a moment, but the main point of this post is to ask the big question: have you been effected by the WiFi problems?

Basically, people from all over the country are saying that either their iPad is dropping and picking up WiFi signals erratically, or it won’t automatically sync up with previously paired WiFi routers/modems. That’s the main gist of it, anyway. Now, considering the initial orders of iPads don’t have another means of connectivity, we understand that not having your WiFi connection can be ridiculously upsetting (especially when, for all intents and purposes, it should be working). So, here’s what Apple thinks you should do to fix the problem:

Court sides with Comcast, challenges FCC's Net Neutrality efforts

Comcast scored a victory today when a federal appeals court shot down the Federal Communications Commission’s ability to regulate Internet service providers.

Essentially, it’s a blow to so-called Net Neutrality efforts, the push that would keep Internet Service providers like Comcast from differentiating - and treating differently - heavy users of the Internet. The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia (PDF) said that FCC does not have the authority to require Comcast to treat all Internet traffic the same on its network. From the ruling:

Performance list for upcoming 16th Dream Concert on 22nd May revealed!

Indeed, thanks to the Hallyu Fan Card, Japanese fans can already apply for the presale until April 14th, whereas the reservations will be open starting from mid-April in South Korea.

The information is still to be confirmed by PlayCube which has to reveal about the girls’ following activities but especially their tight schedule for May. Their Japanese debut is set for May 1st (with the further release of the Muzik single Japanese ver. on May 5) and their Korean comeback was announced by newspapers for mid-May.

Idol product endorsement - Zaizai's income the most impressive (grand)

"Celebrity value" has become a major conduit/conductor for consumer marketing. In addition to the artiste's "star level" and topic of conversation, the film's box office or drama ratings are also the most direct indicators for manufacturers in selecting of "casting". In the past 3 months, Zhao You Ting and Ethan Ruan through relying on the"Monga" trend, has met with media every two or three days, and Vanness Wu and Tiffiany Hsu has also become familiar faces through the train of "Next stop, happiness" (Autumn Concerto), whereas Janine Zhang is the Queen of public services activities.

However, the racing around constantly (or appearing in many public events) does not necessarily mean earning more. With a strong foothold in the mainland market, ZaiZai and Joe Chen Qiao En, although rarely attend events as guest of honor, but through one big endorsement/ advertising for Greater China region has raked in a 8 digits reward in advertising revenue, possessing the most grand/ impressive income.

HTC Q1 profits up 19% year-over-year

Today, HTC reported its 2010 Q1 earnings, and the vitals from the mobile handset giant all seem to be positive. Q1 revenues jumped 19% from Q1 of last year to $1.2 billion, with a net profit of $158 million and an earnings per share at $0.20. The positive numbers prompted investment firm Morgan Stanley to raise HTC’s stock price target and firm Goldman Sachs to renew its “buy” rating on the stock. Revenue was down 8% from Q4 of last year, however that isn’t out of the ordinary as Q4 includes the holiday buying season. Anyone out there have plans to pick up a new HTC phone soon? Incredible? EVO? Bueller?

PS3 firmware 3.21 locking out more than just other operating systems?

Sony already irked a few people by removing the "install other OS" with its PS3 firmware 3.21 update, and it looks like it may have also inadvertently drawn the ire of quite a few other users. Judging from reports on the official PlayStation forums, a sizable number of PS3 users have run into an array of different problems after installing the update, which range from folks not being able to log into PSN or load a disc after the update, to users not being able to turn on their PS3 at all -- some have even reported freezing during the update process. Of course, there's also lots of users that have updated without any issues whatsoever, and the problems don't seem to have yet drawn an official response from Sony.

LG LU2300 Android smartphone details start coming up

More details on the forthcoming LG LU2300 Android smartphone have surfaced today, and it looksk like it’s going to be in the league of at least a couple of Android superphones that we’re already familiar with. And there are pictures of the smartphone itself, to boot.

But while this looks like something that a lot of people interested in Android should be looking forward to, it is currently believed that it won’t be available anywhere outside of Korea. That shouldn’t stop anyone who really wants to get it from going to Asia and just buying it there, but still.

Rihanna Abhors Music Video Product Placement

Listen up, music stars: Rihanna has something to say about singers who agree to lucrative cash bonuses for littering their music videos with product placement. Just last week, handlers for former Destiny’s Child star Kelly Rowland sent out a mass email seeking commercial sponsors to pay to have their products strategically placed in the star’s forthcoming comeback vid. Rihanna, on the other hand, loathes artists who sell out to be “commercial.”

Jesse James Nazi-Themed Sex Tapes

Just when it seemed there couldn’t possibly be another detail about Jesse James’ cheating scandal that could shame his devastated wife any further, one more tawdry deet about Jesse’s second double life hit the Interwebs this Tuesday. James allegedly made more than a dozen sex tapes with his hos — and he’s dressed up as a Nazi in each one. According to reports, the West Coast Coppers CEO made the films with several different mistresses unbeknownest to Oscar darling Sandra Bullock, who wed the biker in 2005.

“Most of the tapes feature a mass amount of Nazi paraphernalia,” a source whispered to RadarOnline.com on Tuesday. “It’s all really quite disturbing. What I saw was a naked woman on her knees and Jesse in a Nazi hat waving his arm in a salute. It looked like the woman’s hands were bound,” the insider adds. “He was shouting and singing and appearing to swig from a bottle of bourbon every now and then.”

On Monday morning Britney went to her lawyer's office in Westwood, then she drove back to her house in Calabasas, and around 3pm she went to Jason's Beverly Hills office. Whew!

EMG says iPad and most other Apple gadgets infringe on its patent

The patent system in America is pretty bad. People are granted patents on some of the most obvious designs and works often with the intention of nothing more than trying to get other firms to pay to license tech that was obvious to start with. At the same time patents help protect those who spend lots of time and money bringing new tech to market from being ripped off.

Apple is no stranger to both sides of the patent battle. The firm has fought those who infringe on its patents and has had to defend against companies that accuse it of infringement. EMG and Apple have been down the patent battle road before, back in 2008 the firms fought over features of the Safari browser on the iPhone.

EMG Technology has escalated with Apple now that the iPad has been released. EMG alleges that the iPad infringes on its patents along with the iPod, iPhone, iTunes Store, and Apple TV devices. EMG has filed a patent infringement suit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The judge there is known to rule in favor of the patent holder.

ICD Gemini takes on iPad: 1GHz Tegra 2, 3G, multitouch & Android

Last we heard of ICD, the company were showing us their Tegra 2-based Vega and Ultra tablets at CES 2010; now they’re back with details of a new model, the ICD Gemini, again using the second-generation 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra chipset and now paired with an 11.2-inch touchscreen (using either a resistive or capacitive panel, both of which support multitouch). Is Nokia working on Booklet Touch – Windows 7 based tablet?

Well, here we go again. Another round of new Nokia device and even form factor rumors.

This time it comes from Ashok Kumar, analyst at Rodman Renshaw, via TheStreet.com.

According to their sources, Nokia is working with suppliers and design manufacturers on a touchscreen tablet, to have it available as early as this fall.

So how much truth is there in this rumor?

Well, while while The Street’s Scott Moritz/Ashok Kumar does not have a perfect record, and can be completely wrong in some details, they’ve made quite a few good calls over the last year I’ve been watching them. These include things like Nokia N900 last April, Google’s Nexus One last October, or Verizon’s cooling towards Palm Pre last September.

So yep, I believe that there is a solid amount of truth in the latest rumor about the upcoming Nokia tablet. The question is, what kind of device are we talking about, that can be ready for release this fall?

iPad, tablets expected to dampen Netbook sales

The appeal of the iPad, HP's upcoming Slate, and other tablets will take a bite out of Netbook sales this year, according to a report released Monday by DisplaySearch.

Driven by the iPad, the tablet market will see dramatic gains this year, taking market share away from clamshell-style Netbooks, says DisplaySearch's "Quarterly Notebook PC Shipment and Forecast Report."

Most of the growth, especially for the iPad, will come from North America and Western Europe, where Apple has set up key distribution lines and created agreements with content providers. Overall, consumers are expected to pick up around 5 million tablets this year, forecasts DisplaySearch.

You know, in case the millions of USB storage options out there aren't doing it for you.

Next KAT-TUN single to lack Akanishi

Last month, it was announced that KAT-TUN member Jin Akanishi (25) is set to spend several months in the United States to further his solo career, meaning that he will be unable to participate in KAT-TUN's upcoming Asia tour. Now, it is being reported that he is also absent from the group's next single, "Going!," being released on May 12.

The song was recorded in late March, around the time of Akanishi's U.S. concert announcement. Because Akanishi will be missing from the group's tour and from any promotional events for the single, it was decided that the other five members would record the song without him.

Despite Johnny's Jimusho's statements to the contrary, there is much speculation that Akanishi is leaving KAT-TUN, fueled even more by this news. Akanishi is expected to stay in the U.S. until October, when his visa will expire, but he currently has no work scheduled after that. Sources say that there is a possibility of him making a long-term move to the U.S., but nothing has been finalized yet. In any case, it appears that Akanishi may eventually become an absentee member of KAT-TUN, even if he is not officially removed.
